Been a while since I've been here,

The comment flew right over Steely's head for a second before she remembered what Zelda was talking about. They weren't at the exact same place, but this was the forest that Steely had caught Zelda in, all that time ago. How long had it been? Steely couldn't remember.

She looked back at Alex and his new blissey, pondering how best to go about this, while Hurricane was doing stretches off to the side, and eyeing Alex quietly. Not in the same way that Chaos and Maelstrom had before, but more like the lucario was fighting with something within his own mind.

While Zelda was peacefully reveling in the old forest and Hurricane was pondering, Steely figured they were far enough away from Deepwood and let Raikou back out. The cat shook himself off, looking around gleefully, only for it to crumble when he saw all the trees.

I thought we were done with this tree stuff, seriously,

"Sorry buddy, but not for a while. We won't be in them too long right now, anyways," Steely reached up and patted the best on the shoulder while he grumbled, smoothing out his fur while Alex got prepared or... whatever. The cat's ears flicked up at the sounds around them, and he scanned their group to see Alex but no Cerby. The cat tilted his head, Are we searching for the others now?

"Sure going to try, yeah. We'll see if either of them have come out this far," Steely calmly reached up and threw her arms over Raikou's back, while he helpfully leaned down, so she could scramble up onto his striped back and sit in the middle of the purple cloud-cape. The cloud wafted around and reformed partially around her, quietly swirling in that magical, legendary way it did.

So, um. When are we going to tell him? Hurricane asked quietly, padding up next to Zelda and wringing his paws together. The only indication that Zelda had heard him was her ears slicking back.

Tell him what? she huffed quietly, glaring sideways at the lucario. Hurricane continued to look uneasy.

...everything?

...never. So keep quiet about it, she flicked her tail at him, turning her head to stare, as if emphasizing the unspoken continuation of her sentence. Or else you'll be a drooling pile of mush. Hurricane wrinkled his muzzle, and the two Pokemon continued to have a staring contest.

"Come to think of it, I bet Ravage would like to stretch his wings," Steely pushed her coat to the side and pulled off a Luxury Ball, releasing the critter inside. Steely jumped a little when it was nothing more then a purple blur that eventually zipped to settle on her head. Unfortunately, a crobat is a lot bigger then a zubat, and Ravage couldn't roost on Steely's head anymore. "Woah, Ravage, down boy. You're way to big to sit up there anymore," she reached up, carefully extracting the crobat till he got the point and fluttered next to her, four wings beating like a humming bird's. Steely took a second to marvel at him... she had never really noticed how damn fast the bats were. It wasn't exactly like she thought Hashmal and Tox were slow, but still...

So, where is Alex going to sit, then? Zelda said suddenly, looking up at Steely sitting on the thunder beast. Raider didn't seem to care, looking through the trees and waiting for them to get a move on. The question kind of took Steely by surprise, and she looked around. Realization went 'thunk' in the back of her head when she realized the obvious.

"Uh... up here, I guess," she still didn't seem to quite get it, and waved Alex over, reaching down to help him up as Raikou helpfully leaned down a little.

This is going to be fun, Zelda chuckled, shaking her head as she watched. Oh boy, was it ever going to be fun.

Once they'd found their way into the forest proper, Alex recalled Penny - there wouldn't be room for her on Raikou, and she wouldn't be able to keep up if she was outside. Next to him, Guru regarded the thunder legend with skepticism, quite relieved that he didn't have to hitch a ride.

Here's hoping that Steely's a less reckless driver than you are. The psychic remarked grimly. I'm glad I don't have to be outside to see for myself. His brain picked up on Hurc's worried thoughts, and his moustache quirked with interest. Withheld juicy gossip, eh? Sounded riveting, but since Zelda was so adamant about keeping it hidden, he decided not to pry. Even he knew better than to snoop around in the mind of his trainer's girlfriend.

