At least it wasn't cold anymore.

That thought comforted Alex to a certain extent as he left the buildings of Y'orek behind and ventured out across the Blighted Plains. The differences between here and the mountains were clear - while the northern reaches of Phaldan Island were freezing, the air was at least clean and fresh. Down here near Y'orek, the air was pleasantly warm, but it was thick with smog and all manner of pollutants. It did not make for the most agreeable of training experiences.

Unfortunately, Alex had to spend some time in this choked wasteland. Four of the pokémon that remained on his to-catch list made their homes in this part of the world, so the plan was to find and recruit those pokémon as quickly as possible before heading back east to cleaner pastures.

So, what's the hit list for today? Inquired Guru, who was doing his best to levitate above the more disgusting patches of poisoned mud.

Alex checked his list. "Out here, we've got Croagunk, Gastly, Litwick and Roselia. Keep a look out for any of those."

Litwick's a new one, I take it?

"Yep. Looks like a sentient candle." He'd come across Litwick while reading up on the new species that had cropped up since the Jgsei invasion. The ghost/fire combination was unique and curious enough to pique his interest, so it had found a place on two of his planned teams.

So a ghost, a battletoad, a living candle and a rosebush. Got it.

The blighted plains, if it wasn't dead, it was dieing. Small dirt devils whirled across the gray sands and tufts of brushy grass broke the monotonous pattern of 'nothing to see here'. Apart from the soft hollow howl of the wind and grit in your eye, nothing lifted a claw in your favor.

Crunch-crunch, went the dry cracked earth underfoot.

Hoooowl went the wind.

Sniff-sniff-Sob went the floating mask.

What?

Alex looked up, and quite suddenly he was looking right at himself. Or a mask rather. There was an Alex mask floating right in front of him. And it looked very very confused.

The sobbing sound came from the apparition holding it.

:yamask Level 50
It looks like Alex. Imagine that. I bet he finds lots of these things now.

He heard the cries first. They weren't ones from a pokémon that he recognised, so Alex reflexively looked up to determine the sound's source...

...only to be met with something very peculiar indeed.

"Um, Guru? Why does this pokémon have a mask of my face?"

The Alakazam quirked an eyebrow, looked up at the new arrival, and twitched his moustache.
I think you're seeing things again. That's just a normal mask, it doesn't look anything like you.

The mask critter wasn't moving, so Alex took the opportunity to consult his pokédex for more information.

'Yamask, the Spirit pokémon. Each of them carries a mask that used to be its face when it was human. Sometimes they look at it and cry. Each retains memories of its former life.'

The Yamask sniffed, and gazed intently into Alex's face, as if it were somehow familiar. Guru noticed this, and took the opportunity to do a little surface probing...

...but that's not possible.

Alex looked over to the slightly perturbed psychic. "What's not possible?"

It has memories of its past life. *Your* life. If I didn't know better, I'd say that this Yamask used to be you. The Yamask turned to face Guru, recognition in its eyes. The Alakazam shook his head. But that can't be true, you haven't-

"Died?" Alex interrupted. He shook his head, and sighed. "Actually Guru, I have died. Twice. You just don't remember it for some reason."

Pah, Guru scoffed. My memory's perfect. If you'd died, I'm sure I would remember it.

"Dunno what to tell you. Call it a supernatural mindblock, whatever. This Yamask is proof that I'm right. It is me. Or at least it was me."

Guru paused for a moment, and blinked. I suppose it would make sense. But you have to admit, this is incredibly weird, even by our standards. And you've set the weirdness bar pretty damn high. He looked at the Yamask again. So what do we do about this one?

Alex took a second to think about it. "We take it with us. Maybe it'll be more comfortable at the ranch, in 'familiar' surroundings."

Yamask took note of the word 'ranch', and floated back over to the trainer. Alex produced an empty Luxury Ball from his bag, and held it out to the ghost pokémon.

"What do you think? Perhaps we can both get some answers at the ranch."

Of course, Yamask eventually evolved into a defensive powerhouse of a pokémon, but Alex didn't know that yet. If the ghost joined him, then its evolution would come as a pleasant surprise.

Yamask looked upon the luxury ball with a sad sort of longing, as if remembering the time he first acquired the ridiculous number of the silly things to begin with. Slowly he reached for it, ethereal paw just grazing the shining surface when...

Not one but two Gastly materialized from the swirling dust on the winds, snatched him by his little arms (if you can call them that) and hauled him back, away from the dreadful device. Yamask squealed in horror. Nuuuuu!

The two ghastly cackled and clutched him tighter. A looming purple shape strode forward from some unseen sphere, rippling into existence on the third step from his plane to this one. A gengar is what it appeared to be, and it pointed a little claw at Alex.

You. Me. NOW buddy. Right here. Come and get it.

Well, I guess if you wanted you're little helpless look alike, you'd have to kick gangster gengar's ghostly butt.

Ohhh, he just grabbed his crotch and flipped you off. Do something. Quick. Please? Before he brings out the bling?

Of course, it wasn't quite as simple as all that. Where would the challenge be in recruiting a past life spirit version of oneself if there were no ghostly lackeys around to try and prevent it from happening?

