Too soon. Far too soon.

"Activate Itemfinder," Celeste spoke as clearly as she could into the microphone of her Control Hub. There was a small sound that indicated that her voice had been picked up correctly, and an electronic voice in her headphones telling her that the program was active. The redhead smiled a little. It was official now; the Black Tesla had the best toys.

That didn't quite brighten her up enough to feel good about walking through the low-visibility aftermath of one of the most traumatizing episodes of her life. Not long ago, this frozen ground was muddy, and she was marching in an army to clash with a horde of foreign warriors and their war machine. She'd fled, gripping to Raijin's back with Steely, as the entire place was flooded and flash frozen.

Shilo was walking at her side, silent, but occasionally flicking her eyes toward Celeste. She hadn't bothered trying to make conversation with her sneasel, because she knew she was upset. Not her white-hot rage, but merely annoyance and, perhaps, hurt feelings. Celeste was not surprised in the slightest; after all, she'd taken on a sea monster without her presence or even knowledge.

For now, they were on the move, cutting through a wasteland filled with memories more chilling than even the misty, icy air, to head to another nest of them. Brightopolis, where the losing battle had been fought that gave Celeste her first taste of war, was her planned destination. The struggle continued to haunt her dreams, the bodies as clear in as the day she'd seen them all those months ago. But it was over now, and she couldn't let ghosts of the past stop her.

The faint tone of the active Itemfinder's constant radar was the only sound as they walked.

Celeste was one of the first trainers (that anyone cares about) to brave this frozen wasteland. Which is kind of crazy, all things considered. It looked nothing like how they'd left it during the battle. The air was thicker and heavier, the ground crusted with ice and freezing water. Visibility was completely crappy, and only a faint idea was their guide in direction. Westward, hoping they were going the right direction.

There was a really soft, faint, almost unheard noise ahead and above. It was so quiet that the noise itself might have been a ghost. Next came a faint humming. It was actually a very soothing noise, aside from its abruptness.

"Celeste!"

The swooshing noise suddenly got louder, and a form of blue suddenly clarified into an altaria with something sitting on it. The blue bird landed and the human-creature slid off, beaming at Celeste with fangs and horns. The odd troll-person that Celeste had fought in the Little Cup was here!

"Good, right where you said you'd be. And not a moment too soo-" she took a step with her digitigrade dinosaur-ish feet, happened to step on a piece of ice, and slipped right into the swamp. Her altraia chirped and moved to help her up. The troll spit out some mud and looked at Celeste with a little grin, "Want some company? And hello, Shilo," she stood up and tried to brush mud and muck off of her cloak.

Alright, you have a choice here. I've kinda been wanting to do this since the tournament ended, but you went on your Dive quest right about the time I was thinking of the details in my head. And I don't know if you're wanting a fudd mod that badly or not, so...

So you can either travel with Raggy for a while, and I'll keep (doing my best to) mod you though I should be able to do pretty good since I'm really excited about this lol. Or you can see her some other time and get a Fudd mod next round. Up to you!

Maybe it was her short time in the military, whose base was on a frozen island, but Celeste wasn't having too much trouble with the ice. Shilo, of course, was having no trouble at all, having adopted a four-legged posture and easily scurrying along the frozen surface. The heavy fog was less easy to deal with for both of them, making Loch Neeru look like Brightopolis Beach in comparison. Celeste trusted her Control Hub's map, but that didn't make it harder for any possible inhabitants to sneak up on them.

Which was why both of them started, Shilo bristling and looking around to try to catch sight of anything in the fog, at the sound of humming. Celeste pulled off her headphones, letting them sit around her neck, to try to hear better. It was a soothing sound, but the redhead was paranoid, and she found her hand moving to her whip. Between fox-demons, sea monsters, and Arceus only knew what else this valley was hiding, she felt it was better to be safe than sorry.

When it turned out to be an altaria, Celeste relaxed just a little bit, since at least it was something recognizable, and when it landed and she got a good look at the rider, her anxiety melted away as she flashed a smile. "Raggy!" She briefly looked worried when the horned woman slipped, but when she just spat out the mud and smiled Celeste couldn't help but let out a small, good-natured laugh. Of all the parts of her past that could come back here, Agatha was the last one she expected. A friendly and familiar (if a little strange) face that didn't remind her of painful things was extremely welcome. "Sure. That'd be great."

Shilo, meanwhile, was still in high-alert mode, glaring daggers at Raggy with her claws fully extended and body tense. This...she didn't know what knew her name. The fact that Celeste wasn't afraid was probably the only reason the sneasel hadn't become violent. The redhead looked at her distressed pokemon friend and frowned a little. "It's okay, Shilo. She's a friend." Shilo relaxed, but she still eyed the troll-person with suspicion. For all her insistence on learning to speak, the dark type could still often be eerily silent.

It wasn't that Celeste hadn't noticed anything odd about what Raggy had said, but there was something about her that just made Celeste willing to go with the flow. Probably the whole not human thing. She carefully crossed the distance between them, struck by the urge to try petting that altaria. She would, if the bird-dragon would let her, as she asked, "How've you been?"

Now that Celeste had a chance to get a closer look at her strange friend, she could notice all the little oddities about her. She was wearing a similar hooded cloak from before, though she wasn't wearing the hood itself, and there were holes in the hood that were secured closed with buttons on the edge. Likely for her horns. There was a red gear on the right side of the open front, and her orange Aries symbol was still on her black shirt under the cloak. Still gray skinned and orange eyed, still with her vividly colored orange/orange-yellow/yellow spiral ram horns curling down to her pointed ears, and claws on her fingers instead of typical human nails. When she smiled, it was easier to see that she was supposed to have two tusk-fangs poking up out of her black lips, but the other one was gone with just a gap left behind.

"I have been alright. Very busy with everything," she said, her manner of speaking slightly slow and measured. She took a second to wring out her ponytail and pick some algae off of the dyed orange tip. The bird seemed to tune into Celeste's wishes pretty quickly, and stuck her head out into Celeste's hands to get stroked. Raggy noticed, and laughed.

"But, what are you up to? I think you just got done with Neeruey," she looked around, like the location itself would be confirmation, "And you're headed for... Brightopolis, right?" she grinned at Celeste again, pleased with herself.

Trolls are weird. And if Celeste wanted to keep walking, they sure could. The immediate area that they could see (three feet in any direction) didn't seem to have anything interesting in it. Beyond that was a wall of moisture that could have been solid. Nobody would know until you smacked right into it.

I could babble about my fancharacters for days. >.>

Trolls are weird is right. Shilo slowly became more of a ball of I do not like this person the more Raggy spoke. Even if her human companion had developed some kind of blind spot regarding the grey-skinned, ram-horned woman, the sneasel sure hadn't.

Celeste giggled a little when the altaria stuck her head in her hands, and she happily stroked the dragon type. She really needed to catch a swablu sometime. Her hands didn't stop in her petting as Raggy accurately guessed (though it really didn't sound like a guess) where she'd been and where she was going, but she did cringe a little at the thought of the sea monster. "Yeah," she said. She'd taken a little offscreen time to recover, but it still felt like she'd 'just' gotten out of that Loch. Bringing her mind back to Brightopolis, which was a slightly cheerier topic, she added, "I'm going to head to the mall there. I need a Dusk Stone for my Misdreavus, and I figured I'd browse the TMs."

Celeste pulled her headphones up over her ears again (not that it really stopped her from hearing anything, since her Control Hub was being pretty much completely silent; she just wanted to be able to hear if the Itemfinder found something) and adjusted the microphone a little. She started walking again, pausing once to make sure Raggy was with her and not slipping and falling on the ice, and that Shilo was also with her and not trying to set fire to the troll woman with her mind. Or at least not succeeding at it. "Then Mayriver. Not sure after that."

Well, she was fairly sure what immediately after, assuming that she was interpreting the poem from the Fly HM properly. And that she actually got up the nerve to find out. 'On your bones, he may just feast' did not exactly fill her with enthusiasm.

She hummed and bobbed her head, as if this was all things she already knew. At this point, what Celeste didn't know wasn't going to hurt her, hehe. She didn't really have anything else to say to that, still smiling with her tusk sticking out.

"You will be fine," she said mysteriously, still smiling as she followed along, "Oh, and this is Cotton. I'd forgotten that you don't know her name yet," she gestured at the bird, who chirruped loudly and fluttered her cloud-like wings.

Almost as if on some kind of cue, they could hear something splashing around a bit to their left, and some annoyed trilling. It sounded like another bird, which made Cotton hurry off in that direction, making excited noises.

"...oops," she bit her lip gently and followed after the bird, claws splashing in the muck.

What they found was a bewildered starly, and the altaria sounding like she was talking to the little bird with great excitement. Almost like she knew her. But the starling just looked completely confused.

"Cotton, hun, she doesn't know you yet. We're a couple of months in the past, remember?" she patted the big blue bird on the shoulder, and she whistled unhappily, like she didn't understand.

So while this no doubt confusing exchange was going on: The starly hadn't flown away yet, but was sitting on a patch of ice with wide eyes. She was either really jaded or really curious as to what was going on here, because she looked from the altaria, then to Celeste, and then back again. Luckily she didn't see Shilo yet, because cats and birds didn't mix very well.

Celeste gave Raggy an odd look at her statement, though she smiled at Cotton upon the introduction. She was almost going to ask, or at least say thank you for the encouragment regarding...whatever mysterious thing she was talking about. Then a chirping started and Cotton raced off, with Raggy right behind her and Celeste right behind Raggy.

"You're what." Friend and team leader who could shoot electricity. Team mate who could sense Aura to compensate for blindness. Fought a shapeshifting fox-monster. All that still didn't make what Raggy just said any less completely bizarre. Though, the fact that the starly kept looking at her drew her attention away for the moment. She flashed a friendly smile and waved a little. "Uh, hi there, Starly. For the record, I'm probably more confused than you are."

Shilo was keeping back, half-obscured by the mist, mostly because she knew from dealing with Celeste's own birds that they didn't tend to like her very much, with the exception of Ares, the skarmory. Well, he didn't like her either, to be frank, but that was more due to her tendency to perch on his head or tailfeathers and not because apparently she looked like a predator. Better to just let the human handle it, since she liked things with feathers so much and probably wanted to convince the bird to come with them.

"In the past. From the last time I spoke to you," she patted Cotton, as if there was nothing strange about this at all.

The starly made another bewildered whistling noise, and looked at Celeste. She fluttered a little closer to the human, because humans were less scary then weird horned people that traveled through time. Cotton sagged, dismayed, and decided to make herself feel better by hugging Raggy with her cotton wings and humming. The troll chuckled and patted the bird on the head.

Well, that left them distracted for the moment, so Celeste could deal with the bird however she wanted now. The black and white pokemon looked into the water, and now the redhead could see that she was slightly damp; likely the thing that had been splashing around in the water earlier. Looking for food? This wasn't the most hospitable place for a bird, at any rate.

Celeste gave Raggy a 'repeating it doesn't make it less weird' look, and she suddenly remembered that the horned woman had been announced at the Little Cup tournament as a 'Thief of Time.' Apparently the title was a little less metaphorical than she'd thought at the time. Okay, she could sort of accept the possibility of time travel, if she didn't think about all the horrible headaches that the phenomenon inspired in people who really took the time to consider all the paradoxes involved...Oh, look, cute little birdie fluttering over to her!