So Alex recalled Guru as well, and turned his attention to Steely and Raikou. Oh hey, a Crobat. He hadn't brought Tox for this stage of the search, but once they got into the open, Ravage could easily search from the air. Speaking of which...

"I should have Yin out here, give us an extra pair of eyes." Cue the flashy appearance of a member of the fastest pokémon species in existence. The Ninjask blinked over to Raikou's front and hovered in front of the beast, head tilted in fascination. Yin waggled a friendly pincer at him, before speeding off back to his trainer.

Last question: how to mount Raikou? Alex supposed it was like getting aboard Anarch, only smaller. When Raikou leaned down, he grabbed Steely's hand, and jumped up, swinging his leg round and over the back of the beast. Once he was on board, it was a simple matter of readjusting himself so that he was properly balanced. With a lack of any obvious holds, Alex wrapped his arms around Steely's waist, clasping his hands together where she could see them.

"Okay," he said at length. "I think I'm ready."

So off they went, following the carefully-planned route that definitely hadn't been hastily scribbled on the first available map. Honest.

~~~~~
See Steely's post for route.
Not used to seeing something move so fast, Raider jerked his head back at Yin, but wiggled his ears in greeting once he got over his surprise. He was almost envious; the bug was pretty damn fast. Maybe if he had wings, he'd be faster...
Zelda chuckled privately to herself, and even Hurricane managed a grin through his worry as Alex hauled himself up onto the beast with Steely's help and got adjusted. The pair of Pokemon knew what was coming next, but Steely sure didn't. She froze, one hand clenching into a fist that crackled, till she realized what he was doing. It didn't make her relax, though. She took a breath and puffed it out, frowning when one of her ribs twinged.
"Just... don't squeeze too hard... my ribs are still kind of weird from this one here attacking me," she looked down at the back of Raijin's head, and he pursed his lips and made a face at the two.
I said I was sorry,
Steely rolled her eyes at him, and adjusted to get comfortable... which wasn't working out. She'd just need time to get used to it, she supposed. She reached back and rubbed the back of her neck, deciding to just deal with it.
"Right, so, here we go. Back in the ball, Zelda,"
What.
"You know you're not fast enough to keep up with us. Hurricane, Ravage and Yin are, and they're going to help us look. I'll let you back out when we get to the next town," and before she could argue, Steely withdrew the cat and put her ball back on her belt. Hurricane visibly deflated and sighed, left to his own devices now. Time to go, Steely supposed. She leaned forward a little bit, patting Raikou on the neck, "Gently."
She heard the big cat snort, and felt his muscles tense up in such a way that she was sure that he was going to ignore him. She managed a sigh before Raider took off like a rocket along the shore, heading south to the next big band of trees. Hurricane chuckled and darted after, and Ravage was already fluttering to keep up with the big cat.
OK NOW WE'RE GOING :D
Aaaaaaand they're off!
*ZOOM* Yeah. Not much is very interested around here in trying to race the legend, and most of the critters that might be a problem hardly even notice people before they're gone.
Mainly because I don't know what to throw at people other than an Angry Bear or something. And Angry Bears are overdone.
And so on they go. Forward.
And then there's a duck. In their way. With a leek. Suddenly.
Damn ninjas.
"Sorry Steely. Are you okay?" Injured ribs were never good. Maybe he could readjust his grip further up, away from the ribs... no wait, up wouldn't work at all. Instead, he tried to ease the pressure on her sides as much as he could without compromising his balance.
Suddenly, a duck!
Holy cheese!
A Farfetch'd, if Alex recalled correctly. They were interesting birds, but not generally considered too powerful. It would be easiest to 'remove the obstacle' and carry on through the forest, so he planned to do just that.
