The gavel fell heavily, and the silence that followed felt like the judge had struck me instead of the sound block. I sat still, eyes set on the tips of my dirty, mud-caked shoes. Dry and dead grass, maybe some misplace fish scales, along with the mud broke into bits as I tapped my shoes together, my heart pounding in my ears.

Eyes were on me as the judge proclaimed my sentence. "For the attempted theft of over one million zenni worth of items from Kevin Baconville Megamall, Kaizanu Tyzin, we find you guilty," his booming voice declared, "Your sentence will be the confiscation of all your zenni-"

"Your Honor," I said suddenly, "with all due respect, that's unreasonable-"

"Ms. Tyzin, please sit down."

I looked down; I hadn't realized that I stood up. Dejectedly, I complied. He adjusted his glasses on the end of his nose and whipped the paper straight in his old hands and continued where he left off.

"Your sentence will be the confiscation of any and all your zenni, the closure of any and all bank accounts, (he looked at me sharply, as if preemptively striking down my imminent interruption, so I closed my slightly parted mouth) and the impoundment of your feraligatr (I felt my heart sink), scyther, and aggron. You will also be held in the county jail overnight." He sighed briefly and added, "In order to repossess your pokemon, you are required to deliver a letter to the local Justice of Mayriver City." He looked down at me expectantly and across the room, that damnedable cop smirked smugly.

I stood up calmly this time and addressed the judge. "Your Honor, may I address the court?" A fire burned my forehead and I found it hard to see as I waited for the judge's reply.

He thought about it for a sweet moment - really, just a split second - and replied, "Go ahead."

It felt like a suddenly burden was lifted. My hands shook and palms sweated. I appeared pale and about to pass out to the jury, and I noted a somewhat worried expression on the face of the bailiff, who would probably be the one who ended up carrying me out, if I did pass out. "Hypothetically - and only hypothetically - if I called you a son of a bitch, what would the repercussions be?"

He jerked slightly, a smirk forming on his face, just like the one on the damn cop's ugly mug. "Well, I would hold you in contempt and assess an additional day in jail." He sat back, waiting for my reply.

"And, what are the repercussions if I thought you were a son of a bitch?" I felt my throat become sore. I was trembling all over and felt weak at my knees. The look of horror on that cop's face was a pleasure to me.

The judge replied, rather jovially, though it masked a hint of annoyance, "I can't do anything about that. No laws against thought." As a result, it was also illegal to use psychic-type pokemon to pry information from a person.

"In the case," I said, licking my lips and swallowing hard. Momentarily, I flashed my eyes at the cop, then flicked back to the judge. "I think you're a son of a bitch."

The cop stood up, grumbling something inaudible under his breath, attempting to roll up his sleeve before the bailiff moved to restrain him, forcing him to sit.

The judge replied with a hearty laugh after asking "Captain Harkness" to "please settle down." Turning to me, he gazed at me with an amazed look. "Well, Ms. Tyzin, I'm not sure what's going on in your head, but I would like you to sort out your issues, and I hope you will reflect on your course of action when you go get your pokemon."

He picked up the gavel again and struck the sound block. "Court dismissed. Bailiff, please escort Ms. Tyzin to her cell."

I willingly held out my hands, the cuffs locked about my wrists as I strolled out into the aisle.

"I'll be watching," the cop whispered in my ear. As he walked passed, I tripped him and watched him stumble, smirking to myself - ear to ear, even.

"I'll keep it in mind. And watch your step, the carpet sometimes bunches up on the floor." I was satisfied. It was some sort of ecstasy as I watched the cop leave, indignant. The probable thought that went through his mind was that I wasn't worth the time, now that I was being locked up.

Later, I found myself locked into a jail cell where I was stripped of all my possessions, except the clothing on my back. My pokeballs (the three that hadn't been taken away), my weapons, and my other paraphernalia were being kept, and I would receive them back, along with my letter, to be delivered at my earliest convenience.

I chortled. "Heh... my earliest convenience." Sitting down on the bed first before giving it a thought, I laid down, cradling my head in my hands as I fell into the abyss of thought.

-----

There was something about this system that didn't make sense to me - not in the least. Surely, it wasn't practical to confiscate all a person's money for a failed attempt at thievery. "Logic states," I said to myself in a low whisper, "that I stole because I didn't have the money to buy my desired items.

"Therefore, confiscating my funds leaves me even more poor and destitute than before. Won't I, then, in theory steal again?" It baffled Kaizanu, in all reality. Or were they expecting me to change my ways and become an upstart citizen with a mortgage? she thought to herself venomously. Chewing the sides of her cheek, she continued to wonder about how she would support herself, though her check from the Opaddeka Military Establishment would be rolling in on the weekend - that would be enough to sustain her, for the moment.

"First thing's first, got to start a new bank account to collect dust," she said to herself. "I mean interest." For whatever reason, Kaizanu felt compelled to correct herself. Sitting up quickly, she sat still, almost like a statue. With sudden force, she stood up, staggering due to vertigo, before recovering and rushing over to the cell wall. Metal bars in her hands, she leaned against the wall, looking left and right for a guard. "Hey. You! Yeah, you. What time is it?"

