It was the third time Elizabeth found herself in the League's Championship Stadium. This time was different however. The previous events had been an all out brawl between the most powerful of pokémon. Now was the time of the Little Cup, facing individual trainers and using those of her team who had not yet had so much experience. It would make for an interesting challenge and the girl couldn't help but wonder who her opponent might be.

She waited nervously in the dimly lite tunnel, aimlessly twirling a strand of her brown hair around a finger. Her gray optics watched the current battle played on one of the many screens within the tunnel. Thousands of trainers from all over Opaddeka had come to participate or just watch this unique event. Even though she'd been in front of such crowds before, it was still a bit nerve racking. Still, she'd come a long ways since her last time here, but was she and her youngsters ready for such an event? Three rounds, and with pokémon she'd never battled with before. At least she wasn't completely alone. Her parents had managed to attend this event and were keeping watch over her three usual companions, Tansy her ivysaur, Cecylia her pikachu and Ena her flareon. She was only permitted three pokémon in this event thus had to leave the others in the stands to watch. Liz already missed the weight of Cecylia on her shoulder Tansy's steadfast presence and Ena hyper playfulness which always proved a good distraction.

One hand fiddled with the bright red lanyard around her neck. It didn't quite match the indigo sweater she wore under her denim jacket and blue jeans. The random thought that it might look tacky crossed her mind causing her to momentarily grin. Who cared if a lanyard looked tacky? Well the thought had been distracting enough for her to almost missed the next number called. The thought, Shit that's us, was now the only thing occupying her mind.

After a few deep breaths, Liz stepped out of the tunnel and raised a humble hand to the crowd. Whether they cheered for her or not, she didn't care. She was too busy scanning the stands hoping to catch a glimpse of her family and friends. A flurry of leaves suddenly shot into the air from one section and a vine waved madly to her. A grin broke over her features and she began to feel more relaxed. There they were, front row and all cheering. Well, she'd do her best to make them proud. Liz took her place on the arena floor and unclipped one of the three balls from her belt. Now she only had to wait on her opponent, whoever he or she may be.

The noise as you stepped out was deafening - the prospect of meeting their favourite pro trainers had drawn thousands of people to the stadium. Once you had taken your position at one end of the field, the announcer's voice boomed over the loudspeakers.

"Ladies and Gentlemen! Next up to challenge the pros is a trainer you may recognise from the Grand Melée tournaments. Hailing from Little Hillmoss Town, give it up for Elizabeth Waters!"

The crowd let out an encouraging cheer, and applauded.

"And introducing her first opponent. An exciting young prospect, he's already broken into Opaddeka's top 50. All the way from Aridair, let's hear it for Kyle Mason!"

Across from you stood a confident-looking teenager, who waved to the crowd when they erupted into wild cheers. As per Little Cup rules, Kyle was tasked to release his pokémon first, so he duly obliged.

"Rampage! Arrow! Let's go!"

Flicking two pokéballs into the arena, they both burst, revealing an Onix and a Taillow. They took up position on their half of the arena, and prepared themselves for battle.

The referee situated at the side of the field relayed instructions as to how the battle should progress next. "The challenger may now choose her two pokémon for this round, and may also call out the first commands."

Liz twirled the miniaturized orb between her fingers as she listened to the announcer. A simple introduction for both of them, she didn't feel quite so worried about this opponent now. Still, she couldn't let her guard down. Even though they were fighting with some of their weaker pokémon, this guy hadn't become a so called 'pro' for nothing.

Kyle's battlers were revealed, onix and taillow. Neither was too worrisome. She had an onix of her own and was familiar with the dual rock ground type. Taillow was a very commonly seen bird throughout Opaddeka, not usually too big a challenge. But one couldn't estimate the bird in the hands of a pro.

She held the small ball between her forefinger and mid finger then, after a few moments consideration, plucked a second from her belt. Liz pursed her lips and with a flick of her wrist released the pair. No catch phrase joined the act of releasing; she merely freed her companions. They burst forth with a brilliant red glow, their young bodies taking form on the arena floor. First was the slender, pale blue figure of Avery, her dratini. The snake like dragon raised her head to nearly the girl's own height and gazed steadily at the two in front of her. At her side came the tiny egg like cutie of Nandi, the togepi. He immediately broke into a broad grin then turned and ran back to Liz to tightly hug her leg.