"Yin and Ravage should be able to deal with it, right?" As if on cue, the Ninjask shot up next to Alex and hummed in anticipation. Ninja Farfetch'd, prepare to be out-ninja'd.
"Screech and Aerial Ace. Use your speed."
Easily done. Yin let out a horrible war cry of sonic energy aimed straight at the leek bearer, then charged forth with his customary ninja speed. Coupled with the efforts of whatever Steely sent out, Alex reasoned that that would be enough.
Just then, he realised that Raikou could probably flash-fry the bird without breaking stride. But where was the fun in that?
"Eh, I'll live at any rate. Not like I haven't been through worse," she rolled her eyes, holding onto Raider for dear life as the beast easily loped over the ground, not even trying.
The cat bared his fangs in a growl at the duck suddenly appearing in their path, crackling faintly as he prepared to deal with this thing in their way. Steely tugged on his fur, though, "Hold on a second, let the others handle it," she looked to Ravage, who had heard what Alex had said, and swooped after Yin. He stayed behind the bug, letting it do its screechy thing before he swooped down, mouth gaping open to chomp down on the thing and get it the heck out of their way so they could move in. He chomped down with poison and jaw power, then let the bird go and zip back up into the air.
I could have done that a lot faster, Raider pointed out, flicking an ear as he continued running. If he came upon the battle, he would do the simple thing and just... jump over the bird. If it wanted to attack him, then... well. It'd be fried and they'd be done with that.
"Heh, yeah, but that's no fun," she patted the cat on his neck, and he rolled his eyes.
One poisoned fang was all that it took to fell the duck, after the horrible screeching caused him to reel back, providing a perfect opening for the swift bat to dive in and bury those fangs into his chest. It didn't even have a chance to squawk before it collapsed onto the shoreline, unconscious, and the two pokemon were thus free to catch up with Raikou, and continue their survey of the area.
Unbeknownst to all, once they were well out of sight of the duck and the shore, that angry bear I mentioned earlier happened along, and found himself a nice duck dinner, and was a lot less angry as a result.
Reached Thick Forest 5.
The trees, turnks so thick that it would generally take three or more people to span their trunks were, unexpectedly, in relative disarray, many of them uprooted and tossed across their path like discarded jack straws. Perhaps some sort of tornado had passed through recently, who knew.
All that was certain was that it was going to make forward progress rather difficult, considering the tangled mess of still green-covered branches and thick trunks, some of them stacked atop each other, not yet aware of their inevitable, eventual demise due to being uprooted.
Hurdling them might seem the obvious solution until one considered that they were scattered every which way and some of them were stacked higher than even the heads of the two humans sitting atop the legendary beast.
No mean feat, when one of these humans was Alex, that.
But...well. This did present a rather interesting tangle, and not just amongst the trees.
Obstacle! Tornado wreckage of fallen trees!
Edit: Yeah. .5 :exp to Yin and Ravage. I knew I was forgetting something. >.>;;;
Ravage swooped through the trees to catch up with the running beast once they'd taken care of the duck in their way. Steely ducked down a little bit as the trees started to get thicker, but noticed the bits of branches and shards of wood on the ground, and frowned slightly. She leaned forward to get Raider's attention.
"Hey bud, slow down a little bit,"
Not a good idea, he huffed, eyes pointed ahead. Steely looked up, and saw the great fallen trees, laying ruined around the area. Raider didn't seem like he wanted to slow down, either, eyeing the logs like some great challenge he was just going to run right over.
"Ravage, go see if you can spot a path for us, will ya?" she called up quickly to the bat, who nodded and zipped ahead, keeping to the air and looking around.
