I held the lanyard in my hand and waited for the numbers to be called out. My hands were sweaty and I tried to dry them on my jeans but it didn't seem to be working. Flexing my palms open and close only made them stickier and I wasn't sure if I was up to this. Sure, Alicia was as confident as ever, but she was always like that. She fell during the Legendary Capturing Competition and because I managed to avoid most battles after that, this made her victory count effectively zero. I didn't know where her confidence from. My battle with General Floyd proved to be a failure, with little Bell fainting. I wasn't going to risk that again.

The Little Cup seemed to fit me pretty well since I mostly owned young Pokemon; but it was hard to choose who to enter because everyone seemed equally disadvantaged. I had been leaving little O-me out though so I decided that he should participate, and I couldn't go anywhere without Alicia. That left me with one more slot and I thought since I hadn't been interacting much with Creighton, I should try battling with him. He was my starter from the OME and therefore I predicted he should be tougher. He almost fell to one X-Scissor from an Anorith though; and I wasn't sure if he was as bulky as he seemed to be.

"69!"

I stood up and started walking towards the stadium. How would this go? Could Creighton move effectively on an arena without water? He didn't seem too good with that when I battled the General. However, I did choose who I chose and I had to have faith. I stepped forwards, biting my lip and hoping for the best. Maybe my opponent would be as new as me in terms of experience. I could only hope so.

The spotlights were blinding, and the roar of the crowd was like waves crashing over and over again. To someone unused to crowds, it could be downright overwhelming; there may be more people in this stadium right now than in Maikeru's home village. Over everything, the announcer's voice boomed over the speakers, exciting the crowd even further.

"Ladies and Gentlemen! Our next challenger is a newcomer to competitive battling. Please welcome, all the way from Slumber, Maikeru!"

Okay, so he'd gotten the facts a little wrong regarding home town. The crowd applauded, but the real cheering began at the next words.

"His opponent is one of the Pro Circuit's newest sensations. She came from nowhere to take a place in the quarter-finals in the Felcrest Endurance Cup, third in the Tromante Round Robin, and a hard-won first in the Slumber Double Rumble. Maikeru faces Monique Depaul!"

A blond woman came into view opposite Maikeru admist screams of adoration from the audience. Her white shirt and blue jeans appeared paint-splattered, and a black beret sat on the top of her head. Walking in her black heels like a model on a catwalk, she grinned and blew kisses into the crowd until she had reached the trainer's box, where she snatched up a pair of pokeballs and sized up her opponent.

"Monique is known for her wide variety of pokemon, from fighting types to water types to an array of dragons. She's never fought with the same team twice."

Monique tossed her pokeballs out into the arena. "Noir! Blanche! Time to shine!"

Two female pokemon took the field. A Makuhita smashed her fist together and got into a fighting stance, focusing squarely on Maikeru with narrow eyes. A Feebas flopped a few times on the floor next to her, until the fish managed to settle herself in a mostly upright position and wiggled her tail. She gave her trainer a look as if to say 'there's no water here, you idiot' before she looked to her battle partner, ready to go.

Monique gave a respectful nod toward Maikeru. She knew first hand that 'new' didn't mean 'unskilled,' after all. "Good luck--"

"The challenger may now choose his pokemon, and give the first commands," boomed the announcer's voice again, drowning out whatever else she may have been about to say.

The lights shone; and I suddenly felt like the time when I stood in the blizzards of Alabaster and the overwhelming white of the light and snow took over. Standing there, feeling the heat of the lights, kept me grounded in reality -- that I was still here, in the stadium. The people all applauded politely, their many faces watching. I could barely see any of their features: to me, they all seemed the same and downright scary. These faceless creatures, just like those who chased me out of town, seemed threatening. Of course, they weren't here for me. Who would be? Just a newcomer and they even got my hometown wrong: but it was fine. It was better than revealing that I came from nowhere. At least Slumber was known to have the most intelligent of people.