"Nandi, not now silly. It's time to battle." She chuckled and gently shooed the little egg onto the field. Nandi now took the time to look at his surroundings. His little eyes widened considerably and he waved adorably to everyone. Avery glanced down at her partner and giggled as well. She coiled her body protectively around the youngster then returned her gaze to their opponents.

"Focus big brother, we should with this for mother yes?" Avery stated softly to the young togepi. Though bigger than the togepi and not actually related to him, Avery and the other youngsters who saw Liz as 'mother' called one another sibling. Nandi had been born before Avery, thus he was 'big brother', despite his smaller size.

Anyway, Liz cleared her throat to regain the kids' attention. Both youngsters glanced back at her and grinned sheepishly. With more focused looks they prepared themselves to get into this fight. Liz shook her head and thought over her strategy. She narrowed her eyes then nodded to the two on the field.

"Avery, a leer and aqua tail for onix. Nandi try to get taillow with a few ancientpowers. Watch out you two, they'll be coming in fast. Dodge what you can but try to get in your attacks. And don't worry too much if you miss, you'll do fine." She cautioned. The rock snake and blue bird would be quicker on the draw than her pair. She just hoped that their attacks wouldn't do too much damage.

The pair listened closely to their mother's instructions. The two readied themselves watching closely for their opponents' incoming attacks while readying their own. Avery narrowed her eyes and leered seductively at him. Then she slithered forward with surprising grace and speed her tail glowing blue with a watery ripple forming over the surface. She twisted her slender body around to swipe her tail across the onix's body hoping to make solid contact.

Nandi remained where he was still looking as cute and jolly as ever as he summoned up a glowing ball of white energy. His shining eyes locked onto the taillow and he released the energy waiting for only a moment to summon another readying it to launch against the bird as well. Liz could only watch the exchange hoping her pair came out on top. What tactics might the pro use in retaliation?

Rampage rumbled deeply, glaring with narrowed eyes at his opponents as Arrow fluttered around his head, twittering constantly as he darted about. Kyle smiled in satisfaction at seeing his two pokemon on the field, and waited patiently as Elizabeth gave her orders. He did seem to be checking her out while he was waiting, though.

Kyle's order were much more simple. "Take the Dratini first, guys. Like we practised."

The speedy twosome gave a simultaneous nod and went into action. The darting Arrow paused and perched on Rampage's head, closing his eyes and focusing his mind and body to a knife edge. As soon as his passenger took off again, the onix reared up and let out and screeching bellow that nearly knocked Avery over. Despite herself, the dratini shuddered, right before she reared up and leered back at Rampage, causing him to slither back slightly in surprise.

Fun and games were over at that point. Arrow shrieked and dove for Avery, his form turning into a blur of colour as he shot past her, ripping through her skin with his beak and talons. She reeled from the Aerial Ace as the little bird darted out of reach, and barely had time to recover before Rampage whipped his tail around, the last few stone segments detaching to fly across the field and smash into her side. The stones floated back to reattach, leaving the dragon's crumpled form behind.

Avery was the first casualty of the match, but there was no time to celebrate. Slow and steady Nandi had been forgotten, and Arrow screamed as the energy stones he'd summoned knocked him from the air. He tried to regain his balance and altitude, only for another barrage of Ancientpower to smash him into the ground.

Kyle returned Arrow. "Not bad," he commented idly. With that first exchange, two on two had become one on one. Rampage roared in defiance, furious over the fall of his battle partner, and drew himself to his full height to tower over Nandi. He would prove much harder take down, he promised with his glare.

Liz winced as the pair teamed up against poor Avery. She couldn't do much but watch her young dragon get pummeled. Yet it had taken both of them to take her down and they seemed to have completely forgotten about Nandi. The trainer couldn't help but grin a little as Nandi took out the bird rather easily all on his own. One on one now, still, Nandi didn't look like much compared to the monster that was Onix.

She would have to play it safe now. Onix's defenses were lowered, but it would still take a lot to bring the snake down. Quietly she recalled her fallen dragon and whispered softly to the ball before setting it in its place at her hip. This gave her a moment to think over their new strategy. She smirked a little at Nandi who was at first confused as to what had happened to his little sister. He seemed to shrug it off then looked back up at the onix, way, way up. He let out a happy trill and bounced in a circle having no fear of the giant snake. Nandi was rarely afraid of much, plus it helped that this wasn't the first onix he'd seen.