Hurricane took the initiative and zipped ahead, becoming a blur as he attempted to scale the logs and reach the top, taking a quick look around for a path, and taking whatever he found. over the logs, under the logs, jumping over short enough ones... they had to get through here one way or another.
Hold on, the cat growled, pinning his ears back and getting his claws ready. The big feline launched himself at the stack of logs, digging his claws in to get his feet up and spring off again. If he couldn't jump it in one bound, then he'd just climb his way over it.
...hopefully without losing his passengers. Though Steely realized what he was doing and literally clung to the creature for dear life. Either she could be uneasy by being so close to another human being, or she could fall and possibly break her neck.
...yeah, hold on tight, Alex.
Ravage is flying ahead to see if he can spot the path of least resistance through the wreckage. Hurricane is doing the same, but from the ground.
Raider is trying to bound up the first logpile that gets in his way and follow the other two the rest of the way.
Yin paused for just long enough to emit a triumphant victory cry, then darted back up to the main group. The Ninjask was pleasantly surprised at Ravage's battling - the strength was obvious, surpassing his own comfortably, but the bat was no slacker when it came to bursts of speed, either. For the first few seconds of the fight, Ravage even had the reflex jump on him. Only for the first few seconds, mind. Given enough time, Yin could outspeed anything.
Raikou was going too fast for Alex to pick out any minute details in the forest, but he noticed the tree density increasing, and the logs that scattered the path ahead. Now, had this been his jeep, he would have hit the brakes, thought up a plan of attack, then either made heavy use of the low-range gearbox or given it up as a bad job and climb on foot. Problem was, he wasn't driving. And, the horrible realisation dawned on him, neither was Steely.
Maybe this was what Guru felt like.
At Raikou's warning, Alex used his freakishly long arms to his advantage, reaching past Steely to grip at the thunder beast's mane as securely as he could. Of course, this meant that the two of them would be pressed very closely together, but now really wasn't the best time to debate the psychological necessity for personal space. Not when the sentient transport was flooring it and there were no seatbelts.
Yin sped ahead with Ravage and Hurricane, working with them to plot the least deadly route through the mess of logs. Scouting was what the bug did best.
Hurricane skittered up and over the nearest monstrous pile of lumber, outdistancing the legend, being unencumbered and equipped with Extremespeed.
The great beast gathered himself, two passengers clinging for dear life. It was clear that while they were the ones with the game plan and destination...they were totally not in control of HOW they were getting from point A to point B while atop the legend of thunder.
But hey. What can you do, eh?
Muscles bunched under them, as Alex squished Steely, latching onto the thick fur with a deathgrip. Raikou leapt, and landed with a lurch atop one of the logs.
Which proceeded to lurch and the whole mess collapse under his weight.
Raider snarled and launched himself again, before he found his balance completely. It was either that or get squashed under the rapidly collapsing pile of trees. Deathgrips proved to be the saving grace for the trainers, though not for the cat's pelt.
The trainers found themselves on the ground a bit away from the still collapsing pile, with handfuls of yellow or black fur clenched in their fists, as Raikou landed a bit away, irritably. They weren't supposed to collapse under him. After all, Hurricane had made it fine.
But Hurricane wasn't a 350 pound beast. Who had two riders to boot. Good travel tip over dangerous, potentially collapsible terrain.
On the plus side, by the time the trainers managed to find their scattered wits and the like, Hurricane, Ravage and Yin returned, having found a safe path that, while circuitous, wouldn't require hurdling any more log piles.