Even this turn of events was good news for Alex, though. As it turned out, Gastly was one of the species on his to-catch list, and here were two of them, almost begging to be fought. Beat up a Gastly, catch another one, save the Yamask, and recruit the Yamask. Sounded easy enough.

Or, Alex thought as the third ghost pokémon materialised to challenge him, cut out the middle man altogether and go straight for the Gengar. While Gastly was indeed on the trainer's wish list, it was only as a stepping stone towards Gengar. Fast, powerful, diverse in attacks - they were like ghost versions of Guru.

Excuse me, I'll have you know that I am in no way gangsta. Guru said, slightly peeved. This beeyotch, however, be dissing yo homies. I suggest busting a cap in the mofo's ass. Quite.

Three on three seemed the best option, and since Guru wasn't particularly well-equipped to handle ghost attacks, Alex's selection was easy enough to make. Penny was out first - the Blissey could distract the Gastly henchmen while Alex's other pokémon concentrated on the Gengar. Her duties would be to meditate up, then blast one of the smaller ghosts with a debilitating wave of psychic energy. If Yamask managed to get knocked free in the process, even better.

Faraday and Zalera were Alex's other battlers. The Magneton and Spiritomb were each given a Lum Berry for safekeeping, with instructions to consume it as soon as needed. Alex had read enough about the species to know that they were masters of confusion and hypnotic induction - best to have a contingency plan just in case statuses kicked in.

Speaking of statuses, that was exactly what Alex was planning. Zalera concentrated his efforts entirely on the Gengar, attempting to lull the other ghost into a trance-like state of helplessness. If that worked, he would proceed to smite Gengar with a ball of pure darkness. Not enough to faint it, but easily enough to weaken. As for Faraday, he was going to divide his attention between two of the ghosts. First up, a pulse of static electricity aimed at the Gengar, to soften it up for Zalera. After that, a second pulse intended for one of the henchmen, to speed along the rescue efforts.

Alex would stand back and wait for his opening. Once he saw it, he would lob a Luxury Ball at the Gengar and hope for the best. Might as well. Not like he was going to run out of them anytime soon.

.3 (For the record. I'm on the office comp and I have not downloaded the cal onto it and don't feel like it. I'll be guesstimating damage.)

Snap Crackle Pop, East Side met West Side! Electricity crackled over the wind and struck the Gangsta Gengar in his big ethereal gut. His mouth made sort of an O shape but the OOOF sound was unheard. With a wicked gleam in his eyes, he dematerialized and reappeared behind Penny. His long tongue raked across her back making her shiver all over. Pure disgust doesn't describe her feelings. The pervert. She couldn't move due to the horror of it all.

And now he couldn't either! A look of alarm struck his sneering face when he realized the full effect of the lighting bolt. For some reason, he couldn't budge! This didn't make sense. He didn't have muscles. NO FAIR! And then he started to feel very sleepy, which didn't make sense either. He fell over then. Out cold. Somethings are best left unexplained.

Some gangsta. He didn't even feel the wave of dark energy that sent him rolling over the gray cracked earth. He left a little drool trail that seeped into the parched earth. The pokeball pinged him in the head and that was that. Problem solved.

The two ghosts, one not as well off as the other, were now in a bit of a bind. Alex's mini-me glanced about fretfully. One thug was incapacitated but the other was still going. It was better to hide in the background until the smoke had cleared. Somewhere he'd conjured a "Go ME!" Sign and was waving it around, cheering Alex/Himself on.

Gastly 1: 30% HP (used Hypnosis on Penny)

Alex made a quick assessment of the battle situation as it stood. The Gengar had been suitably beaten up and captured, Gastly Goon #1 was reeling from Penny's psychic onslaught, and Gastly Goon #2 was too overloaded by static to fight properly. The only problem on his own side was that Penny had eaten some statuses, so he had to call that as a significant success.

Spotting the Yamask off to the side doing his own little spot of cheerleading, Alex gave the ghost a nod before turning his focus back on the Gastly.

Don't worry, we've got this. Guru added. With the Gengar out of the way, it was much easier to reassure the Yamask.

Back to the battle, then. Under Alex's direction, Faraday and Zalera moved to cover Penny while Alex tended to her status. He dug out another Lum berry from his pack, and popped it into the sleeping Blissey's mouth, causing Penny to reflexively chew on the restorative fruit. While she recovered her senses, the Magnezone and Spiritomb readied blasts of darkness and electricity to lob at the Gastly Goons. If for some reason that wasn't enough to finish them off, then as soon as Penny was combat-ready again she would lay some psychic smackdown on whatever was left standing. Or floating.

Penny is good as new and earned .5 EXP.
Zolera earned 1.0
Faraday earned .5
+1 :fs for saving yourself.

This is a Fudd Mod because I feel it's an appropriate spot. The two Ghastly are Vanquished! And now you're free send your previous self to the great beyond, or the ranch down the road. Which ever suits you. It's a personal moment and I'm not going to dictate it.