"Nandi hun, focus now. Why don't you show onix how nice you are and blow him a little kiss and show off your charming self?" Liz winked at the togepi then flicked her cool gray gaze to that of Kyle. Onix was easily faster than Nandi but they weren't known to have the greatest attack, their strength lied in defense. She hoped the little togepi would be able to survive a hit, as long as the beast didn't know much more than his natural abilities.

Nandi stared open mouthed at Liz for a minute. He gave a cute baby giggle then turned and blew onix a sweet little kiss. He followed this with the cutest, most charming look he could muster in hopes of lowering the onix's attack prowess.

Kyle looked at the Togepi, and listened to your orders. Being a pro, he was intimately familiar with the potential threat posed by your remaining pokémon, and he took a second or two to figure out the best course of action. Eventually, he settled on the aggressive option.

"Time to turn up the offense, Rampage."

The Onix rumbled his approval, and readied his colossal tail. Nandi was nowhere near quick enough to react first, and so was powerless to stop Rampage from flinging rock shards from his tail with considerable force. It was only the rock snake's poor offensive capabilities that saved Nandi, but the little Togepi would certainly have felt the crushing blow.

However, Rampage ended up being quite shocked when instead of retaliating with violence, the Togepi... kissed him. Why on earth would the little egg critter do such a thing, right in the middle of a battle? It made no sense. The shock of it all was enough for Rampage to lapse into a state of confusion, and he ended up smacking himself on the head with his tail in an attempt to clear his mind. It didn't work.

Nandi finished the round by turning on the charm, compounding Rampage's problems by making him hesitant to use his full strength against such an adorable thing.

Kyle was quietly impressed. This opponent played to her pokémon's strengths, and made a Togepi slightly worrying. Perhaps there was an upset on the cards?

"Well done Nandi. Hang in there, you can do it!" Liz called softly to the young pokémon. Nandi turned and waved his little arms quite pleased with himself. The onix had hurt him with the weird little rocks but now he seemed quite confused about things, how funny!

"Why don't you show him what your daddy taught you?" She suggested with a playful grin. She hoped that the confusion would dampen the onix's ability to get in a solid attack ahead of the little togepi and even if he did that it won't be too damaging.

Nandi blinked at his mother for a minute then a look of understanding appeared on the youngster's face. With a happy trill he turned and tilted his head to gaze up once more at the confused snake. He gently swung his little hands side to side until they began to glow a brilliant pink. He closed his eyes and focused on the confused thoughts of the great onix.

After a moment, he released a wave of multicolored energy toward him. The motion was repeated again ready to deal a second blow if the first had not finished off the onix.

Kyle didn't look very happy, and you were about to see why. "Knock down it's defenses." He asked of his Onix. The poor confused beast swung about and wavered, trying to focus on its target. It shrieked with rage and Nandi shivered. Resolute though, the togepi swallowed its fear and flung out a wave of energy which ripped into the rock snake's boulder butt like tissue paper. Rampage howled and tackled Nandi, but his strength was too little, he was just barely hanging on. With a determined shove of power, the togepi threw off the other pokemon and he hit the ground rolling.

"We have our winner!" Cried the announcer. "Give a round of applause for Miss Elizabeth Waters and Kyle Mason for a fantastic battle. May the two contenders leave the field for a brief rest before the next battle."

The stands were alive with excitement and cheers and even Kyle was smiling. "Not bad. Not bad at all." He waved and withdrew his Onix, waved again to his fan and then waltzed off the field, not a bit disturbed that his Pro status might be marred by the loss.

"Wow..." Liz whispered to herself and a broad smile stretched over her soft lips as she hurried onto the field and scooped Nandi up into the air.

"You did it Nandi! You're the best!" She hugged the smiling togepi then caught sight of Kyle. Liz blinked then secured Nandi under one arm and saluted the pro. "Thank you for a great battle Kyle." She grinned and gave a wave to the crowd specifically to her cheering parents and pokémon. The young trainer was thrilled at the victory but knew she'd have to be careful.

Liz left the field to see that her young partners were tended too. They'd all need a nice rest before their next battle. She wondered who her next opponent would be. Kyle had been tough and she could only imagine things getting harder from here on in. One battle down, two more to go, but could they survive the next round?

--

The rest really was brief as Liz was soon called back to the arena. Round two was about to begin and she and her three would have to be ready. After composing herself of her previous excitement and trying to keep her nerves calm for this second event, Liz stepped back onto the field. She caught her family's eye and smiled as she took her place in the challenger's box. She rubbed her hands together anxiously as she waited for her next opponent to be revealed. The three warm balls at her hip almost seemed to be trembling in anticipation as well. They could only hope things went as well as the first round.

