He stared enviously at Tyrogue as he clung to Magnemite. His eyes narrowed and his mouth shrunk to a slender slit as he watched them drift several feet above the moist ground. Every step was squishing, splashing agony. He could feel his shoes already soaking through, and maybe some boots would have been a good idea.

For now he was preoccupied, and it wasn't helping his efforts in trying to move as quickly as the liquid land would allow. He had the sneaking suspicion that the Bidoof they had battled earlier wasn't the entire squadron. No, he was certain that there was an entire army stationed all around Opaddeka, and that was the only a scout group that they had decimated. He knew the confrontation would come, and he had to be prepared, like last time. He had to see them coming.

And besides that, he was headed to Brightopolis and the mountains up north. He needed to complete his new and revamped team, and he was frightened that he was still only on the first step.

And the Bidoof lurked. He knew it.

Perhaps the Bidoof were out to get Aris, perhaps not. For now, it would have to remain a mystery, because there were no Bidoof in sight.

Well, in your sight anyway. That doesn't mean that they couldn't see you. Because they were totally watching you, waiting to make the perfect strike and annihilate you from existance.

But that was a story for another time. For now, it was much more simple, and a lot more boring. The fog that permanently made Murmur Valley it's home made seeing anything more than three feet ahead of Aris practically impossible, and it seemed to only be getting thicker by the minute. The ground was it's regular moist self, in combination with the fog, that made every step a gamble. But no guts, no glory, and good luck trying to pick up some chicks in Brightopolis if you couldn't handle the very mundane dangers of Murmur Valley.

Speaking of every step being a gamble, you dun goof'd up. While walking through the bog, Aris happened to land his right foot into a rather sticky patch of mud. It was so sticky, in fact, that trying to remove his foot from the mud would require to take off his shoe first, and weren't his socks soaking wet enough already? This place was misery, pure and simple.

Oh, and did I happen to mention that the mud that was now encasing Aris' shoe wasn't really mud at all? It was a Grimer that wasn't too happy with some blind ass trainer stepping on it. Go figure.

This wasn't a Bidoof. You couldn't step in a Bidoof, at least without it screaming. Wasn't the ground either, because he was stuck in it, and it was screaming. He pulled a few times, and whatever it was threatened to pull his shoe away, and he wasn't having any of that. He could only hope that his Pokemon beating the shit out of it would solve his problems, just like every other time something happened.

"Hey guys. Could you beat the shit out of this?" he spoke aloud. Magnemite abruptly turned around, nearly tossing Tyrogue to the ground as he clung desperately to the moisture-slicked, metal surface. He slipped off and landed in a splash, spraying mud and muck everywhere. He cursed Magnemite's overeagerness and joined in the smashing of the Grimer. He smacked it in the face, and it was electrocuted. He gave it a running kick and it was shocked again.

And uh, hopefully that was enough for them to get moving again and find some goddamn Bidoof to murder.

The Bidoof knew of Aris. They were there, hidden in the misty cloak of the land. Just there, watching, waiting. They would not make a move yet. No. They had... other plans. Plans that would involve the human and his gang of Pokemon. They would soon learn of their folly. No one attacks the Bidoof Barbarian Horde and lives to tell the tale. No one. Well one one person per raid really. You know. They need someone to tell the tale after all. Can't become infamous if the witnesses are all dead.

Ignoring the hidden ninja/Barbarian Bidoof for the moment, we turn out attention to the Grimer that was about to hump Aris's leg. I say about to cause Tyrogue quickly moved in and used Fake out to make it flinch. This allowed the human to remove his leg from the sticky mess before it was abruptly shocked by the floating magnet thing. The Grimer could still fight though, and was about to charge forward when a second shocking crippled it beyond the ability to continue fighting.

A quick kick by the Tyrogue, and now the way was clear for the human to continue on his journey. The Bidoof hidden in the shadows angrily held themselves back. Their allies had fallen much like the Grimer had, and they found it hard to hold themselves back. Only the strongest of the barbarians managed to hold the group back and stop them from charging. As much as they wanted to kill the human, they were more afraid of their leader impaling their asses with some sharp rock or something. For now, they allowed the human to continue uninterrupted to the next landmark.

And just like that, his slimy assailant was vanquished. He exchanged whispered thanks with his Pokemon, and now freed of the sickly grasp, his walk started anew. Striding forward, flanked by his partners, together growing still-rapidly stronger.

The fog faded first, and then the ground solidified. Brightopolis was drawing neared with every step, and they weren't long from another companion joining their ranks.

He wasn't breathing hard anymore, ever since they'd left Hillmoss he'd found his feet were quicker and his body more cooperative. Already he was growing used to the life of a regular Pokemon trainer, one spent trekking through the worst of terrain, always on foot, with only a few Pokemon for a company. Always something waiting around the corner waiting to strike. And that's how his mind got onto the Bidoof horde once more.

The blasted barbarians. He wouldn't put it past them to leap upon him now, just after a small victory, and so close to the city they hoped to reach. He could see it now, the taller buildings peeking over the last hills, just breaking into the horizon. His head swiveled back and forth, eyes peeled for the armed badgers looking for revenge. Remember the Grasslands!, they would cry, vengeance in their eyes and on the tips of their spears.

He wasn't interested in any of that right now. After they stopped and they received reinforcements, though, he hoped to meet them head on and best them once and for all.

