It was warm and dark, my eyes could see nothing, but I knew I was safe. Sounds came from outside, voices of unknown creatures. I did not know what awaited me out there, but I was eager to find out. Many days had passed since I first became aware. I could sense everything outside, when I was lifted, when it was cool or warm, and of course when those nearby spoke.

As I listened I was able to learn who was outside. One voice stood out among the others, one I was certain was mother's. It was a nice voice, gentle and kind with a subdued strength about it. I would like very much to meet the owner of this voice. Soon, soon I would be released from the safety of the darkness and be out there, with them. I am not afraid like some. I know the others will keep me safe, as safe as I could ever been in here.

Change came, I could feel it. I had grown much and now it was time to shed this shell. I would be with the others soon.

I slept peacefully, curled on the downy pillow. Dreams from the nights before played in my head. It had only been a day or so since I had been born and what a joyous day it was. Mother, or Liz, was everything I had hoped she would be. The others were just as nice and I even had a sibling! Well not a true sibling, Ena was an eevee, and had been born moments before me, but she was as good as a sister. We were even sleeping together, with me wrapped around her fuzzy body. Ena seems so small compared to me. I hadn't realized how much I'd grown in the dark.

I felt a gentle nudge and blinked open one eye to peer into the face of a pikachu. What was her name? Oh yes Cecylia, one of mother's favorites. Her dark eyes hold no shine to them; I knew she was different just by that. Mother had told me she was blind, which meant she couldn't see, not like I and Ena could. She saw with her other senses, she'd said. I yawned and shook my slender head before speaking.

"Morning already Miss Cecylia?" I questioned sleepily. She nodded while she began to rouse my slumbering sister.

"Yes dear, time to get up. Liz wants you to meet some friends! She left them here while she went to shopping." The pikachu pointed in the general direction of two other youngsters at the end of the bed. My eyes widened, they were quite unusual. What were they? One was a small pink creature with a long tail, four paws and whiskers. He looked a little like Ena but different. The other one looked like a weird egg that hadn't shed all its shell.

Ena was awake now and stared just as wide eyed at the strangers. Both of them stared back. Cecylia giggled and I could hear the familiar chuckle of the flowered one. I extended my long body to peer down the side of the bed. An ivysaur if I remembered right, Tansy, mother's cherished one. She waved one of those vine things at me. I returned the wave with the end of my body, well my tail, even though it was really just an extension of my slender body.

"Ahem. Ena, Avery, this is Nandi the togepi and Spirit the skitty. Boys meet our newest additions to the family." Cecylia cleared her throat and introduced us. So they were a skitty and a togepi, not that I really knew what that meant. I supposed it was like how Cecylia was a pikachu, I was a dratini, Tansy was an ivysaur and Ena was an eevee. Oh and they were both boys, that reminded me of that big fellow mother had with her when I first hatched; he was certainly a handsome creature.

"Hello! It's nice to meet you two. Want to play?" Spirit spoke up first; he seemed like an outgoing sort. Ena jumped up from the pillow and nodded.

"Oh yes! We can play tag!" Ena giggled happily as she pounced on the cat then darted off the bed. I watched my crazy sister. She and the skitty thing seemed to have similar personalities. Spirit was stunned a moment but then chased after her. I could see them running in circles down on the floor.

The togepi, Nandi, walked over with a large grin on his face and clapped his little hands. I leaned forward to inspect him closer still confused as to why he was stuck in his shell and curious as to what he looked like underneath.

"Hi-hi! I'm Nandi! Isn't it a lovely day?" He beamed at me with pure joy. I couldn't help but return the smile. He was definitely a sunny sort. I nodded my head to agree with the youngster.

"That it is, Nandi. I'm Avery. It is nice to meet you. Why do you still wear your egg?" I questioned my curiosity getting the better of me. Nandi blinked as he looked at me. It seemed he didn't know what I meant. Then he looked down at himself and turned in a circle.

"Gee I don't know. I think it's just part of my body, not really an egg. Or maybe it's a shell like what Kanja has." He suggested thoughtfully. I gazed at him confused. Who was Kanja?

"Kanja?" I inquired. Nandi nodded vigorously.

"Yes! He's a squirtle. He has a shell that covers his whole body and he can pull his arms and legs inside to keep safe. Liz calls him a turtle." He stated excitedly.

"Fascinating... I hope to meet this Kanja soon." I commented with wonder. There were so many things in this world that I did not know. It was an odd feeling but very exciting. Mother had told me I was very wise but how could I be wise when there was so much out there I didn't know? I hope I will learn quickly and be as wise as mother says.

