Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord
|
*CRACK* The sound shattered the quiet of the night, even as it split the shell of the egg nearly in two. The sharp report startled everyone in the tent out of their slumber. From a box in one corner leaped a vaporeon, crouching protectively in front of it. Still within, two balls of brown fluff unwrapped from around each other, squeaking curiously, as a silver leafeon crouched over them protectively. A lucario in the corner was on his feet in an instant, tassels flaring out as he gathered his resources, hunting for a target, and the white arcanine that had been a pillow for the human moments before lurched to her feet, bristling. The human yelped as his head thumped into the dirt and rolled, almost as reflexively as the fighting pokemon, to his feet. In a near mishap, he nearly rolled over the egg, which had been beside him, but managed to retain enough presence of mind to make a grab for it as he rolled. At least he could at least try to protect it from whatever had made the sound, while his mind played catch-up. The remains of the shell disintegrated under his touch, leaving him clutching a bundle of long, sticky fur to his chest. What the..? Ben disentangled one hand to rub at his face blearily, dropping back into a sitting position and settling the egg's contents into his lap with his other hand. He shook his head, trying to clear out the last vestiges of sleep fog from his mind. Jax relaxed as well, lowering herself back down to lie beside her trainer with a sigh. Ben leaned back against her comforting warmth as his mind struggled to gather up enough bits of sense to be coherent enough to figure out what was going on. Was that just that egg? Good lord. Anubis' tail lashed irritably as he found nothing untoward in the area. His battle aura faded into disgruntled disgust as he turned and padded towards his trainer and the hatchling to check it out. Ben shrugged, gathering the shivering newborn into his lap, wrapping her in the blanket that the egg had just recently been nesting in, after shaking the shell fragments off it. Apparently...shh, little one... he murmured, mostly to the baby, as he did his best to dry her off. See if you can find a towel, Anubis, please? It's cold enough in here, even with Jax. He reached back to pat the warm shoulder behind him and Jax yawned, laying her head back down on the ground. Not for the first time did Ben find some frustration with the damage dealt to the city of Slumber by the rampaging legendary creatures from the gym recently. The Center had ended up rather badly damaged by all the mess. As a result, he and his team were currently making do by staying in the tent he'd picked up for Ross' little shop, using his arcanine as a heater. This was less than ideal, particularly for a new-hatched baby. Two heads popped up over the top of a box, and the gaze of Ben's newest addition fixed on them through the folds of the blanket. Faith appeared a moment later, shooing the pair back down into the box. More trouble than it's worth... the lucario grumbled, changing direction and burying his nose in Ben's pack, pulling a towel and a fresh blanket out after a short search and lofting them, one after the other, at his trainer, nailing him neatly in the face with them both. ...Thanks. Ben managed to stifle the sigh at that, transferring the kit into the towel and tossing aside the damp, sticky blanket. There you go, pet, he hummed quietly as he worked on drying her off, doing his best to project a soothing aura. He could feel the kit's eyes fixed on him as he finished and shifted her into the clean blanket. He used the remaining clean bits of the towel to do what he could for the mess it had made of his lap, hands and face before sending it after the original blanket. He gathered the kit and blanket back into his lap and ran his fingers through the fine, sticky fur, frowning slightly as he smoothed it down around her triangular ears. So...what are you, hmm? Pff... Anubis stalked over, tugging at the blanket to reveal the kit. Ben frowned a little as he felt her shrink away, fearfully, but didn't comment, as the Lucario was already continuing. Just what you needed. Another Eevee, after already trading one away to someone. What a waste. Anubis pulled back, stalking over to curl back up in his corner. I'm going back to sleep. Ben shook his head at that, wrapping the kit back up and soothing her gently. Anubis, be nice. An eevee's a rare pokemon. Two sets of eyes popped back up over the edge of their box, to be corralled back to their mother this time by the blue-finned father. Caligo hopped over the edge after the vanishing heads, confident now that there wasn't any threat to his family. Well, to most people, anyhow. He wasn't about to complain about another Eevee, even if he had just recently traded one of the kits he already had off. Still, he frowned a little as he continued untangling the kit's fur with his fingers. Something didn't feel quite right about this, but he couldn't place his finger on it. An Eevee, huh? He felt the kit shiver, and he quickly brushed a hand down her back, soothingly. It was probably his imagination, brought on by being woken out of sleep like that. Shh. I like dogs, it's all right...I like all pokemon, really. Say that again when we run into a Muk, hey? muttered the 'sleeper' in the corner. I thought you were going back to sleep, the blind trainer shot back, smiling faintly despite himself. I am asleep, can't you tell? Ben snorted softly at that, smoothing the fur down one last time. Well, pet, I suppose we need to quiet down and let grumpy in the corner get his beauty sleep. You'll be better off with Faith and her kits for the moment. She needs someone new to mother anyhow. After he'd traded her third pup off, she'd been sulking half the time of late. A distraction was just what she needed. He stood, unwrapping the blanket at last, cradling the kit as he stepped over to put her into the box with the rest of the eevees and eeveelutions he owned. Paws grappled at the now messy shirt he'd worn to bed as he moved to put her into the box with them, though. The sharp taste of fear prickling at his Aura senses intensified, giving him pause. Ben frowned slightly, straightening back up and letting her settle back into his arms again. He could feel her heartbeat racing under his fingers as he cradled her soothingly, It's all right, really, it is...I'll be here, still...they're just eevees and their mom, like...you, right? He frowned a little as the kit leaned against him, sticking as close as possible. He ran fingers through the silky fur a moment. Paws wrapped around his arm as he went to place her in the box a second time, clinging for dear life. He stood a moment, indecisive, then sighed. ...fine... He gave up and moved back over to his own bedroll. With another sigh, he curled up in it, letting her press up against his stomach. He wasn't sure what he'd do with another eevee, granted, but that could wait until morning. Still, he couldn't help but feel like he was missing an important detail somewhere. However, as he started to mull it over, sleep reclaimed him. Edited by DarthEevee, Oct 12 2010, 10:04 AM.

Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord
|
Ben sat up, rubbing at his eyes. He groaned slightly, shaking off the last vestiges of the dreams that had plagued the rest of his night. Sleep was supposed to be restful, but that hadn't been the case last night. Those red eyes... Ever since he'd met the little 'girl' in the graveyard, he'd occasionally had dreams like that, where he actually saw things, and they were always disturbing. How did he know the eyes were red, for one? And he hated seeing them stare at him. Even if he hadn't been seeing those eyes, he hated the feeling of being stared at. Seeing them just made it that much worse. But it was just a dream, and he had more important matters to worry about. His fingers found the empty spot where the egg had been, pausing a moment at its absence. His memory kicked back into gear, as the warmth against his side stirred, and sat up, gathering the kit into his lap as she yawned. Right, you hatched last night, didn't you? he spoke aloud, running his fingers through the fine, silky fur. The kit remained silent, filling up his lap comfortably as his other pokemon stretched and stirred. Well, then, little lady, I suppose proper introductions are in order, aren't they? He smiled slightly as he felt her yawn lazily. For starters, I'm Ben... Good morning, sleepyheads! Ben's smile faded to a frown as Anubis padded over to the pair of them and the kit shrank back against him, nervously. Fear flashed through his aura senses again, and Anubis pulled back, as confused as him at the reaction. Anubis, stop scaring her. It was out before he even realized he was saying it. He cursed his lack of sleep, and scrubbed at his face fiercely for a few moments. It wasn't the lucario's fault. I'm not trying to, Anubis snapped back, ears slicking back as he shot Ben a look. The irritation melted away after a moment, though, and he looked down at the baby, muzzle wrinkling in an attempt at a grin. He huffed, dropping the grin as she simply cowered further, rubbing at his nose with a paw a moment. Bah. Act like I'm gonna eat you then, see if I care. He stalked off to settle back into his corner, hurt. I know, sorry. Not awake completely yet, Ben apologized carefully, before turning his attention back to soothing the fears away. It's all right, Anubis is a teddy bear, really. I am not. Ben carefully hid his smile as the lucario rose to the bait. Behind us is Jax, he reached up to scratch under her chin as the arcanine poked her face over his shoulder, looking down at the trembling kit. She huffed out a warm breath of air, and withdrew. And, in the box are Faith and Caligo and their kits. He considered a moment, then dug into a pocket, pulling out two more pokeballs. Also currently with me are Shinobi and Bob Ross. Ben released the mightyena and smeargle as he gave their names. The dark wolf pricked his ears up a little as he stretched languidly, studying the wide eyed kit in his trainer's lap as the painter trilled, waving his paint-covered tail cheerfully. Ben considered her uneasy reaction to everyone else presence uneasily. Why was she so fearful? However, since this also doubles as Mister Ross' art studio, we'd best get things cleaned up so he can get to work. He moved to put the kit down so he could stand, frowning a little as paws wrapped around his arm, clinging again. What are you so afraid of, little lady? he frowned, soothingly stroking her fur. She settled down again, but remained tense. For whatever reason, it seemed that she wanted to remain in contact with him at all times, at least for the moment. With a sigh, he hoisted her up and stood, lifting her to let her drape herself over his shoulder's, rather like Faith often did. The kit perched comfortably, wrapping her tail around his neck as he moved carefully. He hesitated a moment, as she settled herself. It seemed almost like Faith was draping herself there for a moment, and not this kit. He shook his head after a moment, dismissing the thought. He wasn't the only one who made the connection, either. Feeeeon... The leafeon made her displeasure at seeing her roost taken clear and her trainer sighed. You're not sitting there at the moment, Faith, and if you did, you wouldn't be staying with your babies, now would you? Ben asked reasonably, digging around in his pack for some clean clothes. Ross hopped past, chirping excitedly. Anubis, stop sulking in the corner and help out here, would you, please? I'm not sulking. And why can't anyone else help? The lucario stood up with a sniff and moved over to the sleeping bag to pack it up. Because you and Ross are the only ones with anything resembling hands with me at the moment, and Mister Ross is already helping? Ben answered the question with a question, mildly, as the