Jin awoke in the gulley in the middle of the night. Tyler was laying next to him, indecent with his black briefs hugging his thin waist, chest bare in the privacy of the collapsible tent. Abdel Aziz came inside the tent while the boys were sleeping. Piplup was locked away in his pokéball. Lazily Jin put an arm around Tyler and just as lazily pulled away. He crawled out of the tent and peered into the darkness.

The gully was silent. Eventually Tyler stirred and called for Jin to come back to bed. It was a hard offer to turn down.

Morning came a few hours later. Jin was anxious to keep moving. He kissed Tyler on the cheek and told him he’d see him around, that he needed to find Duke. He didn’t know where to go but he left, squeezing his new friend’s ass on his way out, decidedly not looking back.

Jin was hungry. He hadn’t eaten at all the previous day and his empty stomach churned as it tried to digest itself. Jin felt weak, light-headed. Not for the first time he didn’t have a direction to follow.

The sun was still low on its perch in the sky and the whole of Jin’s earth was bathed in a glassy white fog, soft and gold enough to intimate fall. Jin felt the melancholia burrowing its way into his chest and he tried to shrug it off but it was everywhere, already in his head and in his heart and he felt heavy as he trudged along.

Trainers were rushing past him. It was earlier than Jin remembered being awake in years but trainers were everywhere, their bright and cheery-eyed faces hovering disembodied amidst the four-foot grass. Some of them were barely four feet tall themselves and their little faces rolled around like dodgeballs. Jin shut his eyes in frustrated defiance. Abdel Aziz was trailing behind him but when Jin stopped Abdel Aziz kept moving, suddenly disappearing into the tall grasses.

Jin sighed and stepped forward. His eyes were still shut but he felt the grass tickling his forearms. He immersed himself in it, eyes still shut, listlessly striving forward until the gully was sure to have vanished behind him. His entire world now was this field of overgrown weeds. He sat down and lost himself in it.

He stayed that way for half an hour, meditating.

Abdel Aziz was gone now. In the back of his mind and in his heart of hearts Jin trusted the shroomish to protect himself. The failed trainer imagined himself to be a pokémon then and a shudder rippled through his back. He opened his eyes: nothing but olive green grass tickling his nostrils. Silent life was creeping all around him. He wondered what it would be like to be constantly hunted.

Privilege overwhelmed him. His thoughts were scattered, unproductive, deleterious. He centered his mind.

Arms fell to his sides and became intertwined with the grass. Spine became straight, rigid, and slowly Jin lowered his back to fall flat against the earth. Legs, too, stretched out underneath him and gradually Jin felt himself vanish.

Silence. Mind and physical stillness were key to the art of meditation, where things became totally relaxed such that the body and its associated mentality could not be disturbed from the trance and be broken. No, the mind would understand all things that transpired around. Every motion of the air, every change of air pressure that may have indicated a presence.

It was not a change in the air but the soft tickling of fur on your skin, the little fuzzy feel of a creature that wasn't entirely sure of where it was or what it was doing. In fact, the gentle pawing against your arm was one of confusion as the creature examined the object before it. Whatever it was, the critter was unsure. It had never seen something like this. Whatever it was, this thing was examining. Curiosity killed the cat.

Or, more accurate, you would kill the cat, if you so chose.

What was this now? You were trying to touch him! Nobody touched him! You'd mess up his beautiful fur! He could touch but you couldn't. That was the last straw and with a growl Meowth attacked.

His fangs bit deep into your hand causing blood to gush from the wound. Then in a frenzy he launched his body at your face claws extended. A few slashes cut across the tender skin of your face. Then he just stopped as if satisfied his point had been made.

Gracefully he leapt away and sat down to stare at you while he began to groom himself. Where you going to let him get away with that? You who had let all your pokémon wander off? The meowth didn't seem to care one way or the other. You had tried to touch him and you had paid for it. If you continued your advances you'd continue to pay for it.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?"

Jin snapped out of his trance. That voice - Tyler? Again? Jin furrowed his brows.

"I'm --"

"You're bleeding, man. Your face is covered in blood. You're clearly not okay." Tyler sounded almost annoyed.

"There was a cat -- it attacked me -- " Jin's eyes were elsewhere. Blood was still trickling down his fingertips and onto the side of his jeans. His face and his hand were stinging incessantly.

