Travel Plans: Mist Valley -> Sinklands 1 -> Soggy Hillside -> Mayriver

Poke'Radar is on.

Refreshed and ready for the next part of her journey, Alex and Co set out into Mist Valley...

And immediately wished they'd brought an heavier jacket. Or at least Alex did. She hadn't realized, it seemed, from the name, that Mist Valley actually meant a valley of mist. She tugged her light sweatshirt around her chest a little tighter. She glanced around and decided it would be best to pull her hair up for this leg of the journey. A few moments passed as she pulled her hair into a messy bun and started again. She punched a few commands into her PokeTech, turning on the Poke'Radar function.

Luaith protested the movement of her shoulders with a small grunt, but the fire mouse was rather quiet besides that. She figured it was because, well, it was wet and he was a Fire-type after all. He didn't like anything wet. The Cyndaquil curled into the warmth of her neck and sweatshirt hood more, determined to find a heat source.

Hey, at least it wasn't raining at least. Alex almost felt the need to say "yet" to that thought. She let out a breath of air and started forward, keeping a watchful eye around her. She checked the egg, making sure her extra clothes were between it and the layer of bag and the outside. She would carry it, but she didn't think it was going to do to well in the wet either.

And there was the problem of her clumbsiness. She'd break the thing, or drop it in mud before long if she held it.

Not a good idea at all.

All of a sudden, and damn that was quick, the Poké Radar began beeping. However, all the mist in the air made it rather difficult to see anything, because it was just that freakin' thick out here. It was almost hard to breathe, truth told. So choked up was the sky that eyes would water and vision would be obscured. Stupid mist.

However, all hope was not lost. There was indeed a beep to follow, and that sound did exactly as advertised; brought the creature right to the trainer. Of course, it was now clawing at your leg and when you looked down, barely able to see it in the mist, there was a sort of ruddy orange form grasping down there with some seriously weird protrusions...

Oh, it was a Paras. Stupid Paras, go away, we don't want you. Or maybe you do?

And that, my friends, is the question you need to ask yourself. Do you want that Paras? Better decide, before it starts drawing blood with its claws.

The PokeRadar beeped really loudly at her and she winced. Alex looked around through the mist (which was like trying to look through a wall, really) for what had triggered the Radar, and couldn't find any of it. She went to step forward when she got the oddest sensation. It was as if something was scratching her leg, hard.

Luaith let out a sound and stared off her shoulder at the thing scratching her. It took Alex a few moments to realize that it actually was something scratching her, and not just her imagination.

There was a Paras scratching her leg. She looked around, to see if there were others with it, but, of course, she couldn't see jack s--- in the mist. This was... well.. She needed to do something before her leg erupted in red lines of blood. She bent down, careful to not disturb the Paras too much, and gently grabbed it around the middle, trying to get it off her leg.

"My leg... is not a scratching post, Paras," she said softly. Luaith chattered in her ear, slightly disgruntled. The young woman rolled her eyes and shushed him. If he wanted to battle the Paras, he wasn't going to do it on her leg.

That would be incredibly bad.

The Paras suddenly found itself picked up and flailing its claws in the air, looking very suspiciously like one of the little critters that had attacked her in that stupid cave. Apparently, Parases had a thing for Alex. Quite possibly a species-wide fetish, but we shall ignore that creepy creepy thought and resume with some actual narrative before the image seeps into our brains.

...too late. Damnit. Anyway.

The Paras suddenly hissed at Luaith, for all bugs feared the mighty element that was fire. Nobody wanted to get burned, anyway. The Para's hissing came out almost acidic in nature, spraying the Cyndaquil and the human alike with droplets that felt like a vague burning sensation. Nothing bad would happen, of course, but it was still cause for concern. Something would need to be done about this critter and soon - either a fight, or letting it go, because there didn't seem to be any middle ground any more. Stupid Paras.

Suddenly, having to fight this thing while it was in one's hand was not a good idea, nor was letting this creature get away with being a little bitch.

The concept of the Paras' of the region having a thing for her was a disturbing thought. And the Paras in her hands really did seem familiar. Oh good grief. How wonderful was this going to be...

The Paras flailed and sent acid at her and Luaith. Ow. Her neck stung and Luaith let out a screech, jumping off her shoulder. She let of the Paras, to let him fall and hit the ground however the hell he did. She took a few steps back as Luaith stepped in front of her.