Celeste rather quickly knelt down to get a better look at the little bird, smiling gently. Some people considered starly pests, but she had always found them cute. "She's not as scary as she looks, you know," she commented, meaning Raggy, "Just really confusing." Then, shrugging off her ever-present pack, she asked, "You hungry?" As if she really needed to; the poor little thing was a bird in a frozen wasteland, and she was pretty sure even a starly's eyes couldn't cut through this fog very well. Of course she was hungry.

Going through the bag for a second, Celeste let out a small, "Ah-hah!" before holding a cookie with bits of berries in it out to the bird. If she seemed hesitant to take it, she'd put it on the ground instead, but Celeste preferred it not get soggy. "Here. You'll like it."

Yeah, it really is better to just... not think about it too hard. Cute birds are way more simple.

The starly looked at Raggy with disbelief when Celeste said that she wasn't that scary. It was some kind of weird pokemon-ish human-ish thing, it was terrifying. Though unlike a lot of the stuff in this valley, it hadn't tried to eat her yet, so... well, she supposed she could believe it.

She was about to whistle with confusion again, when suddenly there were cookies. Really tasty smelling cookies. The bird descended on the cookie like a half starved, wild creature would. Celeste would be lucky if she got away with her fingers, here.

In the background, Raggy seemed content with just listening to Cotton hum, but something was still bothering her. She looked over at Shilo, standing back so she didn't scare the bird. "Sorry. I didn't mean to startle you," she said suddenly. All this weird time stuff was a little hard for even her to keep up with sometimes.

Starly finished the cookie in record time, and looked up at Celeste like she wanted more food. Granted, she was perching on Celeste's hand now and peering up at her with the most adorable, sad bird eyes. Like the redhead needed any encouragement here.

The last starly she had fed had been a little more wary, but Celeste was used to protecting her hands from ravenous pokemon and managed to keep all her fingers intact. More-or-less. She'd had worse. After all, the fact that she regularly used food as a way of winning over pokemon in the first place tended to mean she got the ones that were used to little short of inhaling anything edible.

At the sad eyes, Celeste seemed to coo a little as she stroked the little bird's breastfeathers with the pointer finger of her free hand. "You don't have to pounce on it, y'know. It won't run away." She chuckled as she pulled out another cookie, this time a bit better prepared just in case instinct won out over any desire the starly may have to follow her advice. Celeste decided that she really needed to get the recipe for these. Or maybe try developing her own. She was cultivating Watmel berries, and the farmhouse on the ranch did have a kitchen. A little freeforming trail-and-error cooking may be in order the next time she was there.

Shilo's feather-ear twitched when Raggy addressed her. Well, that was a pleasant surprise. The fact that she now had a explanation for the woman's knowledge, albeit a very strange one, plus the, admittedly delayed, show of manners, eased the sneasel's suspicion. She slipped into a proper two-legged posture and inclined her head slightly. "Apology accepted," she said calmly, deciding that the time traveler probably already knew that she could speak. Not that she generally kept it a secret in the first place.

Being in a frozen wasteland prolly didn't help the whole ravenous pokemon thing much.

She seemed to like being stroked after a few seconds of it, looking unsure at first. But, this human was nice. She hadn't actually seen a human at all since this place froze over. Who knows how long she'd been here? She knew, but she wasn't going to tell. At least not right now.

With something in her belly already, the little bird was willing to wait this time and eat the cookie more sedately, like a normal creature. She finished the cookie and sighed heavily afterwards. So full of cookie.

The troll grinned at Shilo in that weird knowing sort of way that she did. Cotton trilled merrily, wordless but full of joy. What a happy dragon-burd. Even though it was really cold, and Raggy could feel her shivering. "Want to go back inside?" she whispered to the bird, who hesitated but decided that it was way too cold here. The altraia disappeared in a flash of red, and Raggy put the ball back in her pocket and started poking around in the muck with her feet. Didn't hurt, while she was waiting.

Celeste smiled, going back to gently stroking the wild bird when she was finished eating. It was a good thing the starly was so little. She did have more cookies, and probably would have continued feeding her them without a second thought, but all the same she was glad that her whole batch hadn't been devoured. She was also rather relieved that attacking her food didn't seem to be the starly's default setting. It was now that Celeste allowed her mind to go back to what Raggy had been saying. Cotton knew this starly from the future (it sounded weird to even think those words), and it was fairly easy to assume it wasn't because Raggy had caught her...

"Must be pretty hard finding food out here, huh?" she commented with one of her gentle smiles. "Since things froze over, at least." She flicked her eyes left, then right, even though there was really little she could see of the icy wasteland with the ever-present fog. "I was actually here on the day the valley flooded and froze," she said, sighing and frowning as the bad memory came drifting back. "I barely escaped in time." Trying to bring back her smile, she asked, "Have you ever thought of leaving? There are much warmer places past the mountains. No fog, either."

Shilo's ears pinned back a little at that grin. She'd really like it Raggy stopped doing that. Seeing that look on her teachers' faces as a youngster had been frustrating enough, let alone on a stranger. Though, on the troll woman's end, they weren't strangers. The sneasel wondered, for a moment, what their 'first' meeting was like, and then decided that she'd wait for it to happen and see. Shilo noticed what Raggy was doing with her feet, and she moved back to a four-legged posture to scratch a bit at the icy, muddy ground with her claws. A zigzagoon she was not, but maybe there was something interesting under the ice that she could find. It killed time, at any rate.

Starly whistled in agreement and looked around too. Yeah, the human hit the nail on the head there. She shivered at the mention of the day the valley froze over. The little bird didn't want to think about that. So much wet and cold and chaos. She hadn't been near the battlefield, but since the whole valley got frozen...

She stared at Celeste when she offered to take her with them. Aside from the fact this place was barren and nobody had dared to cross through it yet, trainers generally didn't like starly. Thought they were pests, or too common to care about.

The little bird launched herself at the trainer to cling with her wings and chirp and trill. Shilo might be able to translate it as "yes please get me out of here, I've been lost forever and it's so cold" etc etc.

Bird, get! Four happyhearts from the cookies!

Celeste's traveling companion chuckled to herself, still sloshing around in the mud. Celeste's itemfinder hadn't gone off, so there likely wasn't anything around, but it never hurt to check. At least she had a bird now.

"Whoa! Hey!" Celeste nearly fell over when the starly launched herself at her. She was getting flashbacks from when she captured Leo. "Glad to have your aboard," she said with a small laugh as she half-petted, half-tried to pry off the wild bird with one hand. The other hand went to her pack, and she pulled out an empty pokeball. "I've already got six with me, but there's this ranch where my other pokemon go. It's nice and warm and sunny. Here."

The starly paused in her fit of enthusiastic thanks to peer at the device, then gently pecked the centre and vanished inside. Celeste picked herself up as the capsule vanished, smiling. Shilo, having dug a nice little hole in one patch of ice, abandoned her efforts a few moments after the bird was gone and walked over. "She's so cute," Celeste near-squealed, causing the sneasel to snort a little as she brushed the bits of muddy ice from her claws.

Celeste smiled at Raggy. "So, think there's anyone else you know out here?" she half-joked, starting to walk again. She didn't know if Raggy would tell her, or even if she could, since maybe time travelers had rules about that stuff, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

"The cute ones are always nice to have," she piped up, giving up her searching as well. She moved closer, adjusting her cloak tighter around her form and shoving her hands in her pockets. Her breath seemed to produce a bigger cloud of steam then Celeste's did, which didn't mean anything aside from a random observation.

The corner of her mouth with the tusk on it quirked in a smile at her question, and she didn't answer right away as they continued walking. "I always have to wonder how much I tell past individuals so I don't mess things up, but I always remember that Paradox Space is very strange. Everything always works out. Sometimes things only happen because you know about them in advance," she grinned. She could go on to explain how Paradox Space always seemed to make everything one giant self-fulfilling clusterfuck, but it wasn't important. The human girl didn't really need to understand.

"And there is, somewhere. Not everything is as friendly as your little bird, though."

Her talons clicked on the ice as the slush had steadily frozen deeper and deeper, until now they were standing on the edge of a plane of solid ice, stretching out of their sight. Raggy looked down and dug her claws into the ice a little, wiggling to make sure she was steady.

Celeste's itemfinder started going off, and after walking a short ways north, she found what it was going on about. A single pokeball, under about a half inch layer of ice. Awesome.

Celeste smiled. Yeah, cute things were great. Of course, cute little starly evolved into big, powerful staraptor, but she liked those too.

Celeste nodded her head at what Raggy was saying, even though the words 'Paradox Space' meant absolutely nothing to her. What she was saying about things working out made some sense, though, since she probably wouldn't have met and captured that starly if Cotton hadn't recognized her and ran off to say hello in the first place. The mention of not everything being friendly just earned a small laugh. "Not a lot of wild pokemon are," she replied. The fact that she finally got a meowth due to it being handed to her by magical luvdisc because the wild ones kept trying to claw her to bits was not something she forgot easily. It all worked out pretty well, though, since Queenie was a sweet cat, but still.

Then, as the looked out at the plain of ice, a soft beeping came from Celeste's Control Hub. "Activate display," she spoke as clearly as she could into the microphone, and the holographic interface formed in front of her. There were two blinking dots, one her and one the located object, and Celeste headed toward the mystery item, nearly slipping once but managing to keep her footing fairly well. Shilo scurried as effortlessly as ever next to her, until they reached the pokeball sitting under the transparent ice. Not exactly a Spooky Plate, but, hey, pokeballs cost money. "Think you can dig it out?" she asked Shilo, who nodded and extended her claws before scratching at the ice.

Crack! Oh crap.

A panicked look overcame Celeste's face as she realized that the kangaskhan egg Steely had given her was hatching, and she scrambled to get ready. She ended up sitting none-too-comfortably on the ice, the cream-coloured egg in her lap, and grabbing at supplies as cracks spiderwebbed over the shell. A chunk of eggshell went flying and hit Celeste right in the face, revealing a little clawed fist sparking with electricity.

More bits of shell went flying in different direction as the infant little short of thrashed her way out of her egg, until Celeste had a squirming baby Kangaskhan in her lap. She immediately went to work toweling the little creature off and wrapping her up to hold her close. She didn't exactly have a pouch, so she substituted a hug. "It's okay, little Duchess," she cooed softly. The baby pokemon settled down quickly, just cuddling up to her 'mommy' contentedly and making a soft squeaking noise.

After a moment, the newborn Duchess looked around, blinking at all the fog, and the first thing she noticed was Shilo, whose progress had slowed considerably because she'd stopped to watch the birth and bonding. The kangaskhan looked at the pokeball in the ice, and the small hole Shilo was digging, and the little gears in her baby brain started turning. Suddenly, Duchess inhaled deeply and spat out a burst of flame nearly as big as she was at the ice.

Shilo nothing short of shrieked and scrambled out of the way of the Fire Blast attack, actually slipping a little on the ice in her haste. Duchess just put her claws to her face and giggled, babbling something that more-or-less meant 'funny kitty.'

.3 :gexp2 cute! 3 happy for the baby. And yeah, Frozen Valley. Right on the edge.

The troll navigated slowly over the ice, wobbling and digging her claws in so she didn't slip and eat frozen nothing. She was about to tell Shilo that she could help dig it out with her scythe, when the baby decided now was a great time to come into the world.