smeargle pattered past, carrying an easel. Sure, get logical on me, Anubis retorted, moving over to the small folding table and starting to set it up. I'm always logical. Ben considered a moment, then juggled the kit as he took his old shirt off to replace it with a clean one. Hopefully she'd settle down soon and stop being so absolutely clingy. Hah! Ben chuckled and tugged his boots on, feeling the kit shifting to remain on her perch. Stamping his feet to settle them on comfortably, he headed over to help Anubis with the table. Within minutes, they had the tent all set up, with no real evidence it had been being used as living space the night before. Ben nodded to himself, grabbed his thick winter coat and paused. All right then, girlie, you're gonna have to move, at least some...hang on. He pulled her off his shoulder, tucking her under one arm, then the other as he shrugged the coat on, then zipped her into it, against his chest. He left the zipper down a bit, though, so she could look out if she wanted to. It was almost like having Faith or Cal again before their evolutions. Jax, Faith, Cal, you three stay here with Mister Ross and keep an eye on the kits, alright? The white arcanine heaved a sigh, but simply moved to lay down along one side of the tent, her bulk and natural heat keeping it a decent temperature. The leafeon and vaporeon didn't bother to even do that much, as Ben slipped out, accompanied on his left by the silent mightyena, and Anubis moving to pace him on the right. So, what's the plan, then? Anubis eyed the pair of bright eyes peeping out of his trainer's jacket, thoughtfully. Should we take her to the nurse and get her checked out? The warrior's eyes narrowed slightly as the kit shrunk back fearfully once more. Hmm...we probably should soon, at least... Ben considered the idea as the kit pressed back against his stomach, as if trying to become a second skin. But I think that for the moment, I'd rather let her get used to us first. His frown deepened a little as she relaxed at that statement. Why such odd reactions to such simple things? She currently seems rather afraid of everyone but me, after all. Wish I knew why. Anubis heaved a sigh. I hadn't noticed. Well, you could always try asking her why. Ben nodded a little to that, considering the suggestion as he reached in to scratch behind her ears, frowning a little again as he did so. And do you think she'd answer? he asked finally, then paused as another thought struck. For that matter, have you heard her make a sound since she hatched? Now that you mention it... Ben stopped as Anubis slid in front of him and turned around, blocking his way. The lucario leaned over, poking his nose down the jacket, trying to get another look at the kit. She hasn't made a peep, has she? Anubis... Ben backed up as he felt the kit flatten herself against him again at the intrusion. He really wasn't completely comfortable having the lucario breathing down his chest either, which didn't help. The lucario straightened up as if shot and backed off, ears slicking back in irritation. He raised his paws in protest, whining, It's not my fault! Yeah, but you could stop pushing your nose in her face every five minutes and maybe then you'd stop scaring her so much. He stepped around the fighting pokemon and continued on. The lucario stood a moment, then turned and caught up with his trainer, trailing after them. He looked not unlike a woebegone puppy trying to follow someone home. ...sorry... he mumbled at last, after several minutes of uncomfortable silence. Anubis scratched behind one of his tassels with a paw, discomfited. He sidled around to pace Ben again, looking out of the corner of his eye at Ben's coat and its occupant, looking away hastily as the gleam of eyes disappeared as he did so. I'm not scary, really. Teddy bear, remember? Ben choked down a laugh at that, fighting to keep a suitably serious expression on his face as the lucario shuffled uneasily, eyes flicking towards the kit and away, not wanting to scare her again. Shinobi wasn't nearly so diplomatic, lolling out his tongue in a laughing grin. The kit's eyes peeped back out, staring at the steel pokemon. Really. Cross my heart. The lucario did so, turning to look and wrinkling his nose up in his best attempt at an ingratiating smile. His plumy tail wagged as he'd seen Jax do from time to time when being friendly, hopefully. The eyes vanished again, and Ben couldn't stop the snort, choking on his own laughter. You know...you trying to be cute has to be one of the most adorable things I've ever encountered in my life. If lucarios could blush. Aw, shaddup. You can't even see me. Don't need to. Ben reached out to pat the lucario's head, giving a reflexive scratch behind the canine ear before catching himself and shrugging. Just relax and be yourself. She'll calm down in a little. Just give her some time to get used to things. Cal wasn't anything like that when he hatched, nor his kits... The pokemon gave up and trudged sulkily after his companions, not meeting Shinobi's laughing gaze with a sniff. Have patience, Anubis, and things will work out. She's just confused and a baby. I guess since I was the first thing she saw, that's why I'm okay. Faith was like that when she hatched, too. He wasn't sure he really wanted another pokemon calling him 'Daddy' around, but there wasn't much he was going to be able to do about it if it were the case. It made the leafeon happy, after all. You spoil her rotten, the lucario felt impelled to point out. Yeah. Probably, the blind trainer shrugged equitably. No one's perfect. Anubis didn't respond to that, and they continued on in relative silence for a time. Ben hummed idly as they wandered through the quaint village, pausing occasionally to detour around construction zones. Shame that the place is so busted up...hopefully they get it fixed soon. It does seem kind of odd, though, all of those legendary pokemon getting loose from the gym and rampaging like that. Ben absently gave Shinobi a scratch as they paused at a crosswalk. How so? Anubis snuck a look in the direction of Ben's coat, just in time to see the flash of eyes disappearing again. He tried to pretend he hadn't noticed, cocking his head as he waited for the answer. Well, think about it. Did you ever seriously think about running away, even back when you hated my guts? Who says I don't still hate you? Anubis mumbled reflexively, without any real feeling behind it. Ben snorted softly, but continued as if he hadn't heard it. Really. I'm just saying. If he used them as his Gym teams, then it's vanishingly unlikely they hated him, right, and so why run loose, or go on a rampage like that, legends or no? Brainwashing? Anubis shrugged. Ben laughed at the reply as they headed across the street. Who knows. Probably doesn't really matter, and I'm never going to get the answer anyhow. Be funny, going up to the Gym and asking about that, though. 'Excuse me, but do you brainwash your pokemon?' That'd end well. It was the lucario's turn to snort in response. Ben absently reached into his coat to stroke the kit, smiling a little as her head poked out of his coat as he touched her fur. See? There we go. Anubis glanced over, then away quickly, ears flattening against his skull. Teddy bear, I swear. Ben couldn't help it this time. He burst out laughing. The ears plastered themselves further against the masked skull. So I don't like having babies projecting terror at me, is that a crime? Ben got his amusement back under control after a moment, at least insofar as laughing went. The kit's gaze darted from him to the lucario and back again. No, no it's not, Anubis, sorry. Just...you calling yourself a teddy bear... Ben clamped his mouth shut firmly, not wanting to further hurt the warrior's feelings further by breaking out into laughter again. Yeah, yeah... The jackal pokemon shot a pleading look towards the kit. You're not afraid of me still, are you? The bright eyes regarded him solemnly, but the head didn't vanish. He tilted his head a little, and took a half-step closer, and sighed as the head vanished. He could still feel her eyes fixed on him, though. He resumed his previous distance with a tiny sigh, keeping watch out of the corner of his eye. Ben reached over to grip the lucario's arm, laughter gone. She'll get used to you, really. He smiled encouragingly in his companion's direction. Let's go see if the shop's open, for now, all right? Sure... Anubis did his best to sound like he believed Ben as he padded after them with a sigh. Edited by DarthEevee, Oct 16 2010, 10:20 AM.

Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord
|
The blue-furred warrior crawled across the floor, the spike on his chest occasionally scraping against the earth. It was a total contrast to his usual upright confidence. His ears lay flat against his skull as he tried to look as non threatening as possible. The brown fluffball he crept towards watched, ears twitching restlessly as she sat there primly. He got within ten feet, then five, then two. He shifted a little, tail swishing through the air as he crouched there, staring into the kit's face, wrinkling his nose up in another canine grin, edging another couple inches closer. She still didn't move, and his ears perked forward hopefully. Hi there, little lady. See, I don't bite. Right? Anubis shifted slightly, then lifted one paw, inching it forward, to within inches of the kit. She eyed it suspiciously, sitting there like a queen, considering it like one might inspect an insect crawling toward them. Seconds inched past as the tableau held, then ever so delicately she shifted, leaning forward to sniff at the paw lightly. The lucario's tail wagged harder. See? I told you to relax and give it time. Ben smiled from his seat nearby, attention on the scene, amused. There was a pause, then the jackal hesitantly shifted again, paw rising up, moving to touch the kit. She reared back violently and bolted, skittering around to the other side of their trainer and he jerked his paw back as if stung with a sigh. Anubis sat up on his haunches, looking disgruntled, pretending not to see the eyes peeking around to stare at him again. Sure, until I actually try and touch her or something. She still acts like anyone but you is a leper. I still haven't heard her make a single peep, either. That worries me sometimes. It was true that there wasn't much fear directed at him any longer, but the near-violent rejection of physical contact was a bit unnerving. And the silence was almost unnatural. The lucario huffed a little, as he turned his gaze over, meeting the kit's again. She sneezed, as if daring him to do something again, and he swiped a paw across his muzzle uneasily. The occasional mischievous spark made him wonder... Yeah, I know. Ben sighed, scooping the kit up from behind him and depositing her into his lap. I've considered taking her to the Nurse to have her looked over. But that fact that she seems to panic at the idea of anyone but me touching her, and it's worse if she doesn't already know them for a few days, I don't know how that'd work out. I'd rather not have her hurt herself. The fact that she doesn't ever seem to want to be more than five inches from me doesn't help. He rubbed at his eyes tiredly. He hadn't been sleeping well lately, what with the dreams haunting him at least once every night. He had no idea why he was dreaming about those eyes, but they wouldn't leave him alone. At least once or twice every night, he found himself waking up out of one of those dreams. Yeah, I noticed that too. I think your right that terrifying her like that won't help, but I still feel like something's wrong with all this. Anubis sighed, watching the kit as Ben shifted uneasily at that. The lucario shook his head and scratched under his chin uneasily. I just think that we need to do something... I'm open to suggestions. Ben waited a moment, but Anubis didn't answer. He sighed and stood, cradling the kit in one arm as he