It's getting dark now and Alex sees some funny blue lights in the distance. No. They're not the candle pokemon. They're from those funny blue LED headlights that all the new cars seem to have. The guy driving this vehicle (your choice), nearly runs you off the road. He's in a big hurry to get somewhere, or to get away from something. Follow him, and he leads you back to town. Go in the direction he was driving from, and you find a haunted house!

Autoharvest berries, mod confirmation?

~~~~~
The battle was quickly finished. In truth, it had been for some time, ever since the Gengar had been captured. While Penny took it upon herself to patch up the scratches of her teammates, Alex checked up on the visibly relieved Yamask. The little ghost had now conjured up some ethereal pompoms, and struck a victory pose as he floated over to the trainer.
"Gengar's gone to the ranch, but he won't give you any trouble." Alex explained. "There are lots of other pokémon there to keep him in line until he mellows out, and it's a big place anyway."
Yamask nodded. He remembered flashes of the place from Alex's previous stays there. Alex readied a Luxury Ball, and held it out for him.
"Ready to go?"
The ghost poked the ball with an arm, letting himself be sucked inside and transported to safety and familiarity. Two more pokémon added to the squad, then. Seven to go. Alex recalled his other pokémon, and set off again with Guru to continue his recruitment drive.
Soon enough, the sun started to dip below the horizon, and the choked skies darkened some more. Not that this would deter Alex at all - it'd probably be easier to find a Litwick at night, if anything. Concentrate on the ghosts now, and the Roselia could wait until the morning.
He saw the lights first, flickering in the distance. For a moment, Alex thought it could be the candle pokémon that he was looking for, but the faint rumble that accompanied the lights suggested something else. He figured out that he should get out of the object's path just in time, and stepped aside just as an off-road SUV screeched past, retreating into the distance as it rushed back towards Y'orek.
That guy appears to be in a hurry. Guru noted, twitching his moustache.
"I wonder what he was running from?" Alex mused, looking at the tracks left by the vehicle. Guru could almost see the cogs whirring inside Alex's head when he said that, already resigned to the effects of the curse of curiosity.
I know that look. You're going to follow the tracks back to whatever was so horrible it caused a man to run away screaming.
"Maybe. There could be a Litwick up ahead. What's wrong with that?"
You're going to get yourself killed. A pause. Actually, I suppose that's just a minor inconvenience for you now, isn't it? Well, you're going to get *me* killed.
"No I'm not. Look at all the things that we've faced so far. Not one of those things has killed you."
...That's terrible logic and you know it.
"Okay, you can teleport at the first sign of danger. You'll be fine."
Guru just shook his head as the pair followed the car tracks back to a curious building. A house, old, slightly run-down. Probably abandoned. None of the lights were on, if they worked at all. The door was unlocked, and swung open with an ominous creak.
Haunted house. I'm calling it now.
"That'd be great. Might be haunted by the pokémon I want. Let's go." Alex pulled out his BT-issued pair of Multisensor goggles, slipped them on, and activated the thermal imaging mode. Between that and the night vision mode, he'd at least be able to see where he was going inside the house. Guru was already sweeping with Miracle Eye, just in case.
I know how this is going to go, Guru said to Alex as they examined the ground floor of the house. There'll be an inexplicable storm outside to set an atmosphere of tension and imminent horror. Cue a muffled peal of thunder from outside. Then we'll find out that someone died here, before we split up and one of us gets our life force sucked out by the ghoulish monster that killed them. My money's on you, by the way.
Alex looked over from a broken tesla coil that looked to have been part of some ungodly contraption. "Glad to see you have so much confidence in my ability not to get killed."
Your track record hasn't been very impressive recently. Just saying.
"Besides, it's only a creepy looking house. Just because it's abandoned and spooky doesn't mean that anything..." Alex tailed off as the translucent figure of a small boy drifted out from a wall, crossing the room before disappearing back into the woodwork. "...happened. Okay, that was suspicious."
Guru's moustache twitched frantically. I told you this place was haunted, but no. You've brought us to a murder house to satisfy your armylust. I hope you're happy.
"I'll be ecstatic if we catch a Litwick." Another ghostly figure, this time an older woman, phased into existence and passed in front of the trainer. She didn't seem to notice him as she moved. "But I'll try and speed things up for you if it'll make you feel better."
Guru nodded, then frowned as they approached a wooden staircase that extended in both directions. This is the part where you want us to split up, isn't it?
"It would help. You wanna take upstairs or downstairs?"
Oh no, I'm not going near any basements. That's where all the murdering happens in the movies. Upstairs for me.
The Alakazam hovered up the staircase, while Alex ventured down into the depths of the house. The basement was... well, pretty much exactly what you'd expect the basement of an abandoned haunted house to be. Dark, weird musty smells coming from the walls, levitating bricks, a purple flickering light, some dusty furniture... hold up.
Levitating bricks?
The first brick slammed into the wall just beside Alex's head, causing the trainer to flinch and duck away. Unfortunately, this only served to put him directly into the path of the second brick, which scored a hit to his temple, causing him to fall to the ground in a decidedly ungraceful fashion.
Ow. Am I bleeding? He cautiously patted his head around the point of impact. Only a little. I'll live. But why am I suddenly so tired? And is that purple light getting brighter?
He remembered what he read about the Litwick species. They resembled candles, luring people close so that they could use their flames to- oh dear. The last thing that went through Alex's head before he blacked out was, damned murder houses.
Across the room, the ghost's flame burned brighter than ever as it let out a malicious cackle.
---
Alex came to at the top of the stairs, just in time to see Guru floating back down from the upper floors.
Clear upstairs. The psychic said, twitching his moustache. Have you checked out the basement yet?
"Good news and bad news on that front. The good news is that there is definitely a Litwick in the basement."
And I suppose the bad news is how you found out it was a Litwick, right? Guru asked, twitching his moustache.
Alex sent the Alakazam a glare. "If you must know, I think it killed me. Sucked out my life force and everything. Not something I'd recommend, to be honest."
Called it. Came Guru's smug response.
"Whatever. Now that I know it's down there, I'll be ready for it this time. And if I'm right, it won't remember me. That's how it's worked so far."
Instead of giving Guru time to respond, Alex had already started down the stairs again, this time with a pokéball in hand. As soon as he reached the basement, he tripped the mechanism, and Penny materialised with a flash of light. And across from her hovered...
... not a Litwick. Instead there was some kind of floating lamp creature in the basement, and it looked thoroughly confused. Alex consulted his pokédex for an explanation.
"Lampent, eh? I think it evolved on me."
The pokémon in question wasn't polite enough to wait for Alex's revelation, aiming a stream of flame at Penny's body. The Blissey's skin was slightly singed, but she recovered, blasting the Lampent with a burst of static electricity. Alex seized the opportunity to ready a Friend Ball and lob it at the paralysed ghost. In the trainer's defence, the capture attempt almost succeeded.
Lampent broke free of the ball, and went after Penny again. One gout of flame on the ghost's part later, followed closely by a more potent unleashing of electricity from the Blissey, and Alex tried his luck again with another Friend Ball.
*wiggle*
*wiggle*
*wiggle*
*ding*
Alex exhaled in triumph, and plucked the ball from the floor of the basement. One more down, six to go.
Not to spoil the moment or anything, Guru piped up from the staircase, but now that you've caught the blasted thing, I suggest we leave the murder house and continue searching outside. Where no-one will get murdered.
---
By the time Alex left the mansion, it was already close to sunrise. The skies to the east were light - they must have been inside for longer than they thought. No matter, though. He still had two more pokémon to find out in the blightlands, and daylight would make that task somewhat easier. After that? He'd figure that out when he was done here.
~~~~~