When you re-entered the arena again, the enthusiasm from the crowd didn't seem to diminish at all. The timetabling of the matches had been to your advantage, especially given that your Pokemon were given enough rest for the next battle, and you had somewhat familiarized yourself with some of the battling strategies that your future opponents would be employing. All those continuous matches must have fed enough fuel for the audience to maintain their spirited exuberance, and you were almost amazed at how much energy the crowd had even after such long periods of battling. Of course, you didn't know if they were the same crowd. But they were certainly part of the same group that celebrated the tournament and the exciting skill-based battles that are coming their way.

'Thank you for the wait, ladies and gentleman. And now, we move on to a more exciting, more action-packed second round where trainers who have proven themselves to be a cut above your average trainer take their second step to the cup! We're getting closer to the elusive Cup, and we're going to witness battles from the cream of the cream of the crop!'

The cheering seemed to have grown, if it could actually be louder than it was already.

'I'm sure we're familiar with the challenger by now! Hailing from Little Hillmoss Town, with an impressive display of skill in both Grand Melee Tournaments and the Little Cup, Round 1.... Elizabeth Waters!'

A tirade of loud screaming drew your attention away from the average exuberant crowd. It seemed that you were earning yourself a few fans already, though would the popularity distract you from the final goal?

'Annnnnd her second opponent. Famous personality from the Poketech Broadcasting Channel, known for her touching touches to her little radio programme and her splendid skill in employing both brawn and brains. Without further ado - I'm sure you ALL know her - let's welcome... DJ Jessica Monroe!'

Who?

The crowd on your right was already going bonkers and screaming intelligible screams. As you looked at her astonishing figure and demure poise, however, you understood why she warranted such cheers. The look on your face told her everything she needed to know, and much as you might want to dismiss this little tidbit, it was rude to look quizzical when someone was introduced as famous.

'I see you don't listen much to radio programmes, miss Waters. On the TV, I mean. Your debut in the Cup is impressive.'

Jessica didn't waste too much time waiting, but simply called out her Pokemon: a Machop and a Mime Jr, with the former flexing his muscle and the latter dancing gracefully in the middle of the field. Brawn and brains, indeed.

'When you're ready, Ms. Waters.'

Liz found herself growing used to the roar of the crowd. It was rapidly becoming background noise and her nervousness was lessened. When her gray eyes fell on the radio host she couldn't help but raise a brow in confusion. Though it had been a long time since she'd bothered to tune into a radio program. Mostly she only used a radio to find a good music station. Wait, radio program on the TV?

"Oh thank you. And I do apologize, it's been sometime since I've listened to a raido or watched much TV." Liz responded politely. Something about her tone grated on the girl's nerves, it almost felt condescending. However, she couldn't allow that to bother her.

The appearance of the fighter and psychic type gave her a moment's pause. Only one of her trio had an ability that would phase that machop but Nandi was a normal type and would easily fall to any of the fighter's attacks. This woman was supposedly quite smart as well as strong. Well they'd have to play it smart as well, and do what they could to remove that strength.

"Right then," she stated as she raised her twin pokéballs and tossed them onto the field. They burst open with the usual flash of red light and spilled two white hot forms onto the sandy floor. After a moment her pair were revealed. Again the slender dragon graced the grounds and was looking much more wary this time. She wouldn't let herself be taken down again so easily. Beside her a young yellow rodent chuu'd and glanced around curiously. Her small cheeks crackled with more electrical energy than she honestly could handle.

"Diya a little tail whip for mime jr and give machop a kiss please," Liz lowered her voice as she gave her instructions. "Avery double aqua tail for mime jr." The pair nodded to one another and Diya turned and waved her little tail cutely at mime jr then turned to Bruce and blew him a kiss. Paralyzing the machop would be a bad idea due to his guts, but that wasn't affected by confusion.

Avery slithered forward rapidly toward the young psychic her tail glowing blue as water whirled about it. She twisted her body to slam the appendage twice upon the dancer. She hoped the hits were strong enough to take the young mime out completely.

Jessica smiled at the reply. It was always nice when an opponent was polite.

