Cute and Fluffy Evil Overlord

Word Count: 2376 Summary: Ben gets Bob Ross from Steely. He gets the idea, after noting his painting skills, to market it, since he can't properly appreciate the art (being blind and all), so it'll go to people who can fully appreciate it. And it'll make money, too. And let Bob do what he loves. Rewards wanted: 1) A portable 'job,' delineated as follows: While in a town, Ben can set up a shop of sorts (must make an IC post in the town doing so), where Bob Ross paints thirty minute paintings for an audience, or portraits upon request. All completed paintings are also for sale. As per normal with a stationary job, he can travel the nearby landscape some, but must stay near the town. After setting this up, he gains 400 Zenni a week (negotiable, but I would like a set amount if possible) while he remains stationary in the city. 2) Some happiness for Bob Ross. "So, I heard that you wanted a Smeargle! Well, hey, I happened to know of one that could use a nice trainer. I know you'll like him. His name is Bob Ross. I'm sure you guys'll get along great! -Steely" Ben frowned down at the poketech as the message finished. What in...he pressed a few buttons, getting it to replay. He cocked his head to one side. Admittedly, he had been looking to get a smeargle sometime. He liked dogs, what could he say? And it had been pointed out at some point that a smeargle was a beagle of sorts. Just one with a serious art fetich. But he had hardly expected Steely to just up and send him one. For nothing. But then...he had given her Lloyd, oh a year or so ago now? So he supposed it was fair. Still...it seemed kinda out of the blue to him. But, after a moment, he shook his head. Why dwell on the matter so much? As he had recalled, he had once given Steely an egg, right? Friends did stuff like that from time to time. He dug out a bit of fudge that he'd been saving, figuring he'd pick up more later, and headed out to the PC, leaving Faith to watch the plant, as she usually did. She had discovered she liked gardening and it generally kept her out of trouble, so he had no complaints. A few minutes later, and he was seated at the center's PC, working his way carefully through the options. He paused a moment as the list of pokemon he had in his PC was recited. He still had yet to introduce himself to that Gallade he had gotten from that Eisen person. Perhaps he should meet them both... He shook his head after a moment, depositing Fate into the PC and pulling the smeargle out. For some reason, he felt a little uneasy about meeting the Gallade. It might have to do with the fact that it was more powerful than any single member of his team. He wasn't sure. It was probably silly, really. He picked up the pokeball, holding it a few moments as he gathered his thoughts, then moved outside. Smeargles were painters, after all, and he doubted the nurse would appreciate it if it doodled all over her reception area, or one of the rooms. A few minutes later, he pressed the release catch. “Hi, I...gah!” Even before he could get anything else, the blind trainer staggered back under the impact of a smallish body upon his torso, where it proceeded to cling. “Smeargle!!!” Ben patted the head of the creature a bit awkwardly, awash in the pathetically excited, and hopeful emotions projected by the pokemon. “Smeargle smeargle smear...” He had no idea what Steely had told this pokemon, or what exactly to do at this point. He felt horribly guilty at the idea of depositing him again any time soon. And besides. He dug into his pocket for the bit of fudge, feeling a little silly, and the little critter took it, somehow without letting go of the deathgrip about his waist. “Ah...good to meet you too, Bob Ross. Well...do you mind if I call you Ross?” He really didn't much care for the name Bob, personally, but he wasn't about to try and change his name at this point. However the eager agreement to just about anything he said made him wonder what all this fellow had been through. “Er, right. Well, Ross, I promise that I'll not give you away or anything. I like dogs, really.” He continued to pat the creature a bit awkwardly for a little bit. “Uh...could you maybe...let go? I won't disappear, I promise.” Almost reluctantly, the little pokemon dropped back to the ground, one paw-hand clinging tightly to a pant leg. Well, it was sort of an improvement. Ben sighed and scooped the pokemon up after a moment. “How about we go do a little shopping?” Some ten minutes later, he and the beagle were back in the pokemon center, and Ben was setting up a small easel with a canvas while Ross bounced around him, eagerly. Anubis sat nearby, watching this with interest. “What are you up to now?” the lucario asked after a moment. “He's a painter. I'm sure it's been ages since he's really been allowed to do so, from all appearances.” The excitement and happiness radiating from the pokemon was almost like a