Summary:

Alex finds a Lampent, catches it with 2 Friend Balls. (resets happiness?)
Penny takes some damage in the fight, probably a burn as well. Nothing a Softboiled and a Lum can't fix.

0.5 :gexp2 , and I'll say a 5 on the trust. Lampent has been caught at Lv 40, male, and apparently the Friend Ball will bump it into 1 :happiness . Penny's on 200 HP, with a burn, so just deal with that as needed.

Upon leaving the crazy murder house, the atmosphere almost immediately lightened. Now, it was still fairly sombre, for these were the Blighted Plains, after all, and it had a reputation to uphold, but even for a sinkhole of gloom, it was comparatively less depressing and creepy.

As Alex travelled along the road, it soon became clear that there was a purple blob waiting for him. Well, it wasn't really waiting for him. It had been waiting for something else, it seemed, and just as it came into view, the Pokemon could be seen expanding itself over a mystery victim, swallowing it whole with a surprisingly large mouth.

Groaning bitterly, as though bitten by some sort of horrid gastro bug, the whiskered menace turned to find his next victim. Ah, that human looked he might fill the gaping hole inside. He was certainly quite long for a human; that ought to help plug up the feeling of depravity and emptiness within the endless void of a stomach the Swalot possessed. Giving a weak roar, the Swalot turned towards Alex and lunged, mouth opening wider and wider, beyond the 6'8" frame that it was trying to engulf.

Omnomnom.

Penny's injuries, while not severe, were still potentially troublesome. Luckily, being a walking pokémon centre had its advantages. A quick Refresh to rest off that pesky burn, then a handy Softboiled for rejuvenation, and the Blissey was all set to go. Excellent.

Flash forward to the new encounter, then. Alex saw the purple mouth-blob, recognising the species as Swalot. Apparently they liked to eat things. And since he now fell into the very vague set of 'things', it wasn't too surprising that the Swalot considered him as a prospective snack. Should've known something would try and make a meal of him out here.

"So what was that you said about no-one getting murdered?" Alex said to Guru, in almost too calm a tone for someone about to get swallowed whole by a blob monster. Guru twitched his moustache.

I meant somewhere that *I* wouldn't get murdered. At this point it's pretty much implied that you're going to be doing a lot of shuffling on and off the mortal coil. Besides, what a way to go.

Alex rolled his eyes. "I'd rather not get digested today, thanks. Not that you'd remember it anyway. So would you do the honours? You might need two blasts."