When she appeared, the crowd exploded; not literally, but it might as well have been. She actually felt comfortable here, sashaying down from her entrance, blowing kisses to her adoring fans. With a quick movement, she tossed two Pokeballs without hesitation: a girlish sumo-wrestler type Pokemon and a fish. I snatched up my Pokedex; I wasn't that good at recognising Pokemon yet, but when the names I appeared, I remembered that I once had wanted to use a Makuhita. The names she called out too were stylish -- I felt a bit childish, giving my Pokemon such bland names.

She nodded at me. I nodded back. It was nice though; she wasn't as stuck up as I thought she was. I muttered, "Same to you, but it's not like you need it." My mind moved through my line-up; Alicia would have a severe disadvantage against the fighting Pokemon. This only left me with two. That wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I plucked two of the Pokeballs off my belt and released them.

Without pause, O-me scuttled on his feet. He knew what to do. Creighton however, did not. I thought about this long before. His Water Spout move could attack both his opponents. It was true that Feebas was a Water-type too and it probably wouldn't affect her much; but I had to take my chances. I pointed at the opponent's side and directed: "Water Spout!" His large blubbery body didn't seem to have much probably moving in the area, surprisingly, bouncing along with ease. The flailing Feebas might have some problems, unless she had some tricks up her sleeve.

Monique looked at the two pokemon to face her own. She giggled a little at Creighton, though in a 'oh, how cute' fashion than anything insulting. Then she heard the single order, and a very clear 'oh crap' look crossed her face. "Fake Out that Wailmer, Noir! Tear it down, hurry!"

Noir obeyed quickly, tearing across the battlefield with uncharacteristic speed to sock the black Wailmer in the face. He bounced backward, stunned, his first attack momentarily forgotten. Blanche then propelled herself forward with a thrust from her fins to tackle Creighton's blubbery side. She bounced back without leaving much of a scratch, then threw herself forward again with what seemed like utter desperation.

Then Creighton's attack came. Water gushed from his spout to flood the opposite end of the field, crashing against Noir's body and sending her backward. Blanche faired better, actually seeming to enjoy the added moisture.

Then there was O-me, his little spores like the calm slowflakes to Creighton's typhoon. They settled on each of Monique's pokemon in turn, causing then to drop to the floor of the arena, drifting off to dreamland.

Monique's teeth were gritted, and it sounded like she was cursing through them. Even if she wasn't stuck up, no one liked to be steamrolled like this. She took a deep breath to relax, and flashed a weak smile Maikeru's way. "You're pretty good." She may have been a good battler, but she clearly wasn't thriving under the limitations of the Little Cup like he was.

The Feebas moved swiftly; I expected it to be fast in the water, but on land too? Fake Out -- it was a strong attack and I didn't expect Feebas to have it. A look of pain shot through Creighton's face and he was rendered motionless for a few moments. I gritted my teeth; would he pull though? The Feebas tackled him one more time; but he managed to regain his momentum and let loose a huge blast of water. I stood back, watching in awe: most of the time he managed to only use this attack when his HP was really low, but now, he really blossomed. Both Noir and Blanche were bombarded with the water; but of course, Blanche seemed to enjoy the dampness of the area.

Spores started to fall as O-me peppered them directly into the opponent's area. Both of them fell asleep promptly and I was impressed, yet again, by his potent powders. Monique's jaw clenched hard and I bit my lip. I didn't expect the turn to go so well but since it did, I was proud. Something took root in me; maybe it was a seed of confidence? She smiled sadly and said, "You're pretty good." She was good too; the Fake Out was unexpected, but I guess she was better with stronger Pokemon with a more extensive array of moves. She did specialize in variety.

"You're good too. The luck you gave me must've worked."

Creighton and O-me now looked at me and I quickly muttered their orders. "O-me, X-Scissor on the fish. Creighton, Brine on the Makuhita." Both of them nodded. O-me scuttled with his claws rubbing against each other towards the Feebas and Creighton prepared another round of water-blasting.

"Looks like Miss Depaul has run into a tricky situation with both pokemon taking a nap on the field." Dsipaired the announcer. The audience, clearly fans of the young woman, were crying out from their seats, urging her pokemon to wake up, rather than be pummeled in their sleep. Much to Maik's surprise though, there were a few very clear voices that were excitingly cheering for him. The people knew talent when they saw it, and his was very clever tactic.

