The red eyes within the black mask narrowed, dark paws raised slowly, cupping about air. There was a moment of silence, as the blue-furred warrior held that pose, ears slicked flat against his skull. Then something became visible between his paws, a faint glimmering at first, that grew rapidly into a glowing blueish sphere. It glowed with energy, reflecting oddly off the steel spike protruding from the beige-furred chest. The narrowed eyes fixed on his intended target, reading their presence, and their emotional state. Good. They were ready. Indeed, they had already raised their own hands, though they didn't move otherwise. Good enough. The lucario moved again, hurling the sphere in one practiced motion. As the sphere flew across the intervening space, its intended target gathered an identical one in his own hands, and flung it. He staggered back slightly as the two collided a couple feet in front of him, the concussive force of their mutual destruction that close throwing him off balance momentarily. He shook his head, not bothering to brush the brown hair back out of his gray eyes, straightening up. "Better?" he asked, turning to face the pokemon. "A bit anyhow, on the control. Still pretty slow for gathering it, though." The trainer snorted softly at that, moving a bit away. "Going to take a break?" "I think so for the moment..." Ben stretched carefully, glad to note that he didn't have much of a headache. This Aura business took a lot of getting used to. If he wasn't careful about it, particularly Aura Sphere, it could – and had – blown up in his face, so to speak. Thus the reason for practicing now. He wasn't particularly a fan of repeating his mistakes, and feedback overload was certainly not something he wanted to deal with again. Focus and tuning out distractions was important, yes, but it was practically impossible to be ready for absolutely everything, so it was inevitable that such would fail from time to time. Which meant that improving his control over the whole business was of utmost importance. Then, even if his focus was broken, he should hopefully be able to keep it from accidentally having another backlash ever again. While liberal use of aspirin and about a good twenty-four hour rest had set things right in the end, he really didn't want to repeat the experience. He'd been improving a fair bit. Lately, he'd been practicing his speed, how quickly he could gather and use the energy. It was one of the areas he seemed to be the worst at, any more. And yet, even as he improved his control over the Aura Sphere technique, he found his thoughts turning elsewhere. Aura gave one an exceptional sense of awareness, of exactly where everyone was. He was used to using his hearing and other senses to do similar, to make up for his lack of sight. What if one used all of this to predict an attack before it happened, avoiding it entirely? Anubis had been skeptical of the idea. He heard the shuffle of paws and the fading jingle of Anubis' bell as the lucario wandered off, and pulled his pokedex, flipping it open, once he figured the pokemon was out of earshot. He'd spent a fair amount of time searching with the little device. “Detect.” "Detect. A move of the fighting type. The user evades attack completely. It becomes less likely to succeed if used in succession." He smiled slightly. The only question was, how... Edited by DarthEevee, Feb 2 2010, 09:31 AM.

"You're sure about this?" Anubis' tone was doubtful, studying his trainer carefully, as if he'd grown a third head or something. "Yeah. What's the problem?" "Well..." Ben stifled a slight sigh. "You've been throwing Aura Spheres at me recently. Where's the difference?" "...." Ben had a point, admittedly. It wasn't like the young man didn't know what he was doing in a fight, enough to manage to get nothing more than a few broken bones when sparring with his own mother once, long ago... "Look, I trust you to hold back enough not to kill me...unless you haven't changed your mind about doing that eventually..." Ben cocked his head to the side, as the lucario shifted. "Well, are you saying you don't know your own strength, and how to measure it?" "No, but..." "But what?" Ben crossed his arms over his chest. "All I'm proposing here is a spar, not a flat out and out fight. That's all." He waited, and carefully didn't smile when the lucario sighed softly. "Well, if it's only a spar..." Anubis shifted a bit, dropping into stance after a moment, Ben following suit, the latter into a more defensive crouch than the former. They stood there a moment, facing each other across a couple feet, and then both sneezed rather abruptly, straightening up in confusion. "Gesundheit." "Gesundheit." They also spoke simultaneously, blinked, and then Ben chuckled. "Jinx." He shook his head. How odd was that, really? Both of them sneezing like that. Must have been someone was talking about them or whatever. Still, he wanted to test his ideas on this, and pondering a coincidence wasn't going to get anywhere. However reluctant Anubis was, there really wasn't anyone else he trusted to be able to hold back properly of his pokemon, aside from Maya, the Xatu, and she was a gentle soul. He couldn't ask her to attack him...it would upset her terribly. "Anyhow...shall we get started, then?" Ben fell back into the defensive