radiator to the two of them and their Aura sense. “All right, Mister Ross. Have at it, if you want to.” The painterly pokemon barked happily at the canvas a moment, staring at it, then set to work, grabbing hold of his tail. He set to work, chirping away to himself as he did so. Ben settled back, meditating, focusing on the auras in the room, practicing sensing the nuances of it. It wasn't like he could watch the painting take shape, after all, and it would likely be hours before the little fellow was done. "Say now! That's not too shabby there..." He blinked, shaking out of the fog of meditation at the nurse's exclamation. "What now? Who..?" Ben cocked his head in bemusement, checking his watch. How long had he been sitting there, then? His confusion increased as the device indicated it had only been about half an hour since he'd left Ross to his painting. "Just look at what your smeargle has...oh, right. You can't. I..." the nurse trailed off in confusion, and he carefully quashed the vague surge of irritation at her actions. People were people after all...and at least she hadn't apologized this time, or at least had caught herself. Ben felt his lucario come up to peer over his shoulder. "Hm. He's not bad. He did a good job on the counter. The amount of detail on that computer is quite impressive really. And the nurse isn't done too badly either." Not for the first time was Ben glad that the Lucario didn't generally broadcast his comments to everyone. As a matter of fact, the only time he had was when with Steely. "He painted, well...the reception area, and me behind the counter." Ben stretched slightly, and nodded, deciding against pressing for any details. Her embarrassment over her slip earlier and trying to describe a portrait without sounding conceited or the like was more than enough for him. "You can have it if you want." "What? Really? I couldn't..." He waved a hand, cutting her off. "What would I do with it? I can't even see it, after all. I'd rather it be where it was appreciated, and I'm pretty sure that Mister Ross here would feel the same, no?" "Smeargle!" The painter offered a sunny smile, picking up one of the other blank canvases cheerfully. Ben could sense the small pokemon's approval of his generosity. "But..." "Go on. Please?" He sensed her continued hesitation. "Consider it a donation to the center, if you have to. I'd just like it to be appreciated." There was another moment of hesitation, then the Nurse sighed. "All right, if you insist...but it really doesn't seem fair to take it without paying some sort of fee...I'll hang it on the wall once the paint dries." Ben listened to her go, mulling that over, as the smeargle sat down with another of the few blank canvases he'd bought for the fellow. The canvas and easel and so forth weren't cheap, and he'd been worried he might not be able to afford to let the fellow indulge his talents too often. He dove back into his poketech as Bob Ross set to painting another picture, chattering along with his painting cheerfully. Edited by DarthEevee, Feb 13 2010, 12:24 PM.

"Thirty minutes again. I don't know...it's almost uncanny, Mister Ross..." Ben leaned back as the smeargle hopped into his lap, after the blind trainer had checked his watch after having the painter finish a picture on the last of the canvases he'd picked up. Over the last few days, he'd done some number crunching, and research, as well as picking up a few more canvases for the smeargle to paint on. And each time he'd painted, he'd completed whatever it was in thirty minutes. That would be a potentially useful selling point. 'Thirty Minute Portraits' had a nice sound to it. People didn't like sitting around for hours on end for such things, so it really would be a handy trick. The nurse had expressed her approval of all the pictures the pokemon had done so far, noting that aside from the one she had since hung on the wall of the waiting room, they all were landscapes of one sort or another. Well done landscapes, but he wondered. "So, Ross...what you you think of opening up a business for your pictures? Paint portraits and landscapes and so forth for people to enjoy. I'm not sure how I can really afford to keep you supplied with painting supplies otherwise." He reached out to give the smeargle a scratch behind one floppy ear. "I could probably even make something extra out of it, too, all things considered." "Smeargle!" The pokemon simply gave his leg a hug, paintbrush tail wagging, and he sighed softly, giving it another scratch behind the ears. He could never tell whether it just approved of the fact that he was actually letting him out to paint and see the world, or of what he was saying. "Both, actually." Ben jumped slightly as Anubis padded over, near-silently, speaking up abruptly. "How do you DO that?" he asked the lucario, managing not to snap the question out. He could sense Auras as well, but the warrior had an uncanny way