Guru nodded, readied his spoons, and unleashed psychic hell. A strong telekinetic charge might distract Swalot from its target, and would certainly make a mark. A second blast would follow in quick succession, just in case.

The Psychic Pokemon was fast. There was no denying that fact. Alakazam readied his dual spoons and unleashed a powerful burst-like attack, which had the purple blob swallowed whole. At first, it seemed to have neutralised the attack, but then there appeared to be a miniature explosion within the depths of the Swalot, and it hiccuped a rainbow-coloured cloud.

Taking a second to shake off the momentary confusion, the Pokemon then retaliated with its own attack, leaping high into the air and landing forcefully on the psychic Pokemon with its full weight. It would have to put the digestion of this human off to the side for now. The shrewd fox Pokemon with the undeniably fancier moustache was its primary target now. It hated people with nice-looking moustaches than the two flimsy whiskers it sported around its snout.

So there the Swalot was, sitting on Mr. Spoons, when it felt the ground rumbling. Feeling a bit uneasy, it tried to hop off, but found that it could not. The next second, it had been sent flying by some sort of percussive force which came from underneath. The Psychic attack sent the Pokemon flying, and it landed in a crumpled heap a few metres away, no longer able to eat. It was well and truly down for the count.

Pokémon were getting tougher in these parts, Alex noted. Scare away all the weaker wild critters by bringing a strong team, and inevitably the powerhouse pokémon would come out to try their luck. Nature of the competitive beast, and all that. Still, even a level advantage couldn't save the hungry Swalot from Guru's wrath, such was the psychic's immense power.

Well, that was fun. Guru deadpanned, flicking traces of purple gunk off his moustache. I suppose it's reassuring that you didn't want to catch this one. Would've caused all manner of chaos at the ranch.

"Yeah." Alex agreed. "It wouldn't do at all to have half the pokémon there get eaten." As Guru used some of his accelerated healing powers to Recover off the damage he'd taken in the fight, Alex made a quick inventory and map check. Still plenty of supplies, so no problems there.

"The good news is I only need two more pokémon from here. Shouldn't take long if we're lucky."

Guru nodded, and the pair set off again. More patrolling awaited them.

Fortune seemed to be smiling on Alex regarding the next encounter. After one actual and one attempted murder, the next residents of these poisonous plains he'd meet seemed a little less inclined to killing.

In the distance, slowly coming into view, were a pair of Roselia locked in what initially looked like a battle, but, upon closer inspection, was actually what seemed to be an intricate ballet. The two circled and danced around each other, never touching, always moving out of the way of the other at the last possible second. This display had attracted a small crowd, in the form of a Koffing, a Gastly, and a Stunky, who were all watching in varying levels of awe.

Human and Alakazam were free to approach. Frankly, it was debatable whether they were even noticed.

Bingo.

"Any luck?"

Roselia dance-off up ahead. They've got an audience.

Alex was in luck. Sure enough, a pair of dancing Roselia came into view, with a bunch of wild pokémon seemingly transfixed by their movements. And on top of that, nothing showed any signs of aggression. The perfect scenario, really. He waited for a moment with Guru, content to simply watch the artistic display while he came up with a plan.

You know, they really are quite graceful dancers. Guru noted on the private channel.

Alex nodded. Seems a shame to interrupt them.

That wouldn't do at all.

We'll wait for this display to finish, then I'll introduce myself.

In that case, I'll enjoy the show.

And that they did. When (assuming) the impromptu ballet eventually did draw to a close, Alex took the opportunity to strike up a conversation with the Roselia.

"Hi there. I'm Alex, this is Guru." He said, motioning to the psychic next to him. "I have to say, you're both excellent dancers."

Guru was ready to translate the response, or at least give Alex the gist of it. There was of course the small matter of the three pokémon in the audience, but Alex was aiming to avert hostility with a combination of pacifism and having an overpowered psychic bodyguard on hand. As is custom around these parts.

(0.3 :gexp2 . Somehow this was the first thing that came to mind. If inappropriate, I can change things up.)

The two Roselia rose out of their bow slowly, smiling demurely. It was always rewarding to perform for an audience and to receive applause at the end. One of them delivered a kiss to the exclusively male audience, sending a small spray of pink petals out towards them.

When the human approached them, they looked a little surprised. It was not usual for humans to join their audiences. Thus far their clientele had been predominantly Pokemon. As the Alakazam translated his trainer's message to the sisters, they smiled and accepted the praise graciously. "Oh, that's very kind of you..." one replied, slowly drawing her rose-hand up her thigh, pulling the short leaf skirt back a bit.

"Yes, it isn't often we are approached by men such as yourselves..." the other added, eyeing Guru with particular interest. "In fact..." She sidled up to the Psychic type, running a soft rosebud down his arm. "You certainly are a beautiful creature, aren't you?" With a sly wink, she pulled herself away and spun herself around the Psychic Pokemon, reappearing on his other side, hand on her hip. "I like a foxy man..."

The other Roselia was watching, smiling slyly. She had watched her sister at work before, and was not at all surprised. It was part of the job description, after all, to be able to throw yourself at anyone and make it believable. It was always a bonus when the man you had to throw yourself at wasn't a complete eyesore. She gave the human another glance. They had never had a human client before; something about it seemed innately wrong, even to the warped morals of the Roselia sisters. Still, if he paid enough, there was a first time for everything...

