Travelling: MISTHENGE - Foggy Frozen Swamp - Frozen Valley - Sinklands 1 - Soggy Hillside - MAYRIVER - Healthy Field - Hillside 3 (Halcyon Forest)

  • The fog is, as always, unclearable, and immeasurably thick.
  • After a distance, it seems that there's more than just fog around. It starts to hurt, too.
  • Satari comes across an injured Munna, half-buried in the snow, clutching something which turns out to be a Psychic Gem.
  • Soon enough, a stomping and a growling comes along, and it turns out that the source of the 'painful fog' is an Abomasnow, who's summoned up a wild hailstorm around it, and it's stomping around, raging at anything and anyone.
  • Abomasnow will be difficult to placate; easier to simply beat it into oblivion. Can be captured if you wish, with three balls.
  • Hailstorm doesn't subside when it's gone (damn eternal hail)

The weight of the fog was dragging our souls down. In its attempt to seal us in this ill-advised purgatory, the fog continued to thicken and blind and wrap everything in the same delusion. These people, the people of Misthenge, had worn enough of the heavy cloak to ignore its cloudy descent, but a lady trying to make her way to Mayriver didn't appreciate weather's fortunes. Setting off with the wrong mood was recipe for a hard journey ahead, especially in an old battlefield of uncertain terrain.

The staggering obscurity and chilling weather ate into our psyche; any frost we experienced was amplified further by the gloomy atmosphere of the sheer lack of anything. Apart from the initial swampy conditions of the land, which had already made Murmur such a pain to traverse through, the unexpected plunge in temperature made the barren ground harder to walk in. I knew of the freezing of the northern valleys by the destruction of the Samurott machine, but it was my first time trekking through ice, and it was painful ice indeed. The repeated exhales of vapor didn't help heat up my hands, which were blistering in pain from the sheer coldness and dryness of the air around. Iris, now a Jynx, didn't seem to mind the weather at all: her icy tendencies are starting to rule in these familiar lands of crystals and eternal passivity. Nor would Mizuki mind, either: Lapras was acclimatized to icy waters, after all.

'Ouch!'

The first of raining shards had started to pelt from the skies, a solemn reminder that the weather would not change back to its original warmness. Much had changed in these lands, when the political winds brought about a huge upheaval of the balance of the regions, when a forgotten group of people whom most Opaddekeans heard of decided to take control of what they had been denied. Apart from the blood staining this part of Murmur, a more sinister frigid lock of time was kept in place to preserve a lamentable turn of events in Opaddeka history. Of course, all this hailing would mean a different thing to her Jynx. Everything wielded different meanings to different people, like how the outbreak of the JGSEI led to an influx of a new generation, which the new trainers would appreciate would bearing the brunt of its cost.

'Murmur may have solidified, but it doesn't change its obscuring fog. This... sucks.'

And dreams began to bubble in the wake of some thinning fog (which remained unbelievably thick, by the way), like multi-colored clouds shaping in the midst of a white backdrop of infuriating mist. A sudden image of the recent past, of a Munna regurgitating the same bubbles of sweet dream in an attempt to commit suicide, fogged Satari's inner thoughts. And she knew what had happened, what was about to happen...

'Iris!'

The Jynx had placed her finger to her lips, but it was with a clear reassurance that she did a psychic search of the area. Satari knew that it was unwise to disturb Iris' search by making unnecessary noise and such, but she was starting to worry, what with the same scenario that occurred just before she entered Misthenge. A Musharna's death, and two Munnas spewing dreams like they were going to die... could this be a connected case of mass-murder, or just a coincidence of cruel food chain reality at work?

And, in the flurry of foggy hail, the ice princess had detected the faintest of telekinetic traces. A distinct but minute thread of reason, begging for a departure from pain and frost, hidden among the violently spewed technicolors of memories. The previous Munna had been overtaken by grief; its psychological wound was too much for it to control its powers. This one was vomiting in pain. Its physical injuries were forcing it to regurgitate its stream of dreams, like a man would vomit blood if he were suffering from severe internal bleeding. It didn't help that the natural conditions were not conducive for recuperating wounds, and the hail itself didn't seem too natural to the surroundings, in any case...