The guard, dressed in normal uniform, pulled her sleeve up, checking her watch. "About a quarter to nine. Curfew is soon."

"Thanks," I said, jumping back to my bed.

Tossing and turning, I don't think I went to sleep. I don't remember going to sleep, especially after I thought about Akita. She was gone. She was not with me, but I waited expectantly for her shadow to appear. It never did, but my mind did play tricks on me, long after the lights were cut and the other inmates went to sleep.

Something about Akita being gone hit me like the revelation to a religious maniac. For how long would we be separated? What trouble would I get in without her by my side? I will rush to Mayriver City and pick up Akita within a week, I thought, smiling. But wait. Akita will call me a weakling. Needing her to do anything.

My eyebrows tensed up and the pressure was like someone mashing their thumb to my forehead. I threw my arm over my face, cooling my fever, and shielding my eyes from the whole world as I cried silently. When I uncovered my eyes at long last, the lights of the prison were on, my tears were sticky on my cheeks and arm, and my neck and back were sore from the old bed.

I washed off the eye crust in my sink and did all my business, had breakfast with my fellow convicts, and was released when my twenty-four hours concluded. Receiving my pokeball belt, which was disturbingly empty, and my other items, I left.

-----

Some time or another, I suspected it was probably five in the afternoon (I didn't look at my poketech), I turned out my pockets and not even a zenni fell out of them. A growl, hunger pawing at my stomach, disturbed the still air. I thought about going somewhere and killing an animal for meat, but I realized that Akita disapproved. Curbing my appetite with willpower alone, I found myself selling all the items I never touched or felt a use for.

Money piled up in my pockets, and food found itself digesting in my stomach. A new bank account opened in my name, and I was moving on. Akita... will wait for me. Vykrytr will wait for me. Artemis will wait for me, I repeated in my head at least twenty times. Convincing myself was hard to do, but I could always feel the tears welling up or my throat grow sore. "I'll come for you. I'll bring you a prize to make up for my actions."

To return as the same pissant would only be an insult to Akita's hard work. It would be an insult, because I would still be the same weakling that lost the great feraligatr in the first place. Vykrytr would be insulted, because it was his power that brought me to the building and not my own. Artemis would be insulted, because she was the final defense, and she ended up being the first. "Damn me."

People around me began to gawk. Whispers filled the air as I muttered to myself.

"Damn me!" I yelled. Seeing the people encircling me, I sneered. I walked up to one of the men and pointed to his face and got uncomfortably close to his face. "You are my witness," I started in a low tone. "I will recover Akita!" I practically shouted in his face, and he winced, falling backwards.

I kept yelling at him. "I will hold in my hands a trophy! To prove I'm worthy!"

He scooted backwards.

I stepped forward for every foot he moved, closing the gap between us. The circle strained and gushed, letting the man move and not hit a wall. "You hear me!?" I screamed. Practically shoving my finger up his nose, I backed off suddenly. "You hear me?" I repeated in a whisper. Standing in place with my head low, I began to cry. Everyone about me grew silent.

Tears hit the ground and darkened the concrete like raindrops would. Hands by my side clenched so tightly, my short nails cut into my palms. Blood reddened the sidewalk, and then, I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was the man I was yelling at.

"Hey, Miss... it'll be okay." His voice was comforting and soothing. The crowd seemed to disperse, deciding that for some strange reason that this was a lover's quarrel, but I didn't notice them leave as he drew me into a hug, letting me cry on his shoulder. He patted my back as I bawled, staining his nice jacket.

Not sure how long I cried for, but afterwards, I felt my face grow redder and explained the situation. "Don't worry. I'm sure Akita and your other pokemon will be fine waiting. Real friends wait." He reassured me, and the feeling of sadness subsided like waves after a terrible storm.

I apologized for making him late for some appointment, and I don't believe I saw him again after that encounter.

-----

Looking at the city, now only a distant reminder on the horizon, I wondered for how long I would be separated. The ocean, Dagon, grand thefts, and arrests - they all seemed so trivial to her now. Clutching the letter to her chest, she turned her back on the ocean she had loved so much. Kaizanu didn't look back until she was sure that both it and the city were lost under the horizon.

I Am The Coolest Person And You Should All Know It
Now this is an oddity among free-forms. Not every day you see one that demonstrates the other side of the criminal justice system. You usually just see the cops putting away the bad guys. How their hard work finally pays off and they cuff the bad guy. You never really see it from the criminal's point of view these days. It's about the long arm of the law. That's all that people care about these days.

Spelling and grammar was spot on for the most part. I would like to point out the constant miss use of proper names when you spell the Pokemon's name, or rather race in this case. Feraligatr is a proper name when used to single out Akita or any other Feraligatr. Just a little something to keep in mind for future free forms. As far a cons go that was pretty much the only real error that seemed to stick out.

The last thing I would like to note is how much I laughed when Kaiz thought the cop was a SOB. Very original and fit perfectly in the situation.