"Come on - Lorenzo town is right there." Tyler took Jin's hand and led him forward. Jin's thoughts lingered on Duke.

Landmark: 6 Foot Grass 1 - Flower Meadow

The snow was falling hard now. Fast, and in thick white puffs that practically fell like stones to the earth. Jin was freezing when he shoved through the thick, tall grasses of Lorenzo and forced his way west. Abdel Aziz was planted firmly on Jin's shoulder and his eyes were closed.

Jin was going to the flower meadow. Every time he closed his eyes he saw a meadow covered in snow and he saw the red outline of Duke, the Charmeleon. It had only been three days since he'd last seen Duke but it felt like a lifetime; the worry and the wonder of their separation weighed on Jin even now.

The sky was white with snow and clouds and it blinded Jin when he looked up; but the grasses were taller than he was and when he looked ahead he saw nothing but green. He swept aside the curtains of grass with an outstretched forearm. In his mind he saw a field of white - a clearing, covered in snow - and the dark red tail that was Duke's...

The journey west was not a quick one. The white sky took on deep hues of night, and Jin's jacket was little help against the sharpening cold. He crossed his arms and shivered but pushed through the grasses with his shoulder. Abdel Aziz remained silent but tightened his grip. Jin continued on sideways, anxiously avoiding pokémon at his feet, wondering now why he didn't save his money for warmer shoes.

Finally Jin felt himself getting closer. His heart was beating without rhythm and every time he swept apart the grasses he thought he'd see Duke. Eventually he pushed the grass open and he stumbled into the flower meadow - and was surprised to find himself in a field of waist-high grasses, dotted with bursts of purple and red flowers.

The flower meadow was not covered in snow. Flowers reached up for the golden sunlight without reservation; and they soaked it up, having grown a foot in diameter in some instances. Gorgeous assortments of purple and red and white striped the magical field. Jin looked around him and felt himself suddenly at home. A deep sense of relief washed over him, as if, after a long and tiring travel, he had returned home and could finally go to bed. The comfort of dreams was promising. And his nightmares, which had all centered around Duke, would finally end.

Despite the beauty of the day, the pall that undoubtedly hung over an anxious and worry-filled mind made that otherwise picturesque scene just a little less beauteous. Then, as time changed and the day sank into the darkest depths of night, it became worse. The pall took on a palpable texture of fear and dread. It would be no easy ride for anyone who wished to walk through the grasses.

As most are wont to do, many creatures slept at night. Why not? It was the best time to sleep, for very few Pokémon were nocturnal. So saying the trip was... quiet was an understatement. In fact, it was near on silent; the most noises that could be heard around the place were the chirrupings of your own Pokémon. After all, the saying that 'finding Pokémon in tall grass' didn't mean the same thing here. Here, fighting a Pokémon in tall grass was life or death - especially for the wild creatures. You could get lost and receive no help for none would ever see you. Many stayed silent here.

However, it was all a momentary distraction from that which you wanted to achieve - walking into the flower meadow. And, with one final clump of grass being pushed aside, you managed to get there, safe and sound. But what terrors would the nightmare hold?

Reached: Flower Meadow.

"There you are," I said, when I finally saw Duke.

He looked like a dark red totem pole standing in the middle of the field. I was scared, a little, because he was bigger and darker and I didn't know if he'd remember me, but suddenly he opened his eyes and everything changed.

We kept walking West, after that. I remember it being really dark out, but warm. It was a full moon, I think.

Well, not a full moon, but pretty close. Waxing Full. Gibbous. Fairly bright, was the point.

Unfortunately, not bright enough - there were clouds out tonight, and while they didn't hide the moon too often, they were playing havoc with your ability to see any appreciable distance ahead, and in the waist-high grass of the flower meadow, that meant you were basically having to stumble in roughly the right direction. The pokemon were, however, not out in force. There weren't many nocturnal pokemon out here in the grasslands, after all. All in all it was a fairly straightforward trip...

Apart from the pitfalls, of course.

You put out a foot, pushing through the grass to place it on the ground, only to find thin air. Thrown off balance, you topple forwards falling through the darkness to land with a painful "thump!" on the ground.

Oh dear. Stuck in a large hole, in the middle of the night. How to get out of this one?

