Why are you nervous about this? You've done something similar three times before. And it's not like you're dealing with another runner. You've spent months preparing for this. "Iunno. I guess I always expect something to go wrong," Steely looked down at Zelda as they stood in the shadow of the observatory. It was a cool and clear night, with the stars winking up above them. Groudon's emblem had been sitting heavy in her pocket for a few months now, and having burned through a couple of HM quests and completed the planned team she had for the adventure... she really couldn't justify waiting anymore. She could try really hard to do so, but it just rang hollow. She was already crazy and had three legendaries... why not one more? Steely shook all the thoughts out of her head. They were as ready as they were going to be, short of more boring training. She made sure the emblem was still in the pocket of her coat. "Alright. Let's go see what we have to do. I sure hope he isn't in the observatory. That would be messy," she started walking towards the building to head inside and look around, Zelda at her right. Hopefully going inside would be as easy as... opening the door and walking in. Once there, it was over to the telescope. I very highly doubt it. It kind of sounds like you have to put the emblem in the telescope somehow and look at the sky. "Which... opens a secret door or something to go underground?" I don't know. Groudon certainly isn't in space, so we'll see. Giving Tremor's Light Clay to Zelda. Let's do this. |

2 ![]() It wasn't surprising that the weather was cool and clear, really. The location of the Malral Observatory had been carefully selected to maximise visibiility, and by extension, the effectiveness of the telescope. Thanks to the altitude, and the lack of nearby light sources, the night sky was practically saturated with stars, planets, and even the faint outline of a galactic arm. Fascinating thing, space. Security wasn't a real issue. The only valuable things in the observatory were the telescope itself and the massive supercomputers used to crunch the vast quantities of data that the telescope recorded. Both objects were far too large to be stolen, and wanton destruction wasn't something one usually saw around these parts. This meant that Steely reached the door to the observatory undisturbed. All she had to do was push on the (unlocked) door and step inside... "Oh, hello there." Well, no-one said anything about this being an unmanned observatory. The surprised voice belonged to a bespectacled man in his early thirties. No stereotypical lab coat as you might expect from the scientist type, though - his ensemble was more of a shirt and smart-ish pants combination, with a nice thick sweater to keep out the chill. He got up from his workstation - a built-in terminal on the wall - and jogged over to meet the new arrival and her pokémon. "Can I help you, miss?" |

3 ![]() Steely... didn't exactly jump when she heard the voice, but she did start a little bit. Zelda was pleasantly unsurprised by this development, like she always was. The trainer only had a few seconds to decide exactly how truthful she wanted to be here. After all, who knew who you could trust? But upon thinking about it a little, she decided deception wasn't worth it. Besides, she had Rapier and Delta with her. She really didn't think that anything bad could happen to them with the team that she had on her. "I, um," she dug around in a pocket, finding the emblem and pulling it out to show him, "I'm looking for Groudon. The poem says after you have the emblem, to 'cast your gaze into the stars', so... well, here I am. This is the only place in the region that would make sense for something like that, but I'm not sure what to do here..." Zelda looked around while Steely rambled, more for lack of anything to do then anything else. This wasn't that complicated, or at least it wasn't so far. They had the little emblem, now they just had to figure out what to do with it. The dude had been slightly unexpected, but hopefully he would be helpful. 2 ![]() The astronomer's eyes widened. "Groudon?" He repeated warily. Evidently, he wasn't convinced that actively seeking out a pokémon said to shape entire continents was such a brilliant idea. "Yes, I know the poem. You're actually the first person who's come here to ask about it." Which wasn't surprising, really. Most people weren't brave/crazy enough to pursue Groudon in the first place. When Steely showed him the emblem, he leaned forward to peer at it intently. "Huh. That's odd." He ran his fingers over the grooves of the emblem, checking it for something. "Hold on a minute, I have to check something." And with that, he scurried off downstairs. A few minutes passed, during which time nothing much happened. Soon enough, though, the scientist returned up the stairs clutching something in his hand. He held it up to Steely, and explained. "Here at the observatory, the telescope collects quite a lot of data. Nowadays it's all stored in servers we have downstairs and offsite, but before we transferred everything over to them, we used these." He gestured to the object in his hand. Upon closer inspection, it looked almost exactly like the Groudon emblem, except black instead of red. "The only problem is, it's obselete technology. This storage disk is older than I am, so even if that emblem of yours turns out to be one of these, I don't know where you'd need to take it to read the data on it. I mean, the telescope's pretty old too, but..." He tailed off with an apologetic shrug. Well, it can't all be completely straightforward, now can it? |

3 ![]() And Steely was in fact both brave and crazy, so it works out. The 'first person' bit stuck in her head a little bit, if only because it made her think that maybe nobody else had found the emblem before? Or nobody had cared. Either way, if nobody had ever come looking for it... She blinked when he left, and the pair of human and pokemon exchanged a look that they both shrugged at. Steely looked around a little but didn't touch anything while they were waiting, and soon he came back with a similar-but-different thing. So what she had was... some kinda data disc? Or... something? "Huh," she reached out to feel the grooves too, thinking about the groves on her own emblem. She blinked down at the red-thing in her hand, and then back up at him. "To be fair," she laughed a little, "I hadn't expected anyone to be here, much less someone so helpful. I mean, I figured I had to stick it somewhere... do you mind if we look around?" I promise we won't break anything. And if they were allowed, Steely headed towards the telescope to look it over. Even if the disk didn't go into it directly, it was still pretty cool to look at. At some point, Steely looked over her shoulder at the guy again, "By the way, what's your name? I'm Steely, and this is Zelda." The pink psychic cat was hopping around the workstations daintily, barely disturbing the air as she looked around for somewhere to slot the thing into. |