Satari, look out...

'...someone's here.'

Iris had deployed the same old tactic to subdue the Munna's forceful expulsion, but the creature seemed as though it had rejected too much of its dreams to remain conscious of its pain. The Psychic did whatever little it could to diminish the feeling of pain that the Munna was sensitive to, but the little thing had already buried itself into the deep snow, too close to a frozen death. The Jynx picked the creature up, carefully, tenderly, almost too understanding towards the creature that shared certain special attributes and abilities to it. She did not bury into its dreams to comfort it, but closed her hands around the little thing while trying to mediate its body temperature. In contrast to the snow, the Munna was exceedingly hot. Its body was attempting to generate heat to counteract with the cold, but in the process it seemed that the creature had lost control of its temperature maintenance function.

From afar, the sounds of death drew nearer to the Munna, unrelenting like the pounding hail.

'It's coming!'

The Reaper didn't hesitate to announce its arrival. Taking the form of an Abomasnow, the gigantic beast roared at alarming speed and pummeled the snow with unrivaled aggression. The trainer who had been too absorbed in anticipating its arrival didn't react in time to the giant's crushing blow, but her Jynx had held the beast at bay. Taking the Wood Hammer in her stride, standing strong against that heavy blow, the Jynx returned a big Wake-Up Slap in turn. Both Pokemon only recoiled and stood their ground; I didn't even notice Iris placating the Munna to sleep, hadn't noticed the Jynx already lying in wait for the Abomasnow's assault. Iris had strength and endurance astounding for a newly-evolved Jynx, and I didn't even know she had that kind of potential.

'That's a mean thing... uh... Amber! Take Iris' place!'

'And you call me out in the snow to... ... Take cover. Now!

There was a swirl of red, and then I saw it: a shard of ice piercing through the mist, almost invisible in the midst of the hail, and it had been caught by the Ninetales who detected killer instinct within that huge berserker. She swished her tails nonchalantly, but the incision was clear and brimming with red blood. Amber paced a circle cautiously around the Abomasnow, as the aggressor eyed her suspiciously. Blood dripped rhythmically on the snow, staining white with a dull shade of dark red, demarcating the perimeters which the Ninetales was going to allow the Abomasnow to move. Iris ushered me further away from the fight, where Abomasnow wouldn't see me and target me, but I knew it was far too irresponsible for me to let Amber go on her own.

Your best bet, now, is to place your faith in that Ninetales and remain safe so that she can fight without distractions. She knows what she's doing, better than either of us.

Better than I'd like to admit.

The angry blossoming tree was spinning in the middle, trying to knock off a waltzing fox that blended gently into the general white of the surroundings. Amber didn't take notice of the Hail, didn't take notice of the Razor Leaf that grazed her right shoulder and caused another incision, only pacing around in a circle with a little more certainty and speed. The Abomasnow was getting impatient and it was beginning to throw larger objects, but it lacked the composure to properly hit something moving so fast and whose skin blended so perfectly into the snow. A certain heat was generated from Amber's tireless circles, and a vortex of flames was emerging from the snow, closing in on the Abomasnow and trapping it helplessly with its clumsiness. The Fire Spin was barely a nuisance to the Abomasnow, but Amber only needed to hold her enemy in place.

My turn.

The Heat Wave scorched the snow beneath the Abomasnow's feet, and all that transpired was masked by a further eruption of water vapour: Amber's fires were so intensive, it evaporated the snow almost instantly. The fiery assault couldn't be seen from where I was standing, but the realness of the heat told me that Amber was winning the fight. The Fire Spin locked Abomasnow in place enough for Amber to char it with Flamethrower after Flamethrower.

The temperature, it isn't right... Amber, get out of there!

A swirl of harsher frost swept across the lands harshly, and even with Iris shielding us against the frost we were shivering under the sheer strength of the wintry winds. The Munna stirred uncomfortably in my arms, but the blizzard - harsher than any ordinary blizzard - spoke volumes more about the tide of the battle. In the wake of the mist, Abomasnow was still standing upright, though it was shaking uncontrollably from the extensive fire damage, and its thick white hide was melting away. Where Amber stood before, an enormous pile of snow molded itself rigidly: few Pokemon could dig out of that mountain of snow if they were forcefully buried under. Iris took a step forward, taking the place of the missing Amber, but my senses were numbed by that unbelievable sight of the unyielding mountain.