crouch. "Just try to hit me. Not hard or anything, just touch me, you know?" He focused carefully on the lucario's aura as he did so, 'watching' it closely as Anubis shuffled. If he was right... "Yeah, I know..." Anubis fell back into his own stance, hesitating again for a few moments, uncertain as how to proceed. He didn't really want to hurt his trainer. But Ben had just said that all he had to do was touch him. That did make a big difference, didn't it? His ears slicked back, as his fur rose slightly, his own senses extending as his trainer's already had. Ben shifted slightly as the lucario tensed, paying careful attention to the aura, as well as the input from his other, more normal senses. He had a lot of practice in spars, gauging movement from the other person's footsteps, the shifting of clothing as they moved their arms or turned... Well, Anubis didn't have clothing, but he did have fur, after all, and a softly jingling bell about his neck. And there was the Aura reading...but he was still getting used to that. The lucario circled him, as he turned in place, keeping his attention on where the pokemon was, head tilted to the side, carefully. Anubis paused, his footsteps stopping a moment, before he lunged, and Ben hid a smile, comparing what the Aura sense was telling him to his own experience and other senses did, making mental notes. The lucario was going to come in from the left... He turned, and the footsteps stuttered a second. Oho, it was a feint, and Anubis intended to catch him off guard by slipping to the right at the last moment... "Hah!" Ben felt the light touch on his shoulder as he moved, still in the process of turning. He nodded to himself, to the lucario's obvious annoyance at his lack of reaction. "I touched you, didn't I? What was the point, anyhow?" Ben could sense the confidence bubbling under the surface of his companion's questions, and he cocked his head to the side, thinking a moment. "Orientation." He turned slightly to face the lucario, not elaborating. "Why don't you try it again?" "But..." Ben's patience snapped a little. "Look, are you going to help me out or just waffle over everything, here?" He took a step back as soon as he said that, literally, and figuratively, and sighed. "Sorry. That was a bit harsh." "Not really..." Anubis shifted, and Ben leapt back as the lucario swept in once more, low this time, one paw flashing out to clip his side lightly as the warrior went past, and his trainer whirled, falling back into a crouch. "It's just that you're not going to prove anything with all of this nonsense." The paws shifted on the pavement, and the jackal pokemon's aura pulsed. He was thinking of coming in from the right this time. Ben turned as the pokemon moved. He was going low... The young trainer leapt back and to the side, over the lucario's sweeping paw, and whirled to face him, as Anubis continued the offensive. The canine paws skidded slightly in the snow, before catching and pushing off. This time, Ben ducked low and under, spinning away from the pounce. "..." Ben waited, listening to the uneasy shuffling of Anubis' paws. "Something the matter?" Ben inquired quietly. He'd been right. It was rather like in Judo...move prediction. And counter...or in this case, avoidance. He could see why against a concentrated, repeated assault it would be less and less effective, as it took a lot of concentration, and eventually one would fail...but he'd been right. "What makes you say that?" Ben leapt back, as Anubis was going for a frontal assault this time, narrowly avoiding being tapped by the forepaw. He continued to backpedal, then dove low and under the lucario's paws, skidding a bit on the snow himself, as he tried to get back to his feet. And felt Anubis plant both paws on his back. "Okay. What was the point, again?" "Predict the enemy's move, then avoid it." Ben straightened up, brushing snow off his pants. "Detect." He suppressed the urge to chuckle at the vague sound of the lucario's teeth grinding a moment. "Could you actually say something that makes sense here? While it might be fun to be all mystical or whatever, it just makes people want to break your teeth." "I was being direct, Anubis." He raised a hand, to forestall the pokemon, as he sensed the rising frustration and movement, as if the pokemon was making ready to swat him. "Detect is a move. It avoids attacks. Allows you some time to set things up. The more you use it, the less effective it gets...but being able to ensure that you won't get hit, even just a few times, is no bad thing." The lucario shifted again, and Ben dropped his hand, letting his companion mull that over a moment or two. "It's kind of like in Judo, where you predict the enemy movement, to counter it and use it against them. Just...focused on simply avoiding the attacks completely rather than counterattacking, or redirecting, or the like." That was actually not all that uncommon of a concept in many martial arts, actually, but he'd only really studied Judo personally. "Um. Right..." Anubis sounded rather dubious, as Ben backed up a few paces. "Look, it works, really. You don't even need to sense Auras to do it." He heard the soft sniff, and sensed the disbelief of his companion, but decided not to comment for the moment. "C'mon. Let's practice a bit more, then head in, all