Freeform Specs
Approx. Duration of Song: 1m35s

Setting: Magnet Train Bridge

Purpose: Enter the February Monthly Contest
Notes:
Fordy's Request

"I'd like to see someone do a freeform that's not a story or a comic.

Like, a song?

I've been hoping someone would do this for a long time. Obviously I shouldn't do it. But this is a call for someone else to!"
I put no more than 5 hours of work into making this song on FamiTracker.
Also, the song has a tendency to skip if you browse while listening to it.

Reward: EXP

Sometime in the not-too-far-off future, Leslie Shallows will attempt a stunt. There will be no one watching him do this; it will be for his own appreciation. In the dead of night, while the Magnet Trains slumber, Leslie will strap on his Air Treks, step onto the rails, and attempt to travel the length of the bridge at the fastest speed he can reach. Before doing this, however, he will take his Pokétech, tune its radio, slip his earbuds in, and this is what he will hear as he embarks on his epic stunt.

"Good evening Opaddekan night Noctowls! You're tuned to W8BC, Opaddeka's home for Chiptune music! And here's the latest from underground artist 8bitdonut!"

Okay, I'm the brave one. Or the only smod who cares. Whatever. Let's do this.

So, obviously we have no text here so I'm ditching every known logical grading system. This may be arbitrary. We'll see. However, I do have a system-ish in place. (I also wish I had timestamps to help me illustrate some points, but I'll live)

I can sort of hear the legendary motif. I understand where it comes from, at the beginning - it's a little harder to hear because it's a chiptune, but being used to chiptunes I get the point. When you normally think about a legendary, it's crashing sounds and orchestras and powerful music that makes your heart quiver in awe/fear. After about... oh, I don't know, maybe a minute, it really gets into a Pokémon-themed track, so that's when it starts making sense.

It's not too long, it's not too short. My one critique is that I cannot find a long section to loop it well, which would have made this piece awesome, in my opinion. There's also one section towards the end where the beat is slightly off with the melody in a different way than it is early on, which detracts from the piece. Other than that, it's well-created musically. It's not a mind-blowing piece of music to me, but it's still well-founded. And I'm sitting here listening to this on loop. I do like it.

As for your media choice, it's good. Considering early Pokémon music was purely chiptune based on the limitations of the system at the time, it works rather well. This is what I imagine the Gerbils being should they have appeared in Gen I with some kind of intro cutscene.

This is going to sound ridiculously arbitrary, and it is. I admit it is. I do appreciate how much time it takes to piece together something like this. However, the track isn't long, and so that (like a freeform) makes your score less.

So your score is 9 :ffexp . After all, this is something nobody has ever done before. It's new. It's original. It deserves a good score.

Also, I'm not claiming any GenXP for this, because it was more of a music review and less of a read. Now go home. <<

Lol, 9 exp is way more than I was expecting for this and I'm very appreciative that you took the time to figure out how to smod this. I don't expect to do another one of these, but who knows, I'm unpredictable! =D