Which might be nice, since they aren't all that steady to support some five- to six-hundred-odd pounds of weight landing on them, considering the last one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Deathgrips pulled out some hair from Raider, but saved people from becoming pancakes in the collapsing logpile.

.3 :gexp for making me chuckle

Steely kept her face pressed into the big cat's yellow and black striped fur and listened to her heart thump around in her ears, even after he stopped and tried to crane his neck around to see the damage to his coat. Once she was sure that the world wasn't ending, she slowly pulled her head up to look around, suddenly becoming aware of her surroundings. Particularly where she was squished.

So she promptly squeaked and practically launched herself off of raikou and away from Alex, still clutching the handfulls of fur even as she reeled and nearly fell backwards. Without his master keeping him in check, so to speak, the beast started to rumble and spark like a thunderstorm, a clear sign that his remaining passenger should vacate as quickly as possible if he wanted to stay alive.

"So how does walking sound? Sounds like a good idea, we should do that, don't you think?" she said quickly, and then abruptly realized she had two handfulls of hair, and where they had come from. "Oh, Raider! I'm sorry, are you alright?" she tossed the hair into the air and raced over to him, patting his mane where there were patches of hair missing, and red skin beneath, which Steely rubbed at with a frown. I'll live, he grumbled, shaking and letting more hair fall from his coat.

Hurricane came back at about that point, and laid his ears back as he watched, looking sideways at Alex to see what was going through his head.

We, um, found a path through this part of the forest, Hurricane piped up meekly while the flying Pokemon hovered around above. Raider looked at him from where he was glaring at the dismantled pile of logs, as did Steely, peering over raikou's neck. "Great! Show us?"

Ravage reacted before the conflicted looking Hurricane could, zipping a bit ahead to wait for them to follow. The trainer whispered for the Legend to run as he liked, and followed after Ravage, trying to calm her breathing and heart beat. Her lucario looked from her, to Alex, mouth hanging open as if he wanted to say something. The irate face of the pink cat appeared in the back of his mind, and his steel jaws clicked shut.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear, he whined, walking after them and pulling his ears in anxiety. Talk about a rock and a hard place.

While Steely had done arguably the sensible thing and not look at anything during the crashing, Alex's insatiable desire to know what was happening at all times meant that his eyes were fixed open to take in all the horror. Not that he saw much more than a series of blurs - actually, that was probably for the best.

When the motion stopped and his vision returned, Alex registered that Steely was bolting away from him. For a brief moment, he was somewhat confused - the danger was over, surely? Why was she running? Maybe she'd freaked out over the whole close contact thing? Yes that must have been it. He was about to haul himself up and apologise when he heard the angry static discharge.

Wait a minute. He looked at his hands, realising that he was holding clumps of Raikou's fur. He looked at Raikou himself, and how close the two of them were, and how annoyed and imminent rampagey the beast was. Suddenly Steely's plan of getting out of the blast radius appeared to be a very sensible one. So coolly, calmly, Alex rolled away, picked himself up, and casually ran away as quickly as he could, leaving Steely to placate Raikou while he watched from a safe distance.

"...Walking. Sounds good. The exercise'll be good for me. Yes, that's my reason for continuing on foot, and I'm sticking to it." He glanced at the beast, and flashed him an apologetic smile for the whole fur thing.

Now that they were walking, Alex let Guru outside again, for additional protection and all that. The psychic quirked an eyebrow once he'd looked around and seen that they were clearly still in the forest.

So what happened to travelling by Raikou? Guru asked innocently. Alex simply shot him a look that explained everything.