grabbed his coat with the other. Yeah, that's the problem. In any case, they said the shop would be open again today as I recall, so we can at least get pick up those supplies I've been wanting to. And who knows, maybe the shop have something for sleeping better. He shrugged the coat on, and settled the kit into the front of it, fighting the urge to yawn. It'd be nice if you'd stay with Faith and her babies, though, little lady. Why, haven't you been sleeping well lately? The lucario cast a closer look at his trainer, cocking his head to the side. Ben hesitated a moment, then shrugged and shook his head. No, not really. Guess it's all the craziness lately. Just waiting for something else to drop on my head. He didn't feel comfortable mentioning the dreams to anyone. They always seemed so silly once he was awake. It was just eyes, after all. He adjusted the coat, frowning a little as he settled the kit in comfortably. I suppose that's kind of understandable. Still... Don't worry about it too much, Anubis. I'm sure I'll be fine in a day or two. Just my imagination getting away with me. Ben waved the lucario's concern off, ducking out of the tent and out into Slumber. After a moment, he heard the padding of paws behind him, and sighed faintly. I'm fine. There's such a thing as protesting too much, you know. The lucario didn't sound convinced. Ben didn't answer that, continuing down the street. The pokemon followed, then heaved a sigh as the silence started to become uncomfortable. I don't like the smell of paint after a while, either, and Faith's kits are little terrors when they get bored. I don't know how she and Cal deal with it. They have patience. It's a virtue I don't think you have, pal, Ben managed the ghost of a smile as he teased his companion. Anything to get away from the previous subject. He could feel Anubis relax at the rejoinder, at least some, which was another relief. Patience. Bah. The lucario waved a paw in the air, pretending to be dismissive of the idea. Patience is boring. He smirked a little, as Ben chuckled in response to that. I suppose. But, you know, good things come to those who wait. They continued on in a more companionable silence for a time, weaving through the town towards the store, giving a wide berth to all the rebuilding efforts. Some of the more suicidal legendaries had caused a lot of damage. Ben shuddered in memory of the Regirock he had run into. He paused at an intersection, trying to get his bearings, as a larger crowd brushed past in the opposite direction. Despite his best efforts, as always, he couldn't help but overhear parts of the conversation. ...lousy luck, pal. Hadn't you just bought that? Yeah, I had. If I catch the low-life that stole it... "You sure you didn't just misplace it? You'd lose your own head if it weren't attached." "I'm sure already! I left it right beside..." Ben frowned at the snippets of conversation as they moved out of range. Huh. That's like the third time I've heard talk of theft this week. Guess there's someone deciding to take advantage of the situation... Yeah. Wonder if he'll target us sometime. The lucario grinned wickedly, showing off his teeth. I'd love to see him trying to get past me. Ben shook his head, smiling at that. Bloodthirsty beast. But yeah, if you didn't get them, Jax would. Don't rip their face off, if they do, though...I'd rather not have to deal with the mess you guys maiming someone would cause, even if it is a thief. It wasn't the first time he appreciated having a pack of dogs as his pokemon team. Not only did they sleep lightly, waking when an unfamiliar scent presented itself, but chancing all those teeth after such an alert; most people moved on to easier targets instead. I rather doubt they'll target us, though. Most people don't go aver so well guarded targets, and it's not like I have much worth stealing on me. But if they do, maybe we can catch them. He pushed the door to the store open, heading in. Mister Ross has been getting low on his art supplies, though, and I've been thinking about picking up a larger supply of pokeballs. He felt the kit withdraw back into his coat uneasily, and sighed faintly. It would be nice if he could go and take her to the nurse or something. They wandered the aisles, looking for what they needed. Anubis paused to inspect the supplies of pokeballs curiously when they came across them. Any reason you have a sudden interest in catching pokemon again? I dunno. Might be neat to fill this thing someday, I guess. Ben pulled the pokedex out of a pocket with a shrug. A pause as he considered, then, I'm also kind of curious about evolution. He put the pokedex away with a sigh. But really, let's just get everything and get out of here. Between the kit and his winter coat, it was getting stuffy quickly in the building. Luckily, it didn't take long to get everything and get out. It seemed as if they had timed it well, coming in a lull, so there was no lines to deal with, and little need to haggle over prices. The trip back seemed to take even less time than the walk there, and once inside the tent, Ben took his coat off again. Anubis slipped around him, and flopped down into his corner, yawning. Ben held the kit in his arms for a moment, considering, then deposited the kit onto the floor. She gave him a reproachful look, then adhered herself to his pant-leg as Faith and Caligo's two children bounded over. Hey now... Ben cocked his head as the two of them circled, heads bobbing in unison as they studied this new eevee kit in their midst. She, for her part, was plastered against his leg so tightly that he didn't think there was a chance of him moving it any time soon. You two had better not be thinking of treating her like you did your brother. He wondered a moment how Emery was getting along with that one, or if she'd gotten to pick him up yet. There wasn't time for musing, though. Dismissing the thought, Ben swooped down and snatched the two up, creating identical indignant squeaks as he hoisted them upwards. The third kit detached herself from his leg at this, staring upward in uneasy surprised. He took the opportunity to sit down, depositing both of Faith's pups into his lap. They squealed again, and began to wrestle, to the obvious disgust of his newest companion. She slunk around behind him, and leaped onto his shoulders, looking down at the two of them distastefully. He reached up to scratch behind one of her ears, frowning a little as she pulled away and the two kits bickered in his lap. Something the matter? The boy-kit squawked at his sister latched onto his ear, and Ben turned his attention to separating them again. Enough, you two. He scratched under each blunt muzzle, digging his fingers into the coarse fur, as he considered the the lot. A distraction would be best for all of them, he suspected. I had been going to see if you two liked the names I came up with for you, but since you're so busy trying to kill each other, I suppose that can wait... He hid his amusement as their ears perked straight up at that, and both of them stilled completely. He could feel their eyes on his face as he sat there, shifting his scratching to behind their ears. The third kit draped herself over his shoulders, listening to this, silent as ever. Once more, he took a moment to wonder at that silence, then shifted his attention back to the matter at hand as four paws planted themselves on his chest. Two insistent noses prodded his chin, and he affected confusion. Something you two want? he asked innocently, and hid a smile at the indignant squeaking he received in reply. What? Are you meaning to say that you actually are interested in those names? More squeaking, excited this time. It was so hard not to laugh. Well...I don't know... Ears flattened. He had them riveted now. Even the kit on his shoulder was drinking in his act, watching with a quiet fascination. I suppose I can see what you make of them, if you're really going to pay so much attention to me. I mean, they're really silly little things, names... Anubis snorted quietly from his corner. Of course they're silly. You came up with them. You hush. Ben pretended to be annoyed at the interruption. Two dirty looks were shot at the lucario, which was made it even harder to hide his amusement. I suppose since everyone wants to hear them so badly... Says you, came quietly out of the corner with the jackal. The blind trainer paid the mutter no mind this time and tapped the girl-kit on the nose. You, little nighthawk, I thought Selene might suit you. It means 'moon' in Latin, and was the name of a mythical goddess of that same celestial body. She squeaked at that, ears pricking straight up. You like it then? He smiled slightly at her enthusiastic response to the question. The boy-kit harrumphed softly, sounding sulky. Oh, I haven't forgotten you, good sir. You, young daystar, I thought Phoebus would suit you, being another name for Apollo, the sun god. It also means 'bright,' and I think you are that, no? He laughed softly at his excited trill of reply. Well then, moon-lady, brighteyes, off with you, then. He let them scamper of, yipping excitedly. He reached up to stroke the third kit thoughtfully for a time afterwards. He had noted their personalities emerging, the girl loving the evenings, and dark shadows. She took after her father and grandfather, though she wasn't nearly so obsessed with stealth. She preferred the darkness, the shadows, and the night, but had a bit of her mother's personality. As for the male pup; he, Ben suspected, took after their grandmother in many ways. He carried himself almost regally, and had a manner that reminded him of the espeon, anyhow. However, he also had a bit of his father's solemnity, and a bit of his mother's tendency to leap before he looked. I think those names fit pretty well, don't you? Ben turned his attention back to the last kit and Anubis. The lucario yawned, feigning disinterest, but Ben could tell he agreed. The kit stirred slightly wrapping her tail around his neck, but didn't reply. Finally, he spoke again. And as for you, little lady...what should we call you, hmm? he could feel her eyes on him as he waited. She remained silent, however, and after a time he sighed. A quiet one, then, like Nautilus? Ben considered a little. You're awfully attached to me, though. I wish I knew why. Even Faith wasn't this... He shook his head as he trailed off, not finishing the thought. Thinking aloud? Anubis spoke up at last, but didn't move from his corner, crimson eyes studying the human and the eevee on his shoulder. I guess so. He stroked the fine fur of the kit as she lay draped over his shoulders. Just pondering names for her. And...well, everything. He shrugged helplessly. Ah. What's in a name, really? The lucario yawned, closing his eyes and settling back into his corner, letting the silence fill the tent once more. Ben continued to run his fingers though her fur, thoughtfully. So, do you have any thoughts on what would suit you, little one? he asked, breaking the silence at last. Beneath his hand, her chest rose and fell slowly, evenly. That coupled with her muted aura made him suspect he wasn't going to get an answer. Helpful, you are. He dropped his hand off her side, shaking his head. Asleep again, is she? Anubis stirred, opening his eyes again and looking over curiously. He cocked his head, tassels flaring slightly as he extended his own senses a moment, then snorted softly, relaxing. Lazy little thing... Ben frowned a little. It sure seems like it, anyhow. There was a slight tenseness of her muscles that made him wonder. The more he tried to figure her out, the less it seemed that he understood. He kept having the feeling that he was holding a bunch of jigsaw puzzle pieces in his hands, but couldn't seem to get them to fit together. All he kept finding were more questions, it seemed like. Just what am I supposed to do with you? he asked rhetorically. There was no reply. Edited by DarthEevee, Oct 15 2010, 04:45 PM.

Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord
|
The eyes stared, unnerving and silent. Time crawled past as they watched, unwavering, waiting. He couldn't ignore them, because they just kept staring. He wondered once more how he knew they were red. He moved towards them, but they always remained just out of reach; staring, waiting. What did they want? They were definitely waiting for something. He just couldn't understand it; couldn't figure out what it was they wanted from him. Finally, he spoke up. What do you want? As always, there wasn't an answer. That nagged at him. It felt almost familiar... Then, the eyes turned away, retreated. As if they had given up on him. Wait...wait! He hurried after them, but they were gone. Come back! It was as if they'd never been there... Wait... Ben jerked awake, sitting up abruptly. Reality caught up with him, and he sighed, feeling obscurely disappointed. He rubbed at his forehead wearily. That dream just wouldn't go away. He couldn't figure it out, either. It was just eyes. There was nothing scary about it really, but it always unnerved him. 'They just stare at me, as if trying to see into every corner of my soul...' He shuddered, shoving the thought away hastily, fingers dropping to his wrist. The watch read two, and he stifled a groan. It was almost better than wrestling with the dreams, but he needed sleep. He felt the warmth of his sleeping companion's auras. They soothed his frayed nerves as he sought each one out, from Cal and Faith and their kits in the corner, to Jax beside him and... Anubis stirred in the corner, and he froze. The lucario settled after a moment, but Ben lay back down quickly. If he didn't want the steel type lecturing him, he'd better get back to sleep again. But he couldn't quite rid himself of the feeling that he was forgetting something important, as he slipped back into sleep. Hopefully the dreams would leave him alone now... The eyes returned, staring at him again, waiting for something only they knew... Are you sure you're all right? Ben stifled an irritable retort, counting to ten. And then doing so again. I'm fine, Anubis...just tired, he replied at last, once he was sure he wasn't going to bite the lucario's head off. Just like the last eight times you asked. Yeah, but... Drop. It. Thankfully, the pokemon took the hint as he bit off each word. A few minutes of blessed silence reigned. Ben took another sip of the chai in front of him, moodily. They weren't alone in the cafe, and he really wasn't in the mood to listen to the chatter. Some of it occasionally got through anyhow, further irritating him. ...saw a black tail going out the window... ...you hear the latest? They say it's the work of a gang of pokemon... ...if it's a whole gang of them, why only one... ...probably some trainer, Ex-Rocket or something... Didn't they disband? Yeah, but that doesn't mean the old members ceased to exist... He sighed at the last snippet that filtered in, finishing off the cup in one long gulp and standing up abruptly. He cradled the kit that had been dozing in his lap carefully as he threw his jacket back on. All right then, guys, let's go. Ben tucked the kit gently into the coat as he zipped it up. Anubis stood up, studying him with a frown, as Caligo skittered out from beneath the table, Shinobi following more sedately behind. He was getting tired of hearing about the thieves, or gang of them, or whatever. But of course, it was what everyone was talking about these days. He'd contacted the police out of a sense of duty, to see if they wanted him to try and help any, but they had refused. It had been kind of funny, their reaction, though. He had the feeling they'd looked at him a little sideways, and he couldn't quite figure out why. He seriously hoped it wasn't because he was blind. If it were, he'd be seriously tempted to go back there and knock some sense into one or more of them. He suspected, though, it had something to do with the Unfettered. He never really felt comfortable thinking too much about his time in that organization. He had joined because he didn't trust the Government, and Jolt in particular. Something about that man had always made him uneasy. It had proven, in his opinion, to be something of a mistake. But he couldn't undo his mistakes at this point in time, so he had to deal with them. Still, it hadn't felt like that was really the reason either. It wasn't as if he weren't part of the military, working for the same government they were, though. He couldn't figure it out. Ben cocked his head as Anubis paused, growling uneasily. He caught the flare of attention a moment later, directed at him. There was wariness, and a flavor of anger. Two emotions, two people. He hesitated, trying to pinpoint it. It wasn't hard, though, since it was moving towards him. He turned. Pardon me, but that's your vaporeon, isn't it? Ben cocked his head to the side at the question, brows furrowing slightly. Caligo? He is, yes... he replied cautiously. It wouldn't do to frown, but the tone of the question made him want to bristle. He could tell the lucario beside him already was. Cal crept up behind him, his father a silent shadow beside him. Why? That vaporeon stole from me last night, it took my..! The new voice was cut off by the first, and Ben caught Anubis' forearm as they started to argue back and forth, the first trying to calm the second down. Cal pressed against his leg, as Shinobi melted into the shadows, ears slicking back. They weren't going to catch him off guard. Get Shinobi back the the tent, now, he hissed in an undertone, keeping his face as straight as possible while the first man calmed the second down. I'll handle this and get back to you. Keep everyone safe. He couldn't have those two going off on these people unreasonably. Caligo had a cooler head, inherited from his mother, than his father, who thought a little too like an assassin sometimes for his trainer's comfort. And Anubis, loyal though he was, was the sort to leap before he looked. But... the lucario tried to protest. Go. Ben refused to hear it and let go, stepping forward. Caligo pressed against his leg, and the lucario faded back after the mightyena after one last moment of hesitation. I'm sorry, but it couldn't have been Caligo you saw last night, Ben spoke to the two, interrupting their muttered argument. It... The first voice hushed the irate fellow once more. Another momentary pause, some muttering this time as he waited patiently. Finally, the first man spoke up. It is possible it could be a mistake. However, your vaporeon does match the description given. I know he was in my tent last night, though, which kind of makes it impossible for him to have been robbing someone, Ben carefully kept his tone even. It was becoming obvious that the first voice was a police officer, and it wasn't going to go well if he lost his temper. He stood, head tilted downward slightly, tense. He fought the urge to ball his hands into fists as he waited. The tension in the air was so thick that he felt like he was going to choke on it. Perhaps. If you would, however, come down with me to answer a few questions... Oh yes, a few questions. Ben nodded slightly to that, not trusting himself to speak at the moment. A pause. Your other pokemon... He trailed off at that point, not quite making it a question. So they'd noticed at last. Went back to the tent. Ben answered anyway, with a slight shrug. You should have recalled them. He sensed the disapproval, but didn't immediately reply. I don't condone having pokemon, even owned ones, wandering around on the... I left their pokeballs in the tent, with my other pokemon, so I couldn't have recalled them even if I wanted to, he interrupted. I trust my companions implicitly. Ben took a step forward, and cocked his head to the side. It was all truth, what he said. He couldn't lose his temper, though. You wanted to go down to your headquarters and ask me a few questions, didn't you? You shouldn't have sent them off. Caligo is here, and he's the one being accused. I have several other pokemon, and I didn't want them, or Caligo's family to start getting worried when we didn't return right away. Ben rubbed at a temple. I'm sorry, but they weren't accused of anything, so I thought it would be better to have them reassure the rest of my pokemon. If I hadn't, it was possible they might come looking for me. Well...come on then... It was easy to see that he wasn't happy with the disappearance of the two pokemon. It was a little late to change the fact, anyhow. Ben followed him and the angry fellow through the city, quietly, mind working quickly as he wrapped his arms around to support the kit. She was tense in his jacket, as Caligo paced sedately by his side. He paused as they held the door open, then made a slight face and went in when it became obvious they were waiting for such. He stumbled slightly over the steps, further fraying his hold over his temper. This was going well. The angry fellow had been left in the lobby, at least, however, a second officer followed them now. Please, take a seat. Ben hesitated, as he was shown into a room. Cal solved the problem for him, however, by bounding over into the seat and barking once. Thanks, Cal... he muttered as he moved carefully over to the vaporeon, who obligingly moved to the side so he could sit down once there. The vaporeon settled half on his lap beside him, as ben shifted the kit in his coat, feeling her unease. Is there a problem? No, not really, Ben replied, cautiously. He couldn't figure out if they were doing this deliberately, but he could tell that these fellows were waiting for any opportunity to pounce. He wasn't about to give them an opportunity if he could avoid it. Could we get your name, please? He shrugged. Ben Summers. A slight pause, then the second person spoke. You say your vaporeon was in your tent last night. How are you so certain? Because I woke up around two, and he was sleeping with his family. You're positive? Disbelief colored the question. 'They're trying to irritate you, don't rise to it...' Ben merely nodded, once, in reply. The first spoke again. You're positive of the time? Ben merely raised his arm, pulling his his sleeve up to show off the watch. You were wearing that last night? He nodded again. He wasn't going to let them get to him. Their suspicion fed his frustration, however, bringing the beginnings of a headache. Sometimes he really hated auras. Round and round it went. He shifted slightly as the questions went on, feeling the kit stir again. She was getting agitated as well. You also own a lucario, and a mightyena, as well as a smeargle, correct? Do you have any eevees? Ye...wait, why? He cocked his head to the side with a slight frown at that. That hadn't been a question he expected, by any stretch. Well, not to put too fine a point on it, those all are pokemon that we've had reports of stealing objects, as well as a vaporeon, which I might say, it was said to have a dark crest, much as yours does. And this is known how? Ben frowned a little at that. Even putting aside the ridiculous notion that anyone could spot Shinobi if he didn't want them to, he knew his pokemon. The idea was absurd. He almost said that aloud, but caught himself in time. We aren't here to answer your questions. It is quite suspicious however, that you own at least one of every species that has been reported in the recent wave of thefts. He shifted slightly, feeling the kit in his coat tense. It is, isn't it? However, neither I nor my pokemon are thieves. And again, I would like to know how someone was certain that a vaporeon's crest was dark, when it was apparently night out? Most things look dark in darkness... Again, we're not here to answer your questions. Ben took a deep, steadying breath, as they started in again with more questions. Where was he staying? Why there? What was he doing in Slumber? Hours crawled past. It was obvious they were trying to find any inconsistencies in his testimony, as the questions repeated, the phrasing changed slightly each time. They were trying to catch him in a lie. His head ached as they went around again, but he wasn't going to give them the satisfaction of snapping in front of them. The kit in his coat remained unnaturally silent. She listened to everything, and he could feel her tension, and he knew it was long past when he would usually fix dinner for his pokemon. But yet, she remained silent still. He couldn't use that as an excuse to get them to lay off. Caligo bristled beside him, but waited, silent as the kit. Finally, it seemed, they'd run out of questions. He held his peace, fighting down any number of things he'd like to say at that point. He wanted to get out of here, get back to the tent, and sleep. His head pounded in time with his heartbeat, and their auras grated against his senses, painfully. Seconds ticked past, then a minute, as they sat there. Finally, the silence was too much. If you want to search my tent for all this stuff you think I've stolen, go ahead, if... he bit off the rest of that. No telling them 'if you haven't already.' No sense antagonizing them at this point. ...if you'd like. I haven't used the PC for the past three weeks, either, so I couldn't have gotten rid of them that way. Ben couldn't resist adding that, but then forced himself to stop, feeling their eyes on him. Antagonizing them wasn't going to help. 'But it makes me feel better...' All the same... Do you have any proof that I did it? That probably wasn't one of the best things to say, either, but it was out before he could stop it. We are not... ...here to answer my questions, I know. Ben finished the statement for them, stifling a sigh. Please, may I go now, unless you have some actual proof that I or my pokemon committed these crimes? One good thing that had come from his time in the OME was a greater understanding of the laws and how they worked. There was a long silence. You may. Thank you for your time. He also heard what was unsaid. 'We've got our eyes on you now.' Right. He hardly cared. Ben stood, bracing himself as his head throbbed again, and managed a strained smile and polite nod. Thank you. Good day to you both. Let's go, Cal... He hurried out of the building, and to the tent, stumbling again. Once within the relative safety of that sanctuary, took his coat off, holding the kit in his arms and falling back onto his bed with a groan. By Arceus... He rubbed at his temples with one hand, groaning. Sometimes I wish you hadn't taught me this Aura sensing, Anubis... he winced, rolling onto his side. I'm getting hammered by feedback again... The kit pressed against his side, trembling with something between suppressed fury and fear, and he scratched behind her ears soothingly, tracing their triangular shape with one finger, smoothing down the silky fur, trying as much to calm her as himself. Went that well, hmm? came the dry response as Anubis emerged from his corner, stretching. The lucario's aura radiated deep concern, a sharp contrast to the tone of voice, however. The difference was frustratingly painful against his raw nerves and he winced again. Don't do that right now, please? What? Now Anubis was bewildered, his aura shifting rapidly. It didn't help any. Sarcasm. My head hurts enough as it is. Please? I... Anubis sighed and moved over, as the kit pressed against his side, looking at his face worriedly. Sorry. He dug through the packs for some headache pills to take to his trainer. You still need sleep, he noted, eventually, padding over as he fought with the cap on the bottle. Ben groaned again, throwing an arm over his face. The other hand remained buried in the kit's fur. Don't remind me. Those damned dreams... he broke off, but it was too late. Dreams? Anubis' aura went spiky with agitation at that slip, and he winced again. What 'dreams?' The question was sharp, accusing. Despite that, the pokemon did at least hold out the pills for him to take. Nothing much. Just some bad dreams. Ben tried to diffuse the situation, taking the aspirin handed to him, downing them quickly. Don't worry about it, okay? Please? But... Anubis...please? Ben winced again, moving to bury his face in the pillow. Sleep sounded wonderful right about now. But there was something else he needed to do first. ... The lucario regarded him solemnly, then sighed after a minute. After you get some rest, then. And you had better rest. Anubis huffed, reaching out to hold his trainer down as Ben tried to sit up. I meant now, not later. Can't rest just yet. Got worse news that can't wait, either. Ben sighed, levering himself up on one elbow. They suspect that you guys are the thieves that have been robbing everyone blind. By extension, that means I'm probably the mastermind behind it, of course. He didn't bother to try to keep the irritation out of his tone at the accusation. What?! The trainer winced at the yelp, the sharp sound aggravating his headache yet again. That's crazy. I know. However, it seems that the pokemon stealing are a bit of a match to us. Smeargle, lucario, eevee, mightyena...kinda fits a little too much. Wish I knew why. Ben rolled over onto his side. In the morning, we'll have to come up with a game plan on what to do next. He sighed, hoping the medication would kick in quickly and sleep would claim him so he didn't have to think any more. His fingers ran through the kit's soft fur as he lay there. He could tell she was was still watching him, worried, waiting. He felt like he was somehow missing the most important piece of the puzzle. But for the life of him, he couldn't figure out what it was. Edited by DarthEevee, Oct 16 2010, 10:33 AM.

Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord

Come back..! Ben bolted up, snatching at the air. He shook his head blearily as reality reasserted itself. By Cresselia... he sighed. Perhaps this was a punishment for thwarting the lord of nightmares. It seemed rather delayed for that, but at this point he was ready to grasp at straws. Dreaming again? Ben sighed as Anubis stood and padded over to look down at him. Yeah. Sorry to wake you up, too. He laid back down with a sigh. Stupid really, and I should try and get more sleep, he added, rolling over to have his back facing his companion. Hopefully he would get the hint. The lucario wasn't going to let it go that easily, though. What's all this about? What are these dreams? Have they been waking you up a lot? How long have they been going on? he persisted. Ben sighed again, rolling back onto his back. Obviously he wasn't going to be allowed to sleep yet. Interrogate much? Just eyes, Anubis...that's all. Eyes watching me. It's stupid. I know it's stupid, but it still bugs me. And no, just the past night or two, about waking up, that is. Ben raked his fingers through his hair irritably. I don't know why. Sorry. He just wanted to get back to sleep and forget this happened again. How long have you been having these dreams? Anubis persisted, however, and Ben grumbled, actually casting about in his mind for the answer. Not too long...just since around when the kit... He stopped, fingers feeling along his bedroll as he sat up abruptly. She's gone. What? Who are..? It took a few moments for Anubis to catch on, but he cut himself off, rocking back once it registered. What do you mean she's gone? He looked around warily, tassels flaring as he searched the tent quickly. She's gone. Never would have guessed. It's not like I said anything of the sort a moment ago. And I don't know how, Ben replied a touch snappishly, brows furrowed as he tried to get his mind into gear. The bandit, do you think? Ben considered that thoughtfully. Sure they hadn't been hit yet, but they were also copying his pokemon, so robbing him would be counter to their cover. This would also the first that he'd heard of them taking pokemon. It didn't fit. After all, pokemon thieves...what purpose would they have in stealing the kit? And for that matter, wouldn't they go for all his eevees if they took her? He stood abruptly and strode over to the box with Caligo, Faith and their kits, checking for them. Why not take all the kits then..? he mused aloud, reaching a hand down to run through Phoebus' fur, eliciting a sleepy murmur of confusion. His hand paused, fingering the coarse fur with a frown. Vague memories surfaced as he focused on that little detail. His frown deepened as he moved to scratch behind one of the pup's ears, brows furrowing. Pieces clicked at last. It wasn't the bandit. He straightened up abruptly, striding over to his pack and digging out clothes. What? How can you be sure? Anubis sounded skeptical. For one, would you have slept through a stranger sneaking around here? Or Jax, either? The pokemon was silent, and Ben shook his head. Jax, front and center, check out the tent, he called, somewhat muffled by the shirt he was pulling on. Make sure there 's no sign of anyone who wasn't supposed to be in her having come in. Anubis frowned as Jax surged to her feet, circling the tent, sniffing industriously. I don't think you'll find anything of that sort, but I want to be sure. Let me know if you find any sort of trail from the kit leading out, too. Some of the little doubts were starting to make sense. He still didn't know what some of the links were yet, but he almost had the chain worked out. Wait, woah, slow down. Where is all this coming from? Anubis broke into his thoughts, irritably. Ben paused in his dressing a moment. Look. Those dreams I've been having started about when that kit first hatched. Shortly after that, a rash of thefts started occurring around Slumber. Pokemon thieves. Lucario, mightyena, smeargle, vaporeon. And eevee, too. He picked Phoebus up in his hands, cradling the pup in the crook of his arm, measuring his weight and length. You're not suggesting the kit is in league with them, are you? The lucario was incredulous. It's preposterous. An eevee kit... She isn't an eevee, Anubis, Ben cut his companion off, striding over to his pack, still holding Phoebus. She has long, silky fur, longer than Phoebus or Selene's, finer. She fits on my shoulders almost exactly as Faith does now. As a leafeon. It was all starting to make some sense at last. He could hardly imagine why he hadn't put it all together before. He had been remarkably dense lately, apparently. Probably all those dreams and everything distracting me... he muttered aloud. Seriously now, I think you need to sleep. You're getting... Ben shook his head violently in negation, cutting the lucario off. No, Anubis, I'm not delirious. I'm being completely serious. It all fits. She refused to let anyone else touch her, or pick her up, remember? But her ears were triangular. He scratched behind Pheobus' long ears, as if to emphasise his statement. Anubis shifted, radiating skepticism. I'm serious. You saw her ears; I touched them, Anubis. Think about it. She filled up my lap when I put her there, but both Phoebus here and Selene fit comfortably in that same lap! Jax finished her circle, and raised her head, barking sharply. The lucario's eyes narrowed at whatever her message was. Ben didn't wait for his companion to translate. I'm right, aren't I? No one but us. And the kit's trail leading out, relatively fresh. Right? He rubbed at a temple with one hand, not waiting for an answer to that, either. I don't know what all is going on...but somehow, it's connected to the kit. He sat down abruptly, setting the eevee into his lap. Phoebus draped himself over one knee sleepily, looking up at the blind trainer curiously. I don't know, but it all fits. You're telling me that an eevee isn't really an eevee, just looks like one, and you're wanting me to take you seriously? You haven't been sleeping for goodness knows how long now, and having dreams about eyes... The jackal pokemon shook his head disbelievingly. It's delusional. Ben waved his hand dismissively. He could sense the thin thread of uncertainty under his companion's disbelief. Look, you either trust me or you don't. I've been dreaming about eyes, yes. They stare at me, as if waiting for something, or me to figure something out. And then, they leave. And come back. He tried to remember if the kit had been there last night, when he'd woken up, and sighed. Look. It sounds crazy, and I can't prove any of it, but explain to me why else she'd react so poorly to anyone wanting to touch her? I have no idea, but if your ludicrous notion is true, why would she let you? Imprinting? Maybe since I already had pretty much as soon as she hatched. Like, I was already on the secret before she got it set up or something. I don't know. Ben raked his fingers through his hair in irritation. You tell me what else fits, then? Anubis was silent for a minute. He sighed, finally muttering, What you're suggesting doesn't make any sense either. Ben wasn't certain he'd been meant to hear that, but decided to ignore it anyhow. She just looked like an eevee, apparently, but I don't see things that way, Anubis. It's been bugging me off and on, but I took everyone's word for it. Because I've had other things on my mind, he persisted. But she had fine fur. Silky, even. And short ears... Ben trailed off, and shook his head. Look. It doesn't matter right now. If she's really the bandit and she's run off again... He stopped again, then stood up abruptly, clutching Phoebus to his chest tightly enough that the pup squeaked in protest to being squashed. We have got to find her. Well obviously... No I mean like now. The thief, remember? Everyone's on high alert. They'll have had people watching this place, too. If she snuck out again, they'll likely catch her. Like you said, she's just a kit. Ben grabbed up his backpack, strode over to the box and scooped up Selene as well, settling both kits into the largest compartment of his pack. They filled up most of it, curling around each other, staring up at him in bemusement. He carefully slung it onto his back and pulled out two pokeballs, pressing the recall switches. Faith vanished with a startled squeal, Caligo more calmly. A third ball came out and Shinobi appeared as he pocketed the first two with a sigh. That kit is getting in over her head, Shinobi. We've got to find her before the authorities do. If you can, try and lead them off the trail. You're good at that. Buy us the time to get to her if you can. If you can't, wait for an opportunity, okay? There's a lot more than what it seems going on and we need to get the answers. For everyone's sakes. He strode for the door, burying one hand in the fur of Jax's shoulder. We've got to hurry, guys. Anubis, go with Shinobi. But... He could feel the conflicted emotions, the agitation, the confusion. Anubis didn't understand, and he wanted the answers. It was kind of hard, when he didn't have half of them himself yet, though. There isn't time, Anubis...go. Shinobi had already vanished. Anubis continued to hesitate. We need to find her and keep everyone from killing her or worse if we're going to get all the answers. Go! The lucario snarled irritably, as if he wanted to argue, but couldn't, and bolted out the door. Ben hesitated a moment longer, trying to think of anything important he might have forgotten. Let's go, Jax... Not thinking of anything, he turned and flipped aside the tent flap, stepping out into the evening. He didn't get more than two steps before he froze, Jax bristling beside him. They weren't alone. Someone had stepped in front of them, blocking the path. In a hurry? It was the policeman from the day before, and he fought down the urge to curse his luck. There wasn't time for this, but there was no way to simply brush him off. He should have expected this, anyhow. It was good that Anubis and Shinobi had gotten away already, though. This was likely going to end up messy. As a matter of fact, yes. One of my kits ran off, and I need to go and find her before she gets hurt, he replied after a pause, unable to keep irritation out of his voice completely, but trying to coat it in an veneer of reasonability. Oh? Your lucario left in a huge hurry a few seconds ago. Is that why he was going so fast? A corner of his mind noted that there was no mention of Shinobi in that. Good old ninja... He cast the thought aside, however. There was no need to worry about it, after all. Yes, to look for the kit. We're very worried, you see. She's very young. What sort of kit was this? Ben could sense that there were others out there, in the darkness. Three of them. Waiting. This was fast running him out of patience. But that was a loaded question. What was she, indeed? That was what he'd dearly like to know, himself. ...an eevee. He hesitated a moment too long before answering. Really? You sound so certain. Ben kept silent, not trusting himself to reply to that. I'm afraid that I can't let you leave. When your pokemon return, they will be detained as well, while we investigate... Ben cut him off. Sorry, no. What? Well, that had been completely unexpected to the fellow. Good. Ben tightened his grip on the fur of Jax's shoulder. I can't stay here. I have to find my pokemon. And the rest of the pieces to this puzzle. I'm afraid that isn't an option. We'll send some officers... I wasn't asking if it was okay. Nor was I asking for your help. Feel free to search the tent. Ben drug his pack irritably from over his shoulder, and tugged open the large main compartment. Two pairs of eyes blinked up at the officer, the kits curled around each other comfortably. If I could fit all of whatever