So numbed, I didn't even notice the Abomasnow rushing against Iris, who tried to chalk up a hasty Psychic.

The Abomasnow raised its arms and drove it down, but a second's worth of lag took its toll on the Pokemon. Without rhythm or rhyme, the Abomasnow gave way under sustained damage and buckled to the ground: the last Wood Hammer never made contact. This further twist completely stunned me, but Iris wasn't paying attention to the fallen giant anymore. She was looking at the mountain of snow, wobbling uncertainly as if it were trying to break free from its prison. A sudden burst of flames shook everyone but the Jynx, who already knew what was going to happen.

I swear, I'm never going to like snow anymore. That Sheer Cold almost did me in.

That sigh of relief never escaped me, but as I bent down to assess Amber's damage, I couldn't help but release that bit of suppressed shameless flippancy in me. Death had come breathing down our necks, before skirting across the snow and back into the netherworld.

Though, that was not indicative of Amber's injuries. Or to the Munna, who required -almost- immediate medical attention.

TL;DR

0.5 :gexp2 . Trust - 4. With the new trust stuff, please also include the last three or four trust scores whenever you request a Fudd mod (or open up the possibility for one)

Amber gains 0.9 Exp for the battle.

Next...

  • Satari reaches the Frozen Valley.
  • The road leads to a cliff face, which descends straight into the main valley, with a fifty metre drop, or thereabouts.
  • There's the remains of an old rope bridge bridging the gap.
  • There's also a particularly vengeful Vanilluxe that shoots at anything that tries to fly across. Satari watches a Hoothoot ice block fall as she approaches the crevasse.

In pursuance of snow, we have lost sight of our destination.

In the middle of this snow-filled wasteland, where all memories of a bittersweet bloodshed brooded in the extreme frost of this unfeeling snow, snow blindness was threatening to swallow us up whole. Initial experimentation with snow promised to be fun, but we were betrayed by the impassive nature of this deceptively gentle substance. The swamp that had been frozen beneath our feet - a result of the automation's explosion during the JGSEI invasion, didn't change much of its confusing nature even in solid form. There was no squishy, muddy feel beneath our feet, but the whiteness - or lack of color - of it all weaved a perfectly devised maze right in front of our eyes: one which we could not overcome without faith and technical dependence on our Poketech. But Man's indecisiveness was always part of our folly, and the inventions of Man didn't prove perfect in deterring our inhibitions.

It was hard to admit that we were lost, even though we had been walking for hours in this place devoid of visible lifeform, because the Poketech was enforcing a false sense of hope in pointing out the right direction. The fog continued to swallow whatever little shadow that could exist on this frosty desert, leaving us even more confused than ever. The only good thing that came out of it all was that the Sun's rays didn't reflect directly off the snow and into our eyes - was that what they call blinding snow? - but how much comfort did it bring to us, who depended on our sight and who were deprived of our sight either way? What else could we say, we unworthy who depend on a chunk of metal to direct us on where to go, what to do, how to move on?

Are you cold, Satari?

I didn't bite my lip this time; my face was numb from the cold, and I was worried that biting it might trigger a frostbite and I might lose a part of my lip or something. Iris knew that I was cold, but she couldn't do much to control the weather anyway: not under prevalent conditions in an area as big as this. Some of that blizzard must have buried my emotion, anyway, because I couldn't evoke enough of a damn to respond to my concerned daughter. It was just an instinctive annoyance at the unendurable weather, but I knew that warranted some form of guilt and worry in Iris, and part of my savage nature wanted to convey how stressed and cold I was. None of us had any problem walking on, but Iris was much less bothered than I did, partly because she welcomed the snow far more than I did, partly because she wasn't exactly compelled to reach the forest as I did.

Maybe that was what you'd call childish spite.