While Celeste was dealing with the baby, she suddenly had an unusually warm cloak draped over her shoulders and a shivering troll crossing her bare arms next to her. If Celeste looked at her or said anything, the troll would just shrug and continue shivering, arms crossed over her humanoid chest.

And then she fell over!

Well, she jumped with surprise just like Shilo did, but unfortunately her orange claws didn't fine purchase on the ice and she slipped backwards with a resonating SNAP of her horns on the ice, which cracked under the impact. The ice cracked, I mean. "I really should be flying here, but no, I have to walk," she grumbled quietly. It took her a couple of times of trying to sit up, but she yanked her horn spikes out and sat up.

"Babies," she chuckled, reaching back to scrape ice off of her horns.

Celeste nearly jumped, and probably would have if not for the infant in her lap, when Raggy hit the ice. Despite the warmth of the cloak, Duchess was quick to try to scramble out of it and over Celeste's shoulder to see what that noise was, and it was wrestling with the kangaskhan that kept her from trying to help Raggy remove her horns from the ice. Luckily, she managed well enough on her own, and Celeste chuckled a little with her, finally deciding to just turn herself around so her new baby could see.

Duchess stared at Raggy with big eyes, then squeaked and made grabby-hand motions at her while trying to wriggle out of Celeste's arms again. Well, that hadn't helped stop the escape attempt. "Okay, okay," Celeste laughed as she scooted closer to Raggy so that the little kangaskhan could reach her hands out to her and indulge her curiosity without leaving her mommy's lap.

Shilo, meanwhile, fished the pokeball out of where the ice had been and walked over to hand it to Celeste, who smiled. "Thanks."

Shilo nodded at the word, then stared hard at the infant Kangaskhan. "Aphrodite will be happy," Shilo said calmly, not giving any indication on how she felt about that. Then she stated what she was actually thinking. "She's powerful. She's going to need discipline."

Celeste couldn't help but agree with that. Steely had clearly given her a super baby here. She smiled a little at Shilo. "Well, I know you can handle it."

The sneasel gave another small nod, but the way her feather-ear pricked gave away her mild surprise at the confidence. She was more than comfortable with her own skills, but teaching was something altogether different, and this was a very young student of a species she wasn't overly familiar with. Not to mention that Duchess had very nearly made her into a flambe.

Not wanting to leave Raggy without her cloak for too long, Celeste very lightly tapped Duchess on the plate on top her head to get her attention. She looked up and squeaked, flicking an ear. "Time for you to go someplace warmer. Someone should be able to handle you down at the ranch." Between Aphrodite and Duchess' biological mother, Raine, she knew the infant was in good hands. She tapped the pokeball they'd found gently on the infant's arm, and it sucked her in with a small squeak. The capsule hopped a couple of times, then stilled and vanished.

"Here," Celeste said as she pulled the cloak off and handed it back to Raggy. "Thanks." She got up, slipping a couple of times until she was standing as steadily as she could. This was most definitely a step above the swamp on the slippery scale, but she was still pretty sure she had the balance to be able to handle it, even though she didn't have claws. They were heading toward the dunes rather than north through the majority of the frozen valley, anyway, and no one said they had to take this at full sprint.

As soon as Raggy was ready, Celeste would start walking again, a little more slowly.

The troll stared back at Duchess, eyebrows raised up and with a smile that only moved her lips. Trying not to scare the baby? Regardless, she tucked her knees up to her chest and held her hands out to the little one, hands curled inward so the kanga couldn't hurt herself on the troll's claws. Now she finally did smile and show some teeth, leaning her head down so the baby could touch the rounded base of her horns, if she wanted to.

"Y-your welcome," she shivered, taking her cloak back and tossing it back on. She very carefully got her feet back under her and steadied herself with her hands as she straightened back up, "I really should... ah," she reached into a pocket, and it looked for a second like she pulled out a card, though instead she suddenly had a scythe in her hand. The bottom end of it was pointed, and she stuck it down into the ice for balance.

She continued after Celeste, doing her best to keep a good grip on the ice and not fall over. "Just so I'm sure, this is the first time you've seen me since the tournament, right?" she asked. After she got her response, fate decided to throw something else at them.

"Speeeeeear!"

Raggy had the sense to duck as a small feathery missile swooped above her head, screaming profane things in pokemon language about people in his territory. It wasn't much of a territory, but it was his.

So now there's an angry little bird attacking their heads. What will Celeste do?

Scare Duchess? Not likely.

The scythe earned a bit of a raised eyebrow, but, then again, Celeste had a retractable electric whip, so who was she to talk? Besides, a hyperspace scythe didn't really compare to time travel on the what-the-heck scale. She question earned a small smile. "Yeah, it is." She paused and then asked, "Got to be kinda hard to keep all that stuff straight, huh?"

Then they were under attack by a bird. Celeste ducked a little as well, losing her balance somewhat and scrambling to keep upright. She was reminded a little of Talia at this moment, though, to be fair, the then-taillow hadn't exactly attacked her out of nowhere. Celeste was about to make some sort of attempt to pacify the bird, when another scream rung out, this time from the sneasel next to her. Shilo had decided to take things into her own claws with this dishonourable beast.

She lacked any ice attacks, and was a lower level, but she didn't really care. Claws extended, she made to leap the next time the spearow swooped down and give him a good slashing.

The troll woman clamped her hands over her ears at Shilo's screeching, mumbling about how loud they were as the battle happened Over There. She blinked a few times and looked at Celeste after she drew her hands away from her ears and out of her horns (reaching her ears in the first place was kind of an endeavor).

"Keeping track of this is actually pretty easy. I was just making sure I had finally come back enough. Try keeping track of multiple copies of yourself in the same timeline, and keeping the loops stable so you don't become doomed."

No pressure, you see.

The screech got the jump on the spearow, startling the pokemon attacking the two humanoids, but he turned towards Shilo and became a little flying drill, striking her just before she slashed him. The attack left both of them reeling, though the sneasel moreso then the bird. Shilo was lucky that she'd surprised the thing... it didn't get the chance to attack twice.

Celeste blinked, and mouthed the word 'doomed?' in a way that probably would have sounded high-pitched and squeaky if she'd actually used her voice. That begged the question of why Raggy would want to time-travel in the first place. Celeste sure didn't now, short of a 'go back/forward in time and save the world' type of situation, and even that was less a 'want' thing and more a 'I'm not going to let the world be screwed over because of my cowardice' thing.

Of course, Shilo being left reeling had priority over hypothetical paranoid time travel scenarios, and Celeste's attention snapped to the battle, going for the sneasel's pokeball. That spearow hit hard. Though, rather than let herself be recalled and someone else take the field like a sane pokemon, Shilo shook her head sharply to clear it and tore toward the bird with a shout, her form blurring with speed as she jumped and went for a full-body tackle. Celeste nearly dropped her pokeball and grasped at another one without thinking.

Only after she'd thrown an empty pokeball at the spearow did she realize what she'd done. This really was like Talia.

Raggy had this knowing, weary sort of smirk on her face but knew now wasn't the time to get into that sort of thing.

Shilo zipped in, fixing the problem of the spearow being faster then her, and struck the bird. Already weakened from the screech, the bird reeled slightly and prepared to dive again before being struck by the pokeball. The ball dinged off the ice and rolled to a stop while still wiggling. It eventually went DING to signal a successful capture, which was good because he would have creamed Shilo otherwise.

The troll was scratching something in the smooth ice at her feet, and only elaborated when Celeste looked, "Doomed. Paradox Space is strange, but also extremely unforgiving. Any deviations from its planned course results in a doomed timeline, generally where everyone dies. It may be because of a teammate's choice or it might be because you went insane and killed all of your friends," she said with a wry grin. The ice showed a straight line stretching quite a ways, with smaller lines coming off of it at different points and running parallel to the main line.

"The good thing is that you can go back to before the point that the timeline split off, and be of assistance still. Especially during an en masse attack on the final boss," she put an X at one point, though it wasn't the end of the line.

"So that happens if you don't understand stable time loops. If you're a Hero of Time, you learn quickly just by nature," she looked at Celeste and shrugged, "I don't think there's much chance of a doomed timeline happening here, though. This universe seems... just different. I don't think it's part of the cycle."

Confused yet?

The bird was defeated, or at least no longer a threat, and Shilo tried to steady her breathing. The wound from the wild pokemon's attack hurt, but she walked back without even a wince. Pain rarely slowed her down.

Of course, that little bird was going to be a bundle of pissed off when he saw Celeste again, but they'd cross that bridge when they came to it.

Confused? Yes, but not quite as much as she felt she really should be. Celeste decided, in that moment, that she'd played far too many video games back home, mostly because she found herself nodding at the words 'final boss' and only realizing that it was an odd way of putting it after Raggy finished her explanation. She wasn't really sure what to comment on for a moment, between the use of the example of 'went insane and killed all your friends,' the phrase 'Hero of Time,' and the comment on this universe.

Celeste decided fairly quickly to go with the last one, mostly because she knew more about her own universe (or at least she thought she did) than any of this Paradox Space stuff. "I...almost want to ask 'compared to what,' but I think I know what you mean by 'different.' I mean...it almost seems like someone can end up in Oppaddeka from Arceus-knows-where by sneezing, and I don't think that's normal." She shrugged. "Not that I have anything to compare it to." She didn't really want to have anything to compare it to, either.

Shilo looked off to one side, seeming to stare into the distance despite the thick fog. "Were we fortunate, it would be as easy to make them leave," she said bitterly. Suddenly, her feather-ear pricked and she brought her attention back to Raggy. "Present company excluded."

Celeste didn't comment, mostly because she knew who Shilo was referring to, and she really didn't want to think about Eisen right now. "Maybe I should stop asking questions," she said with a small, slightly nervous, laugh. "Good to know there's a not much of a chance of an apocalypse, though." There was part of Celeste that was terrified right now, but she was pretty used to shoving fear to the back of her mind by now, and, besides, Raggy knew what she was talking about, right? There would be nightmares now, though, if rocks falling and everyone dying could fight and win against war, sea monsters, demon foxes, and everything else lurking in her head for the chance to torment her at night.

Celeste's head: Not a fun place to be.

But there wasn't much of a point in sticking around here, unless something else was going to swoop out of nowhere and try to peck her eyes out. Best to keep going.

The troll chuckled and brushed the shavings of ice back into the cracks, patting them down with her foot, "It almost seems like a dumping ground for those who have become lost. A sphere in the Furthest Ring that remains untouched by the horrors. It is a nice place to be stuck, though," she shrugged and looked at Shilo when the catweasel spoke. Raggy was unusually quiet for a second.

"Trust me, Shilo, if I could go home I would," she shook her head, "But that's a tale I don't feel like telling again. You'll hear it at some point."

She brightened up a little, "You can ask me questions; it just means less questions you'll ask me later," she chuckled, "And no, I don't think this planet will get destroyed by meteors. Like I said, it's out of the loop, I think. Even though I've met a few humans who could easily have titles of their own. Like the Thief you told me about, and your leader the Knight."

Celeste's itemfinder suddenly started going off, though it was faint and distant. It was pointing to their right, and if Celeste cared to check it out... it would be pointing right at the frozen monument. Raggy stopped when it came into view, looming frozen and terrible in the fog, and looked at her human traveling buddy. She wasn't bothered by the monument... but then again, Celeste didn't know that Raggy was very... very familiar with death. Celeste didn't really need to know.