"So, you as well?" she asked, addressing Alex.

Picking 2-4 berries from all trees.

~~~~~
Well this was new. Alex, amazingly enough, had never been propositioned by a pokémon before. Not even one that worked as a prostitute. First time for everything, he supposed.
Guru was revelling in the attention. Like Alex, he knew that the Roselia's actions were calculated, and that seduction was merely part of their 'business', but unlike Alex, he didn't care. The Alakazam was a pokémon, after all, and the female currently feeling him up with a rosebud hand was quite attractive.
Alex held up a hand at the other Roselia, politely declining her generous offer. Apart from not being interested, it would not be something he would want to explain to Steely when they met up again.
Not that Guru minded.
Looks like you have me all to yourselves, ladies. Guru said to the Roselia, suavely flicking his moustache. Shall we retire to somewhere more, ah, secluded?
Before they left, Alex sent the psychic a quick message on the private channel. See if you can get one of them on our side, okay?
On it.
---
So while Guru was off having all sorts of fun, Alex was left to deal with the other wild pokémon. He didn't particularly want to deal with angry locals right now, so Zalera was called out for a bit of added insurance. The Spiritomb hovered next to Alex, ready to deter any of the gathered pokémon if they decided to become aggressive. Apart from that, there wasn't really much to do except wait.
Alex, wherever in the world are you?
Alternatively, he could take note of Steely's thoughts in his head, and test out the telepathic link between them. Yes, that seemed like a much better idea. Alex had no idea where she was, so he decided to broadcast a generic reply. Was she even aware she was talking to him over this distance?
You called?
What where how I don't even, Nope, turned out she wasn't aware of it. Oh, right, hahaha, where even are you?
Just outside Y'orek. I guess this telepathy thing has a larger range than I thought.
Huh. I'm over next to Necrophicix. I wonder how far... anyways, hey, I need your help, if you're not busy,
Ooh, a potential distraction. Guru sure was taking his sweet time over there. Just a couple of horny Roselia, but Guru's 'taking care' of them. What do you need?
Well, long story short is that I'm in a life sized chess battle with a dude who's made a castle out of trash and I can't play chess to save my life- Wait what?
It was certainly an odd scenario by most standards, but by now Alex had seen so much weirdness that he took this latest craziness in his stride. Besides, he considered himself to be a pretty good strategist, especially since he'd started working with Guru. It's better for both of us if I don't think about it. As for chess, I like to think I have some skills. Need me to play by proxy or something?
...yeah ok I agree. But uh... here, let me explain what's going on...
It didn't take long for Steely to describe where the pieces were and what they were doing, so Alex was able to conjure up a mental image of the game that was going on. And Steely wasn't kidding when she said she couldn't play - her board position was a complete mess. Guru would have had a field day with it. Although judging by the bursts of psychic energy emanating from the distance, the Alakazam was having something of a field day with the two Roselia...
Moving on.
Alex took a moment to figure out the best sequence of moves, then sent the mental board over to Steely, showing her a visual of which pieces to move where and when. Luckily, while the guy she was playing against was good, he was by no means error-free in his playing. Thanks to his games with Guru, Alex knew how to mercilessly exploit any such errors, and eventually he was able to turn the match around. When the checkmate came, he nodded to himself. It had been a good mental workout for him.
Once Steely had finished up and ended the psychic phonecall, Alex's attention shifted back to Guru, who returned with something of a spring in his step and a twitch in his moustache. He was just finishing up his sales pitch to the two Roselia, and it looked as though they had been talking for some time.
So that's that. There's plenty of space on the ranch, which I assure you is much more pleasant than these parts. And my trainer is nothing if not a gentleman - whether on the ranch or out on the battlefield, you would be treated with the respect you deserve. Are either of you lovely ladies interested?
Not a conventional method of recruitment by any means, but still. Never let it be said that Guru was not prepared to take one for the team.
So, the lucky Alakazam had the two Pokemon to himself. As they retired, one of the sisters winked at the other. They could always charge more for a double encounter. Men did always seem to have it in their minds that if one was good, two must be better.
When they returned, the only sign that any action had taken place was that Guru's moustache was perhaps a little unkempt. The two Roselia, however, looked as perfectly preened as ever. He had his arms around the two ladies, and they were giggling away as he made his sales pitch. Yes, it all sounded nice, but there was really one thing that would motivated the girls.
"Well, yes, that does sound lovely, but that would put us out of a job, would it not?" The lady on his left purred, tracing a path down his neck with her rosebud hand. "If you could arrange a salary for us, then I suppose it is quite possible..."
The other Roselia was quick to add, "And of course, don't forget that our current services require payment..." This was the only way they could earn their living, after all, and in the high-flying world of Pokemon prostitution, you needed cash to survive. All the products spent on keeping the body desirable, and mood-setting, did not come cheap.
"So, what do you say, honey?" they crooned in perfect unison, stepping away from Guru and standing side to side with each other, arm outstretched, head tilted, with a slight wink.