"Luaith, let's teach this Paras that scratching my leg is not a good one. Start out with an Ember. If it misses, do it again." she said. She saw the fire mouse nod and get into a stance to do battle. His back flared with fire and he let out a call of battle.

Alex wiped her neck, wincing slightly. Man that was unpleasant. That insect would learn not to attack her again.

The Paras suddenly found itself on the ground, not having anything hold it up any more. This was a strange and unwelcome development that it did not appreciate in any way, shape or form. After all, it just wanted to make some friends... obviously, this was not happening any time soon. The Paras was sad. Very sad indeed. The poor little bug just wanted friends! Okay, so it went about that the wrong way, but it was the thought that counted, right?

Said friends were bad. The Paras knew this when it was set on fire immediately and was then knocked out because, after all, bugs hate fire.

Friends don't set each other on fire!

Well, you now had a toasty bug lying with its back down, unfortunately unable to move or do anything other than lay perfectly still. What a coincidence, we've learned a lesson here: screw Parases.

Well. That was... fast. I mean, that was really fast. She knew Fire-types were lethal to Bugs, but she woulda though the mist would have dimished that. Apparently not.

And if the Paras wanted to make friends, clawing at her leg was not a way to make them. Really, while she had wanted to, ya know, possibly catch the Paras, just for grins, after that incident, and the one in Diglet Cave, no more.

That's right. Screw Paras.

She picked Luaith up and set him on her shoulder again. The fire mouse seemed pleased with this turn of events and snuggled into her neck. Alex made sure the PokeRadar was still on, and started out again, this time hoping to not run into any Paras.

And so the journey continued.

Unfortunately, there was no beeping this time. Could that be considered a good thing when you were looking for Pokémon? After all, it meant that there was nothing there to jump on your leg and start furiously humping it like that Paras probably would have given half a chance. After all, critters these days weren't exactly as intelligent as they used to be.

That was when, all of a sudden, you noticed your foot sinking into a puddle of mud. Ugh. Screw Parases, mud's worse. The mud was thick and sticky, and taking another few steps in the heavy mist would reveal yet another puddle that would no doubt prove a vexation. Keep walking and, true to form, there's another. And another.

Hey! You've reached the Sinklands. Funny that.

Gross. So gross.

Alex tried to pick her way through the mud carefully, but she just seemed to sink each time. How gross was this? With a disgrunted sigh, she rolled up her pants to her knees and trudged through the mud, hoping she didn't get stuck.

Or fall over because she was stuck. It was asking a lot, really. And hopefully, she woudln't end face down in the damn mud.

She really didn't want to end face down in the mud.

The mud was sticky and clinging, but Alex was actually making some really good progress. She'd managed to get through it without getting herself covered in too much mud, which was definitely a relief. The mud puddles subsided and became a hill swarming with stupid misty crap as per usual. Alex had, after all that, made it to the Soggy Hillside.

Then, all of a sudden out of nowhere?

SMACK!

A bird flew head-on into Alex's forehead, landing with one of its wings. It wasn't beak first, fortunately, which would have probably cracked her skull open, but hitting with the leading edge of a bent wing was still seriously, seriously a world of hurt. No blood, just some bruising and a throbbing headache.

Poor Alex was going to need a big hug after all of this was over - or pay some serious psychiatric bills.

However, when she looked at the culprit - and the culprit stayed around long enough to look back - she would find that it was a critter that she'd never have seen before, which was a curious sight. This, my friends, is a Pidove. It's your standard bird fare, and at least it doesn't look entirely ugly... mostly... okay, yeah, it's still your usual ugly mass-produced flying-type. Kinda like a Starly, really.

It could be worth a lot. Or at least rare. Or maybe you could just beat it up for giving you a killer headache. Whatever works.

Finally. No more ruddy mud! She liked this. She really liked this. Alex started up the hill, muttering less about the mist, and more about the fact it was a hill. She pulled her sweatshirt around her tighter and leaned into the hill.

SMACK!

She let out a yell and toppled backwards down the hill. Luaith jumped off as she tumbled, looking around for the source of the thing that hit her. Alex came to a stop and swayed. Her forehead flared in pain and she held it for a moment. Once the world stopped, she got up, still holding her face, and made her way to Luaith.

