Alex's whirlwind tour of the lower-tier gyms in Opaddeka had taken him to the remote 'town' of Aridair. Little more than a collection of tents and makeshift buildings, the outpost's main attraction was the sprawling, rusted potential lawsuit known as the Aridair Gym. Like always, Alex had done his research on the gym - the new gym leader, Phyllis, specialised in two types of pokémon, steel and poison. Hence the twisted exterior. Which obviously meant that he had crafted a team of firebreathers and psychics and ground pounders to give him the best chance of winning. Which, in turn, meant that one psychic in particular finally got a chance to shine. Glad to see you're finally bringing out the big guns. Guru said to the trainer, fiddling with the life orb around his neck. "Glad to see you're feeling so confident." Alex replied. "You're my lead for this one." He gestured towards the stadium entrance. "Ready to go?" Aren't I always? --- As it turned out, Phyllis was just about the last person one would expect to be running this kind of gym. She was a sweet old lady who had insisted on offering Alex and Guru some of her homemade cookies as soon as they walked in. It had taken a good few minutes for the trainer to explain that he was here for a gym battle, which seemed to get Phyllis ever so excited. "Ooh, that'll be nice," she'd said with a glint in her eye. "We haven't had a challenger here in such a long time. Why didn't you say you wanted a battle in the first place?" Except he had, but that wasn't important now. The old lady led them to an open expanse of sand in the middle of the gym's main arena. She then gave Alex the prepared gym rules spiel. "I'm sure you know the rules, dearie. We both get to use four pokémon, no potions. You get three switches, I don't. Last one standing wins. Shall we begin?" Alex nodded, and turned to Guru. "You're up." Finally. The Alakazam hovered forward into the battlefield proper, and readied himself for whatever the gym leader decided to send out. Poison types were no problem for the psychic, and even steel pokémon wouldn't be so confident after a Focus Blast or two. So unless Phyllis had a surprise up her knitted sleeve... *fwoosh* ...oh dear. That was the sound of a sandstorm blowing across the field. Which meant that Guru could only be facing one of two pokémon. Trouble was, neither of those pokémon were steel types, or poison types for that matter. Alex could make out a pair of glowing red eyes, and a silhouette of a familiar pokémon through the swirling sands. "Hippowdon?" He asked, somewhat surprised. "I thought this was a steel/poison gym." Phyllis looked puzzled, then chuckled to herself. "Oh no, dearie, that was Jasper. I much prefer ground pokémon to those awful poison types. Much cleaner." This wasn't ideal. Alex's team was stacked against poison, not ground. Three of his four pokémon were weak to Earthquake, and the other was out there right now. And Alakazam were not known for their defensive bulk. So what now, oh fearless general? Guru said on the private channel. Nobody had told him anything about ground types. He would be having words with the management after this. Um. Alex quickly thought up a backup plan. Got it. Reflect, then get ready to blast it. Roger. Guru quickly erected a mystical barrier, just in time for the Hippowdon to trigger a devastating localised earthquake. The Reflect did its job admirably, allowing Guru to withstand the assault and launch a counter-offensive. One souped-up blast of telekinetic energy later, and the hippo was halfway gone. Hippowdon was not impressed. In fact, it yawned right in his face. How rude. Guru said, stifling a yawn of his own, which prompted Alex to make haste with his instructions. "Quickly Guru. Again!" So Guru did it again. The second psychic blast was just as impressively powerful as the first, and was too much for Hippowdon to take. It collapsed to the ground, defeated. Unfortunately, Guru wasn't able to celebrate his victory - the hippo's yawning caught up with him, and he slumped to the ground too, the psychic's snoring clearly audible over the rushing sands. "Oh my." Phyllis said, recalling Hippowdon. "That Alakazam of yours is very impressive. But let's see how he handles my next pokémon." And with that, she selected her second pokémon and released it into the arena. A Camerupt. It wasn't getting any easier, especially with Guru asleep like this. Alex decided to cut his losses, and switch out Guru for someone more alert. He swapped Guru's pokéball for another on his belt, and tripped the release mechanism to reveal his second pokémon. Mothra the Volcarona emerged into the sandstorm looking distincly unimpressed. He spotted the fire camel across from him, and chittered. Alex called out his orders to the fire moth. "Mothra, you can setup later. Hit it with Psychic." "Eruption!" Phyllis said at the same time. Hence the need for quick action - Camerupt simply could not be allowed to spew lava all over the place at full health, it would just tear through his entire team like that. Thankfully, though, Mothra was a surprisingly quick giant insect, and he made good use of the psychic abilities that Alex had bestowed upon him. One blast of energy washed over the camel, whose retaliatory Eruption was nowhere near as powerful as it might have been. Still, Mothra did not much enjoy being pelted by chunks of semi-solidified lava. Who would? "One more." Alex said, ever one for intricate strategy. There was a time and a place for carefully-crafted sequences of attacks, and that was back when Guru was still awake. For now, though, brute force would rule the day. It was