“...And this is the new headquarters,” the Talon operative concluded as he ushered Jennifer through the elevator doors into the foyer. “Anything you need help with?”

“No thankyou.” Jennifer replied coldly, walking briskly forwards and leaving the man behind. This entire business had been one hideously embarrassing mess. Captured by the OME during the urban guerilla warfare some months back, then forced to stew in one of their cells until Talon operatives got her out.

“I could have got myself out eventually,” she muttered to Vesper, her Espeon, who slinked alongside her mistress.

Assistance with escaping the authorities is one of the privileges of being an Operative, Vesper reminded her. Jennifer shrugged, still glowering.

“I don't like owing anyone anything,” Jennifer replied.

Since when have you ever felt obliged to repay a debt?
Coppelia asked. The little Solosis had been an interesting addition to the team. Jennifer suspected that something in it's head had split the wrong way, because the psychic had a strong streak of bloodthirstiness. She served an interesting counterpoint to Vesper's more reserved, calculating manner.

“Normally, never.” Jennifer came to a stop and leaned against the wall, folding her arms. “But our illustrious leader is not someone you want to screw with.”

So what do we do now? Vesper asked, curling around Jennifer's feet.

“Well, if the fight with OME taught me anything, it's that I need to build up a full team of pokemon. I was going to hold off on it until I'd established myself in the city properly, but if I'm going to have to start from scratch anyway, I might as well change my priorities – see if a little travel abroad doesn't turn up something profitable. Assuming the Seer will let me leave town right after being rescued, of course.”

Eh, screw her, Coppelia interjected, making Jennifer flinch and look round hurriedly.

“Keep your voice down, will you?” she muttered. “She's not someone you want to disrespect.”

Come on, how scary can she be? Coppelia asked, floating out into the main foyer. She's only a human after all, what can she do against a psychic?

She has no idea, does she? Vesper asked as Jennifer pinched the bridge of her nose.

“No she does not,” Jennifer replied with a sigh.

What can she do indeed, little worm, came the resonating psychic voice that dominated the minds of all gathered. The clicking of havy boots against polished onyx flooring was clear, as was the swishing of the black cloak as she walked. She was not impressed with such impudent disrespect in her own halls. She'd had enough of that from the military when they invaded her territory.

The Seer's cloak concealed all. Her hands were folded inside her sleeves, adjoining in front of her - and only the smooth yet powerful contralto mental voice resonating out from under the hood gave any sign of humanity.

Your Solosis aside... welcome back, Jennifer. I do have something of a task for you, if you're interested. Not so much a test of loyalty, but more... something I need done. Urgently. Are you prepared for such an undertaking, or shall I have someone else do it?

An opportunity? Perhaps.

Jennifer managed to force a polite smile, the effect ruined somewhat by the colour draining out of her face. Vesper's ears twitched back for a moment, but Coppelia's reaction overshadowed the other two. Having never met a psychic human before (let alone one of the Seer's calibre), she had been completely unprepared, and was now slowly tumbling in mid-air, eyes wide in vacant shock.

“No, no need for that,” Jennifer said in reply to the Seer's question, reaching out to cup Coppelia in her hands and draw her away. “What do you need done?”

Arceus, that human's got a nasty streak to her... Coppelia said vaguely

"Shutupshutupshutup," Jennifer said through clenched teeth, putting her hands behind her back and holding the Solosis there while she forced another smile.

The Seer sighed, long and loud. And then she spoke with her real voice, which sounded like it carried the venom of a thousand vipers within it, all directed at the poor little Solosis who did not know any better.

"Little one, I understand that you are new here. I also understand you are young. So allow me to spell this out for you: whatever perceptions of a 'nasty streak' of me you may have, they are correct. But also remember that my perceptions of you determine your survival. I can drain your ectoplasm and have you scattered to the four winds with little more than a thought - I am just as powerful as your fully-evolved forms. Do not doubt me."

She did not appear to move at all when she spoke - perhaps an illusion cast? The truth would never be known. Instead, the Seer contemplated heavily what had to be done, and how to do it. There was much work to be done, in the end.