While the Roselia were outlining their terms, Alex and Guru had a private telepathic conversation of their own.
*How* much are they asking? What the hell were you doing out there?
I'd have thought that was fairly obvious.
But two thousand? Unless they were literally bathing in saffron, that's a bit steep.
I knew I recognised that scent from somewhere!
Never mind, can't be helped. Second order of business - I'm not giving them a salary. They're asking the entire yield from my investments. Come to think of it, where would they buy things anyway?
Okay then, import the various oils and bodywashes and glitter and what have you to the ranch and write it off as a business expense. Black Tesla orders in so much food and farming supplies and materials that a few extra grass pokémon accessories are trivial.
Fine, but you're breaking the news to them.
Guru turned back to the Roselia in question to address their demands. Luckily, their feminine charms weren't having quite the desired effect, thanks to his natural clarity of mind. Still, there was no need to be uncivil.
My trainer will gladly settle any fees due for services rendered. As for a salary, I think we can provide an even better alternative. As residents of the ranch, your every need will be taken care of. We're incredibly well-stocked with all manner of supplies, and anything you need that we don't have? We can simply have it imported for you. Some of our other residents have rather... eclectic requirements, so I'm sure we can cater to both of you more than adequately.
Perhaps, given enough time on the ranch, the Roselia would come to realise that they no longer needed to resort to prostitution to survive. Of course, they would first have to agree to come along in the first place, and that depended on how they reacted to Guru's negotiations.
Amidst all of this, Alex couldn't help but think that everything would have been a lot easier if he'd just battled them traditionally in the first place. Damned recruitment ethics.
Hmm. That was indeed an interesting proposition that they were given; the two Roselia hadn't actually expected that. Although, they could identify rich marks when they saw them. This guy didn't exactly appear super-affluent, but all things considered he had the means to back up what he said. This was good. They could milk him for everything he had if they were lucky, or at least get everything they wanted from him. That much was a start. Besides, he was offering them everything they asked for and more.
Why not?
"Okay, fine. We'll take it," said the first Roselia.
"But this better be worth our time, little man..."
'Little' potentially referring to Little Alex, not actual Alex, because hey - whores were whores through and through. And if they didn't like what they got, then they'd be so out of there.
So now Alex could offer them a pair of balls and make them happy, then move on. Okay, I feel dirty just thinking about that. Yeah, no, not going there again. Anyway, that's that done. You had to spend money and deal with their whorishness - and this is going to cost you just for upkeep. Hooo boy.
The Roselia hookers were on board, which was excellent. Alex whipped out his (Luxury) balls, and registered them to his roster. Once that was done, they were off to the ranch. Their beauty product demands he probably could have financed himself, but thanks to BT, he didn't have to. Being part-owner of a business tended to have perks like that. Besides, who was to say that their attitudes wouldn't gradually change given time in the ranch's relative luxury?
Anyway.
Alex was almost done here. He just had one more pokémon to catch in the blightlands, then he could head back to a town and plan the last leg of his catching tour. With Zalera recalled again, the trainer started hiking across the toxic wasteland once more, Guru at his side.
Just the battletoad now, right? The psychic inquired.
Alex nodded. "Yep, just a Croagunk. Any that looks capable will do."
Good. There's only so much I can take of this ambient smell.
In this day and age there's only one thing more elusive than Duke Nukem Forever (which I guess we fixed now):
BATTLETOADS.
But then you hear a sinister voice ahead... a woman's voice. And there she is. Clad in very, very, very skin-tight black leather. Long black hair and... a lot of skin showing. Holy shit this woman is hot. Like, damn, sleeping with her would give you an Achievement in life. However, she's probably not interested in you. She's probably more interested in the three Croagunks that her Pokémon have tied up.
An Emboar and a Raticate, to be exact.
"Oh my... someone's found us? This won't do at all," the lady said. "Deal with it!"
"Yes, my Queen," the Emboar said. Oh shit, the Emboar talks? And why is he calling her Queen?
And so you are going to have to defend yourself from the dark Queen. And rescue those poor battletoads!
Alex had been out here for some time. So far, he'd beaten up a gangsta Gengar to save a ghost version of himself, had his life force sucked out by a Litwick in a haunted house, and sweet-talked a couple of Roselia prostitutes into joining his team. With all that had happened on this trip, surely it wasn't too much to ask to just find a random Croagunk in the wild and capture it, right?
The scene up ahead reminded him quite firmly that yes, it was.
Right then. Time to assess the situation.
Captured battletoads, check. Sinister-looking woman in skintight black leather, check. Some nice eye candy for the interested reader, there. Guard pokémon of the Emboar and Raticate variety, check. They looked pretty strong too. And seeing as how the woman's first reaction was to attack him, Alex wasted no time in taking defensive measures.
Wait, did the Emboar just speak? Whatever. There would be plenty of time to analyse pokémon linguistics after the battle.
