This time the karate master could walk freely. Of course, it was going to be a little bit of a pain through all this fog, but he'd done it about three times before that he knew exactly what he was doing. With an easy plan in mind, Elijah summoned out not one or two of his team, but five; the mass grouping acted as a particularly efficient deterrent to Pokémon. With all of them around he could probably try and lay the smackdown on anything that came out of the fog to attack. None would dare to attack such a powerful group when they were all so clustered around their human.

First came Furioso the Blaziken and Terashi the Lucario; the two fighters would serve as efficient point-guards as Elijah and company walked along through the mud and haze. Terashi most so, for his sensing powers via Aura would alert him to any incoming threats, scanning the area like a radar sweep. Beside him, to his left, was Remilia the Manectric. She was sniffing out any potential foes with her powerful nose and was ready to bite something. In fact she wanted to. To Eli's right was the as-of-yet unnamed Flygon, who was currently kind of wary about his trainer. This was understandable; they hadn't exactly bonded yet, and on the way back Elijah intended to change this. Finally, in is arms was the Starmie, Anima. It, too, was acting like a search beacon, assisting Terashi's efforts.

Together, the five walked on in relative silence. They didn't want to disturb anything out here, and their sensory powers would alert them to basically everything that happened. Should something get through, it'd be dealt with. For the most part, all of them were tired and just wanting a serious home-cooked hot meal courtesy of Elijah. He, too, was looking for a shower and a bed to collapse in. First they had to get to the dojo, though.

Lights bounced ahead whirling and spinning lighting up a small patch of the fog. They were almost imperceivable specks of light floating mysteriously ahead like two beacons calling out to travelers hoping to lead them astray.

Judging from their aura Terashi believed them to really just be a pair of bugs. Their glow was still a bit off putting as there was little sound coming from ahead. The fog acted like a barrier blocking even the buzz of their wings.

As the group drew closer one could almost make out the insects's shapes. The mixture of blues, reds, grays and purples confirmed Terashi's suspicions. 'Twas a Volbeat and an Illumise. Seemed they were right in the middle of a courtship dance. The love bugs didn't seem to notice the large group of pumped up fighters as they were much too involved with one another. It should be easy to walk on by if they held no interest to the travelers.

Well wasn't this sight particularly strange. The fog had acted as a mask for the two mating creatures and Elijah, once stumbling across them, certainly did not want to interrupt. Neither did the Pokémon who were there, waiting with Elijah, and remembering that most of them had been in that kind of situation too. No matter. They'd move on.

"Come on, guys," Elijah said as quietly as he could, and the entourage went out of their way to skirt past the two flying bugs as they buzzed through the air in a romntic dance that actually even made Elijah wish he had someone special. Things were getting kinda lonely, and he was getting older. He hadn't had a relationship in... well, a long time, and this was getting kinda depressing to be alone.

However, if Elijah wanted to get home in any kind of good time, he just had to focus. Hadn't he done this before? Yeah? That'd make his job easier if he actually got to walking. So, all things done, he worked all the way around the bugs and moved through the fog. His five critters were still staying sharp, but if he was lucky, he could get a straight run home.

The light of the dancing bugs faded behind the group as they continued their march. Silence pressed in around them and the fog seemed into their skin. The marshes were cool enough as it was without the dampness in the air. There was nothing of significance ahead or behind. It was as if they were utterly alone here.

One couldn't be sure when it happened but the group had already crossed almost half way through the sinklands. Still, the fog here wasn't any less thick than in the marsh behind them. The very ground seemed to grab at their feet trying to suck them down. It was a most miserable place.

Not too much farther to go though, surely they would all be out of this infernal muck soon see the light of day.

Considering the mushiness under his feet had just all of a sudden increased, and there was a generally dirtier feel to the ground below him, Elijah reckoned he'd just entered the Sinklands. He'd encountered this when he was riding upon Epona, Celebi bless her, sprinting back to Rose Town after his little trip with Guardian. This had been a crazy point in time, but it was nevertheless gone and a valuable experience for this trip.

Even Elijah's Pokémon were starting to complain a little. There was a lot of mud. A lot of it! They normally didn't have to deal with so much of it but this time they were and the furry ones were starting to complain about all the crap on their feet. It was dirty and thick and sticking to their feet and in Remilia's case, 'totally ew'. She was chill but the barking she was emitting eventually became Roars, such that anything that was to try and approach would probably start fleeing in freaking fear of the psychosis.