She also smiled at the sight of Diya and Avery and the called orders, even as the announcer reminded the crowd of the dratini's part in the previous round. It was also always nice when an opponent gave clear commands that she could understand. Jessica did not usually extend the same courtesy, and she didn't now.

"Bruce, Selena, defense. Set yourselves up."

Selena sprung into action that same moment Diya did. The pichu's eyes went big and she wiggled her little tail appeasingly at her opponents. Both looked momentarily hesitant, but Selena simply clapped her hands and spread them out, forming a psychic barrier in front of her. When Avery slithered forward moments later with her tail coated in water, the little mime sidestepped behind her protection, which slowed and weakened the strike. Selena still was knocked back, and hit the ground with a pained yelp, but it could have been much worse.

Bruce immediately turned his sights on Diya, and her already wide eyes went wider with fear at the scowl his face had twisted into. She squeaked and stumbled backward, but the fighting type did not advance. Instead, Selena clapped her hands again and another barrier, transparent and sparkling, formed around the both of them. It didn't stop Avery's second strike, which was no less painful as the last, but it was the dragon's turn to recoil in terror as Bruce locked eyes with her and sent her desperately slithering backward.

That was around the time Diya got up the courage to blow a little kiss at the terrifying machop, but the barrier around him merely flashed with white light for a second in response and he showed no sign of confusion. Jessica seemed to think that trading in the potential attack boost of Guts for the assurance that Bruce would be able to attack without harming himself was a good deal, and given the state of the field, she may be right.

Your move.

Safeguard, she'd been afraid of that. Liz crackled her knuckles as she began to formulate a plan. She'd been correct about Jessica's intelligence. This battle would be rather lengthy she'd assume. Her best option now would be to try and get at least one of them out of the picture. The obvious target was mime jr though now her defense was heightened. And apparently the machop had fallen to the disarming affects of Diya's tail whip.

Machop would most likely be the easiest to control but at this time also the easiest to remove. Liz tapped her chin as she glanced between the pair. Then switched her gray eyes to her teammates.

"Okay guys, we're going to be in this for the long haul. We'll have to whittle them down as best as we can." She spoke softly to her pair. The rodent and dragon looked back to their trainer and nodded. They returned their gaze to that of their opponents watching warily. Both were a bit slowed up by the machop but they were determined to hang in there.

"Dance for me Avery and finish the mime. Diya, charm your way to that machop's heart." Liz instructed her gaze steady on that of the opposing pair. Her own pair went into action. Avery broke into a graceful dance then twisted her slender body into an attack against the little mime. Diya threw all her energy into charming the machop hoping to bring his attack way down.

And Lo, a great description famine plagued the Little Cup, and so Mod decreed that updates would occur in summary form. And Mod spake, saying,

"Let those with highest speed move first, so that We shall not be held up by artificially slowed pokémon."

And so Selena was the first to attack, and she did smite Diya with a Psychic attack, doing damage of two less than a score.

And then Bruce followed, and he did use a Karate Chop to slay the mighy Pichu. And thus Pichu was unable to battle, and did withdraw from the fight.

Avery did then perform a Dragon Dance, and her speed and attack did both rise by one level, and it was good. And then Mod spake, saying,

"Let those pokémon still battling perform their second attacks of this round, so that We may see who is the stronger trainer."

Thus moved Selena, who did unleash a second Psychic attack at the dragon, dealing damage one short of a score. And Bruce did then capitalise on his speed advantage with another Karate Chop, and Avery did suffer a dozen points of damage.

And so Avery was KO'd, and removed from the battle. Then Mod spake, saying,

"Both of Liz's pokémon are unable to battle. Jessica Monroe is the winner!"

And so ended Liz's participation in the Little Cup. She had defeated one pro in this tournament, and that would have to do.

Alas the reduction in speed had hindered their progress any further in this tournament. With a disheartened sigh, Liz recalled her fallen comrades and spoke soft words of encouragement to their unconscious forms nestled within the red and white spheres. At least they'd lasted through one round. Perhaps next time they'd fair better.

The young woman drew herself up, hiding away her disappointment and saluted her opponent. The radio star had outsmarted her, this time. If ever they met again, things would be very different. In true military fashion, Liz turned on her heel, gave a small wave in the direction of her family, then strode with confident steps from the arena. She knew they'd done their best and that was all they could do. Her family and teammates would be proud, which was more than she could ask for.

After seeing to her fallen youngsters, she joined her family and pokémon friends in the stands to see the outcome of this event.