the heck has been stolen of late in there with them, let me know, too. He swung it onto his back once more and caught hold of Jax's shoulder with his other hand. He was even more grateful now that he'd taken the care to stow them in the pack and that he rarely unpacked any of his important gear. I'm going. Now. His brusqueness had certainly set them aback, but they weren't going to simply step aside. No, you are going to stay right here... Ben turned away. Talking was going to get them nowhere. Jax slicked her ears back, taking his movement as a cue to let out a fearsome bellow. It interrupted the cop's statement, causing him to fall back with a squawk of surprise. Ben flinched at the volume, but recovered faster than the policemen, not having been the focus of it. The roar echoed and reverberated, digging into the primal subconscious and all that which went bump in the night. It was a cry composed of terror and power, and it bought the time needed. Ben pulled himself aboard the snowy canine as she crouched low beside him. As soon as his legs tightened around her ribcage, Jax uncoiled, her leaps propelling her clear over the head of the nearest and bolted into the wood. Roar works on people as well as pokemon, does it? Suppose I shouldn't be surprised... Ben muttered as they fled, more than half his attention on the fading shouts behind them. That went so well, don't you think, Jax? Ben sighed, once they had slowed several minutes later. He couldn't keep the sarcasm out of his tone, but it didn't really matter. His arcanine knew it wasn't directed at her, and she merely flicked an ear back to listen as he continued. I'm sure they're going to be so willing to listen to me after that. This was going to go over so well with the OME, too. Resisting arrest, suspicion of theft...yeah. Granted, they hadn't ever specifically stated they intended to arrest him, but his refusal to remain was probably not the wisest course. If he had a fault, though, it was not completely trusting authority and those that wielded it. Particularly not if he had no reason to trust them. However, if he could get all the pieces together before they arrested him or something, he could probably clear his name. Hopefully. It was still a mess and a headache that he would rather not deal with. The blind trainer sighed, turning his thoughts away and shifting his seat so he could check on the kits. The two pairs of dark, confused eyes stared up at him as he resettled the backpack into his lap. I'm sorry, you two. Have a bit of patience in there...we're not out of the woods yet. Jax rumbled beneath him, grumbling a bit at that statement, and he smiled faintly. He couldn't understand her, but he thought he had a fair guess as to what she was saying. Yes, granted, we ran right into them of our own volition in the first place, but that's not the point right now. We need to get back to Slumber somehow, without getting arrested for real this time. And of course we also need to find the kit and the others before the police do, too. Particularly if he wanted to clear his name in a reasonable amount of time. Jax turned and trotted at an angle towards Slumber, ears flicking restlessly. Ben tried to fit the last pieces into place as they loped through the wood, finding that every time he thought he had it, something didn't quite fit right. The kit had run off, tonight for certain, possibly last night as well, or other nights. It was possible, if not probable, she was the one stealing everything. The dreams; the eyes watched him, left, returned in his dreams...what was it all supposed to mean? Did her real self, the one she wouldn't let anyone see, have red eyes? His pokemon weren't thieves, yet people had seen them stealing, it was said. How did it all fit? Everyone had assumed the kit was an eevee but, she wasn't actually. That was the one thing he was certain of, even if Anubis thought he was going crazy for making that claim. Just what are you, little lady? he muttered aloud, without realizing it. She had trusted him, as much as she had trusted anything. He had been the first to touch her as she broke her shell, and almost certainly the first thing she had seen to boot. But then, why did everyone see her as an eevee? How was it possible? He was the only one that had she had allowed to touch her in any fashion. That much was certain as well. Why, he still didn't know, but he wasn't certain it mattered at the moment. So, something that deceived the eyes, an illusion? No pokemon he knew did anything of that sort, though. A ditto transformed into other pokemon, true enough, but that was a complete process, where she should have been the same physical shape. She was definitely a canine, as well, yet...what was she? He had thought he knew every canine pokemon that existed, but she didn't seem to fit a single one. BEN! Jax pulled up sharp as the shout rang in their ears, jarring Ben out of his thoughts. Anubis? Ben half turned, cocking his head as he pinpointed the lucario's agitated aura barreling towards them. What..? Town Square! Now! the lucario broke in, skidding to a halt a few feet away, turning as he did so. They found her, hurry! What?! But the lucario was gone already. Anubis was right, there was no time to think. Ben clutched handfuls of the thick mane, burying his face in the white fur. He shifted, trying to protect the kits in the pack on his lap, now pressed between him and the arcanine, flattening himself along her spine as best he could. Jax, fly. They had to be there at least a minute ago. Jax barked once, then launched forward. Within seconds, she hit sixty, still speeding up, leveling out further. It was at once a fluid run, and jarring, as he clung to her back. Each impact rattled his bones as she bunched up like a spring, only to launch into the air for an instant of glorious flight, and then it repeated. Had Shinobi had remained behind while the Lucario hunted for him? Probably. But how long had it taken the warrior to find them? How much time did they have? Few things matched the speed of an arcanine, however, when they chose to go all out. It seemed like only moments had passed at the breathtaking pace and they were already passing the first buildings in the city. Ben flinched as they skidded around a corner, hardly seeming to lose speed. Jax... The wind tore away the name almost before even his own ears registered it. It was unnerving, racing through the city like this. He half-expected them to crash into a wall any moment. The dull roar of an angry crowd became audible ahead, rapidly rising in volume, and Ben tensed. And still Jax didn't slow. Jax..! He tugged slightly at her fur, but she kept going, full tilt. The last thing he needed was plowing through a mob of people at seventy being added to the list of things he'd done this night. Another corner and they were there, the anger a painful spear to his senses, from the shouting of about a dozen folk, auras hot and prickly as a cactus. And under it all, a thread of pure terror, icing over all the fury. Jax's muscles bunched under him, and he froze in shock. She wasn't going to... But she was. Over the heads of the crowd she launched herself, and Ben as well. The landing rattled his teeth, and Jax's paws skidded on the concrete as she tried to halt her remaining forward momentum. Claws scrabbled for purchase, turning broadside to the crowd, bracing herself between them and the focus of their ire. Ben resisted the urge to fling himself off the arcanine, mindful of the kits he was trying not to squash beneath his chest. As she came to a complete halt at last, bristling, he slid off her far side, depositing the pack at her feet as he focused on the terrified aura before him. Shh... he tried, but it was lost in the outraged roar from the crowd and Jax's answering snarl of warning. He turned slightly. Jax, he warned as she snarled again. They couldn't have more violence right now. The fear spiked sharply, and he whirled back to the kit, pouncing upon her before she could bolt. Wait, calm down, it's all right. You're safe with me... She didn't appear to hear him, flailing in his arms as he crouched there, pulling her close to his chest as she fought to get free. He wasn't certain she even recognized him at the moment. All the violent auras pounded against his othersense, as the kits fear clawed through all of it, making his head ache again. Shh...it's all right... Claws scrabbled against his coat as the shouting increased in volume again, drowning him out. Could people please calm down? It was obvious that wasn't going to get the increasingly irate crowd to listen to him. Nor was he calming the kit any, as one paw raked at his chin, startling him into nearly losing his grip for a moment. He redoubled his grip and winced as paws shoved against his chest, fighting to get free. Would you just listen for a moment, please? he practically shouted. Whether it was a the crowd or the kit, he wasn't sure it mattered. Neither of them listened. The crowd jeered as he stood up, still holding the kit tightly as she fought to get free. The emotions and energy were reaching a fever pitch, pounding against his Aura sense, as the shouts of the crowd assaulted his eardrums, compounding the issue. Please, everyone..! He tried again, but it was futile. They weren't going to listen, she wasn't going to stop trying to escape, and it all threatened to overwhelm him. ENOUGH! Even Ben flinched at the shout from behind him. Paws thudded to the pavement beside him a moment later, punctuating the stunned silence. The kit in his arms froze, and he could feel her heart hammering against his fingers as he fixed his grip at last, holding her close. Anubis straightened and leaped to the white arcanine's back in one smooth motion, one paw jabbing at the crowd accusingly. All noise, no sense, no reason, no thinking going on! Fools, all of you. You shout about being deceived, about being stolen from, and yet you don't even bother to find out if you have any truth behind your accusations. As soon as you have a target, you cease to think! he snarled at them, wrathfully. Ben stood behind the arcanine, listening with just as much shock as the crowd. Anubis usually avoided speaking to anyone other than Ben comprehensibly. He seemed to hate putting himself forward, getting others to pay attention to him. And yet, here he was, lecturing a good dozen or so individuals. Maybe, just maybe, if you'd actually listen for a moment, instead of shouting over each other, you'd realize how foolish you all sound! Maybe if you took a second to actually think instead of parrot mindlessly, you'd realize how stupid this is. But no, there's no need to make sure you're actually accusing the right person, no...you know best, right? Jax rumbled a counterpoint to the lucario's higher pitch. She stood, legs braced, as he swiped his paw through the air for emphasis, the tassels flaring as he swept his gaze over the crowd, and barked a derisive laugh. Now, we owe you nothing, not even an explanation, but yet that's what he was trying to give you, even if you don't deserve it. And all you seem able to think about is how you are being denied your justice! The lucario paused, as if musing over that word. His eyes narrowed. Justice...pah. As if you even know what you're talking about when you speak of getting justice. Anubis' teeth flashed in bitter disgust, as if tasting something foul. Justice is finding out the truth and acting upon it rationally. You all are letting your emotions get the better of you, not even thinking any more. A maddened, mindless mob, acting on instinct, slavering for blood, not justice... He shook his head, at a loss for words. Anubis, Ben found his voice at last, moving up to stand beside Jax instead of behind her. He continued to hold the kit to his chest as she hung from his hands, rigid with