Monique knew defeat when she saw it, and all she could do was root for her young pokemon to awaken. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it doesn't. And that odd is increased the more a pokemon cares about its trainer. Her words broke through the muddle mists of dreams for just one. Noir awoke with a frightened start, eyes flying awake at the roar of the crowd and leapt quickly to her feet. The poor fish though remained out cold.

"That's my girl!" Cried Monique, "Show that paras what your made of!" She was determined to go down fighting.

The Makuhita lunged at the bug, tackling it from the side. Creighton was faster though and intercepted with brine. The salty spray knocked the fighter's attack askewand only a mushroom was nicked, allowing the paras to carry out his assault on the sleeping fish.

"And that's it folks! We have a winner. Maikeru, though new on the scene, clearly has what it takes to succeed here today. May both challengers exit the field for a short break before the next battle."

Maik's opponent was a fine trainer. She had lost as many battles as she had won, and what made her a pro was that she knew how to take a loss gracefully. Solemnly she withdrew her downed companions and bowed respectfully to Maik.

"You fight well." She said with a sad smile. "I hope we meet again. Good luck with your next battle." And then with a humoring wave to her fans which still clearly loved her in spite of her loss, strode across the field and made her exit. More cheers erupted from the stands, both for her and now for Maik as well.

It all boiled down to who would wake and who would sleep.

The crowd went wild, people stretching out from the seats, standing up and punching the air, cheering her and her Pokemon on. Monique too didn't lose hope and encouraged her Pokemon, hoping her words would break through the slumber. I crossed my fingers behind my back; I didn't like seeing them fall under my Pokemon's strength, but of course, I still did want to win. Monique is a formidable opponent with many accolades under her belt -- if I defeated her, it would confirm for me the fact that my path as a Pokemon trainer wasn't a mistake.

"Go Maikeru!"

Random voices in the crowd were excitedly cheering me on; and I was taken aback. I took my eyes off the battle to grin towards the random cheers; but only for a second. Noir's eyes opened and jumped right on her feet and Monique gave her instructions. The Fighting Pokemon dashed towards O-me and I winced; I knew he resisted Fighting attacks, but I could not assume that Noir wouldn't perform something else.

Creighton however was fast. Seeing Makuhita charge, he released the first blast of water. Noir could barely lay a scratch to O-me; and O-me scuttled away quickly to tear away at the tattered fish that still slept. I yelled, "Good job, Creighton, O-me! You guys did great!"

"And that's it folks! We have a winner. Maikeru, though new on the scene, clearly has what it takes to succeed here today. May both challengers exit the field for a short break before the next battle."

I couldn't help but grin. Somehow, I knew I could do this. It didn't make me feel good seeing my opponents fall; but it did sure feel great to win. Monique smiled at me weakly, and she said, "You fight well. I hope we meet again. Good luck with your next battle."

I gave a nod and thanked her: "It was an honour battling with you."

She waved at her fans as she trailed off the stage. I bowed. Cheers continued to erupt and I left the field to take a rest with Creighton and O-me.

Blinded by the magic.
0.3 - Your rolls... kinda... suck.

Time slid by without notice. The rest between the first and second battle didn't seem like a rest as much as an interim period for you to re-organize your plans. The pressure, the excitement of the battles seemed to linger, as you could hardly forget the first match. But before you were able to savor the inviting taste of victory, you were going to put on trial again.

But the scenario had changed. You were no longer an unworthy challenger trying to find a footing in the vast arena; you were one of the victors, who would be recognized for your little flair in challenging the Cup regardless if you did emerge victorious or not. The changing attitudes from the stands re-affirmed your confidence as a trainer; when all the applause and genuine cheering erupted across the stadium, you were, for once, aware that people weren't simply making noise out of basic respect. They had recognized your strength, and they were respecting you as Maikeru, not as 'a random trainer from Slumber'.

You had, by your own strength, placed yourself on the arena as a serious competitor for the Cup. But this was by no means an indication of an easing of paths. Rather, you still had a long way to go.