Celeste tried not to show it, but Raggy lost her at the sentence, 'A sphere in the Furthest Ring that remains untouched by the horrors.' Shilo nodded her head silently, respectful of the woman's wishes; in a smaller way, not being to return home was something she understood. Not wishing to tell her story was also something she was very familiar with.

If she hadn't before, Raggy really lost her when she started talking about titles. Especially when she talked about her leader being a 'Knight.' Given that the only leader she immediately thought of was the one of the Black Tesla, the mental image of Steely in a suit of armor, on Bec's back, holding a lance, did not take long to pop into her head. I shouldn't be allowed to imagine things, she thought to herself, trying to push the goofy image away.

The beeping of her Control Hub helped in that regard, grabbing her attention. "Activate display." Normally she would have hesitated to make the detour, but part of why she had the Itemfinder on in the first place was to try to find a plate for Ben. It was long overdue.

That didn't stop her from stopping dead in her tracks at the sight of the monument. The frozen war machine was exactly what she'd been trying to avoid with her route. She met Raggy's eyes when the troll looked at her, and bit her lip. The problem with all this time travel was that she didn't know what she'd already told Raggy in the future. Were her feelings even the same now than they would be in her friend's memory if she had? A lot could happen in a couple of months, something she already knew all too well. Though the idea of ever being at peace with this seemed like a fantasy.

Celeste looked away, inhaled an icy lungful of breath, and kept walking toward the towering reminder of the war she'd played a part in. The valley looked so different, but for a moment, in her mind's eye, it was the same as it was that day, mist swirling around the platoons as they tried to see the enemy marching toward them, the hissing of the energy field above their heads as the war machine pelted them missles, Steely's rifle heavy and unnatural in her hands...

Reality was frigidly cold and quiet, which didn't help the memories much at all. There wasn't anything to break up the sounds and sights of what had once happened. The troll she was traveling with seemed to be struggling to try and think of something to say, but kept coming up empty if her silence was any judge. Instead, she did what she knew best: She kept her scythe forward and eyes scanned everything for any signs of movement or anything. Nothing was going to get the jump on them if she had anything to say about it.

They approached the fortress, frozen over with icicles hanging from any extended parts. The jagged bits of metal and ice helped its sinister, dead appearance. The itemfinder directed them up to one of the blue armored sides, but continued pointing inwards.

"Huh," she rapped her claws on the metal, hearing it hollowly ring. She looked at Shilo, "Do you want to open it, or should I?"

Whatever they decided, the armor cracked and shattered easily enough, and after pushing some wires out of the way, they found... a spooky plate. Spooky!

Now, Raggy was standing back a few feet, head tilted so one ear was facing towards the fortress and up slightly. Her eyes darted back and fourth like they were searching for something. Shilo might have heard the noise too; a very faint whirring sound. It wasn't exactly... a mechanical whirring sound. Maybe that weirdness is what the troll was trying to figure out what it was.

Up to Celeste if they stuck around or ran away from the fortress, though.

Celeste was still quiet when they reached the monument, staring at the metal corpse in an unfocused manner as the ghosts of the battle played out behind her eyes. Her hands were shaking, and it had nothing to do with the cold. The sound of Raggy knocking on the wall with her claws seemed to snap her out of it a little bit, and she blinked at Shilo as the sneasel raised her claws.

"I will." She was tired and in pain, but Shilo still raced forward and struck the metal wall with a series of furious claw strikes to shatter it. She retrieved the plate and held it out to Celeste, who knelt down and took it.

"Ben's going to like this," she said softly, with an attempt at an smile. Shilo merely nodded as Celeste stood up again and studied the smooth grey plate. Frankly, there was something about it that set the sneasel a bit on edge, but it faded when her human companion tucked it away.

Shilo's feather-ear twitched at the odd sound, and the dark weasel found herself glancing around, both ears pricked forward. At Celeste's questioning stare, she said, "There's something here."

Celeste blinked. She couldn't hear anything, so she couldn't begin to help. Part of her just wanted to turn away, put as much distance between herself and this Arceus-forsaken thing as possible, but...the way the other two were directing their hearing at the corpse of the war machine made her hesitate. "Something's...trapped in there?" She wouldn't wish that fate on anything.

"I can't tell," she admitted, listening hard still, "It sounds like... something spinning. I can't tell..." she stopped as it started getting louder, to the point where Celeste would be able to hear it, and hear it easily. It started sounding like a helicopter, but not exactly. Heavier, perhaps?

Raggy took a step back, "I don't like this," she said suddenly. Whatever she didn't like suddenly came whirring into sight and stopped above them, snapping to face them. It was a big, angry looking snowflake that... looked like it was glowing?

"Oh."

A leftover Cryogonal from the war obviously didn't like them being so close. Perhaps it was still programmed to destroy everything it saw... at least that's how it looked. Raggy reached into her coat but hesitated, trying to remember. Something had better happen quickly, before that thing finishes charging.

Both Shilo and Celeste were immediately on edge at the words 'I don't like this,' and both backed up when the ice pokemon flew into their midst. A Cryogonal. Those pokemon had been at the Battle of Brightopolis, the March on Murmur Valley...just laying eyes on the snowflake-shaped pokemon sent a chill racing down Celeste's spine, even as her hand snapped to her pokeballs. "Shilo, don't." The injured weasel very reluctantly stopped herself from lunging at the glowing pokemon, seeming to realize what Celeste was going to do.

Talia appeared in a burst of light as Celeste shouted, "Steel Wing!" The bird was off in a blur of silver, lashing out with her wings at the wild pokemon. An empty pokeball found its way into Celeste's hand.

She never liked doing this sort of thing, but this pokemon was trapped, in a way. It was probably one of war pokemon; it may not know anything other than guarding the fortress. Besides, if that glow was what she thought it was, this was very likely the kindest way to avoid having them all end up splattered across the ice.

The swift little bird sliced through the cold air like a streak of blue and silver, just faster then the death snowflake. She struck it with metal edged wings and a pokeball flew shortly after, striking the monster and sucking it inside. The ball didn't even shake before it broke open, and the cryogonal fired.

Since the bird attacked, the snowflake directed the glowing green and yellow beam at her. It certainly wasn't as bad as it could have been, with the type matchups and everything, but the edges of the birds feathers were smoking slightly as the snowflake set up a defensive barrier against further attacks. Yup, looked pretty programmed.

Talia was just a teeny bit pissed off when she was blasted with the Solarbeam, and gave Celeste an accusatory look, which the trainer had to admit was justified; Talia had been chosen in part for her resistance to grass attacks. That and she was fast and her Steel Wing attack hit like a ton of bricks. The Cryogonal's reaction was fairly predictable; she may not have crossed the battlefield herself to engage them directly, but she still had some idea of what the pokemon had been programmed to do in battle.

Celeste just wanted to get this poor creature out of here that much more.

"Double Team!" she ordered, and Talia shot her one last sour look before doing as ordered, splitting into several copies to surround the ice pokemon in what looked like an army of birds. Another fighter joined her on the field as Sting appeared in a flash of red. "False Swipe!" The bee nodded and sped off, moving to slash the snowflake-shaped pokemon with his arm-spikes. Reflect would soften it, but Cryogonal did not exactly rival Rhyperior in their physical toughness.

Being the fastest one of all, the bird split before the giant snowflake could set up another screen, and give Sting an opening to attack. The bee swiped, doing a little damage that was softened by the shimmering screen that was up. The snow monster obviously shifted targets, leaving the bird free to split again.

The whirring started again as the cryogonal spun, becoming a buzzsaw of doom that flew like a deadly star towards Sting. It struck the bee and Sting sliced before they separated again, which gave Celeste an opening to throw the ball.

This time, the ball wiggled twice before breaking open again to a still spinning angry snowflake.

Raggy was still watching, though had a pokeball in her own hand. She looked at it, back at the battle, and pocketed it again. What she was thinking of using wouldn't help anymore, anyways, aside from another target for the rampaging snow creature.

Celeste's fears of the past had long taken a back seat by this point. Her bright green eyes studied the exchanging of blows, her mind processing it rapidly. Celeste had devoured all the information she could about these species as it became available, and the ones she had faced in the war had been top priority. "Talia, rip it down. Sting, speed up and give it another swipe," she commanded, her voice authoritative.

Talia flew toward the ice pokemon, duplicates circling it as deep growls rumbled from her. Cutting it's physical attacking ability would probably cause it to shift back to projectile attacks, but Talia was hidden in her illusion in case ice started being thrown around, and another Solarbeam would take time. As would a Haze attack, if it chose to respond that way. And if it knew Recover and tried it, she had something in mind for that, too. They just needed to keep in the fight and wear it down. Sting, meanwhile, without showing an ounce of pain, shot forward, his speed increasing, and lashed out again.

Another pokeball flew.

The sentient, murderous snowflake shuddered in the air, computing everything ever as quickly as it could. The conclusion it came up with was simple: That bird needed to go. So did the bee, but the bird first. Then the human. Then it could figure out whatever that was down there that was kinda human but not really.

Talia got off a growl before the cryogonal shuddered and started spinning again. The fog got thicker and hazier, dispelling the bird-copies and hardening the cryogonal's spikes immediately again. Sting was lucky enough to go last, zipping faster through the air and making the Jsegi pokemon rumble irritably. The swellow growled, beedrill stabbed again, and cryogonal shot a column of ice that made the bird drop to the ground like a sack of bricks.

And then another pokeball happened and again it busted out. What a jerk. Or my capture calc is a jerk, whichever.

The one time she didn't have status-causing pokemon, she needed one. The one time she needed stronger pokeballs, she, of course, didn't have them. Celeste made a mental note to carry some Pheonix balls from now on; that would make this whole thing so much easier. Not that she expected to be in this situation again but, well, she hadn't expected to be in this situation this time.

She recalled Talia, then pulled out another pokeball. A misdreavus appeared in flash of light and looked around. Maddie stared at the battle, then looked at Celeste in way that very effectively said 'are you kidding me?'

"Use Growl. Don't attack directly or confuse it. I want to catch it." The orders were delivered in a level tone, and before the ghost could protest, Celeste was going through her bag. Maddie gave a deep, dramatic sigh and drifted over to do as ordered. Celeste pulled out a Super Potion from her pack and quickly sprayed it on the anxious sneasel next to her. "Keep its attention." That thing was thinking faster than she was, and moving faster than she was anticipating; not to mention it was tearing through her pokeballs like tissue paper. She had to keep throwing variables at it and compromise its thinking to have fighting chance.

Another pokeball was at the ready.

The cryogonal decided to repair its drooping spikes with a quick sharpening, before Maddie came out and started growling, undoing its hard work. So, the snowflake changed tactics, targeting the bee and giving Celeste a chance to heal Shilo. It used another column of deadly ice on the bee, who didn't become as immediately fainted as Talia did.

That and besides, Sting was one of Jolt's old pokemon. He wasn't going down that easy.

Shilo's taunting happened at some point, which didn't matter too much since the snowflake was already on the offensive. Maddie growled again, and Celeste tried another pokeball. This time, after three furious wiggles, it stilled with capture. Friggin' finally.

"About time," the troll said suddenly, having been quiet nearly this entire time. It wouldn't have surprised her at all if Celeste had forgotten she was there.

For right this second, the air was frigid and quiet, both from wild pokemon and from the sound of Celeste's itemfinder.