right?" Ben fell back into a wary crouch, and the lucario harrumphed softly, but fell into stance himself, starting to circle warily. Ben smiled faintly, as he turned in place, following the lucario's movements with all his senses. This was going to be interesting... "Gotcha." Ben turned as Anubis bounded, in, noting the momentary hesitation that indicated he was going to feint, moving to avoid such. And right into the lucario as he actually followed through with the original attack. "So much for your fancy theories, eh?" "...." Ben fell back into stance, nettled despite himself at the smug tone, waiting for the next attack. Anubis stood there a moment or three, then sniffed. "Have it your way then." He leapt forward, intending to pin his trainer under him, pouncing. If Ben was going to insist on this silliness... Hands caught his forepaws as he leapt, and the lucario squawked as the two of them continued moving, Ben falling over backwards, planting a foot in the lucario's stomach and heaving, the heavy pokemon lifted off his feet and sent flying to land on his own back a few feet away, stunned momentarily. "Care to try that again?" the trainer inquired simply, rolling to his feet and falling back into a defensive stance. Anubis rolled back to his own, shuffling a bit. "...it wasn't avoiding the attack." Even as he finished the comment, he winced. It sounded sulky, even to himself. The lucario heaved a sigh. "How'd you do that, anyhow?" He hadn't been aware that Ben was strong enough to lift him into the air, let alone throw him several feet. "Leverage. Use the opponent's own momentum and force against them. Has its risks, but most people don't generally get back up after that unless they know how to fall." Ben shrugged slightly, taking a moment to start dusting snow off his back. In that moment, the lucario pounced again, aura flaring and the snow scraping under his paws a moment before he was airborne. Ben dropped flat to the ground and the warrior pokemon flew harmlessly overhead. "Anticipation, prediction, avoidance." Ben straightened up again, pretending he didn't hear his companion's teeth grinding as a retort was bit off as he started dusting himself off again. "Detect." "I still say it's just a fancy way of saying you're just dodging attacks." Ben gritted his teeth slightly, as he pretended not to hear that, focusing instead on the other two pokemon in the area at the moment. Faith looked up at him expectantly, while the as of yet unnamed Eevee that was Shinobi and Zelda's son sat a bit uncertainly beside her, looking confused as to why he might be here. He wasn't going to strangle the lucario, really. Even if it was tempting. "All right, you two. We're going to be trying something a little different here." He knelt, giving each of the foxlike pokemon a light scratch behind their long ears. "What you're going to do is take turns being attacker and defender, okay? We're working on a defensive trick. "What the defender is going to do is pay careful attention to the opponent's movements and use that to predict what they're going to do, so as to avoid it." He shifted slightly, and stood up. The confusion was obvious, but he wasn't done explaining, or trying to, yet. "Yeah, I know, probably doesn't make sense. But if you listen to their movements, and with you two, watch them...I've been told that the eyes, not the rest of the body is the best place to watch...you can see and hear what they plan to do. A moment of hesitation in their footsteps, they're likely about to slip to one side or the other. "People, at least those that can see, will often glance in the direction they are about to go, if even for but an instant, and if you're paying attention, little clues like this can be crucial. You can use that to predict what they're going to do, and then avoid it." He dusted his pants off. "Here, watch. Anubis, you mind?" He turned to the lucario not far off, finally, cocking his head to one side. Anubis sniffed, trying to act as if he hadn't been listening as avidly as the other two to this rather interesting speech from his trainer. He'd never heard about such things, and a lot of what he'd seen Ben doing these past few days was starting to make more sense. "I suppose..." The two of them backed up from each other, standing a few moments, before Anubis launched himself at the trainer, who ducked to the side and under the strike, then leapt into the air as Anubis skidded to a halt and swept a leg out to try and trip him up. Ben landed and spun, backing up a few steps carefully, managing not to trip over anything in the process, as Anubis circled a moment, then feinted to the right before coming in from the human's left, pulling up short as Ben didn't quite react in time, paw inches from their trainer's nose. Ben froze as well, for a moment, then backed up a few inches, and turned toward the curious audience of two. "It's not perfect, and the longer you try, the less accurate it will be to do, but it should buy some time to set up other defenses, or other tricks." He cocked his head at Faith a moment, and the leafeon swished her tail in slight confusion. "Anyhow...just try it out for a bit. Pay close attention, anticipate their action, and then avoid it." He took a few more steps back as the eevee and evolution squared off, the as yet unnamed fellow