Hopefully though, they had the time.

The soft and wet dirt that the trainer trudged onto was also one of the best places for plants to grow, if they could get their seeds under that nutritiously organic matter. Fortunately, not all plants were bound to the place of their origin, especially not the plants that had roots for legs and had enough dexterity to get moving. A quiet and lonely bellsprout found a nice spot half in the the sun and shade, near a larger shrub that was flourishing in the high-nutrient content soil. She decided to settle down, using her scoop-shaped leaves as shovels, digging a small place to stand, keep her root-feet moist, and her body fed.

Jumping into that little hole in the ground, the bellsprout smiled to herself, pulling dirt over onto her feet like kids do with sand at the beach. Patting the soil once, before flicking off the muddy solution off her healthy green leaves, the bellsprout stood almost completely still, save for a minor swaying with the gentle breeze. She soon fell asleep in the sun, drinking up the water in the soil and making sugars for her consumption. Nothing could have ruined her afternoon soak, except that strange approaching sound.

The soil wasn't quite wet enough to make Aris's steps sound squishy and gross, but it was enough to suck the sole of his shoe with enough force to make it an effort to walk. At certain points, the soil was just moist enough to draw the unsuspecting traveler down a little more than he might have expected. His footprints were left behind him, and not noticing the bellsprout as he passed very close to the shrub, he trampled the little thing, unable to get out of the way fast enough.

"Bell!" she screamed, pulling herself out of the ground, dirt-covered and leaf torn. "Sprout!" She pointed accusingly at the trainer and didn't appear to be ready to let him leave without an apology of some sort.

He cursed his haste. The poor Bellsprout, trampled and dirtied, crying out in pain and anger. Doomed for opening its mouth, for his silent vow was to train this on this whole travel, take out everything they spotted. If it had just kept quiet it could have survived.

"You know what to do." He muttered to his companions, still moving forward. He wouldn't call it trust, what was forming. Perhaps expectations. Whatever it was, he was content with it for now.

And that's all I got.

The poor little Bellsprout was expecting an apology for getting trampled. Now that wasn't asking for much. I mean, it is common courtesy to apologize when you did something like that. Of course, this was Aris and there wasn't anything ordinary about this man. He wasn't the type to just apologize for random reasons. Even less when he was out on a self imposed mission to train. Poor Bellsprout. Now it would just become another pebble on the road to greatness.

Tyrogue went in first with its Fake Out effectively stopping the Bellsprout in its tracks. Following this, Magnemite used its Discharge on the grass type. Now, Electric on a grass type? Not really smart if you ask me. Of course it probably wasn't damage that the human was looking for in the attack. It was the paralysis that ensued from said Discharge. Nice. Even the Bellsprout's speed couldn't make a difference when it was paralyzed and was soon pummeled by a Thundershock and Tackle from the duo that further brought the plant closer to defeat. Still, it had plenty of energy left over to strike back, or it would've had the paralysis not kicked in and stopped it.

Carry on!

The flurry of attacks connected and tossed the leafy sproutling, shocked and paralyzed its frail green body. It laid in a heap, smoking and bruised, unable to retaliate but very much still breathing. Tyrogue's breathy grunt drew Aris's attention, turning abruptly, he found his ruthless machine had failed and their time was wasted.

And he wasn't some calculating, demanding trainer, far from it. But impatient? He wouldn't deny it. Expecting? Sure, definitely. He had his idea, or delusions depending on how your day's been going, of how things were to work, and as with any person it was disappointing to find them not met. At the moment? His two young protegés were not the dream team he envisioned, and bringing that group together seemed like a much more daunting task than it had just a short while ago.

But much had changed in that time. Now he found himself one of the heads of the Vanishing Point, and he felt greatly responsible. It seemed foreign, having this in his head all the time. For so long he had lived for himself, doing whatever he wanted to do and what served him best at that moment. Certainly, he had been part of groups before, these alliances of many trainers, even headed them, but he never felt a duty to see it through and have it succeed.

It didn't seem right that he should be the weakest trainer.

The Praetorian Guard. They needed to set an example. He should be able to lead them, not just in his words or in his actions, but physically.

He didn't relish the opportunity to break bad news. Especially not to the two Pokemon he had intended to lead his new team. To tell them that it just wasn't practical at the moment. It's not you, it's me. It would be twice for them. Abandoned once already for the others, if he did it again, just what would happen if he went back to them again, which he genuinely intended to do?

It was foregone, he certainly wasn't going to tell them now. With as few words as possible, not wanting to betray his trepidation, he told them, finish it off and let's get going.

Two Discharges, two Tackle, lemme go to Brightopolis.

As if sensing that Aris was doubting their capability to be great, the two pokemon set forth and pummeled the hapless weed into the dirt, leaving it nothing more than a squashed smoking mass in the rain laden mud. Would this change his decision to let them lead him to glory? Probably not. Miracles seldom happened over night. And that's what they needed.

The troop left the mess behind without a word or backwards glance. The high rises of Brightopolis were looming on the horizon and within the hour they had reached the outskirts of the sprawling city, entering through the rural establishments. Dogs barked and cas darted across roads to hide beneath porches. The echo of noisy lawn mowers marked lazy homeowners taking their time at the daily honey-do lists.

Brightopolis had been reached.

EDIT: oh yeah... .8 :exp for both your guys.