And then she saw it. The bird thing, that seemed to hover as though it was making sure she was okay. It was a bird... but not one she'd ever seen before. She blinked at it, ignoring Luaith's chatter at her feet.

She kinda wanted to name the bird Winchester...

Blinking painfully as a headache started to creep behind her eyes, she looked the bird over. Perhaps she could, well use it for something?

"I'm a'right little one. Though I thing for punishment for flying into me, you should come with me," she said to the bird, which she still didn't know what it was. If nothing else, perhaps she could trade it eventually for something, well, more interesting?

And if the bird didn't want to come quietly, a little roughing up wouldn't hurt it.

The bird was fluttering, confused. What did this human want, exactly? Go with them? Uuuuh... The bird chirped a few times, signalling the fact it had basically no idea what was going on any more. The Pidove was probably retarded or something.

It blinked once, then twice.

At that moment, Alex was looking into the face of derp. True, unadulterated derpiness like the world have never seen before. And you thought new things were automatically good.

The Pidove wasn't sure what to do next, but that may have been because its mental capacities were the same as a tomato's.

"Pidove!"

So it was a Pidove. Or so its call seemed to identify it as. And it was derp. Herpderp. Yeah, she'd definately catch it and put it on Poketopia... no way she was using a bird so derp.

She glanced at Luaith and nodded. "Luaith, let's roughen it up a little with a Quick Attack. Please don't actually kill it, a'right?" she said, fishing through her back for a Pokeball. That bird was so derp... would it even fight back when her Cyndaquil attacked it?

She wasn't sure it would. Alex sighed.

The quick attack wasn't expected any time soon, but the Pidove was knocked flying through the air and then got up quickly. Turns out the bird was barely fazed by that attack, for the fact it was so... well, the bird was a resilient one, unlike most of the trash birds that flew around these parts.

Then it reacted by flapping its wings and conjuring up a gust. Apparently it wasn't entirely dumb, because it wouldn't defend itself otherwise - poor Luaith was picked up and blown around by the winds, being so small and cute-like. The Cyndaquil landed on his tummy, then had the chance to get up. Well. This bird could take a hit.

Might need to hit it so hard that it doesn't get back up any time soon. Could be a good idea.

Oh. So Herpderp could fight. That was good to know. Alex glanced at the bird as she spoke to Luaith.

"Luaith, lets try blasting it with fire, but in a kind of a circle shape," she told him, hoping he'd somewhat get the message. The point was to surround the bird in fire, before he could pick up a gust of wind again. She was unsure if the message would actually, well, makes sense.

"If that doesn't work, hit it with Ember!" she added, just incase the first trick failed.

This bird was indeed so derpy that its defences were impenetrable. Or maybe it was just a function of being one of these new fancy Pokemon - they all seemed to be ridiculously strong anyway. Whatever it was, Luaith was sent reeling with two blows.

The next shot would have to be a seriously killer hit, because at this rate, one of them was going to go down hard. Or, perhaps, maybe a Poké Ball was in order - or maybe just kick its ass and live with that. Hm. There were many options.

Oh good grief! That thing was built like a tank. It really had to be. Luaith panted some feet from her, exhausted. Alex was sure that she wasn't going to be able to get another attack in.

She rolled the empty 'Ball in her hand for a moment. "Hey! Herpderp! Catch!" she yelled, throwing the PokeBall at the bird. She readied another to be thrown, in case the first one missed.

Pitch!

Shake.

Shake.

Shake. Ding!

Wow, that was easy. The little derpbird had been sucked into the Poké Ball like it was nothing and had thus vanished away from sight. Well, even if it was a total retard, maybe it could be cured. Time and training tended to fix such things properly, and there was always a hope that a Pokémon could be cleared of any mental conditions that it may or may not have been suffering with a little love and some time.

But hey - Luaith was hurt, and you had a new bird. Now what?

Well that was. Well look. She now had Herpderp. That was good, wasn't it? The woman shrugged, walking over to pick up the pokeball. While she'd inwardly call it Herpderp, she had no use intention of naming the thing anything other than what it was called already.

She went over to Luaith and sprayed him with a potion. The Cyndaquil piped up and jumped onto her shoulder, happy to be out of the grass and healed.

Alex checked her map and started off in a direction for Mayriver.