Celeste started when Raggy spoke, less due to forgetting she was there and more the whole thing that had just transpired made her jumpy. She inhaled and exhaled slowly as the pokeball vanished, then found herself looking at the very not-amused face of her misdreavus, whose spectral form shivered as she gave Celeste a look between expectant and miserable. She recalled Maddie at the clear silent request, then Sting, leaving Shilo to walk over, looking somewhat curious but not voicing her question.

"Akuze," Celeste said quietly, more to herself than anyone, glancing away from her sneasel's gaze and looking up at the monument. She stared at the metal corpse, almost as if trying to commit it to memory. "I think I'm going to name it Akuze."

Shilo's feather-ear twitched and she looked at the woman for a second before asking, "What does it mean?"

Celeste tore her eyes away from the war machine. "It...doesn't mean anything," she admitted with something of an odd look on her face. "Not really." She pulled her pack a little higher on her shoulders and turned away from the monument. She wanted to put as much distance between her and it as possible, and preferably never return. It and what it represented trapped more than Akuze.

Shaking her head a little in an attempt to fully clear it, and not wanting to ignore her traveling companion, Celeste looked at Raggy after a few steps. "You...were saying something about 'titles' earlier?"

Raggy seemed just fine with letting Celeste clear her head, and regarded the monument next to them with quiet curiosity. The corner of her black lips twitched a little, almost like she was trying not to smile as she listened to them, and they continued walking. The path around the monument was easy enough, staying at the edge of the frozen valley until they could see the ocean frozen in time ahead of them.

"In the game, every player has a title. The Whatever of Whatever. The first part is what kind of hero, the second is what you're a hero of. I am the Thief of Time," she stopped. On the tip of her tongue was the phrase 'it's not as bad as it sounds' but she had to be culturally sensitive. It prolly was as bad as it sounded, to a human, "As another example, my ma...fr-... rrrghfffriend is the Knight of Space," she finally managed. It didn't seem like she had a hard time pronouncing the word friend, just that she wasn't used to saying it. Weird. She sighed faintly before continuing, "It is the role that we play. A Hero of Space has powers to see within their entire realm. I'm sure there are other things. Heroes of Time can... well," she laughed.

The landscape waved and crested around and above them, motionless and looking like they were made of crystal. "Some of the humans you've told me about seem like they could have titles, though that might just be me getting bored and seeing things that don't exist," she chuckled, and shortly after, Celeste's Itemfinder started going off. It lead them to a crest of a wave, where a black and red and gold pokeball was frozen in the middle of it. Raggy looked at it, but seemed to become distracted by something, and rubbed on the pane of ice to smooth it out like glass.

Celeste found a Luxury ball frozen in a wave crest. Irony.

Celeste blinked a little at the word 'game.' Then again, she had used the term 'final boss' before. The way Raggy stopped piqued her curiosity slightly, and her struggle with the word 'friend' really did. Of course, being at a disadvantage regarding information at this moment, she didn't know which humans she had told Raggy about in the future. However, the word 'thief' sent her thoughts to a single person. The beeping of her Itemfinder broke her train her thought before she could consider asking and as she approached the dunes, she saw the luxury ball sitting in the ice.

Luxury ball after catching two angry pokemon who were probably going to try to gut her. She almost laughed.

However, the way Raggy was rubbing at the ice made her stop from asking Shilo to start digging into the frozen wave. "What is it?" she asked softly. The last time she'd acted oddly from Celeste's point of view, a snowflake of death had flown at them and started shooting Solarbeams, so Celeste was going to make a point of paying attention to her traveling companion's actions.

The troll didn't seem to be doing anything more then making the ice smooth as a mirror, and then leaning from side to side, squinting at it. "Hm? Oh," she laughed, "Nothing, really. I just noticed... when a troll reaches maturity, one of the last changes is that our irises fill in with our blood color. I was just noticing that was happening to me. Not that it's too noticeable... orange blood and everything," she waved at her face, orange scalera's and all. Realizing the lack of activity, she looked at the ball in the ice, and suddenly realized her mistake.

"There's nothing wrong," she chuckled, "I didn't mean to startle you. I just don't look in mirrors much," she smiled wanly, "So I hadn't noticed it before now."

Celeste was free to extract the ball without anything catastrophic happening. The noise, either of the digging or the talking, attracted a curious little pokemon. A buizel was attempting to be stealthy and see what they were up to, but it was really hard to hide behind frozen chunks of ice that were partially transparent. Let's say that it's a level 31 female.

Oh. Okay. That made sense. Irises changing to match blood was a bit of disturbing concept from Celeste's perspective, but she wasn't about to say that. After all, for all she knew, there were a ton of things about humans that creeped Raggy out. She just gave a small laugh at the assurance that nothing was wrong. "It's okay. I'm just easy to startle." As if that hadn't been made painfully obvious by now.

Shilo extended her claws and headed for the wave, her paws a blur as she slashed at the ice. Celeste sidestepped a little out of the way of the flying ice shavings, and she looked at Raggy, debating asking the question foremost in her mind in response to the small lesson in troll biology. It was the kind of potentionally-awkward question she tended to avoid, but Raggy had already volunteered the information about her eyes, so maybe she was okay talking about this stuff?

"Um...sorry if this a...kind of weird thing to answer but, uh...Do you mean trolls have more than one blood colour?" Not that she really wanted to wrap her head around what would be in their blood to make that possible, really. To be fair, humans did have different blood types...though they were all still red.

Shilo, meanwhile, dug her way into the ice and extracted the luxury ball, clasping it in her claws. However, her feather ear shot straight up when she noticed something orange out of the corner of her eye. Turning around quickly, the sneasel locked her eyes directly on the buizel attempting to hide from them, momentarily tense. However, assuming she wasn't instantly blasted with an attack, she relaxed quickly and inclined her head slightly in a silent greeting to the strange pokemon.

The question made her chuckle again, "I'm used to answering all kinds of questions from humans, so I don't mind. You don't seem like the type to be more invasive then she was, at any rate," she reached into her cloak, withdrawing a thin dagger, with jagged curled horns for a handguard. She carefully and precisely, unaware of any protest Celeste might be ready to give once she realized what was going on, made a small cut on the palm of her hand, and held it out for Celeste to see. Yup, that was orange!

"They can range from the rust bloods like myself, red and orange, to the royal sea trolls, with their purples. Mine's not... you know, good. Or interesting..." she trailed off oddly for a second, looking up when she heard Shilo stop hacking, "But, yes. Many different colors."

The buizel squeaked when Shilo looked at her, and plastered her paws over her eyes, chittering softly. If she can't see them, they can't see her? Maybe. She slooowly lifted one paw to see if Shilo was still looking at her, and if she wasn't, then she'd try to sneak closer. And if she was... she'd put her paw back over her eyes. Silly sea weasel.

Celeste decided not to question who 'she' might be, though she did give something of a relieved chuckle at the fact that Raggy was used to questions. She still didn't really like prying about things, but it was good to know--whoa wait dagger! The faint wondering of how many things she actually kept in that cloak was replaced by a protest on her tongue that wasn't fast enough getting out her mouth. Celeste only briefly caught sight of the bit of orange blood on Raggy's palm before her eyes rapidly went skyward. They flicked back down at the continued explanation, but she made a point of not looking in the direction of the cut hand. Maybe she was being silly, but something about blood, especially someone else's, outside of the heat of battle just made her sick; the fact that it wasn't the colour of human blood didn't really seem to affect her reaction.

Shilo blinked at the buizel covering her eyes, just looking all the more confused when she lifted her paw slowly and put it back down. The sneasel stared for a few more moments, before she spoke calmly, her voice slipping easily into her native tongue. "There is no need to be afraid, honourable stranger. We harm none who do not harm us first." If the orange otter uncovered her eyes again, Shilo would bow (slightly imperfectly since holding the luxury ball made it impossible for her to put her paws together exactly like she would normally), and her mouth would twitch into something approaching a proper smile.

Celeste looked over at Shilo at the sound of her speaking, curious, and caught sight of buizel. Oh, how cute! She didn't say anything to the wild pokemon, letting Shilo do the talking for the moment, but she wore a gentle smile on her face and found herself slipping off her bag. She figured it was a safe bet the little creature was hungry, so she may as well be ready just in case this bit of wildlife was willing to let itself be fed.

Three...

Two...

One...

DING. Mistake realized! The troll's expression changing to said realization was pretty funny, though.

"Oh gog I'm sorry, blood freaks you out doesn't it?" and she quickly spun around, grumbling and hissing to herself about being 'culturally sensitive'. She turned back around, a small bandage on her hand, "I didn't even think about that. The few humans I know aren't freaked out by blood at all. Though... I've heard that some humans faint at the sight of it," she fidgeted nervously at the thought.

This time, the buizel slowly lifted both paws from her eyes and peered at Shilo, still unsure. Her natural curiosity got the better of her, and she slid on her belly across the ice and over to them, skidding to a stop in front of Shilo, "Hi!"

Raggy looked too, eyes widening slightly, "Oh, it's a little aquatic weasel-beast. It's cute!" she whispered, crouching down and setting her scythe down on the ice; her dagger had disappeared when she turned around. The buizel eyed her warily, almost like she couldn't decide if Raggy was just a weird looking human or one of those weird looking new pokemon.

Despite still feeling a little ill from seeing Raggy cut open her own palm, Celeste gave a smile at the apology. "Well, people who faint are pretty rare. I'm not nearly that bad. No harm done." Except for, you know, the palm-slashing, which, now that she really thought of it, may be the part that freaked her out the most. Even if she ever became okay with blood, Celeste really doubted she'd ever intentionally make herself bleed.

Shilo kept up the little smile at the buizel's approach, and nodded a little at the greeting. "Hello," she replied calmly, "I am Shilo." Noting the wary look, she added, "That is Celeste and Raggy." She flicked her paw briefly in the direction of each as she spoke their names to be sure they weren't mixed up. "They're friendly."

Celeste chuckled a little. "Buizel," she said in similar whisper without thinking, then mentally hit herself when she realized that she'd just assumed that Raggy didn't know the pokemon's name; the woman riding an altaria and who fought on the Pro's side of the Little Cup should not be questioned on her knowledge. "Yeah, she's a cutie," she added a little quicker than she normally would in some attempt to cover it up, crouching down as well and sliding her pack off fully. It was also cute seeing Shilo interacting with the little thing, but she wouldn't dare say that.

The sea weasel looked from Celeste to Raggy, and repeated the motion. Despite the fact that neither of the humanoids could understand her, she still said in a whisper, "Is that one a new pokemon?"

Raggy sneezed twice, "Ow," she rubbed her face and sniffed, "Buizel," she repeated, which may or may not tell Celeste anything about her knowledge. Whatever it matters, really. She watched the weasel curiously, apparently used to the wary, 'wtf' looks that she got from practically everything ever.

The buizel, still on her belly, pushed herself over to Celeste and Raggy, hopping up onto her hind legs and sniffing at them curiously. She gave a cheerful "Bui!" and waved at them.

Raggy seemed to be debating something quietly, rubbing one of the ridges of her horn as she watched the little pokemon walk over to Celeste to sniff her bag. Human bags = food = good. Like there was some kind of universal constant of 'if it doesn't attack me, maybe it'll feed me'.