Elijah would have covered his ears, but he was carrying a Starmie. Boo.

Either way, they had no choice but to walk on. Hopefully all this freakin' mud would go away soon and they could all go home to a nice hot shower to clean it off. All the more reason to get there faster, huh?

Knowledge of the terrain was always of unmeasurable value. Knowing where you are headed and how to get there was essential for the goal-oriented, the nicest way to describe Elijah. But sometimes no amount of preparation or planning can overcome thick, slippery mud. Everyone but Starmie, grateful for being carried, teetered precariously on the edge of comical slap-stick sliding and falling.

Remilia was anything but subtle, her displeasure roundly expressed in groaning barks. Even her trainer was pained, and if not for the massive gemmed sea-star in his hands would have gladly blocked out his ears. Few Pokemon in the Murmur Valley felt so self-assured as to approach the traveling band of moaning marauders. And yet up ahead, some short black figure, indistinguishable in the thick fog, didn't move.

At first you passed it off as a rock, and it was a probably a fair assumption. It certainly looked like it, and only a few kinds of rocks would run off in fear. It wasn't until you were right on top of it that it was clearly not.

It was an elderly man, calmly sitting cross-legged in a circle of mud. Shirtless, his body was battered and bruised, the faded memories of some distant conflict. He was utterly unperturbed by Remilia's beleaguered bellows.

Interesting.

And so they walked.

The thing in the mud-puddle? It was of no interest to Elijah and his team; its immobile status, and its lack of interaction meant that Elijah would very clearly walk right past it without giving a flip. They had bigger concerns on their mind, one such being the Zangoose that Elijah had in its Great Ball resting at his side.

It was the only one of his team that he'd left shackled and the only one he was at all reluctant to summon out of its shell. After all, he would not deal with it until he had a team who could subdue it at will at his side; that meant getting back to the Dojo in order to have his masters and allies be able to hold it back with a wide array of attacks instantly. It was a difficult call to have to make, but nonetheless Elijah would make it despite all the inherent difficulties involved.

Either way? The team kept their trek going. No matter what it was in their way, they kept going. Their trek meant that they had progress to make and they'd be getting through everything quickly. He had people to teach, training to work on! There was too much at stake to simply be wandering around here with no real aim.

The mud built up in his shoes and Elijah cursed quietly, knowing that at this rate he'd have to take them off or something. Or, maybe, clean them when they were out of this insufferable fog.

...

So anyway, the group passed the strange battered thing in the muck and kept on going. Whatever it was wasn't worth wasting time on. They were fortunate enough not to incur the wrath of any of the sinkland dwellers. It was doubtful much wanted to mess with the powerful creatures that guarded the human. Blaziken and Lucario were not the sort of pokémon one wanted to mess with. Heck the Flygon, Starmie and hyped up Mantric were pretty threatening too.

The group trudged along with muck clinging to their feet and spirits low. How much farther to get out of this fog? Well there was some good news and bad news. Bad news first, Furioso's foot decided to suddenly sink about three feet into the ground. Good news? They'd just managed to cross over into more unclearable foggy marshes.

Almost there, but- damnit! Furi'd managed to get himself stuck in a puddle of mud. Stupid ground;. It had to stop being so... sink-y. Sinking was bad, because that meant more time wasted screwin' 'round in this bit of the world and less time being able to move on towards Rose Town! Elijah was not pleased with this turn of events.

For a few moments he contemplated how to get Furioso out. Like, fire wouldn't be good. That'd just heat the mud, solidify it, and make it even harder. Water, maybe? Water'd do a real nice trick. Keep it wet, prevent it from hardening, then extract the leg and run like hell. Totally solid plan right there, and Elijah even started to speak the order.

Then Terashi turned around and told Elijah that it was a stupid idea.

That's a stupid idea, the Lucario said. So matter of fact. Recall him.

...Derp.

So Elijah, taking the cheap way out, recalled Furioso to his Poké Ball and promised the poor critter first shower dibs on the way home. Then they kept walking. Cheap? Yes, but nobody ever said it couldn't be cheap, it just had to work. And the shower dibs were a serious part of this plan.