'Welcome to the second round of the Little Cup, right here at the Stadium! After the grueling first round, we have weeded out the weak and managed to select true trainers deserving for a shot at the Cup. But two obstacles remain for these aspiring trainers. Who will make it to the last round; who will topple their competitors and edge even closer to the Cup?

To my left, a trainer who has made himself famous in the Cup for his ingenious use of Spore to stifle his opponent's chances. From Slumber, Maikeru!'

It didn't matter that the announcer hadn't bothered to correct his fact. The volume of the cheering, however, seemed to have increased after that first victory. You were gaining for yourself a small fanbase dedicated to worship your 'match-breaking Paras', though it remains to be seen whether you were going to live up to the new expectations tagged onto you. Or the meager underground bets. Who would've thought you were going to knock Monique out?

'And to my right, we have a new competitor as well! Presenting the top Brightopolis scholar from the 7th grade... Tommy Urshaqin!'

The little midget that strutted onto the arena seemed oblivious to the sudden eruption of cheers; it was almost as though he had been used to the fame, he might even have a disdain for it. The eyes that pierced yours from behind the translucent glasses, however, told you that he was no pushover unlike what his stature suggests.

'Maikeru... impressive.'

The Pokeballs burst upon impact, revealing a Chinchou and a Bronzor. It didn't seem like a direct counter to Spore, but Tommy probably had his reasons for playing these two. Would Paras' physical attack pierce the steel coating of Bronzor? And Creighton probably didn't like the look of Chinchou's electric arsenal...

Tommy doesn't want to lose. It'll be your job to secure your own victory.

.3 - Thanks. I guess this would be a tough battle >:

I was determined to try let Alicia get a bit more experience this time, since I didn't manage to battle with her previously. Furthermore, she never actually had a chance to truly battle to win; she only had experience when I had wanted to capture a friend. When my number was called out again with another, I stepped out into the field. When my name was mentioned, I heard cheers. For me. That was a nice surprise and I felt my courage swell up within my chest. I was determined however not to let it go to my head. Monique had a bad turn of events; her Pokemon were badly matched against mine.

'To my left, a trainer who has made himself famous in the Cup for his ingenious use of Spore to stifle his opponent's chances. From Slumber, Maikeru!'

The use of Spore was surprisingly well-received; but the bad thing about that was how it was announced as I was introduced. This took away the surprise this time, for my opponent was sure to know of my strategy. Perhaps they would try to take O-me out in the first round and I couldn't afford that. He was one of the strongest Pokemon in my arsenal; his spores were extremely useful. The opponent faced me as he was introduced.

'And to my right, we have a new competitor as well! Presenting the top Brightopolis scholar from the 7th grade... Tommy Urshaqin!'

The cheers exploded. His eyes shot right through me; his body betrayed no emotion. It seemed like he was just pure intellect. Despite his diminutive height, he was solid. His lips only released a hissing of words: 'Maikeru... impressive.' I bit my lip and simply nodded. I didn't know the use of the move would be so controversial. When he released his pair of Pokemon, I was taken aback. Unlike the previous battle, where my attacks tended to be neutral, this pair of Pokemon had good defenses. Chinchou were famous for their unique typing that protected them from almost every type of attack; Creighton would not be able to be used. And Bronzor... they were strong defensively; I knew that because Bell had the exact same type as them. This looked like it was going to take a long time.

It would have to be Alicia and O-me; but even then, I had my doubts. I plucked the Pokeballs off my belt and in a flash, released the two of them. Again, O-me scuttled away hurriedly; and looking Alicia just made me realize what might be able to save us this time. I instructed her to proceed with Blizzard immediately when she entered -- then I realized she hadn't learned Icy Wind.

The lowering of speed could have allowed my Pokemon to move ahead of Tommy's; however, it was too bad. I didn't know whether they would be able to survive this round; hopefully Blizzard would be able to freeze one of them. I still had to take the chance, right? Alicia charged up her Blizzard attack, even though both opponents were not weak against it. I bit my lip -- would the raw power be enough to do substantial damage?