Before Jin knew it, the night had become impossibly dark. He couldn’t see his own outstretched hands groping the nothingness around him. He shut his eyes for comparison, but the world was equally dark whether his eyes were open or closed. Every step gave him the feeling of being weightless; in this new blind environment, he could never be sure that his feet would make contact with solid ground. Up, down, front and back, all these notions blended into imaginary perceptions as he stumbled onwards, reluctant to break the all-penetrating silence with even the sound of his own footsteps.

The dreadful realization was in knowing that Duke’s tail flame was nowhere in sight. Minutes earlier he’d been guided by the flickering red and gold of the Charmeleon’s light, and the pale silver glow of the moon, but somewhere between then and now all the lights had gone out and Jin found himself swimming through an ocean of blackness. Though Duke’s name pressed against the corners of his mouth Jin didn’t let out so much as a whisper. The silence felt palpable as it wrapped itself around him, and he was either too cautious or too terrified to break it. And besides, his mind rattled, Duke was a mute. Jin’s heart felt cold as he took another tentative step.

He was almost expecting the fall that came next: the lack of ground for his foot to find its bearings, the sudden shift of weight as gravity sucked him downwards, the rushing in his gut and through his spine as he tumbled silently through the darkness. Even as he fell he saw nothing in any direction, but his hands scrambled and clawed at the earth for one brief second before they, too, lost their place and his entire body plummeted down a cavernous pitfall. Air rushed past his ears, and his eyes tried desperately to penetrate the blackness, but his body was spinning and he couldn’t be sure whether he was falling up or down.

A second later the silence was shattered with a loud, crackling “THUMP”. There was the slight cracking of bone, too, that emerged from Jin’s skull and ran like lightning over the hard bedrock, echoing up to the sky before disappearing into the fathomless depth of the night. Jin could only barely process the pain because his eyes were closing against his will, and even though he’d collided against a boulder of marble he felt himself continue to fall, down, down through the earth, into the impossible blackness, warm space and gravity embracing him as he tumbled ever deeper…

The sensation was incredible. Falling, perpetually, with no light above and nothing below. Until – a glimmer of red and gold light teased at his consciousness. It looked like a small red firefly, too far below him to make out clearly and falling just as fast. The notion of catching up with Duke brought spirit back into Jin's eyes, but falling down an endless pit left him with few options other than to wait. And so he fixed his eyes on the little red light ahead of him, willing himself to reach it as he waited for this journey down the rabbit hole to come to an end.

Whatever was giving Jin the sensation of falling, well, it wasn't reality. He was very normally sprawled out at the bottom of an earthy pit, and whatever his mind was doing to him was his own business.

But his fall into the pit seemed to have attracted some attention. And since I have no idea what's going on with your charmeleon. A single pokemon of the grasslands came out of the tall grass and peered down into the hole, little spores falling from its mushroomed head.

'cause Jin obviously needs more mushrooms in his life, yeah. Not like it looked like any mushroom Jin had ever seen before, but...

Maybe it was curious, maybe it wanted to help, but for now it was just staring. With how big its head was, hopefully it didn't fall in too.

"Is he dead? Let's eat him."

"He isn't dead."

"Are you sure? Let's eat him anyway."

Two mushrooms were planted around the edge of a small pit, peering into the dark hole to see what had fallen in. A human boy lay apparently unconscious at the bottom. There was a hint of blood in his hair and on the earth beneath him and he hadn't moved in over an hour, but occasionally his tightly shut eyes would flicker as in a dream and so the second mushroom determined he was still alive. The other mushroom was hungry and didn't care much for humans.

"I'm going down there. I bet he tastes better than grass."

"No, wait."

"What's wrong? Afraid he'll wake up? I can make him sleep."

The shorter of the two mushrooms unplanted himself from the hard dry earth and began hopping steadily down the slope of the pitfall; the other, larger in size but younger, anxiously trailed behind. They stopped when they reached the bottom of the pit and suctioned themselves over the marble bedrock. They paused to examine the enormous, breathing creature sprawled out before them.

"Huge, isn't he?" the shorter mushroom whistled. Even though he was speaking a language of low hums, barely audible to humans, he whispered in the presence of the unconscious boy. "I bet he'd take years to decompose."