"I require a few... loose ends tied up, as it were. Nothing too difficult. Three ex-Talon smugglers who went with the fall to the OME are now attempting to muscle in on one of our protectorates. And, as you know, Talon looks after its own. Bring them back into the fold... or have them suffer the consequences. You may take all you need from our armoury, and their current base of operations is five blocks south of here. Questions?"

Jennifer let out a breath of relief as the Seer turned her ire on the Solosis. She'd be having a very very long talk with Coppelia when this was over...

“Questions?”

“Yes,” Jennifer said, straightening out her blouse. “Do we know what level of protection they have? Pokemon-only, conventional firearms? And would they know my affiliation if they saw me?” Jennifer gave a respectful nod of the head. “Also, do let me extend my apologies for Coppelia's... blunt attitude. It won't happen again, will it, Coppelia?” Jennifer looked over her shoulder pointedly. The Solosis made an indeterminate squeak. Jennifer gave a thin smile. “Thought not.”

"Expect personal protection and Pokémon. Do not expect to be recognised," the Seer told her.

And then she was gone, vanishing into the shadows. Jennifer would be left to take whatever she needed, temporarily, from the Talon armoury - and then she would be on her own.

-----

The streets of KBville were dark, at night. The warehouse in question had allways on all sides, seemingly a good place for an ambush or something along those lines, if one wasn't too careful. However, the main courtyard from which the warehouse was loaded led onto a main road, where a truck was coming in to unload the smugglers' next shipment of rare Pokémon. Something the Seer obviously wanted. Three men were standing guard, seemingly unarmed. They were smoking and chatting to each other like they didn't expect anything to happen.

Strange, but that was how it was. Jennifer had plenty of options - and plenty of liberty to do what she wanted.

Jennifer let out a long sigh of relief as the Seer withdrew. “That...,” she said very slowly as she recovered her composure “...is not something I want to happen again.” Jennifer turned her gaze on Coppelia and narrowed her eyes. “Don't you ever pull a stunt like that again, do I make myself clear?” Coppelia gave a nervous gulp and nodded “Now let's get moving, we need to get supplies from the armory.”

*******

“Alright then...” Jennifer perused the shelves of the armory, inspecting the equipment like she was browsing a supermarket. “Let's go with a silenced pistol with extra clip... EMP Scrambler... half a dozen smoke bombs...”

Not going to get a knife? Vesper inquired.

“Too messy,” Jennifer replied. “In any case, I make a point never to use a weapon that gives the victim a chance to overpower me.... few cryo bombs... aaand a microwave jammer for good measure.” Jennifer stopped to organise her selection and distribute it around her person more efficiently.

“You're staying away for the first bit,” Jennifer informed Coppelia, recalling her with a flick of her pokeball. “Can't have you getting carried away.”

What about me? Vesper asked.

“You, I need out,” Jennifer replied. “I may need your help getting in, and pokeballs make too much noise for my liking.”

*******

“Looks easy enough,” Jennifer said to Vesper as she peered round the corner. The guards were complacent, clearly not expecting trouble. “Main issue is making sure they don't raise the alarm before I take them out. That's where you come in Vesper – if you can keep their attention away from me, I can sneak close enough to take them out before they react.”

Surely the other two will raise the alarm after you shoot the first one?

“Not if they're stuck in a cryo bomb blast they won't. If these things can freeze a fully evolved pokemon, they can certainly freeze a human.”

One would hope, anyway.

“Alright Vesper, distract them.” Jennifer unclipped a cryo bomb from her belt, carefully holding it in her hand while she drew the silenced pistol. Meanwhile, Vesper snuck up towards the guards, skirting round underneath the truck. Once there, she waited a few moments, then sprinted out into view, looking around like a lost pet – or escaped contraband, more likely as not. Jennifer came out from around the corner, tiptoeing as close as she dared to the distracted guards, before lobbing the cryo bomb at the trio, trying to catch as many as possible in the blast, before finishing off the rest with the silenced pistol.

---------------------

Equipment list:

- Silenced pistol with two 19-bullet clips
- EM Pulse Scrambler (1 charge)
- 6 smoke dispensers
- 3 cryo bombs
- microwave jammer