Tommy Urshaqin was a nerd. His pokétech was out the second he saw Maikeru's pokémon, and he started clicking away furiously, faster than most people knew how to read. It was impressive, in a way, if not incredibly, incredibly dorky.

battlepedia

Snorunt: Snow Hat Pokémon. Speed: 50.

Paras: Mushroom Pokémon. Speed: 25.

Note: Effect Spore; the opponent has a 10% chance of inducing PARALYZE, POISON, or SLEEP when struck by an attack that requires physical contact.

"Fifty... twenty five... physical contact..." Urshaqin was muttering under his breath. He narrowed his eyes spitefully as the enemy snorunt stepped forward, timidly, as if arriving for tea rather than a blizzard, and performed her first attack. Perhaps if the seventh grader had studied before class his chinchou would have gotten the first strike.

A chill automatically surged through the air. Even from where the trainers stood they must have felt the sudden shift in temperature. It was incredible to see how Alicia manipulated the air around her, absorbing all the heat in the environment to create a frigid cold, condensing the clouds further to hurl angry shards of ice at both opponents. Chinchou shuddered as an icicle pierced her antenna; the bronzor seemed unfazed where he lay.

"It's not very effective!" the announcer boomed.

"Now," Tommy the 7th grader barked out. "Thunder Wave! Hypnosis!" Chinchou responded instantly and jolts of positive and negative electricity sprayed out of his antenna in a wave of yellow energy. It struck Alicia completely; her cells froze in shock.

O-Me was not about to sit this one out. He crawled forward furtively, eager to avoid the remnants of Alicia's blizzard, latching himself onto the nearest available opponent: Chinchou. Instantly O-me released a stream of dangerously potent spores which seeped through the angler's moist skin. Chinchou, too, was down for the count.

Finally bronzor rose from his horizontal position on the ground - he had been largely invisible up until now, flat in the grass like a sewer plate - and began to spin ominously around Alicia. Although she was frozen like a statue her attention remained fixed on the hypnotic bronze pokémon. He turned up and down, his body glowed pink, and Alicia's mind was retreating into sleep... Even through her paralysis her eyes fell shut.

Urshaqin didn't hesitate to issue the next command. Chinchou was down but so was the snorunt. "Bronzor, confusion! The paras!" Full sentences were beyond the 7th grader at this point. His heart was pounding with resolve. Bronzor shifted gears [no pun intended] in a moment and began to erratically thrash itself around the paras. It spun and dove and sent out waves of psychic energy as it threatened to attack the chinchou, no, itself; confused, and slightly frightened, O-Me's instinct was to continue leaking out sleep-inducing spores. And so he did, pumping an additional dose of sleep powder into the already semi-unconscious chinchou.

"It's a status effect bonanza down there, Martha!" the announcer cried. "A cable salad of nasty attributes!"

"Are you drunk?" Martha hissed back.

This wasn't good. Tommy grabbed his Poketech and his fingers flew; and the battle unfolded right in front of me. I didn't know what to say or do; Tommy was a king at flinging statuses around. I didn't expect it since he did look like a child -- and most students fought offensively. I knew Bronzor was a defensive Pokemon but the ice didn't seem to hurt them at all. Ice was supposed to be a good offensive types; but unluckily for me, my opponents were both Steel and Water typed. It wasn't good that Alicia fell to sleep and O-me to confusion. Even worse, Alicia was paralyzed and this meant she woudn't be able to move as speedily as before.

"O-me! Alicia! Both of you, get your act together!" I shouted in vain. My words felt strained in the air. The announcer and the audience all but disappeared in my eyes. All I could see where my two Pokemon: O-me, bumping around dizzily and Alicia snoozing while slightly spasming once in a while. It felt hopeless. I yelled again: "O-me, come on! Scatter that Spore on the Bronzor! X-Scissors if you can!"

O-me's eyes seemed to clear up for a while and that made me not want to give up hope.

I stared at Alicia. She was sleeping; but I knew we had a bond. She must realize she had to get up or everything will be over. Her attack wasn't effective. I wished they wouldn't limit her in this battle or she could've done Icy Wind -- that would've attacked both her opponents and lowered their speed. "Double Team, Blizzard!" She didn't manage to do her second Blizzard before; but I hope she managed to do it.