Shilo's feather-ear twitched at the question, and she glanced Raggy's way briefly before replying, "No, she is not. She is something similar to a human, from what I understand." She trained pokemon, at any rate, which was generally a human's profession, and she had the skill of human speech without appearing to understand pokemon. As the wild pokemon went over to socialize with the pair, Shilo remained, looking almost curious.

Celeste giggled a little at the wave and the sudden interest in her bag. "Well hey there. Hungry, huh?" She opened her pack and quickly found the cookies again. "Here," she said, offering one of the berry-filled treats. She'd never been all that interested in training a buizel, but that didn't mean she couldn't be nice to little sweetie, right?

The thought of catching pokemon, however, did remind her of something that was supposed to out here that interested her. Yamask, one of the new pokemon. She had an odd fondness for ghosts (blame sharing her living space with a haunter), but it was more than that. There was probably a...reason a pokemon that was supposed to be the soul of a dead human had a population out here. Akuze wasn't the only pokemon she wanted to save from this place and its memories.

Cocking her head at the little pokemon, she found herself asking, "Hey, buziel, do you think you could tell me if you've seen this one pokemon around? It's a little ghost that carries around a mask. I've heard that they're sad all the time and, well, I thought if I found one I could help it somehow." That was the short version, anyway. No need to go into extensive details regarding war when talking to a cute little orange otter, or say that the reason they were sad was because they were mourning their past lives. Nope. No need to go there.

"She's still weird looking," she whispered again, slapping her tails on the ice. She didn't seem to mean anything by it, just stating the extremely obvious.

She chittered her teeth and smiled, throwing her hands up when Celeste produced a cookie for her. Carefully, she took it, sniffed it, and then plopped down to lay on her back and eat it. Celeste is like the pokemon whisperer or something, man. I don't even know. Raggy crouched down near her, and the water type spun around with her tail to take a closer look at her horns. What a nice shade of orange they were.

Buizel spun back around to look up at Celeste, and paused in enjoying her cookie. She tapped the rest of it against her nose in thought, and didn't notice Raggy look up at Celeste curiously, "Really?"

"Buibui!" she bobbed her head quickly and slid around to stand up, holding the rest of the cookie in one paw. She waddled a little distance away, heading north-east-ish, and stopped to look back at them. North East Ish is... kind of back towards the fortress, for convenient reference. Raggy seemed to realize this, looking in that direction, and then at the human. Welp.

She'd been thinking it through the whole encounter, but it deserved repeating: the buizel was so incredibly cute!

Celeste met Raggy's curious look, and she bit her lip a little before answering, "Well, I think they're capable of being happy. They just...don't like being ghosts, or at least that's what the stories say. It's hard to explain." Or maybe she just didn't want to explain, to more than just the water type. There was something about everything she'd read about yamask that struck her right in the heart; she had to help at least one of them.

When the buizel pointed back toward the fortress, Celeste didn't react right away, staring in that direction as if she could pierce through the mist. There certainly hadn't been any sign of one before, but Akuze had been tearing things apart before, and any of the yamask would know better than to stick around when the living weapon was in 'kill everything' mode, due to its actions around outsiders if not their own memories. "Figures," she mumbled, before looking to the helpful pokemon with a smile, "Thanks."

So close to leaving the frozen wasteland behind for the beaches of Brightopolis, and now she was being pulled right back in. She looked at Raggy for a moment. "I...don't mind backtracking if you don't," she said quietly. It was a flat-out lie. Celeste wanted to take off over the dunes and be rid of this place. Part of her was practically begging for Raggy to give her a reason not to go, while another was determined to convince her why they should go if need be.

"No, no, I meant... why do you want one?" the troll asked, tilting her head. Did Not Compute in her mind.

The buizel chattered a merry 'thank you', but didn't skedaddle yet. In fact, she continued waiting, and went back to her cookie while Celeste was having her moment. Looked like the little thing was going to follow them. Or it was going to continue leading them.

The troll rubbed one of the ridges on her horn, thinking, "I don't mind the backtracking part, no. Are you ok with going there, though? You seemed eager to get away from it before," she pointed out. She tapped the end of her scythe on the frozen ground, "I'll make sure nothing hurts you, if that's what you're nervous about."

Celeste blinked a bit and looked at Raggy oddly. She was not making much in the way of sense right at that moment, but Celeste was pretty sure that the feeling was mutual, so she inhaled deeply, ignoring the sting of the cold air in her lungs, and decided to answer the second question first. "That's not it. I'm not afraid of anything out here." Barring something particularly massive and vicious; the Legendary that actually froze the valley sprang to mind, but it was supposedly back home. "That...thing just brings back memories I'd rather forget."

As for why she wanted the yamask, Celeste pulled her pack back on as she added, "But like I said, I thought I could maybe...help one of them if I found one. Or at least try to." She sighed a little. "Getting them out of here can only do good." This place was painful enough for her, and she'd survived the battle. To the dead, it must be unbearable. The idea that Raggy may be asking why she was so eager to help never once crossed her mind.

Shilo had been watching the interactions, and she chose that moment to make her way to Celeste's side. Something in her red eyes softened slightly, and the blunt side of her claws on one hand brushed against her pant leg briefly in a way that it could have been explained away as an accident. Celeste glanced her way for a moment, just moving her eyes, and her lips twitched slightly in an attempt at a smile.

The moment it seemed like everyone was ready, Celeste would start walking, before she could give herself the chance to lose her nerve. Her and Raggy could walk and talk if there was more confusion.

The troll considered what Celeste said first. Either she understood to some extent or she just didn't feel like asking, because she didn't say anything. As for the yamask, she nodded with something like understanding.

The buizel was still waiting, having finished her cookie, and her head was practically perpendicular to the ground, it was tilted so far to the side. She slapped her tails on the ground merrily and dropped back onto her belly to slide on the slick ice. Raggy's talons clicked on the ice as she padded along behind the human.

"If it's not fear, then what about it bothers you?" she asked suddenly, and the fortress chose that moment to loom out of the fog.

Or, at least it was part of the fortress. The back corner of it, tail half rotted away and sticking up in the air since the fortress's front corner had been crumbled. The buizel stopped here and waved for them to wait before breaking a hole in the ice and squeezing under the fortress. It was way too small for either of the humanoids to squeeze through, and Shilo could barely go if she wanted to make the hole a little bigger with her claws... but something went SPLASH down in there so there must have been water where the buizel was going. Whiiich... who knows if sneasel can swim.

If it's not fear, then what about it bothers you?

Celeste started at the question, an action that her current environment turned into a momentary scramble to stay upright. It wasn't at its suddenness, but its content. What kind of question was that? Celeste stared at Raggy in bewilderment. She knew it was rude, but what part of 'bad memories' did she not understand? Then she remembered that the troll had cut her own palm open earlier and had only realized that it may not be a good idea because of something she heard about humans. Which she remembered only after Celeste reacted with aversion to the blood. The reminder that Raggy wasn't just a human with a strange appearance made her stop staring and glance away, collecting her thoughts.

"I..." she started quietly, only to trail off as the monument loomed in the distance. Nope, needed more collecting. Fear did play into why her memories were so bad, as reliving the terror of marching to war was unpleasant, but there was more to it than that. This time, as they approached, the ghosts of the past didn't consume her, which almost seemed a curse rather than a blessing, because of the different emotions that rose and mixed together.

Anger at the woman who started all of this. Grief for the ones on both sides who had fallen in a useless war.

Guilt.

That was the core of it, wasn't it? So many had fallen, left to wander this icy wasteland, trapped by memories of a past they could never escape or reclaim, while she was given a medal and hailed as a hero. What made her so special? Suddenly coming here almost seemed like an insult to the restless dead...but she had to try to help. She just...had to.

As the buizel vanished, she managed a smile, just barely, not wanting to let on the extent of her pain to the cute little creature. Shilo stood at the hole, considering following. She could sort of swim. Well, it was more of a doggy paddle. Still, she had lived near a beach, and it wasn't like the cold temperature of the water was going to bother her. It was mix of her fatigue and a bit of worry for Celeste that instead kept her on the surface, albeit pacing uneasily by the break in the ice.

Finally, Celeste exhaled slowly and inhaled, deciding that she should at least try to speak. This was so strange. She knew that Raggy knew her better than she knew Raggy, by virtue of time traveling. Confiding some amount of her pain may be easier if they'd met with each other in a proper chronological order. Still, if Raggy was asking this now, she obviously hadn't talked about it then...which was probably a sign that she shouldn't talk about it at all. Unless she hadn't talked about it then because she'd already talked about it now...

The resulting headache was a welcome distraction, but it didn't last long. Celeste's eyes ran over the decaying tail of the former war machine, and anger won out for the briefest moment. "One person's vanity...made this monster..." she hissed quietly. Xilas had left the encounter alive as well, and Celeste was sure she had no regret for the pawns she'd left to die for her selfish purposes. The battle that had taken place here was replaced in her mind by the massacre that was the Battle of Brightopolis, where the war machine had first shown its might; they'd called the survivors of that battle heroes as well.

The image of Colonel Nicotine bleeding out in the transport flashed through her mind's eye, and before Celeste realized what she was doing, her whip struck the metal monstrosity, the sound ringing in the silence. Shilo's feather-ear sat bolt upright and she snapped her head around to look at Celeste. The weapon hadn't been activated, and it was doubtful it would have done anything even if it was, but the sound seemed to snap its wielder out of her moment of rage, and she shook her head a little and looked at the electrowhip before retracting it.

"There was a lot of blood," said, actually addressing Raggy this time, falling back on what she knew the troll at least semi-understood, "I didn't get hurt, but it doesn't have to be my blood for me to not want to remember what this thing did before it was left here."

Raggy's ears visibly wilted when she realized she'd upset Celeste, and she was debating between telling the girl nevermind when she had to bite her tongue. Instead she was just completely patient, looking at her feet and scratching at the ice with her claws. Stupid, stupid, dumb, not all humans were like her human. Her human of steel that nothing got to her. Dumb dumb dumb rustblood troll.

Her eyes snapped up at the sound of the whip, and she watched the spot for a moment before looking at Celeste again. She nodded a little.

"Sorry," she said once Celeste was done, "The human I would always ask questions to... nothing got to her. She's the only human I'm really familiar with. Trolls aren't really bothered by much... or at least I'm not," she rubbed at her neck and looked away, up at the tail of the fortress. It might bring Celeste's attention to the two scars arcing across her throat, "I've done lots of things I think most humans would be uncomfortable with. But I think I understand what you mean."

The buizel reappeared then, soaking wet, carrying something in her mouth. She pranced over to Celeste and proudly presented her with the treasure; a yamask... mask. It had a ghostly aura radiating from it, and felt unnaturally cold. The buizel went about picking icicles off of her body as the water froze, and didn't offer any other explanation.

Welp.

Celeste sighed at the apology, and tried and failed to smile. "I...It's okay. Really," she said, probably trying to convince herself more than Raggy. She didn't really see the scars, though the sneasel who had quietly made her way to the woman's side did. Celeste was too focused on the words and trying to not think about her recent episode. Her fits of rage were rare, ones where she physically lashed out even rarer, but she always scared herself when they cropped up. "You couldn't have known. I know people who...it doesn't get to them either."

Two in particular came to mind. Steely and Cerb seemed like they were made of iron, at least to the redhead who had fought next to each of them at different times in the war, but they were human and thus knew that Celeste wasn't like them. Using them as a standard to compare herself to was a poor idea, and she knew it, but what other human friends did she even really have these days? She twirled her retracted electrowhip in her hand, what was left of her anger swirling together with the lingering grief and guilt. "And maybe I'm better off talking about it," came the quiet admission.