Mothra's speed that once again saved him, as he was able to unleash psychic hell on the Camerupt before it could retaliate. It was just enough to send the camel down for the count. Two-zero. Technically. "And a Volcarona that's equally impressive." Phyllis praised, recalling Camerupt. "You've been working hard, young man, I can see that." She selected her third pokémon. "I believe it's time for one of those steel pokémon that you wanted to see so much." To the gym leader's credit, the next pokémon out was indeed a steel-type. Problem was, it just so happened to be part water as well. Empoleon? Alex thought to himself. You've got to be kidding me. He considered the situation for a moment. He had a couple of pokémon in hand, so he could afford to be reckless in attack. Mothra wouldn't last too much longer, though, so it was vital that he make the best use of what little time he had left. "Fiery Dance, Mothra!" "Brine! Once again, the Volcarona was faster, and he began to spin in place, flames flaking from his wings and spraying out towards the Empoleon. Water and steel ended up cancelling each other out, as the penguin took a decent chunk of damage from the attack. Empoleon's response was to douse Mothra in salty water, taking full advantage of the bug's weakened state. Between the enduring sandstormMothra wouldn't be able to take much more punishment, but perhaps if he could get one more attack off... "Aqua Jet, dear." Maybe not. Empoleon launched a speedy water attack, and the impact was enough to take down Mothra. Two-one. Alex recalled his fallen fire bug, and replaced him with his third pokémon - Jaganath. The Steelix's colossal body took up a good portion of his half of the arena, completely dwarfing the opposing Empoleon. While the trainer wasn't entirely confident in the matchup, Jaganath did at least have a few tricks to employ. "Thunder Fang!" "Brine!" Yes, that was the problem. Jaganath was huge and sturdy, but also very slow. Even the armour plated penguin had the speed jump on him, and he made good use of that with another blast of water in the Steelix's face. It was a testament to Jaganath's resilience, or perhaps his luck, that he managed to endure the attack, if only just. Massive jaws crackled with static, and clamped down on the penguin to inflict further punishment. That turned out to be the metal serpent's last contribution to the battle - another blast of water to the face finished him off. Two-two. The Empoleon was proving to be a particularly tough opponent. Time, then, for Alex to unleash his secret weapon. Jaganath was recalled, pokéballs were switched out, and Ruby the Ninetales was called out to the battle. Then the sands subsided. For Giftmas, Alex had asked for Ruby to be able to improve the weather innately. The result was the fire fox waking up on Giftmas morning with the ability Drought. In this particular case, it meant that her mere prescence could chase away a sandstorm and replace it with a burning artificial sun hovering above the arena. A very handy trait to have when battling against a water type. "Flamethrower, Ruby!" "Aqua Jet!" Ruby first had to endure a speeding penguin crashing into her, but luckily the weather meant that she was not too badly hurt. In repsonse, the Ninetales spewed out a great gout of flame that smacked into the penguin with great prejudice. Thanks to the weather, and Empoleon's weakened state, that was enough to take down her opponent. Three-two. "It's not over just yet, young man." Phyllis warned as she recalled Empoleon. "You still have to defeat my last pokémon." She tossed the pokéball out with a flourish, revealing her last pokémon. Judging by the three that Alex had already had to face, this one was bound to be the most difficult one of them all... Oh, an Escavalier. Perhaps not. "Flamethrower." Alex said simply. There wasn't much more to be said, really - Ruby was faster than the armoured bug, and thanks to the weather, her typing, and the Escavalier's quad weakness to fire, the battle ended rather anticlimactically. Four-two. It wasn't the grandstand finish that would have made a good story ending, but Alex would take it all the same. Phyllis recalled the bug, and shuffled over to Alex to shake his hand. "Well done, my dear." She said, a wry smile on her face. "That was an excellent battle, and you are more than deserving of this badge." She handed Alex a curious badge - a black metallic hand throwing up the horns, much like a heavy metal rocker. She saw Alex's amused expression, and explained. "I know, it's a ghastly thing, but that's how the previous gym leader designed it." And so Alex left the gym, victorious. One more badge down. --- Back at the pokémon centre, Guru had finally woken up. So did we win? Alex showed him the badge. "Yep. Her Empoleon made it closer than I would've liked, but we won." Funny, I never had that sweet old lady pegged as a heavy metal enthusiast. ~~~~~ So yeah. Alex beats the Aridair Gym, and gets the Fabulous Prizes. Note: I noticed this when looking at the gym forum. Publicly, this gym is advertised as steel/poison, but the thread in the gym forums, along with the pokémon pool there, says that it's steel/ground. One of these should be fixed. Doesn't matter which one since we can always come up with a bunch of good poison types to replace the ground ones. The gym's TMs would also change. I worked on the gym being steel/ground, so Alex would be taking home an Earthquake TM. If it's steel/poison, then it'd be Iron Tail instead. Note 2: For kicks, I actually ran this through the calc, with Phyllis's pokémon being in the high 50s. Then I wrote it from there. |