Well, now you know how I feel when you're driving that jeep of yours. The psychic looked over towards where Steely was. You might want to talk to her.

"I was about to." Alex agreed. Once the group had set off again, he matched stride with Steely as they navigated the log piles.

"Sorry about squishing you. Are you okay?" There was audible concern in his voice when he asked. He wanted to put a reassuring arm around her, but didn't know whether or not she'd freak out again. Best to wait for now.

Guru stayed out of the way, silently observing the drama. If only he knew what Hurricane was hiding from Alex. Damned morals.

The log piles weren't so devastating complicated especially if you were fit enough to climb over them when it was required. They were strown about in a rather annoying pattern, but nothing impossible. Or so the Hound of Thunder found it; he had raced far ahead of the party through effortless jumps and sprints. You'd think he saw this obstacle as more of a race than anything. It wasn't pretty to look at either. Just arbitrary piles of logs. When you'd get to the next landmark you had no idea!

But it was sooner than later. Once you crossed into trees that weren't on the ground and cut accordingly, you entered another opening where it seemed like a great battle had once occured. Chucks of land were severed and at different angles and elevations. The portion you were on extended to a stream that ran against a risen piece of land. Strips of wood laid nearby as if a bridge was once there to allow passengers to cross. It was hard to find a clearcut path as the dusty road you once followed seemed to branch off in multiple directions. Had the Earth moved so much to force these tectonic plates out of order? Maybe the gods themselves once battled here centuries ago. Life remained and flourished in this area despite its appearance. This entire clearing which seemed to extend out of peaceful woods and towards further lands seemed to be a puzzle in itself.

There's no direct path to where you were headed. The bridge that once stood was severed in half with portions twenty feet above you to the next plateau and in piles beneath you. Lower slabs of land could be found to the west but who knows if they lead to a forgable path. These were the Disfigured Woods, after all.

Raider bounded ahead of them, but didn't get beyond Steely's range of sight. She wasn't worried about him, and let the feline do as he wished. It was easy to tell that he was a lot happier running around without all that extra weight.

Hurricane came up next to her just a second or two before Alex came up on her other side. The blue and black fighting type effortlessly hopped over logs and padded along, almost like he was trying to distract himself.

"I'm alright," she said, though she could still faintly hear her heart thumping, "That log pile collapsing just startled me, I think," she continued, looking around for any sign of the two legendaries they were searching for. She looked over her shoulder and saw Guru, "You know, that's not a bad idea,"

Steely let out her own psychic, and didn't notice Hurricane suddenly trip and faceplant into a fallen tree.

Oh good, you came to your senses, Zelda sniffed, looking around as she fell into step with Steely on her unoccupied side. She shot a look back to Hurricane, who promptly raced ahead after Raikou. Steely frowned at her two Pokemon, but didn't ask.

Looking ahead, she saw that the two were stopped, and when she got there, she realized why. The path was split and towered ahead of them where a bridge had once been. How strange! But they had to get to the other side, so...

"Well..." she looked around, trying to think of a way to continue. Zelda rolled her eyes and hit the releases for Hurricane and Raider's Pokeballs, withdrawing them. Ravage was already fluttering up near the top, so all she did was put her paw on Steely's leg and suddenly teleport them to the top of the ridge.

"That... that works too," Steely shook her head and looked around, waiting for Alex and letting Raider and Hurricane out again, before they continued.

Teleport cooldown - 1.4/2.0