And so Elijah trudged on, through the sticky, thick, viscous, grimy, mucky, unclearably foggy marsh. The fog grew thicker in patches and disappeared in others, giving the trainer glimpses of jungle green grass and deep pools of brown mud. The weather was warm, though, and Elijah was nearing closer to home, so the passing of an hour or two in the thick fog may not have been as dreadful as all that.

Eventually the mud climbed higher on Elijah's legs. He'd stepped in a shallow pool of muck that swelled around his ankles. It was brown and purple and covered in sludge; it looked like it was trying to swallow him before he even stepped further. It must have felt heavy draped around Elijah's shoes as it tried to suck him down, but it quickly melted off and disappeared back into the marsh.

The fog blanketed everything so heavily that it was hard to say what was grass and what was ocean. The only thing obvious was how bad this place smelled. Suddenly Elijah et al. were hit with a waft of what had to be compost at best, defecation at worst, and the marsh rose up in a dark-colored wave to swallow its prey.

...Then it saw the Lucario. And the Starmie. The wave hung stupidly in the air for a minute, as if trying to make a decision, then ultimately crashed towards Elijah.

Oh Arceus what the hell was that on his feet.

Elijah had slimy mud and stuff all climbing up his leg, and he wasn't entirely sure what it was. What tipped him off to the fact that there was something going on, however, was the fact that it was climbing up his leg. This was in fact not a normal response, which confused and slightly worried the karate-ka. He didn't want to have to deal with some crazy slimy goo again. What was it about this place and unbelievable amounts of disgusting crap?

That was when, all of a sudden, Remilia barked about something, and Elijah looked. There was a bad stink, and a big wave - the Manectric's immediate reaction was ro roar, loud. Whatever that thing was, it was alive, and if it was alive it could fear. Inspiring fear into the opponent to make it flee was one of the thunderpuppy's favourite tricks, and that she did. If it would turn around and leave them alone, all good. Elijah couldn't afford any more interruptions.

If not? A wall of three formed themselves in front of the trainer, the Starmie leaping from his grasp and forming itself in the middle of the barricade, Terashi to its left and Remilia to its right. Then, as one, they could all strike, unleashing some of their signature techniques in a furious barrage of attacks that, combined, would undoubtedly cow this swampy creature and allow them to progress onwards. They did, after all, need to get home soon.

Roar would totally work, theoretically, but -- exercise is good!

Terashi bolted forward and started smashing the muk's face with a club before Remilia could roar. Two times, three times, four times, FIVE TIMES Terashi bashed down at the enemy muk. Then he struck again with Extremespeed. Remilia wasn't slow to act either: having reverted to Plan B, she lunged with her fangs exposed and bit deep into the toxic pokémon. Remilia's fangs sent jolts of electricity through the muk's nerves and paralyzed it, turning its consistency into something like salt-water taffy. It was hard, and chewy, and not altogether unpleasant.

Remilia didn't have time to ponder. She bounced back and cleared the way for Anima to lay waste to the sludge pokémon. Bubblebeam hit the paralyzed (did I say caramelized?) muk square-on and the starmie wasn't letting up. Finally, and with a flourish, Anima gyro ball'd the gunk to death.

Muk weighs 66.1 lbs (33.0 kgs); how much does Gyro Ball do?

Answer: INSTANT DEATH

Rel, I imagine you may have made the fix yourself (at least I hope you did), but in that last battle, each of your Pokémon gain 0.3 :exp not 0.9

Math:

(Lucario+Manetric+Starmie)/3
(50+48+53)/3 = 50.333~

Muk/Average victorious Pokemon
43/50.333~ = .85blahblahblah :exp (rounded up to 0.9)

Then we must divide that amount by 3 because there are 3 Pokémon sharing that amount of experience. So: 0.3 :exp each Jin, take note of that, it's also explained in the rules as well as here.

BUT!!! That's the long way to do it, mathematically. There has been a STARTLING DISCOVERY to help make figuring out EXP in a multi-Pokemon battle easier. And truly it works!

The equation is as such:

Defeated Pokémon's Level / Victorious Pokémons' Total Level Sum

Example:

43/(50+48+53)
43/151 = 0.28476821192052980132450331125828 or 0.3

Comparatively:

43/50.333~ = 0.85430463576158940397350993377489
^That divided by 3 = 0.2847682119205298013245033112583 or 0.3

The final answers are only a couple quadrillionths off.