fear. Surprise warred with respect as he took over. Thanks. I think it's my turn though. Someone emerged from the crowd, however, before he could speak up again. No idea what justice is, is that it? And what are we supposed to think, when you and all of his pokemon have been systematically robbing us blind... I AM NOT A THIEF! Anubis roared, and Ben quickly stepped between him and the speaker, raising his free hand towards the lucario in a restraining gesture. He bristled, fangs bared in fury as he crouched atop Jax, but he stayed his leap, red eyes glaring balefully down at his accuser. Say that again and I'll feed you your own liver... Enough, Ben said quietly, and turned his attention back to the crowd and its spokesperson. For his part, the other trainer had stepped back, stunned by the lucario's vehement reaction. Anubis is not a thief, and never will he be. As you may have noted, he has a rather strong perception of justice. And you still think he's a thief, despite that. My pokemon are not thieves, however. Are you saying that's not your leafeon, then? Sure looks silver to me. The tone was scathing, but a flash of red punctuated his statement, Faith materializing out of her pokeball even as the word 'silver' left his tongue. A ripple of shock further melted the furious energies, giving Ben some relief. The leafeon could care less about the crowd staring at her in bemusement, however, instead turning to give her trainer what-for. Her irate harangue was forestalled however at the sight of Ben holding a copy of herself. Leeeea! she yelped indignantly after a moment of stunned silence, hurt and dismay radiating off her. Calm down, Faith. You haven't been replaced... Ben sighed faintly at her reaction. The two eevee kits bolted out of his pack to press against their mother, staring up uneasily at the pokemon he was holding. He could feel her trembling wildly. As you can see, things aren't always what you think they are. This isn't my leafeon, as you can see, he shifted his grip on the kit in his arms, then freed one hand to gesture at Faith, because there she is. So, are you trying to say that that pokemon has been waltzing around looking like your pokemon and stealing from us? Ben frowned a little. The scathing tone did not help the fellow as Ben took a deep breath. So, what, we've got a ditto here, masquerading as your pokemon and stealing our things. Who's to say it's not yours and you're pulling some sort of... I don't own a ditto. Never have, Ben cut that off before it could even get started, waving his free hand in an irritable dismissal of the notion. And how are we supposed to know that? Ben gritted his teeth, biting off any number of scathing retorts he wanted to make to that accusatory question. Care to check my pokedex? He pulled it out of his pocket and held it out, trying his best to radiate amiable helpfulness instead of the frustration he was feeling. He could tell that his willingness to let them see that had set them back again. So, if that pokemon's not yours, then... He could see where that was going and he didn't like that, either. I didn't say that. Well, that set a vulpix among the torchics. A low muttering spread through the crowd, and he resisted the urge to step back a pace. It didn't sound mutinous yet... You just said it wasn't yours. Care to contradict yourself any more? The speaker stepped forward, jabbing a finger accusingly. Gonna say you're not a liar still? Ben stifled the sigh as he finally placed the voice and aura. It was the irritable fellow that had been accusing Caligo of stealing yesterday. Lovely. Yes, I am. He smiled thinly. I said this wasn't my leafeon. Which she isn't. He carefully smoothed down the soft fur, tracing a finger around the short ears soothingly. That isn't to say... Yeah, and you also said you didn't own a ditto, the kid broke in, accusingly once more. Anubis hopped down from Jax to stand beside Ben, no longer snarling, but still tense and ready to act upon a moment's notice. His feet were placed slightly apart as he balanced on his toes, head lowered, paws held rigid along his sides, tail curved in a stiff arc behind him. That's because I don't. So what are you holding then? Arms folded across his chest belligerently, and Ben clenched his fist at his side, forcefully reminding himself that wiping the smirk he felt sure was present off this brat's face wasn't going to solve anything. But it was so tempting. I don't know, he replied honestly, taking a deep breath. This was going to go over well. HAH! Ben tensed, unconsciously adopting the same pose as the lucario beside him, brows furrowing. Run out of lies have you? It was the wrong thing to say. I do not lie. The words were colder than ice, quiet and deadly. The murmuring stopped as they seemed to echo across the square. Silence reigned for a moment, then the speaker rallied. Well, since it's not your leafeon, but looks like her, it's got to be a ditto, unless you're going to try and claim its Mew... The tone was full of irony, and Ben shifted slightly. She is not a ditto, nor Mew, he replied just as quietly as before, deadly calm, emphasizing the feminine pronoun carefully. A ditto didn't have a gender, nor did Mew. Yet this kit was as definitively feminine as Jax or Faith. It went right over the idiot's head. Well, how else does it look like... That's it right there. How does she look like my pokemon. Your eyes lie. He traced a finger over a triangular ear, once more emphasizing the pronoun. She is, for one, definitely female. And she only LOOKS like my pokemon. A ditto's transformation is complete... Looks like your pokemon. Ben resisted the urge to growl like his companions at the disbelieving skepticism. Why don't you try speaking English this time? Baka ni, Ben spat, purposely changing to a different language. Speak English indeed. It startled everyone into silence once more, which had been his goal. Good. He took the moment of confusion and thrust the kit at Anubis, feeling her fear stab at his aura sense once more, almost burying the lucario's surprised reaction. Your eyes deceive you. What you see isn't what's really there. Anubis' ears shot straight up as he caught the kit up in his paws, despite her renewed attempts to escape. He looked down at the 'leafeon' in his paws, then over at Ben again, thoughtfully. Ben shook his head slightly as incomprehension ruled still. Look, the thing is, she's not what she appears to be. However, that doesn't mean that it's anything more than an illusion, to fool the eyes, but nothing else. Transformation is more complete than that. That English enough for you? he finished a little irritably. He waited a moment. Nothing. He fought the temptation to throw his hands in the air. Whatever, then. Believe what you want, I guess, since you're not going to listen to me. He turned away from the crowd. Wait... Ben paused at that, head tilting to one side, listening. So you are saying that it's yours then, whatever it is? Ben nodded once to that warily, bracing himself. So then you've been harboring the thief! Big surprise, that accusation. Ben rubbed at his temple with one hand, gathering his resources. Why don't you just come clean and give yourself up already? Slow down, kid, Ben sighed, tiredly. This was getting old. 'Round and round we go...' The kid puffed up indignantly once more, but Ben continued before he could build up to whatever he was planning on. I do not condone thievery, nor do I support it. I... Once more, he was interrupted. But you're still saying that's your pokemon... A growl of assent from the crowd. Or are you... Maybe if you'd ever let me finish saying anything, you'd actually learn something! Ben snapped finally, tired of all the wild accusations. He waved a hand in the air, wildly, Go ahead, assume whatever you want. You're going to do that whether I try to give you an explanation or not. Go ahead and assume that I knew all about everything that was going on. I must be omniscient after all since it's my pokemon that just hatched that's being naughty. I obviously know absolutely everything that's going to happen, or will. Or maybe that's supposed to be you. Ben could taste the growing ire of the fellow, like bile in the back of his throat, but he didn't care any more. Yes, go ahead and assume that you know everything about me, since apparently you know more about me and what I know than I do. Good day. He'd had enough of trying to give them explanations. He pulled another pokeball out and released its occupant. Cal, Faith, get the kits. The vaporeon appeared in a flash of red, took one look around, and sneezed, trotting over to his family. The two eeveelutions each scooped up one kit and bounded out of the square. Ben turned to follow them. Don't walk away from me! Ben ignored the shout, taking a step away, Anubis turning to follow him, holding the kit carefully. A flash of energy, and Jax growled softly as a new aura materialized. I said don't walk away from me. Ben frowned slightly, lowering his head as he fought to focus his senses. His head was pounding again. You want a battle now? Ben stopped, reaching over to grip the lucario's shoulder. Jax snarled softly as Ben cocked his head, thoughtful a moment. He held the pose a moment, as if trying to hear something. After a moment of seeking, he nodded to himself, once. Just as he'd suspected. Bad idea. His arcanine crouched low, preparing to pounce, but he forestalled her. No Jax, heel. Jax blinked, but backed off, returning to his side. She couldn't help but glance over her shoulder at the trainer and his pokemon, though, uneasy. I'd quit while you were ahead if I were you. He took another step. Walking away? Don't you dare...you're going down. Felicity, get him! Ben sighed. You know, you really don't listen, do you? What? The pokemon bounded in front of him, hissing, and he stopped again. Persian? Probably. He paid it little mind, as Jax bristled. He patted her shoulder reassuringly, cocking his head to 'listen' again. You think I'm not worth your time? Pretty cocky, that. Just a bit more time... Pay attention, and make sure you know all the facts before you jump to conclusions. Sound familiar? Felicity, he's trying to distract us, get the arcanine! The cat's snarl increased in pitch, and Ben caught at Jax's thick mane of fur to hold her back. No? Shame... The ground exploded outwards under the persian, causing her to shriek in surprise. Assuming you knew where all the pokemon I had with me was a bit cocky, no? Ben added, quietly. Claws gouged at black fur, but the leering face gave her pause, and Shinobi lunged, teeth snapping like a steel trap. But..! The trainer's shock was quite clear again, but Ben ignored it. And now, I'm going to go and get things sorted out, and see if I can't figure out where all the stolen items got taken so they can be returned. Not that this punk deserved whatever he'd had stolen from him, but Ben didn't care at this point. Which is what I've been trying to do this entire time. Good day. They didn't need any further explanation than that, and that was all he needed. Once around a corner, Ben paused a moment to make sure everyone was present. Always handy to have a ninja, eh, Shinobi? Ben spoke quietly, reaching down to scratch behind one ear as the mightyena brushed past him. Don't let her go for anything, Anubis. There's still a lot we need to do and not a lot of time. The police were likely going to be breathing down his neck far too soon, and they still had to figure out what exactly was going on with this mysterious kit and what she was. Obviously. That had been my intention, Anubis replied, then hesitated. And...I see what you mean. Ben smiled faintly. That was probably as close to an apology as he was going to get from the lucario, but he was used to that by now. Told you so. Edited by DarthEevee, Oct 11 2010, 02:26 PM.

Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord
|
Yen! the mightyena yelped, crow-hopping away from his trainer, ears flattening against his skull unhappily. Caligo looked up sharply from where he lay at the sudden sound, draped over Faith possessively, keeping an eye on their kits. He watched his father a moment more, then sighed and turned his attention back to the rest of his family just in time to pounce upon Selene and deposit her back beside her mother with a disappointed squeak. Would you hold still? Ben grumbled, moving over to try and finish examining his ninja's shoulder. I'm sorry that it hurts, Shinobi. I just want to make sure it's not serious, so get back over here. The group had retreated to the edge of town, where he had insisted they pause to check on the limping wolf. They didn't have a lot of time to figure out what all was going on, but that was currently secondary to seeing to the health of his ninja. Yen... Shinobi growled uneasily, sliding out from under Ben's fingers as the blind trainer made another grab for him. You big baby...I could always recall you instead. Ben dropped his hands to his side, waiting. The hyena huffed slightly, then limped back over to stand beside him. That's a good boy, he smiled, giving a good scratch behind his ear. Shinobi grumbled a little at that, but didn't fight as Ben carefully dug his fingers through the fur on his shoulder. He flinched as the trainer found the gashes again, but didn't pull away. Fine. That's a good ninja. Better? Ben corrected as he finished the examination and dropped his hands, vaguely amused. The mightyena barked, once. Thought so. It looks like it'll be fine, though at least, so if you want to stay out for the moment, no worries. Don't go making any more holes until we can get it patched up, and if we end up making a run, you're going back into the ball, got it? He gave the dark wolf another scratch and turned his attention away, now that he was sure his companion hadn't been very badly injured by the persian. Now that that's out of the way...we have you to deal with, my mystery lady. He turned his attention to Anubis and the kit trying to vanish into his arms. Are you still pretending to be Faith? He reached over, cautiously scratching behind one of her ears. You aren't fooling anyone here...so why don't you try being yourself? Teddy bear, remember... Ben choked on his laughter as Anubis piped up unexpectedly, holding onto the kit. All of us. Probably too much so sometimes... Ben winced a little at that. They he mostly, if he was honest, with everyone else following his lead had been pretty much catering to her desires since she was born. He had done the same with Faith, Caligo, and even the twins, though, without too much damage done to anyone. After all, they were just babies; what could they do? Apparently a lot more damage than he ever imagined. Ben took the kit from Anubis with a sigh. No use dwelling on past mistakes, though. We've got more important issues to get straightened out. And you, child, seem to be at the center of pretty much all of it. So, been out at night, sneaking around and collecting shiny baubles, by any chance? Silence. Just what are you, milady? He didn't get an answer to that either, but he wasn't expecting one, and didn't wait. What does she look like right now, anyhow, Anubis? he sighed, tracing a finger around her ear thoughtfully. Still like Faith. Are you surprised? Not in the slightest. Ben sighed, pulling his pokedex out and flipping it open. I suppose we can see what this has to say, at least. he commented, waiting for it to scan the kit. Error. No data found. There was a stunned silence after that proclamation. Ben blinked in bemusement as he stood there, holding the device. Finally, he found his voice again. 'No data?' What do you mean, 'no data?' Anubis padded over, liberating the device from his trainer as it repeated the previous statement. Well, I think it's obvious what 'no data' means. You think this thing's busted somehow? He prodded at it curiously, flipping it around in his paws, huffing as it beeped and rattled off the information about lucario after a moment. I guess not, but what the heck? That's what I think we'd all like to know, Anubis... Ben turned his attention back to the kit in his arms. Enough of the games and deceptions, all right? All I'm asking for is a little honesty at this point. I can't see, if you haven't figured that out. I don't take things on that value. Pretending to be someone else around me like you are doesn't do you any good. Can we drop the charade, please? Tension was thick in the air, making him feel as if he might choke on it as he waited. It was unbearable, almost, and he began to pace back and forth, while waiting for something to happen. But, silence continued to reign as seconds ticked past, then minutes. Ben sighed at last. Stop pretending. Just...be you. What the..? Ben stopped dead as Anubis made the exclamation. Shinobi and Jax pricked their ears, looking over as well. He frowned a little as the kit's aura seemed to...shimmer, really, was the only word he could find for it. That is creepy. And what are you, then? Ben could feel all the eyes in the clearing on him and the kit in his arms. She huddled in them dejectedly, but defiant in the face of the scrutiny. Other than that odd fluctuation, though, he couldn't tell what had happened. What? Ben felt left out of the loop for the first time in ages due to his inability to see, which irritated him. A lot. He didn't like being reminded that sight was actually important on occasion. What's up now? What happened? He managed to keep from snapping at his companions, but only just. Mmm...foxy lady. Ben frowned as Anubis padded over, executing a courtly bow to the pokemon in his arms. A surge of embarrassment and irritation, almost like the flavor of strawberries, filled the air. The blind trainer frowned in the lucario's direction. Well, she is. You're not being helpful. Ben couldn't really glower, but he could project disapproval. Aww. Ben stifled a frustrated sigh as the lucario pretended to pout. Fine. She's a black fox. Better? Ben rocked back on his heels as the kit gave Anubis a nasty look before burying her face in his sleeve. He processed that, scratching absently behind her ears. And I don't mean that she's a vulpix that's black, either. I didn't figure...but... Anubis didn't let him finish. Yeah, I know. Ben began to pace again, trying to figure out what that was supposed to mean. There was absolutely not a single pokemon that he knew of that was a black fox. Nor could he think of any pokemon, move or ability that would allow one to appear as another pokemon, without actually transforming into it. Where the hell did they get those eggs? he wondered aloud at last, disbelief coloring his voice. I mean, not even the pokedex recognizes her. He thought a moment, trying to recall if he'd heard anything about an update for it being in the works, but nothing came to mind, not even from OME messages. There wouldn't necessarily be much point in asking her for a name. Being a baby, how would she know? Hold it right there! Ben and Anubis whirled in unison, falling into wary crouches as Jax snarled in surprise at the shout. Several officers crowded out of the city, led by one that was getting irritatingly familiar. Try that stunt again and we'll shoot. The kit scrabbled at his coat frantically, her aura shimmering oddly once more. He straightened up, carefully. Good...morning officers, Ben took a moment to figure out the approximate time as he greeted them. There was a pause, as his pleasant tone confused them, and he exploited it ruthlessly, continuing in the same voice. I've found the culprit of the pokemon thefts. I was just about to persuade her to show me where she's hidden the stolen articles so I could return them. You...ah...what? He waited impassively, letting them process the statement. Jax and Anubis stood on either side of him, tense and wary. Finally, after a momentary eternity, the policeman spoke again. So...where is she? I'm holding her. He braced for the surge of disbelief that came, then waited for the question. You...are holding your smeargle, you know... the fellow spoke again, a bit delicately, as if speaking to a child. Ben gritted his teeth. He'd forgotten about Ross. You are being very irritating, you know that? he muttered at the pokemon in his arms. She continued to claw at his coat, as if trying to retreat inside. He sighed and reached into his pocket, making another face as every one of the officers in the area went tense. In one quick motion, he pulled his last pokeball out and hit the release catch. THERE is my smeargle, officer. Any other questions? ... Ben could tell they wanted to make a few comments, probably inappropriate for an on-duty policeman. He wasn't going to make it any easier on them, and he frankly didn't really care what they thought of him at this point. He really didn't much care for them either. As you can see, the thief has been appearing as my pokemon, but isn't actually any of my pokemon, he spoke out again, gesturing around the clearing towards each of his six companions and two eevee kits, considering all of them are right here, as well. The officers muttered for a minute or two, then the spokesman stepped forward once more, almost reluctantly. ...Right. Well, then, we'll take her into our custody and... Sorry again. Ben smiled politely, but there was no warmth behind it. What? I'm not going to turn her over to you. As a Private, First Class, in the Opadekka Military Establishment, I have just as much authority to apprehend criminals such as her. I shall return the items as soon as I figure out where they are, and take care of this pokemon. The OME is well prepared to deal with potentially troublesome pokemon. He wondered slightly at the surge of resentment at the simple statement. Certainly, he was showing them up, but this seemed not just directed at him for that. He brushed it aside, however. I'm sorry to have troubled you, and I thank you for your efforts. Ben bowed to them, still holding the kit tightly. I hope that this resolves matters to your satisfaction? It...does. It was obvious he wanted to answer otherwise, but saw no way not to. A pause, as if somethign else had just occurred to him. What of your eevee kit? Did you find her? he added at last. Ben turned away, gesturing for his pokemon to follow. Oh, yes, I did. Thank you for your concern. The officer's gaze flicked to the two eeveelutions and the twins, then back over. Let the cops wonder. He just wanted to get the last of this mess handled and see about getting out of here as quickly as possible. Let's go, guys. He was getting so tired of the cold... It took most of the rest of the day to get the kit to reveal her hiding spot, collect everything, and hand it over to the police, and so it was with a weary sigh that Ben finally tied the tent shut and plopped himself onto the floor in the middle of it, Jax obligingly offering herself as a backrest. So then, mysterious lady, little fox, all is well that ends well, I suppose, but you had better never consider a life of thievery again. It doesn't pay in the end, as you hopefully have learned from this mess. You already owe me for masquerading as my team and getting them all accused of your thefts. He gathered the kit into his lap and stroked her back idly, thinking. I doubt I'm going to get any answers for my remaining questions from you, however. And I doubt those that hosted the tournament are going to be helpful, either. So, I suppose my curiosity must remain unsatisfied. But now, we have to decide what to do with you. She stirred uneasily in his lap as he spoke, glancing over and meeting Anubis' crimson gaze, eyes almost luminescent in the half-light of his corner. We're onto you, foxy lady. You're not going to sneak past me again so easily, I promise you that. She huffed, flattening herself back into Ben's lap uneasily. So, what are you, then? Anubis padded over, dropping down to sit practically nose-to-nose with her. She sneezed, and he jerked back, pawing at his face and Ben laughed. I hope you're brighter than that mob, Anubis, and remember to listen. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Patience. I get it already, the lucario swatted at the air just beyond his trainer's nose. Ben didn't even flinch, still chuckling as the lucario retreated back to his corner. I think for now, we're going to keep our eyes on you, mystery lady...Mystique. He scratched the kit's back, smiling faintly. It fits, I think, don't you? Anubis snorted softly, and the blind trainer chuckled again. Your opinion doesn't matter here, pal, he called back, and settled against Jax's comfortable bulk, humming faintly as the kit stared up at him, considering the statement. She settled down at last, satisfied. Zorua, she sighed, closing her eyes. Edited by DarthEevee, Oct 12 2010, 12:18 AM.

Word Count: 18,881 Summary: Ben's egg from the tournament hatches at last, into a very shy, reclusive eevee. Shortly afterwards, a string of thefts start occurring throughout Slumber, and Ben finds himself and his pokemon standing accused of them. Can he figure out the mystery in time to clear his name and figure out what is wrong with his new pokemon before it's too late? I usually put this first, but it seemed better suited as the last post for this freeform for some reason, possibly the below, particularly the Author's Notes. I feel like those should be after the story, not before, I guess. ADDENDUM: 'Don't judge a book by its cover.' Or as I stated originally because I couldn't think of that, 'Don't take things at face value.' Important lesson in life. October Contest entering since this hasn't been graded yet and it just got put up. Uh...yeah. REWARDS AUTHOR'S NOTES

Sorry to inflict this onto you, laptop went to servicing and I needed to jolt things down without transferring them to MS Word... In any case, that probably summarizes everything into... Excellent job! I liked the story a lot and I couldn't do justice to it in the short critique (so sorry!). I planned to address at least 12 aspects of the text, but abbreviated the Smod to about 5 pages. That said, this is an excellent story. I'll be using my Smod as a sample review reference, if you don't mind.
0.5 to me. Thanks for the read, I really loved it! Edited by Kari, Oct 16 2010, 08:45 AM.

I kinda wish I could give ya more, for taking on such a monster, but rules are rules. Many thanks, and I am glad that it was a good read at least, so as not to make its length that much more onerous. I must say that I greatly appreciate the review and critique of the story, as it gave me a lot of insight as to how my stories are perceived by others. If you ever want to critique any of my other freeforms, feel welcome. I've occasionally entertained the notion of potentially writing more seriously, and any and all advice as to how I could improve my writing and so forth is welcome. Secondary note, as I mentioned in chat, I do not capitalize the names of pokemon (like pikachu or abra) or even pokemon itself, because of how I perceive the world. Talking about the Pokemon games, yes, it's a proper noun, but going into a universe where pokemon are the animals of the world, well, one doesn't capitalize animal. Or rat, or fox, or so on. I view the pokemon's names as their common names, and so don't capitalize them. And no, I'm not assuming that made any difference at all in my grade. I shall bank the 26 for the moment, and await the decision on Heart of Justice. No rush at all, since as I understand it, it won't be until BW comes out in English that it'll be integrated to Legacy. Also making a note here that Frac, Blakey and Kari agreed that seeing as BW isn't going to be integrated, and Zorua is not in the calculator, among other things, Mysti will be a tagalong for now, in an egg slot instead of a party slot, not affecting APL, and not usable in battles or any such.Thank you again for the grade. *bows* |