I noticed a flash of pink dart out the bedroom door. Spirit had left the room and Ena was charging right after him. Mother had told us not to leave the room without Cecylia or Tansy. It could be dangerous to venture out on our own. There were those who would harm us. We were 'special' she'd said, unique, and many people would desire to take us for their own.

"Ena! Miss Cecylia! Miss Tansy! Ena and Spirit have run off." I called worriedly to our sitters. Cecylia flicked an ear not catching the sounds of the two at play on the floor.

"Tansy? Where'd they go?" She turned and leapt lightly to the floor to find the ivysaur. Tansy was puttering around a small pot with a tree growing from it. The ivysaur looked up and frowned.

"Where'd who go Ce? Oh no! Where's Ena and Spirit?" Tansy gasped shocked that they would run off. Cecylia smacked her face with one paw and sighed.

"Okay why don't you go look for them. They can't have gotten far. I'll take Ena and Nandi outside like Liz wanted. Bring them along when you find them alright?" Cecylia instructed Tansy. The ivysaur nodded and hurried from the room. She was surprisingly quick for one of her species, or so mother had said. Cecylia beckoned to me and Nandi.

"Want to head outside? The back is perfect for playing in." Cecylia told Nandi and I. I then looked at Nandi who frowned at the distance from the bed to the floor. It was much too far for him to jump.

"You can ride on my neck Nandi." I said with a smile. Nandi grinned up at me and gripped hold of my body with his small hands. Carefully I slipped to the floor. My chest was on the carpet before my tail had even begun to follow me. I really had gotten big.

Cecylia reached out to touch my side then pointed toward the doorway. She knew the way to outside but she still couldn't see the way. I slithered forward slowly with Nandi still riding on my back. I didn't mind, he wasn't heavy. I could feel the strength of my young body with each forward movement. It was an amazing feeling. I hadn't realized just how strong I would get. Time seemed to make little difference. I was growing fast and would only grow bigger and stronger from here.

Cecylia paused and point the way as she listened to our surroundings. She was a fascinating creature. Her memory was so perfect to know where things were without seeing them. How she battled I couldn't imagine but somehow she managed it. I don't know if I would do as half as well if I were in her position. To not be able to see? I shook my head at the thought. It would be a real shame.

I noticed a transparent door, glass I think, ahead. Through it there was a wide fenced in grassy area. It even contained a swimming pond and a playground. A call from behind us made us pause and look back. Tansy had found the troublesome pair and carried them each wrapped in one of her long vines. Ena and Spirit looked quite put out by this method of travel. I had to grin at Ena's expression. She never did like not getting her way.

"Now, now you two, you need to stay with the group. Ce and I can't protect you if you're not where we can see you." Tansy scolded as she reached our position.

"Miss Tansy is right sister, you really shouldn't wander off. What would mother do if anything happened to you?" I chimed in. Ena gazed at me sheepishly then nodded solemnly.

"Alright, I'll try not to run off anymore." She muttered but shot Spirit a mischievous grin. The skitty winked as Tansy set him down. I shook my head hoping my sister would listen to our sitters. Oh well, things were as they should be and the great outdoors awaited us.

We'd been outside before; heck we'd been born in the middle of the night right outside Escennia's city gates. This was different somehow. This place had been setup purely for the recreation and entertainment of trainers and pokémon. I could understand why mother had wanted us to see it. It was a child's paradise.

Instantly Ena and Spirit ran off, again. This time though they did at least remain within visual range, or ear shot, of our sitters. I lowered my head so Nandi could slide off and totter around the sandbox. Personally, I wanted to see the pool. I wasn't a water type, at least mother had said I wasn't, but for some reason I was drawn to the gently lapping waters of the pool. A few water types were out here swimming circles around one another or simply snoozing in the shallow end of the pool.

I'd never swum before but something instinctive kicked in as I slowly lowered myself into the water. The cool liquid felt delightful on my hide. The sensation of being suspended yet sinking was a bit frightening at first but I let myself relax and found that I could easily move through the water same as on land. Before I knew it I was under the water, gliding along as if I'd always done so. I couldn't filter the water for oxygen as I assumed many water types but I could hold my breath for long periods of time. As I grew stronger I would probably be able to hold my breath for even longer.

While I was busy with the pool the others had managed to find things to interest them. Ena was easily the most curious of the bunch and had little self discipline to guide her actions. Spirit didn't help things as he was quite the mischievous kitten. Thus the pair had ventured into the small outcropping of trees that the playground's back fence was entwined with.