The other mushroom said nothing. He stared intently at the boy's bruised face with a troubled frown. Occasionally he let his round green body rise and fall in the same slow, heavy rhythm as the human boy's expanding chest. The shorter mushroom watched on, glancing first at the human and then at his fellow fungus. He repeated this process a few times.

"I'm Stanley the Fifth, by the way. They call me 'foongus.'" Then, contorting his mouth, he mimicked the human tongue: "'Foong - us.'" His red and white cap rocked back and forth; Stanley V was clearly amused with himself. "You can call me Stan. What's your name?"

The larger mushroom hesitated. He knew how the sleeping human in front of him would have said it, but the foreign syllables were hard to translate into the low hums and chirps of the earth. "Abd. Ill. Aziz. Abdul Aziz." Neither could he keep from dancing at the sound of his own name.

"That's a weird name," whispered Stanley V. "Where'd you get that?"

All of Abdel Aziz's tiny limbs pointed suddenly and obviously at the human lying before them. For a mere moment the corners of Abdel Aziz's perpetual frown hinted at a smile. Stanley V jerked backwards in shock.

"You know this guy? Why didn't you say so!?"

The human boy let out a sudden groan. His eyes were still closed but they were moving rapidly now, the pupils pressing against the eyelids in jerky, uncontrolled movements at an alarming rate. Abdel Aziz moved instinctively closer; Stanley V hopped instinctively further away. "What's wrong with him?" Stanley asked. Abdel Aziz stayed characteristically silent. The boy's face suggested pain, but beyond that were deep lines of struggle: something was clearly going wrong. In the darkness of the night neither mushroom saw the moonlit shadow of a bird circling over them. The human's body was writhing in agony and the hungry bird was diving towards its prey...

Abdel Aziz let out a warning cry and released a cloud of paralyzing spores from the top of his head. Stanley V, at the same time, received the warning and began growing to twice his normal size.... The owl pokemon dove down and pecked at the mushroom's stem, but it was taken aback by the sudden burst of growth and leapt into the sky for another strike... But the air was filled with toxins now, green and yellow spores filling the small pit like a cloud of poison, and the hoothoot couldn't keep from breathing them in. Its mind and body were clouded at once and though it tried to beat its wings its brain refused to function and it collided against the sloped wall of the pit, falling in a crumpled heap somewhere behind Stanley. The mushroom quickly hopped on to the human's stomach and jumped to the other side, placing as much distance between himself and the sleeping, paralyzed owl as possible. Abdel Aziz stood trembling between the human's waist and his fingers. Both human and mushroom gradually felt their heartbeats to return to normal.

Heavy drops of rain fell from the sky and landed with loud splashes against the marble floor of the pit. One drop hit the boy square in the forehead and his features began to soften. Another landed on his bottom lip, and the mushrooms watched as his tongue reached out to taste it. His eyelids began to flutter as the rain fell more heavily from the sky, and even the incapacitated hoothoot managed to ruffle a feather under the refreshing shower. The human took a sudden deep breath, then opened his eyes all together: and the mushrooms were amazed by the light that came from his eyes, then faded as his pupils adjusted to the blackness of the night. He felt the back of his head with his palm, then looked around at both mushrooms, then rose to his feet and lifted his head to the sky.

"Abdel Aziz," the human started. His voice was shaky, as though he were frightened by the sound. "I had a terrible dream. You were there, and - " he stared down at the foongus. Again he raised his glance to the ledge of the pitfall. "Where's Duke?"

Breathing heavily, he lifted himself up and over the side of the evil hole. "Let's go," he urged the mushrooms, paying no mind to the crumpled hoothoot still paralyzed at the bottom of the pit. "To Lake Halo."

((Incidentally, you shouldn't whip up sudden pokemon encounters out of thin air with no rhyme or reason, or with confusing resolutions that render the entire encounter pointless. That's the Moderators job :p))

So, after that... odd interlude, things are pretty much plain sailing from there. The moon comes out again, and you can see far enough ahead to pick up your pace and catch up to Duke, who hadn't even realised you weren't there until you caught up. The Foongus lost interest after if was clear that you weren't going to be compost any time soon, and so by the time you come in view of the shining lights of Felcrest, peeping out from between the trees of the Steamswamp Jungle, there's nothing stopping you from reaching the pokemon center. You're probably due for a rest by now, right?