The buizel emerged at that moment, holding something that made Celeste's heart feel like something grabbed it with icy fingers. A chill that had nothing to do with the environment rushed through her. That...no...that couldn't...Celeste stared, unable to move, and so Shilo took the 'treasure' in her claws, her ears pinning back in disgust at the ghostly aura. It felt worse than the Spooky Plate, though maybe that was because she was actually touching it.

"It...threw away its own mask...?" Celeste nearly choked as she said it. Or that's all that's left... The concept of one of these strange ghost types attempting to end its unlife hadn't occurred to her before now. Even with all the nightmares, all the guilt, that was the step her psyche never took. Something she couldn't even begin to understand or contemplate. The idea that it had disposed of its connection to its past life was frightening in its own right, if only because she hadn't known they could do that. It'd be like Maddie throwing away her necklace; it was part of them.

"Give it to me." The words had the tone of a plea rather than a command, and Shilo gladly handed it over, before making her way to the buizel. The unnatural chill pierced through Celeste's gloves easily, causing a shiver to race through her. Her eyes scanned every detail of mask. She doubted it was anyone she would recognize. She hadn't known anyone in the battle who hadn't gotten out alive. But she still felt like she had to know the face of whoever this had been.

Shilo, meanwhile, watched the orange otter busy herself with grooming for a moment before she spoke. "Do you know how that mask found itself there?" 'There' was a sketchy idea of its location at best, but she assumed it was under the ice, or perhaps within the fortress. Either way, a strange place to find a mask that should not be apart from its owner and still radiated power. Celeste's assumption wasn't the only possibility, after all. It could just have been lost somehow.

The troll was a second away from asking Celeste if it was really a good idea to take the mask, but the thought lingered long enough that she didn't say anything in time. Instead, she leaned over to look too. She wouldn't be any help in this, but death was interesting to her. Not that Celeste knew this.

The mask itself wouldn't be anyone Celeste would recognize at all. She might not be able to tell, but it had been a Jgsei warrior at one time. Raggy frowned at it, and quietly reached out to touch it with a finger. She didn't shiver or even seem uncomfortable, as she said: "Celeste, it didn't throw away its mask. It's in the mask."

Buizel didn't pause in her grooming aside from flicking an ear at Shilo, "Hold on, sorry, this is so hard to get off if it gets too frozen," she finished up by shaking off, and seemed pretty ice-free when she turned to the catweasel, "It was under the fortress. I think it got crushed when the big thing collapsed back in the battle. It's weird; the other ones that were there all left by phasing up into the fortress, but that one lingered. Dunno why it stayed stuck there, but I was able to dig it out."

Celeste did know what a Jgsei warrior looked like, even though she'd ever really seen them in battle either in armor or at a distance or both. Let's face it: Everyone knew what a Jgsei warrior looked like. Just being over a certain height could get you dirty looks in certain places, let alone if you matched the rest of the description. Unfortunately, Celeste wasn't someone who could make the distinction on facial features alone, though she did note the overall strength of them.

Celeste, to her credit, did not drop the mask upon Raggy's statement, though there was distinct tensing in her arms and shoulders. As oddly comfortable as she could be with ghost pokemon despite her issues with death, most people did not like being told that there was a ghost in what they were holding. When the yamask didn't jump out and try to eat her upon this revelation, Celeste relaxed a little and stared right at the eyes of the mask, despite the fact that her hands were beginning to feel numb. "By choice?" she asked quietly. The question wasn't aimed at Raggy, but at the golden mask itself.

Shilo processed this information, not showing much in the way of emotion at the idea of the fortress crushing people. Of the differences between her and Celeste's thought processes, there was one very important one: Shilo was far more capable of considering someone worthy of death. And anyone who was directly under the fortress was not likely to have been on their side of the battle. "Perhaps it is ashamed," Shilo said darkly. In her mind, it should be. Her expression then softened as she bowed respectfully to the buizel. "Regardless, you have our deepest thanks for your help, honourable stranger."

Celeste's eyes drifted to her pokeballs, and after a moment she plucked one. With a flash of light, Madison appeared for a second time in the misty cold. The misdreavus narrowed her eyes and made a sound by clattering the red gems of her 'necklace' together that, disturbingly enough, sounded a little like rattling bones. It was essentially her equivalent to hissing, and the spoiled princess of a ghost was clearly not happy about having her delightful beauty nap disturbed by anything other than being presented with a Dusk Stone; the only reason she tolerated this not-as-pretty-as-her human was the promise of evolution and becoming more beautiful.

"Maddie," Celeste said gently, holding the mask up slightly. It being somewhat shiny and reflective managed to catch the little narcissist's attention enough for her to drift closer. "There's a ghost hiding in here. Do you think you could maybe coax him out?" Maddie stopped floating closer and gave her trainer a deadpan look, then sighed and nodded.

Now, when Celeste said coax, she really did mean coax. Something gentle. Madison, on the other hand, had realized that the quickest way to get back in her ball and stay there until it was time to become a mismagius was to get this thing out of the mask. So, the misdreavus floated over and made her best attempt to extend some tendrils of energy and find something to nothing sort of yank out of the mask. "Getouttathere!"

Buizel chattered some kind of wordless 'you're welcome' to Shilo, but at this point she was watching what the humans were doing. Human and troll, whatever. She had a bad feeling about it, either way.

The universise was not prepared for Maddie, but then again how could anyone be prepared for her? They really couldn't.

The buizel did flatten her ears, and Raggy took a step away right before Maddie Happened, though. Good thing, too, because the mask just about exploded. Or at least the yamask came out and smacked the other ghost in the face with a ball of shadow.

So now there was an angry ghost mask floating there, clearly not pleased about being yanked out of its hiding spot. Buizel covered her face with her paws and Raggy watched with a hand in her pocket, like she was prepared for the ghost to do something stupid. Woo boy. Now what?

No one's ever prepared for Maddie. But Maddie wasn't prepared for a Shadow Ball to the face. The misdreavus tumbled through the air, and when she righted herself she nothing short of screamed in fury; that insolent little nobody ruined her flawless grooming! Celeste, who of course had been holding the mask and now was far too close, scrambled back. "I said coax," she hissed, but her own ghost was beyond paying attention to her.

Before Madison could unleash her righteous wrath, Celeste recalled her and very carefully stood in front of the yamask, hands up in a passive gesture. It was only now that the fact that this ghost may have been her enemy in life occurred to her, and she knew she didn't speak Jgsei. Still, most of the warriors knew at least some of her language. "Yamask. Desumasu." Yes, Celeste knew the Jgsei name for the pokemon; her research material happened to include such information and some of the names had stuck in her mind. "We want to talk. Not fight. Please. "

Shilo was less than convinced that this tactic would work. Shadows rose up around the sneasel and consumed her as she slipped onto another plane. She wasn't going to hesitate to tear into the ghost if he dared to harm Celeste.

Well, Celeste could say that she tried at least.

The yamask, to its credit, didn't attack Celeste first. Either it had some vague sense of honor, or considered Shilo more of a threat, but the yamask hovered for a second before striking. It hurled another shadow ball at a nearby shadow in the ice, knocking the catweasel out of it.

He turned to float away, back under the machine, but the buizel suddenly tackled it and pinned it down in pursuit. She sniffed and crossed her arms, chatting something obscene down at the squirming mask.

By now, Raggy had pulled out a pokeball, but hadn't let the monster out yet. She looked like she wasn't quite sure what to do. The buizel looked like she had it handled, and Celeste had said they just wanted to talk. It wasn't surprising that most of the things in this area were completely hostile, though. She hummed and tapped her claws on her scythe and kept any thoughts to herself for now. Celeste could handle this, however she was going to.

Celeste was at Shilo's side in a instant, nearly entirely forgetting about the yamask. The sneasel hissed and shook her head. She hadn't known that someone could actually do that. Then again, when had she ever given someone the chance to try? However, that blow had exhausted what remained of the young dark type's patience, and she got up, locking her eyes on the struggling ghost. "Is this what you plan to do? Hide beneath the crushing weight of your dead fortress and strike out at any who try to pull you into the light?" she hissed in her native tongue; though it was unknown what the creature's knowledge of human languages was, pokemon language surely was ingrained with the change to its current form.

Shilo's voice was harsh and she spoke with teeth bared and claws extended; she increased in volume and pitch with nearly every word. Celeste could only watch, having no idea what she was saying but somewhere between sensing she shouldn't interrupt and just plain being dumbfounded. "Do you hide in your mask so you no longer have to look at your own face? The face of a warrior? Are you ashamed of your death, or your new form? You are a fool! You throw away a second life when many only have one!"

As Shilo seemed to get her outburst under control, she looked to Celeste and hissed icily, "You spend your energy trying to help someone who clearly doesn't wish to be helped."

"It's a habit." That simple reply made Shilo's feather-ear prick, and she met her human companion's steady gaze for a long moment, after which she silently looked away to instead focus on whether her words had so much as registered to the ghost.

The buizel crossed her arms and nodded along with Shilo's ranting, while the mask just became extremely still. When she was finished, and Celeste said her little bit, the weasel hopped off to let the thing up. Even the troll chuckled a little in the background.

The ghost floated up and just hovered, arms dropped to its sides in surrender. It continued to do nothing. He would continue that up until he was attacked again or had a pokeball thrown at him. If, you know, Celeste actually did such a thing, it wouldn't even wiggle; just ding immediately. Defeated, but unhappy. Nine points of unhappy.

No matter what happened, the buizel sighed and picked ice off of her claws, while the troll was looking thoughtully and quietly at the fortress.

Celeste watched the ghost for a moment, and her heart broke. She left Shilo's side, standing up and walking toward him. Her eyes were right on his, his true eyes rather than the mask's, and she stopped right in front of him. Celeste carefully reached out her hand, letting her fingers trail through the yamask's incorporeal arm in an attempt at some sort of comforting gesture. "I...can't give you back what you had," she said quietly, still not sure how much he understood, "But I'll show you everything this region has to offer. I promise. Please just...give me a chance...Desumasu."

She didn't throw the pokeball, but instead tapped it gently on the forehead of the golden mask. The orb absorbed him and vanished, and Celeste closed her eyes, letting out a shaky breath. She just wanted to get out of this Arceus-damned place...

CRACK!

But that would have to wait, because Baby Pokemon Number Two had decided at that moment that it was time to be born. Celeste let out a small 'eep' noise and had a repeat of the episode with Duchess, scrambling to prepare. There was a sound a little like a tiny jackhammer inside of the shell, right before a set of buck teeth punctured it and cracks spread rapidly from the hole. The teeth withdrew, then punctured another spot, again and again, until, with a small, muffled squeak that almost sounded like a 'hiya', the side of the egg seemed to explode and shower Celeste's face and torso with tiny bits of shell.

What emerged was a small pachirisu, who twitched her tail and sneezed a couple of times as Celeste toweled her off. However, she clearly wouldn't have any of that 'cuddle in mommy's lap' stuff, and quickly hop-scrambled onto the redhead's shoulder, strangely unfazed by the intense cold. The little squirrel looked up at the fortress. To those who knew what it was, it represented the horror of war and the ones who died there...