It didn't take too long for my psyche to crumble; bit by bit, the pain and numbness from the cold itself was starting to eat into my skin. Touching anything became a pain, and I was losing control of my train of thought, over to random irrelevant stuff or just the cold itself. Even Iris' adamant enforcement in keeping my spirits up was just failing straight through. Even the Munna in my arms were deteriorating under the harsh weather; our only consolation, in the midst of its high fever, was that it wasn't spewing out dreams like it did before.

'Is that a shadow I see? Is that actually something else other than snow?'

Satari, relax! You're seeing-

The Jynx had stopped mid-sentence, and that was all it took for me to approach the standalone speck of black in the midst of white. Some semblance of a track could be detected amid the whole layer of snow, and my heart leaped at the prospect of actually finding something tangible for me to follow, even if it meant backtracking to Misthenge. Anything was better than being stuck in this god-forsaken weather-

I said, STOP! Look at where you're going!

The shout had broken the thread of my temporary maniac possession, and the snow that I shuffled on in my bid to stop was sprinkling down a sharp cliff.... and into an abyss 50 metres down.

'Wha... that was close.'

Any prospects of me lingering in my semi-delusion immediately dissipated into the fog, as I backtracked warily to where Iris was. From the insanely thick fog, I could barely make out thick ropes extending across the valley. A few shaky planks levitating precariously on those ropes sparked some form of recognition in my brain, but I was too exhausted from resisting the cold to acknowledge the discovery, and Iris summarized the findings more effectively than my brain did.

This bridge extends across to the other side... Well, we're on the right track but we can't really cross the bridge. The bridge's too worn out to handle our weight, I believe.

It was almost like awakening from a deep sleep, the way thing suddenly surface in its full clarity right in front of my eyes. Aided by Iris' psychic projection of what she could sense across the field, I could 'see' depth beyond my physical limits. We had no way to clear the fog, but Iris had grown quite adept to her telekinetic powers. Enough to surpass physical limits of vision via telekinetic detection and model a rough projection of her observations right into minds, which allowed us to see anything 5 metres ahead of us. No longer was I wandering aimlessly in the fog, even if we were still confined in our frigid prison. Iris had planned to reserve this ability in the case of an emergency, and this sudden hazard was what she deemed to be serious enough to employ her powers.

'Cirrus can't fly for far distances, but I think he's good enough for ferrying me across such a short distance. Iris, you can stay in the ball for a time being.'

But Iris didn't seem to be focusing on what I was saying. She was staring beyond the fog, as if she had spotted something of significance which preceded Satari's makeshift plan.

Satari, watch on first.

A blitz of brown soared across the skies, and just as its figure was about to reach the other side of the valley, a sudden shot of blue concentration flashed right into it. In the harsh weather, Satari could barely make out the beam slowly building blue mass around the creature: something that looks remotely like ice. The figure's futile struggles grew more evident in the midst of the blinding blue, until it finally stopped flapping its wings and became something more cubic. At the end of the Ice Beam, the figure - a Hoothoot, it seemed - slowly accepted the pull of gravity, oblivious to its pitiful demise. Its wings had finally failed to break free of the forceful spell, or handle the extra weight.

'There's something on the other side, trying to freeze anything that comes across...'

I can't see it too clearly, and it doesn't resemble anything I've seen before... Satari, we can't fly across here. Cirrus will meet the same fate.

But she needed to get across.

'We can't get across, but we can afford to go a little lower.'

By that, you mean...

'Iris, you're the only one that can see in this weather, be it telepathically or by any other means. Think you can land a Psychic in these conditions?'

A direct assault from this far!?

'No, I plan for it to be a distraction. I believe Cirrus can glide down with me on his back - he's a bigger bird than your normal Staraptor - while we find a suitable location to land, but I don't want this thing to fire its beams at us.'

If it changes targets from me, you two will die.

'That's why I need to test it out first. Though, I don't think the thing at the other end's too friendly. It may deteriorate to far-ranged attack slinging... that's why I'm depending on you, Iris.'

If you say so...

A purple ball had long manifested in the Jynx's hands, and it grew into a sizable ball of energy over the course of the conversation.

I'll do my best.

She compressed the ball of energy and hurled a beam right across the valley, hoping that the attack would find its mark in these conditions horrible for aiming at anything.