3 ![]() "I suppose it'll be okay, as long as I go with you." The astronomer said. "Some of the equipment's a bit delicate." He led Steely up a set of stairs to the room where the telescope was situated. It was much like the ground floor, with workstations and computer equipment covering the walls of the room, but with the key differences of the roof being open to the stars, and there being a massive telescope in the centre. An elevated observation seat was built into the end of the telescope for ease and comfort of viewing. "Oh, names, of course. I'm Alan." He gestured for Steely to sit in the observation seat to check things out. There was nothing obvious on the telescope itself, and Zelda wasn't having much luck on the workstations either. "I don't think you'll find anything on the workstations." Alan offered. "The hardware gets upgraded every few years, so all these computers were installed after we switched from the old data discs." He pointed towards the telescope itself. "The viewing area is the oldest thing here. If your disc goes anywhere, it'll probably be accessible from where you're sitting." But then, there was nothing obvious on the telescope itself. Perhaps more searching was required. |

3 ![]() "Nice to meetcha, Alan." Steely laughed a little as she hauled herself up into the chair and sat down, resting her hands in her lap and looking around. She leaned forward to look into the eyepiece for the telescope, mostly just to see what she could see. If nothing else, she might not get to do something like this again, and who didn't want to look at the night sky through a gigantic telescope? At this point, Zelda had also stopped at a workstation and was looking at it when Alan spoke to her. She flicked an ear and turned her head, I figured, when I saw how new they were. It's all still very interesting, though. Steely pulled away from the eyepiece after she'd had her fill of looking at the night sky, and started looking around where she was sitting. First, she looked at the telescope itself, seeing if there was any kind of panel that could be opened and reveal... something. After checking that, she looked around the seat. That wasn't an obvious place, right? And if there was anything else within reach that she could poke at, she'd look at that too. Finally... She stuck her hand in her pocket and got out the emblem again, moving it around where she was sitting to see if it reacted to anything. Silly, maybe, but it couldn't hurt anything. |

3 ![]() Alan blinked in mild surprise, not used to telepathic communication with pokémon. "It is." He said to Zelda after he recovered. "These are some of the most powerful computers in the region. They have to be, with all the data we collect and analyse." Meanwhile, Steely was searching the viewing area, after getting a rather spectacular magnified view of the night sky through the telescope's eyepiece. It was when she checked the seat itself that she came across something unusual. The right armrest of the chair had a faint grooved outline, with a barely noticeable indentation the size of a finger. When examined, a panel dislodged from the armrest, revealing a slot that, by an amazing coincidence, was exactly the right size to accommodate one of those obselete data discs. Very handy. It didn't take any massive logical leap to figure out what to do next. Steely was already going to jam the emblem wherever it looked like it would go, so let's go ahead and assume that's what she did. It fit snugly in the arm slot with a satisfying click. That's when the rumbling and whirring started. The chair started to rotate, along with the telescope. In fact, the entire roof of the observatory started to shift around, as the co-ordinates stored on the emblem were fed into the telescope's computers. When the movement and noises stopped, the telescope was pointed at an unusually flat angle, not into the sky as it normally was. If someone were to look through it, they would see a mountain range in the distance, overlooking a smattering of shacks in a desert foreground. Alan had rushed over to one of the workstations, his attention focused on a series of numbers on the display screen. "Bearing 315, centred on the Dry Mountains. For such an old technology, it's amazing that it can still be read." He turned around to talk to Steely. "I suppose that's where you're going next? Better you than me, I can tell you." Astronomers tended not to get too involved with magma gods. |

3 ![]() Steely gripped the chair as the whole thing moved, and Zelda hopped over when it stopped moving. Obviously, Steely looked in the eyepiece and saw a whole lot of mountains. "Huh." Zelda flicked an ear at Alan when he gave them the exact landmark coordinates, and Steely leaned back to see if she could remember if they'd ever been there before. The pink psychic cat hopped up into her lap to peer through the eyepiece too. "Think you could line of sight teleport there?" No, that would be too cheesy. "Yeah, I figured as much. Luckily, I've been really close to that before, in the mountains." Also, did you notice that it's right next to where we fought Entei? Steely frowned, and leaned in to look again. "Well, shit." They simultaneously looked at Alan when he spoke again, then they glanced at each other. "Hah, yeah. I'm uh, pretty prepared, though. I've done this legendary hunting thing enough times before," she wrapped her arms around Zelda and slid down to the ground gently after picking the Emblem out of the armrest again, if she could. "But, yeah, that's where we're headed now. Thank you for your help," Steely beamed at him, still carrying the espeon. "Maybe I'll bring the egg by after we get it!" And before Alan could really process that, they blinked away. Teleporting to Rocky Slopes in the Imperial Mountains. |
