"Are you certain that I should do this?"

Jared stood just outside of his designated battling area, hidden from view from the crowd, alongside with his two companions, Seifer and Solinari. Jared was having qualms about using the Little Cup for reasons other than fame. Sure he gets a bit skittish about being well-known, but that hardly mattered in face of the real reason of why he's here.

Seifer stood his ground in front of his uncertain trainer. "I'm certain of it. Remember the first Grand Melee?" That took Jared back to when he first showed his face in publicity. He had used Rono that time, and placed third. Everybody had underestimated him and, what was back then, his Aggron. Now that everybody were aware of Rono's capabilities, there's no way that Jared could repeat his first Grand Melee experience. However, that does not mean that Jared couldn't hope for an unsuspecting opponent.

The Floatzel continued as if there wasn't a pause. "This is the best way to do it. Rono needs something like this every now and then. Draken, however, needs to control his power. You know full well how he tends to overdo things."

This drew out a sigh from Jared. "Yes, I know, Seifer. But, isn't there any better way of going about doing this?" At the Floatzel's shaking head, Jared's tiny ray of hope was extinguished. "One is good, two might be enough, but three? That's kinda pushing it, and I don't want to be treated like a celebrity!"

In response, Seifer began pushing Jared towards his designated battle area. "Don't you worry, you have me and Solinari to get you out of out-of-control situations." At Jared's protest of "But Seifer!" he added, "Just go! Do your best!" With this, he gave one mighty heave and thrusted Jared out into view.

The Floatzel then smiled as Solinari floated over to join him. "Now we can enjoy the show."

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the arena, our challenger Jared Atskido! You've may have seen him before as he took third in the Grand Melee! Let's see how our challenger prevails today!"

The crowd applauded excitedly at your entrance. Seemed more than a few remembered your rather surprising turn around during the Grand Melee. You were correct in that few would underestimate you again.

"And now, for Jared's opponent. You know her best as the Princess of the Pros, Crystal Gemsten!"

A girl of your own age entered the arena dressed entirely in an adorable princess ballerina outfit, complete with pink tutu. Her blonde curls bounced as she seemed to glide forward. She paused and bowed several times to the crowd as the fans erupted in deafening applause. This little cutie had captured their hearts long ago. She giggled in that girlish way then turned and gave you a small wink. Then she delicately raised two pokéballs and tossed them into the air.

"Twinkle! Precious! Let's go my lovelies!"

The balls burst open revealing her pair, a Snubble and Elekid. The pink canine growled and flexed her arms cutely. Both ears were bound with matching pink ribbons. Elekid began spinning his arms charging up and let off a shower of electrical sparks. Both pokémon waved to the crowd. They certainly had stage presence.

Crystal turned and bowed to you. Rules were rules and as the challenger you had the first call.

As soon as Jared entered the spotlight, the announcer confirmed his fears. Yep, no doubt about it now, he's a celebrity. Moreover, the audience seemed to remember his debut at the first Grand Melee with Rono. This does not bode well.

As for his opponent, Jared almost did a facepalm. What is it with him battling girls at his age or younger? The previous time that had happened, he got called a thief. Here's hoping that this one won't prove to be much of a problem in the way of name-calling, branding, etc.

His body tensed when he saw her Pokemon. Snubbull's nothing to worry about, but that Elekid worried him. Jared knew these two Pokemon from his native land of Jhoto. Elekid would prove to be a problem if he left it alone. He also knew that they do know some fighting moves.

Jared had not forgotten that disastrous encounter with a certain Mankey in a certain forest. He said in a whisper, "Sorry Rono, you'll be sitting this one out." His team chosen, Jared sent out his Gible, Draken, and the unnamed Vulpix. Speaking of the Vulpix, he would have to think up of a name for her.

"Guys, we need to concentrate on defense first. From there, we can shift to offense. Set up a Safeguard and Sandstorm. Vulpix, I know that Sandstorm will not help you, but try to bear with it."

Jared was no pro battler, but his father was. His father had futilely tried many times to get Jared interested in battles, but the lessons still stuck with him. A good mix of offense and defense would do you good in the long shot. Sandstorm would help Draken evade attacks thanks to his ability, while Safeguard would help ward off any status attacks coming their way.

Peering into the sandstorm that was surely blowing across the stadium, Jared decided that now was the time for offense. "Draken, aim an Earth Power at that Elekid. Try not to overdo it this time, please. Vulpix, try throwing some Embers at the Snubbull." Hopefully, some of them would score their mark and burn her, making her attacks less effective.

Crystal put her hands to her face and giggled. She was fairly impressed with the first orders Jared called, but seeing which pokemon he'd let out amused her a little, particularly the little dragon. "Set up, Twinkle, then weaken the Vulpix. The Gible's yours, Precious. Wear him down and ice him!"

Twinkle moved first, throwing his arms forward dramatically as pink energy shot from them and encricled himself and Precious. The dog, showing her inexperience, looked momentarily surprised, and tried to gnaw on the sparkling barrier to no success. Vulpix howled and formed a similar sheild, transparent and glittering with a different type of protection.

Twinkle responded to the copycatting with a glare that made Vulpix step back slightly, until the dirt and dust around the arena floor rose as if it had a life of its own, tossed into a writhing sandstorm through Draken's power. He melted into the storm, contently in his element. The other pokemon on the field coughed and looked less than thrilled with the change of weather pattern.

Vulpix was the first to launch an attack, a mouthful of hot embers crossing the battlefield to strike the Light Screen. The attack passed through, slowed and cooled by the barrier, and caused Precious to give a small yelp and hop backward. She sat down and wagged her backside in an appeasing matter, trying to look cute and nonthreatening. It had its desired effect on her opponents; even Draken, whose view was partially obscured, got the message and hesitated.

Then, with a rumble of the ground, glowing chunks of energy rose from the arena floor like ghosts and hurled themselves at Twinkle. The Elekid's barrier was likely the only thing saving him as they slammed into his body and knocked him backward. He buzzed angrily at the dragon, just as Precious hurled herself forward into the raging storm.

She ignored the stinging sands in her eyes, tearing toward where she'd seen the attack on her partner come from. Cold air swirled around her fangs and ice began to form on her teeth. There was a strangled cry after she threw herself at a form in the sands, and then nothing. Precious trotted back to her partner's side, her frills and ribbons looking a little tattered from the grains of sand, but there was nothing from Draken, not a move or sound.

One against two. Vulpix was on her own.