Two pokéballs left Alex's belt, and two pokémon materialised to face the enemy. Zalera the Spiritomb was entirely at home in this environment, and even more at home against a fighter and a normal type. His ghostly body would be especially useful here. Partnering him, and making his debut in the field, was Mothra. The Volcarona hovered in place, orange petal-wings beating steadily as he stared down the Emboar.
Alex called out a "Pick your targets and let rip," to the two pokémon, and they duly obliged. Mothra eyed up the Emboar as he started to perform an intricate dance, before tapping into the psychic powers that Alex helped him unlock, aiming to blast the Emboar with telekinetic energy and with great prejudice. Zalera focused on the Raticate, concocting an evil plan in his mind, then bombarding the rodent with grey globules of pure fighting spirit.
So Mothra starts dancing. The idea of a gigantic flying bug doing a mid-air dance is slightly creepy. In the meantime, the Raticate clamps its fangs down on said Mothra, in order to hurt the big bug as much as it possibly can. Then the Emboar coats its body in flames and crash-tackles Zalera. And then, of course, Zalera-- being really slow-- starts plotting. Trust the Spiritomb to take its sweet time.
Anyway, it gets all kinds of chaotic from there. The Emboar falls down, clutching its brain-meats and unable to move. The Raticate decides that taking out its friend was a bad thing and, in revenge, unleashed a Double-Edge on Mothra... right before the Spiritomb finished off the Raticate.
So in the end, the only one standing was Zalera, and even then the ghost was still fairly injured. But nonetheless, Alex had won out.
"Gaaaaah!" screamed the woman and, in a fit of rage, teleported away into the shadows, never to be seen again because there are no useful sequels.
The Battletoads, in the meantime, started croaking really loudly. Maybe freeing and convincing them to join was a good thing right about now?
Hooray for swift brutality. Mothra had put on a fine display of style and power, and even though the giant insect had been KO'd, he had managed to take that Emboar with him. Add to that Zalera's domination of the Raticate, and the end result was an excellent victory. Queen Skintight Leather apparently didn't want to stick around, so that left Alex alone with his pokémon and the captured Croagunk trio.
Well that was anticlimactic. Guru materialised back from wherever he had been hiding out, twitching his moustache. Not even a parting villainous monologue? Shame.
"Hey, she left quietly, and the Croagunk are safe over there. It's all fine by me. Speaking of which, could you take care of them while I patch these guys up?"
The Alakazam flexed his frontal lobe, causing the ropes holding the battletoads to unknot themselves and fall to the ground. Meanwhile, Alex had recalled Mothra and sent out Penny to tend to Zalera's injuries. Mothra's condition was a bit more serious, so it was the ball for him until they reached a pokémon centre. Once all the traditional post-battle rituals were complete, Alex turned his attention to the freed Croagunk, and addressed them directly.
"Hi there. I'm Alex, that's Guru." He said, motioning to the psychic. "I want to ask you something. You've probably guessed that I'm a pokémon trainer. Well, I've got a ranch up north, and I've been looking for a Croagunk to train. Would any of you be interested in joining up with me?"
It's a very nice ranch. Guru chimed in. Lots of space, plenty of company, any number of poison and fighting types to help you train.
There was a Luxury Ball waiting if any of the Croagunk wanted in.
The three Croagunk looked at each other, communicating wordlessly amongst themselves with odd gestures and flaps of their long arms. It was impossible to even guess at what they were thinking, and before Guru could inquire for himself, they seemed to have reached a decision. With a perfectly synchronised movement, two of the toads pushed the third one out, causing him to stumble forward and plant his face in the dirt. Then, the two of them skedaddled, leaving a trail of dust in their wake.
So much for friends.
The abandoned Croagunk looked up at Alex and the shiny red ball in his hand. Well, he was certainly acting nicer than those two losers had treated him. It had been years of abuse now - somehow Croagunk had never fitted in with the other two, but he liked being around them, and they did kinda sorta notreally accepted him. It made him feel cool, to be one of them. But it was painfully clear now that they had never regarded him as anything special. The toad sighed. Another botched attempt at friendship. He got to his feet, slowly, brushing himself off. Would this human treat him any better? Humans had a bit of a mixed reputation, and Croagunk had never seen it for himself, so he couldn't tell.
But then again, he kinda sucked when it came to judging one's character. Those two 'friends' of his were a prime example. That was the story of his life - he'd find Pokemon he thought were cool, and genuine, hang out with them, and they'd turn out to be rotten to the core, and just abandon him on a whim for something else.
Sigh...
Oh dear. It appeared as though two of the Croagunk had 'volunteered' the other one, and run off. Still, at least the remaining frog critter looked willing to give Alex a chance with the whole training thing. Sending the Croagunk an apologetic smile, Alex tapped its head with the Luxury Ball, sucking it inside and sending it away to the ranch for the time being. With all the pokémon already there, there were bound to be a few potential friends for it.
Once that was taken care of, and Penny and Zalera had been recalled, Alex consulted his to-catch list, and nodded.
"I believe we're done here."
And there was much rejoicing. Remarked Guru. Now can we please go somewhere that doesn't smell like the unmentionable end of a Muk?
"I was thinking Brightopolis. Do some shopping before we head out to the Torrid Range."
Sounds good.