~~~~~
Once they were out of the log maze and into a new clearing, Alex stopped to take in all the crazy geometry and the warped landscape.
Oh my, Guru remarked. We've just walked into an Escher painting. Alex nodded, and tilted his head to try and make sense of exactly what was sticking out where. Okay, there was a broken bridge, and a ledge above them that they probably needed to get to. Start there, then.
Yin had no problems getting up to the ridge, the Ninjask simply buzzing over to the far side to join Ravage. Unfortunately, Alex didn't have wings, so his own method of ascending to the ridge would require some thought.
"Hmm... I guess we could get Anarch to give us a lift to the ridge, or at least most of the way - he's probably large enough."
*poit*
"Or, teleportation. That could work."
Gotta love Occam's Razor. Alex laid a hand on Guru's shoulder, and with another *poit*, joined Steely and Zelda at the top. Once there, it was back to working on the easiest route through the non-Euclidean treespace and into the swamplands up ahead.
~~~~~

Also line of sight teleporting, whee.

Teleporting greatly simplified the puzzle put before you, or at least that portion. Both of the trainers and their respective companions were teleported next to the second half of the bridge. This was the perfect vantage point to see the entire scape of the Disfigured Woods. One would assume a massive earthquake tore the Earth apart and created this odd formation of life, foilage, and land. Streams that once ran flat on the terrain now dipped over smoothed plateaus into waterfalls. Some trees even sprouted from the solid sides of the land slabs and grew either to the ground below or crooked. Truly an oddity in the natural world.

It seemed to continue on for quite a long way, but you could see where the trees grew thicker and what appeared to be a vanishing point of the path. That desired exit to the swamp was straight ahead.

Raikou found this terrain to be great for jumping and running. A perfect place to stretch such a mighty beast's legs. You wouldn't have to worry about him going too far, however. He knew you'd be cross if he fled too far ahead even if it was only to display his blinding speed.

The sun was beginning to set in the west. It gave the dismantled grove an orange glow and it looked positively beautiful. It even helped guide you on what remained of the dirt path although it wasn't entirely needed. A few jumps here and there would get you there with a small amount of effort. Some land formations were higher than others which did get you lost a few times, but nothing that made your journey amazingly difficult.

One striking aspect of this grove was a single massive tree that was placed in the center of it all. It was settled on the one piece of flat, untouched land and appeared to be as healthy as it was large. This was one of the tallest trees the two of you had probably ever seen. Yellow and red leaves trickled to the ground from its hefty branches. Its roots seemed to connect to just about everything near it.

If you decided to pass by this tree as you walked, both of you thought you heard something. Laughter? Who was laughing? Not Alex, and certainly not Steely. Was it one of your companions? Couldn't be, there was nothing funny happening. Maybe it was Raikou?

.... Nah, probably not.

The laughing voice sounded quite happy. But... where did it come from? Would you investigate or continue onward? The path was clear, but voices without bodies were sometimes worth looking in to, right?

Decisions, decisions.

Steely wobbled back and fourth a few times, looking down over the edge until Guru teleported Alex up with the rest of them. Yup, path of least resistance was the way to go. Luckily they had two supergenius Pokemon with them to remind them of the easy way.

Raider loped ahead as they continued walking, taking in the sights around them, even if it didn't look that nice. Steely had her hands in the pockets of her coat, watching him as he ambled around and sniffed at the gnarled looking trees. The silence was almost kind of painful, and she thought as they walked. One thing she realized was that she really didn't know Alex that well. She realized abruptly that he had been the leader of the Rangers all that time ago, but not much else. Hm.

"Hey, uh, Alex," she started, but stopped at the laughter as they passed the tree.

The disembodied laughter sent a chill down the girl's spine, and she snapped her head around to see who was laughing. Upon realizing that it wasn't any of them, it only put her more on edge. "Ok, getting the hell out of dodge now, please," she skittered away from the tree, as if afraid it was the source of the voice. Steely didn't need any more voices in her head, really.

Hurricane whined slightly, ears slicked back. Zelda, big surprise, continued after Steely as if nothing was strange at all, flicking her tail at Hurricane as he slowed. He reached up and pulled his ears down, grumbling to himself.

Steely didn't seem to notice, and after a bit of mental prodding that she wasn't aware of, she remembered where she had been in her train of thought. "So, um. You started from Hillmoss like everyone else, right? I don't think I ever saw you... but I haven't lived in Hillmoss forever myself," she reached up and scratched her head through her hat, having to adjust it when she was done. Zelda, still keeping to her side, chuckled and shook her head, but didn't say anything.

Teleport cooldown - 1.6/2.0