...But to the baby pachirisu, it was merely a thing to climb. An awesome thing to climb. Before Celeste could make a move to return the squirrel to her lap, she was already a blur of white and blue headed straight for the dead machine.

A twin blur of black cut her off, however, resulting in Shilo carefully holding a squirming infant who was squeaking and chattering indignantly as the dark weasel carried her back over to Celeste. The sneasel herself had a complete lack of expression and never lost her grip for an instant. She held out the infant wordlessly, who the human took with a grateful nod.

However, the squirrel would again have nothing of that and hopped up on Celeste's shoulder a second time, this time to stay. She wrapped her tail around herself and snuggled against Celeste's face and neck, presumably for warmth. "Sure you're okay up there?" Celeste asked, and the response was a stubborn nod and meaningless chatter. She reached up to scratch under the squirrel's chin. "Adventurous little thing, aren't ya?"

It wasn't the most ideal place for a baby squirrel to be born, but hey. She seemed happy, which was the important thing.

The buizel brightened up at the sight of the baby, and hopped around Celeste to try and get a better look. She got scooped out of the air after a few hops, and deposited on the troll's shoulder. Up until two seconds ago, Raggy had been looking at the fortress with intensity. Now she patted the sea weasel on the head, "If you really want a good look, sit up there."

But, buizel scaled Raggy's horn and sat down between then, looking highly pleased with herself. And look, she could hold on and not fall off! Brilliant! The horned human-thing was pretty rad in her book.

"Ready to get away from this now?" she tapped her scythe against the metal side of the behemoth. The mist was still thick and it was still cold. Bluh.

The little pachirisu peered at the head-sitting buizel, and the owner of the head she was sitting on, with curiosity. She looked between Raggy and her own 'mommy' a few times as she silently wondered why Celeste didn't have horns too. Ah, well. It was easier to cuddle up to her neck without something like that in the way, anyway, and the squirrel did so contentedly. She was a warm mommy.

Celeste's eyes flicked upward when Raggy tapped the fortress. The joy of the newborn's arrival had effectively made her forget where she was...and what had just happened a moment before the hatching started.

Desumasu. Yamask. An unliving remnant of a short but bloody war, which it now seemed he was on the other side of in life. Rather than fleeing, he had withdrawn into himself and refused to leave the dead war machine. Whatever Shilo had yelled at him had lead to submission, but it wasn't submission that Celeste wanted. She didn't want to simply be another set of chains; hopefully, taking him away from here would help him eventually be free.

"I'll be happy if I never see it again," she answered, though she didn't actually look away until a few moments after she spoke. Celeste turned her back on the monster, and started to walk. She knew she would see it, though. The war machine lurked in her dreams, whole and still capable of slaughtering all who stood in its path.

Celeste gently scratched her new squirrel under the chin again. "I think I'll call you Doreen." The baby pachirisu flicked an ear, but was far more interested in finding out what a strand of Celeste's hair tasted like.

Raggy hung back for a few seconds, letting Celeste walk away a bit. She was peering up above the fortress, where it was too misty to see anything clearly. Only when the buizel leaned over to chatter in her face did she snap out of it.

"Bui?"

"Hm?"

"Bui bui."

"Oh. Um,"
she looked at the fortress again, listening. She could have sworn she heard something... wings?

"Nothing," she turned and hurried after Celeste, missing the giant black bird shadow that loomed for a moment before disappearing. Luckily, it wasn't something Celeste was going to have to worry about. Just a little foreshadowing. 'cuz I clearly can't help myself.

Anywho. The troll padded up next to Celeste, and they were back in the dunes again, already moving through it. The troll was watching the critter sitting on her head, looking thoughtful. She glanced at Celeste, then at the buizel, then back at Celeste. "You're... not looking for a buizel, are you?" she leaned over to whisper as quietly as she could... but the sea weasel was still sitting right there. So she heard and leaned over to stare at the both of them.

Oh and then Celeste's itemfinder started beeping. But when they reached the point that it indicated... they couldn't see anything. What do?

Celeste glanced over at Raggy at her question, and shrugged a little. "Not really," she answered in a similarly low tone, despite the fact that she knew the pokemon could hear them. Doreen blinked and made a small, confused chatter. "I like buizel. Water types in general, really. But I wasn't really on the hunt for one." Now, if she were to be completely honest, if the otter asked, Celeste would gladly bring her to the ranch. However, she was fairly certain that she knew why Raggy asked, and the buizel seemed to like the troll woman more anyway.

As for the itemfinder, Celeste lightly ran her boot over the ice where it indicated. Shilo looked at the ice for a moment, thinking. All the other times they'd found something, with the exception of the plate, it had been under ice. Now, Shilo was a sneasel, and thus not versed in the science of how light moving through ice worked, but she did have the vague idea that if it was down deep, it may not be visible.

And so, the weasel pokemon started digging through the ice, sending shavings flying; she figured that the worst that could happen was that she hit water.

The troll looked up at the buizel, who peered back down at her. The troll shifted uncomfortably, nervously running a hand over her horn. The buizel patiently waited for her to finally gather her wits and just say something, "So, buizel, I was wondering. I know I'm pretty odd and not a normal trainer, but would you like to come with me? Not sure what I can do to convince you... but my pokemon are pretty happy, so that counts for something, right? And I don't think I have a water type yet..."

"Bui," she said simply, patting Raggy on the hand. Yes, silly pokemon-human-thing, I'll make sure I keep you out of trouble.

Buizel get! Not for Celeste, but hey! Though she could still get something, since Shilo was digging at the ice. She pulled out a little gold crystal, filled with power. Well, that was kind of useful. Hooray revives.

Didn't look like there was anything else around, though. Maybe Celeste would finally get out of here this time, if she wanted to. The land was sloping steadily downwards, and they could hear water sloshing with the ice...

Found a revive!

And if Celeste wants to continue, they'll reach the edge of the crystal dunes, and she can decide what she's doing from there.

Celeste smiled as she watched Raggy and the buizel interact. Somehow, they seemed to just...fit. Raggy got the pokemon she wanted, the buizel got to leave this icy place, and little cutie would be with someone Celeste would see again. Everyone won.

Only...the next time she saw Raggy would be before she caught the buizel, so she wouldn't see the pokemon next time. Though, if she saw Raggy again after the next time, it could be after she went in the past and...here came the headache again. Celeste just really needed to stop thinking about this. Seriously.

Shilo emerged from her hole with the revive, which Celeste pocketed with a word of thanks that Shilo accepted with a nod. The sneasel fell into step again as they kept walking. The sounds of water lapping against the ice grew louder as they navigated their way through the frozen waves that cut through what had once been part of the then-aptly-named Barrier Mountains, until they finally reached the shore.

Celeste smiled at the sight of the ocean; she'd finally be able to leave this old battlefield behind. Yet, despite how hard it was to face that fortress both times, and the dark histories of the pokemon she'd found there...she felt like she'd accomplished something, or at least had taken a step in the right direction. All the same, even without the memories, this place was very unpleasant and she'd be happy to never have to walk through it again; if all went well in the Halcyon Forest, she may well get her wish.

Celeste reached for one of two pokeballs she'd left untouched for the entire journey. Ares the skarmory appeared with a flash of light, and the metal bird clicked his beak at the condensation that rapidly formed on his steel hide from the fog. Ignoring the moisture for the time being, he let out a chicken-like squawk and walked over to investigate this strange horned person and the little orange thingy on her head. "Hi!"

Celeste smiled a little. "Meet Ares," she said, adding a moment later, "If you haven't already." Since she rode on the bird pretty much everywhere, she assumed so. She didn't know yet that she'd have a shiny dragon to fly around on. A brief mischievous look flickered across her features. "My plan was to fly over the coral reef and into the city...Want to race?"

Ares immediately perked up at the word 'race,' crowing and flapping his wings. Races! Awesome! Yes!

.3 :gexp2 you know it's funny, I saw you needed a berry but I still forgot somehow. 3 berries

They reached the edge of the ocean, where the fog was burning off a little, and the sun reflected off of the water and ice. The buizel slid past them and into the ocean, floating on the surface with a sigh. When Celeste turned to look back at the troll... she was still standing a ways back, and had pulled her hood up, and she had pulled out a pair of very dark sunglasses to put on.

"Hello Ares. I've met him before," she patted him on the nose, but her hand didn't emerge from her coat sleeve, "And while I would love to race you... the sun burns my skin and hurts my eyes. I try to avoid direct contact as much as I can," she explained, which might explain part of the reason that she skedaddled so quickly after the tournament before, "Especially around water, since it's reflective. We're actually a nocturnal species, too."

Buizel lifted her head to stare a little. Her human-thing was the weirdest human-thing!

But, the troll smiled either way, "Perhaps next time, if you happen to catch me around the right time. This is actually the last time I'm going to see you for a while, but you'll be seeing me again very soon."

So...

Ares immediately deflated. But...but...but...racing. Celeste frowned briefly, a little upset about having disappointed her pokemon, but she smiled a little when Raggy did, chuckling briefly at her emphasis on the word 'time.' She walked over, a bit out of the sunlight that she'd been craving since she descended into this place, and lightly patted Ares on the side. Doreen immediately hopped down and climbed up on top of the skarmory's head, looking quite pleased with herself, despite the fact that the bird was a little exasperated because why did fuzzy things keep climbing on him?

"Well, until you do see me again, take care of yourself," Celeste said as she pulled herself onto her skarmory's back.

Shilo gave one of her respectful bows. "I will look forward to further meetings, even those that are previous to you, Raggy." The sneasel's feather-ear gave a faint twitch as she spoke the troll's name; she'd have to get her full name from Celeste for when they saw her again. She then hopped up and took a place behind Celeste on Ares.

"Okay, boy, let's get going," Celeste said gently with a pat, and the metal bird spread his wings and took to the air. He immediately swooped over the water, eager to let the sun evaporate the moisture on his body. However, Celeste directed him to briefly hover above where the buizel was floating in the water. She leaned to one side to a degree that was...probably not very safe, given the steel mount and lack of saddle, but she managed to hang on. "Keep her out of trouble, okay?" she whispered to the orange otter, before sitting up properly again and finally letting Ares fly.

Celeste waved right before they shot off like a bullet. Doreen squealed and immediately latched onto her trainer's coat.

I'm certainly not sick of you, but I do have Stuff that I want to get done (want to get Mayriver stuff synced up with timeline so I can use Gemini, among other things) and maybe try some Fudd mods. She'll head out at night soon, though.

"You too," she said quietly, and raised her hand to wave. Buizel grinned widely, and gave Celeste thumbs up with a quick "Bui!"

And Ares has no problems disappearing out over the open ocean, out of sight from the troll and the buizel. Raggy stood there quietly, looking even after Celeste had gone. When she'd finally had her fill of that, she turned around, back in the direction of the fortress, "So, what was it that you didn't want her to know about?"

Pause.

"If you say so," she paused and looked down at the buizel, who had meandered out of the water and was looking at the troll curiously now, "I, um. I hear voices. Of the dark gods. I would say it's not as bad as it sounds, but it can be."

Buizel made a bewildered noise at her.

"Close enough. Well, come on... should jump back to the right place on the timeline I think," she dug around in her pocket, and pulled out a card that turned into two floating tar and stone sundials, "Before I mess anything up."

And then, fzzap, they were gone.

But as for Celeste, begone with ye! To the ocean! Reef! Whatever! New forum!