of figuring out thoughts and the like that he had never figured out. It occurred to him that the question could be taken several ways, but he need not have worried. Anubis understood. "Instinct, really. It's...part of being a lucario, I think. Sorry." The lucario shrugged, a bit helplessly. "But really, he likes the idea, and he likes you, and being able to paint." "Right...thanks." He stifled a sigh, continuing to scratch behind Ross' ears. This would take a bit of setup, but it would probably be worth it in the end, it seemed. If nothing else, it would let the little fellow do what he loved to do so much. The nurse had been letting him leave a few of the paintings set on easels or leaned against the wall out in the lobby, and had commented once or twice that several people had admired them. Really, the main issue was setting a price up. Factor in the cost of paint, canvas, and so forth, see how much that came out to, and then go from there, that was easy enough. He wasn't exactly certain on what was reasonable markup for a painting, however. Still, there were ways to find out, and he sat down with his poketech, searching for information as Faith engaged Ross in a game of tag, now that there wasn't anything for him to paint on. ~~~~~~~~~~ A Couple Days Later ~~~~~~~~~~ "Look out there..." Ben ducked at the warning, stifling a curse as one of the falling poles clipped his shoulder, struggling free of the tangled mess once more. "It's really starting to look like a tent now." "You could help out you know." Ben rubbed at his shoulder irritably. "I am helping." "...." Ben turned back to the tangled pile of poles and rope, resolutely ignoring the lucario at this point, as Jax quietly padded over to loom over the steel warrior. Anubis sighed, pretending to not notice the fire hound for several long moments, before hopping to his feet and heading over, pulling a pole out of the mess and shoving it into their trainer's hands. "Hold this. Like so." He directed Ben into holding it upright as he pawed through the remaining pile. Within minutes, now that someone who could actually see inanimate objects and the instructions (even if he couldn't read them, it at least had pictures), the tent was up and he shoved the last of the pegs holding the canvas down into the dirt. One advantage to being a steel/fighting type was a lot of strength and hardiness, that was for sure. "Thanks, Anubis." The lucario huffed and slunk off, out of sight of the white arcanine that had been watching the whole process. After doing his research, he'd set out to buy a few more things, including this pavilion tent, and set Bob Ross to making up a rather neat sign to hang by the entrance. He had some thoughts of seeing about setting up some of the pictures for online sales, but for the moment, this was a test run of a physical sort of thing. All he could do was wait and see how it came out. Ross followed him into the tent as he headed in with another armful of supplies, looking curious. "Smeargle?" Ben smiled, giving him an absent pat as he started to set the easels up. "Yep, this is for you, Mister Ross." The trainer left the painter pokemon inside, heading back out and returning with an armful of canvases and setting the landscapes up on the easels, heading out again to return with a few chairs and a number of blank canvases this time, setting them up and smiling to the young pokemon. "Have at 'em if you want," he added, waving to the now set up, temptingly blank spaces. He'd hung some fliers about town after getting them printed, leaving others at places such as the pokemart and pokecenter. He could only hope that it garnered interest. Bob Ross chirped happily, and he headed back out, setting up one final bit, a pretty sign, outside the entrance to the tent, and going to take a seat beside Jax. "Well, now we see if this is a good idea or not, right?" Otherwise, there wasn't much chance he'd be able to keep providing the painter with his supplies, in the end... 'Watch Bob Ross paint! Pokemon, people or landscapes, done in thirty minutes! Portraits upon request!' Edited by DarthEevee, Apr 7 2010, 09:51 AM.

Woo! Danke or the grade. And yeah. Ouch on the nitpicks. *coughs* I usually work hard at killing redundancy phrases...unless it's for a reason. Can't believe I missed that. n.- Interestingly, though. Fetich and fetish are actually apparently BOTH correct spellings. For the same word, too. No wonder my spellchecker didn't pick it up. Learn something new every day (I always used to believe that fetish was an incorrect spelling, myself n.-). Edited by DarthEevee, Apr 14 2010, 07:34 PM.

Really. Interesting. Oh, and I accidentally hit the delete button on my above post. I assumed it would ask for confirmation if I actually wanted to delete it, but apparently not. Sigh. Here's the rewards, for future reference: (Sorry!) Approved job w/ 400 zenni per week. +4 Happiness for Smeargle 1.2 leftover.