~~~~~
Teleportation was certainly a useful tool to possess. Almost too useful, really - it was like cheating the landscape out of its traversing challenge. Of course, Alex didn't really have any ethical concerns about making his journeying less strenuous. He'd faced Displacer and won, as had Steely. They had every right to give natural obstacles the finger when the situation called for it.
The walk through the Disfigured Woods was peaceful, and Alex enjoyed the amicable silence. The only sounds for miles around were the gentle breeze through the trees, the rustling made by the footfalls of the group, Yin's buzzing as the insect zipped around with Raikou, and the disembodied laughter coming from that giant tree they were passing.
Wait a minute, that last one didn't sound right.
Alex looked puzzled, and turned to stare at the tree, giving it a cursory once-over as if the source of the laughter would reveal itself to him if he concentrated hard enough. Damned mysterious laughter - if he had been alone, he would be well into a formal investigation right about now. It didn't matter if the source was potentially deadly, as long as he knew what it was.
I don't think Steely quite shares your enthusiasm. Guru chimed in.
Hm? Alex turned away from the tree, seeing Steely give it a wide berth and saying words to the same effect. Fair enough, his curiosity would just have to go unsatisfied this time.
Keep an eye out for trouble, Guru? The psychic simply nodded, and delegated the task of laughter triangulation to a subconscious area of his mind.
So they walked some more, and Steely struck up some conversation. Hillmoss?
"Um, I'm not from Hillmoss. I'm not an Opaddekan native." He paused in thought before continuing. "I mentioned it in passing a few months back. Mustn't have gone into detail about it. Huh." Alex had to remind himself that not everyone remembered the most trivial snippets of conversation from months back, like he could. Time for a story, then.
"Do you remember that episode a couple years' back, with Celebi and all the people from Legacy getting transported here?" It was all over the news channels and papers, so she probably did. "I'm one of those Legacy people. One minute I'm in a snowdrift on my bike, the next I'm in the grasslands just outside Hillmoss. Maybe that's why I never freak out about anything - after an apocalypse-fuelled dimension hop, everything else just seems... normal, you know?"
Don't look at me, I grew up near Escennia.
"Yeah, I was still a pretty new trainer when it happened. I only had Sifter, Dynamo and a couple of others you haven't met at the time." Speaking of which, the Manectric would welcome a run-out with the main party. Alex hadn't really travelled extensively with the pooch for some time now. He made a mental note of the roster change for when they next reached a town.
"Come to think of it, my family live in Hillmoss now. We keep in touch, but with all the travelling and adventures and near-death experiences, I haven't visited them in ages."
Maybe one day he'd bring her along to meet them. Might be slightly easier on her neck, too, as long as his sister hadn't gone back to wearing heels again.
"Anyway. That's the abridged version of how I got here. I guess the full story would have to wait for another time."
They walked a bit farther, then Alex spoke again.
"What's Hillmoss like? I've never been there long enough to see the sights." Maybe it was like the Hikari Town he knew from his childhood, and that was why Celebi had transported him there. It made sense.
For whatever reason (mainly fear, you pair of wimps) the voice and its whereabout were ignored for the time being. Whether it was a friend or a foe will remain unanswered. Perhaps there was treasure at the end of the unexplored road. Maybe danger or valuables, or perhaps just an experience your characters would have enjoyed or pushed them to their very limitations as trainers, human beings, and Alex and Steely's friendship. It could have been the most cataclysmic, amazing, astonishing, and incredible adventure one has ever seen or heard of.
But no, its cool you guys avoided it. Time is of the essence, yeah.
Once again, Raikou ran ahead. To show dominance one might guess. Alpha males tend to do that. So you would just follow behind like a loyal trainer and traverse the dismantled land until you reached the edge of the woods and wilderness to tackle an entirely different animal. Your journey had just begun.
What a rotten smell. Yes, swamps had that stereotype of being shallow, muddy areas that contained little good other than fungi used for medicinal purposes. But what a rancid odor that filled both of your nostrils. It was all you could do to keep from losing your lunch. The air seemed to have gotten thicker as well. Not much light was shed on this swamp due to the heavy amount of trees.
Though, who'd ever seen trees with green bark and brown leaves? Wasn't it the other way around?
It should have been. But something ages ago had polluted these trees and stunted growth. There were numerous ones and each smelled as bad as the next. Limbs literally rotted to the core and fell into the dark mire you were now wading through. Might want to roll up your pant legs, chaps, as this is going to be a long ride. Though it wouldn't be paranoid to watch your feet closely.
Who the hell knows what lurks down in these waters.
Not to mention the path you followed was no longer visible. The swamp's edge seemed to merge seamlessly into the forest. If you were going to navigate it properly, you'd need alternative methods.