No one seemed to realize my sister and new found cohort were gone. It was only the sudden feline shriek that brought all eyes to the back fence. I could feel the water around me vibrating with pounding of paws. Immediately I darted through the water and back to the side of the pool, slithering out with ease. Tansy and Cecylia charged forward moving faster than I'd ever seen them. Nandi stared in surprise as he was left alone in the small sandbox.

"Eeeee! Mommmy!" I heard my sister's cries before I saw her. They broke from the brush, Spirit first his pink fur damp with sweat and eyes wide with fear. Ena was right behind him barking her little head off.

That which they were running from turned out to be a very angry looking mightyena. The canine howled as he cleared the fence with ease and snapped at the eevee kit's heels.

"Ena! Look out!" I cried out fearfully. Ena squealed and kicked it up a notch but still wasn't quite fast enough. Fortunately Cecylia managed to pinpoint the mightyena's location and shot forward at incredible speed. The quick attack knocked the canine back giving my sis and Spirit the chance they needed to get away.

"What on earth did you two do?" Tansy inquired as she caught up both youngsters with a vine each and pulled them out of harm’s way. I drew up beside the ivysaur and stared in confusion at the two. Spirit and Ena stared at the ground.

"We thought it would be funny to... um..." Spirit stammered. Ena said nothing but glanced sideways at the cat. Spirit gulped. "Well he was sleeping and his tail was twitching all over and..." The skitty trailed off again. Tansy and I rolled our eyes in unison.

"You know there's an old saying, let sleeping dogs lie. At least I've heard Liz mention it." Tansy chided. She sighed and set the pair down behind her.

"Now I'm going to help Cecylia out. You two stay here." Tansy emphasized the last words and gave me a knowing glance. I nodded and gently wrapped myself around the two.

"Yes you two stay here with me." I told them giving Ena a disappointed look. The eevee's ears drooped as she stared at my scales not meeting my gaze. Spirit copied her. I hoped that now the two mischievous youngsters would start to behave themselves.

Cecylia dodged a bite attack from the canine. She was amazing in battle. Even though she couldn't see the pikachu seemed to be predicting where the dog would strike next. I watched as Tansy stepped forward looking more imposing than usual.

"Heads up Cecylia! I think we should let this poor mutt get back to his nap." She stated as soft blue spores began to build up around her blossom. Cecylia perked her ears then darted to one side away from the dark dog. Seconds later the cloud of spores blanketed the area sending the canine into a nice sleep.

"Good idea, I didn't really want to have to fight him." Cecylia commented as she picked her way to our location. She stared sightlessly in our direction. A small frown formed on her face then she turned her head toward Tansy. "You know it's probably time to head back inside."

The ivysaur nodded in agreement. Nandi had finally toddled over to figure out what was going on. He looked just the tinniest bit sad at the thought of going back inside.

"Aww, going inside already?" He said with a sigh. Cecylia reached out and patted the togepi's side, just missing his head.

"Liz should be back by now anyway. She'll probably have lunch too." The pikachu informed him. We all perked up at that. My stomach growled causing me to blush a little.

"I like that idea!" I chuckled. Tansy led the way back inside with Spirit and Ena behind her. Nandi and I moved in with Cecylia. I paused at the door to look out into the yard. The world I had experienced so far was exciting but dangerous. I was glad to have such close friends and family there to keep me safe. One day though, I knew I would be the one protecting other youngsters. I grinned to myself and slipped on through the door.

Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord
Yay fluff!

That's pretty much what this was, and I'm pretty sure it was the intent. Cute babies being cute babies. A little bit of mischief, needing to get rescued from the consequences, and all d'aww and stuff. *chuckles*

I was a little disappointed that Nandi got virtually no screen time compared to the others, and really, very little personality development either. There really wasn't a point to his presence in the story other than to be there and smile a lot, it seemed.

I had to grin at Ena's expression. She never did like not getting her way.

This seemed a little out of keeping with the theoretical fact that she and Avery are only a day old. It just feels too soon for such certainty, or for such personality traits to be so firmly established as to be something that never happens. That may just be me, but yeah. I do try to keep in mind ages and passage of time in stories.

Ena seems so small compared to me.

Tense issue. The rest of the story is past tense. Happens sometimes.

But mostly, in the end, this story centers mostly around Avery, the other three and the nannies being periphery to his coming to understand the world. His personality is the one that fills the story, the others establishing a single personality quirk or two and really getting not much else. But that might have been the intent.

But yeah. Lots of cute. Babies are good at that. *g*

So, here's the deal. 10.6 :ffexp is your reward. You may swap that out for up to 1 :happiness for each pokemon in the story at the usual rate (.5 per heart), if you prefer, too.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present. ~Oogway