taking the initiative after a moment to bound toward Faith, the larger pokemon skipping back in an attempt to avoid such. The end result was a pile of silver, green and brown fur, and Ben carefully didn't chuckle as he helped them disentangle themselves. "Listen and watch closely, Faith. You can do this, sweetie." He ruffled the Eevee's fur, then backed off once more. "Pay attention to everything." The two faced off again, and this time, Faith was the one who darted forward, and squeaked as the young pokemon, little face scrunched into a mask of concentration, sidestepped at the last moment, letting her bound past, and right into a snowdrift. Ben coughed, as Anubis snorted, and went to extricate the grass type again. "See? Nicely done, squirt." The Eevee fluffed up a bit proudly at the compliment, then slicked his ears back as Faith glowered at him. "Your turn again, sweetie. Try it out, okay? Pay close attention, and then move." He took a step back as the two faced off once more. "Um...you just have to watch, carefully, and listen. Then you sidestep it at the last moment, or something like that. You gotta focus, I think..." The Eevee wilted under Faith's withering glare, and shut up, instead skittering forward to pounce again. The larger pokemon skittered to the side, but he still managed to tag her with at least one paw, furthering her disgruntlement. "You're cheating." "I am not!" The Eevee pounced again, nettled at the accusation, and Faith skittered out of the way, with a sniff. "Are too. So there." She dodged again as he pounced with greater frustration, then pounced herself, pinning him under her paws. He squealed, flailing at her. "You're the one cheating!" "Am not!" The Eevee squirted free of her paws and dodged her next attempts to hit him, before launching a counteroffensive. "Are too, are too! Cheater, cheater!" "...." Ben frowned a little as the two chased each other back and forth around the little clearing. He supposed it was working, however, for them, so after a bit of watching, he left them to it, turning to Anubis. "So, interested in trying it yourself?" The lucario shifted a little. "All it is is dodging. I can do that. This is silly." He watched the two pokemon chasing each other around the square, trying to tag each other with slight distaste. Ben sighed, standing there a moment or two. "All right, then, fine. If you don't want to, you don't have to." The two stood in silence for a few moments, as the two young pokemon continued to work at this, gaining proficiency. There had to be some way to impress upon the lucario that this was more than just dodging attacks. He watched the two carefully, noting how their auras flared and faded with their movements. He cocked his head to one side. The little Eevee was picking up on the tricks rather well, all things considered. He cocked his head to one side as he considered carefully all he was observing, while mulling things over. Unfortunately, Anubis needed the proof shoved under his nose to believe it, sometimes. The young trainer sighed after a few minutes of watching the two evolution pokemon going at it. "Alright then, if you don't want to try Detect out, how about we practice with Aura Spheres?" The lucario looked at him suspiciously. "Why?" Ben bit back the initial irritated reply, counting to ten, twice, before replying. "Well, if you think I've mastered the technique, then..." He waited a moment, but the lucario remained silent. "Didn't think so. And I need to do something right now. Is that enough for your paranoia?" "...." The lucario coughed after a moment. His tone shifted to somewhat more lecturing, as he spoke again, apparently deciding to pretend he hadn't heard his trainer, turning away from the two young pokemon. "What you've long since figured out is that this move is the gathering of the local aura. Part of your issue is that you are pretty inexperienced in sensing auras, so can only draw on the stronger ambiances to power it." Ben cocked his head to the side at that, looking thoughtful. "Pretty much, at this point, what you need to do is train to improve your aura sensing abilities as much as practice control. I mean," Anubis continued, with a shrug, "have you noticed that even trees have Auras?" Ben cocked his head to the side. "Sort of..." It was something he had noticed, generally only if he concentrated very hard, was very stressed out, or had overloaded his systems. He wasn't sure what the lucario was getting at. "Well, you can use that, too, if you can sense it, all right? That's all. Aura Spheres use Aura, it doesn't matter where it comes from." The lucario shrugged again. Ben considered quietly for a few moments, as the young Eevee once more dodged Faith handily and pounced. "I suppose that makes sense." He cocked his head to the side. "And it never misses because it tracks in on the aura of the target, right?" A suspicious glance toward the human, but Ben's expression was studiously blank. "That is the principle, yes..." the fighter replied cautiously after a moment. "In other words, it can't be dodged." The suspicious look crystallized. "Hey, wait a..." "Oy, squirt...you wanna try something a little more challenging?" Ben acted as if he hadn't even heard the protest, waving the two young pokemon over, squatting to give both of them another scratch. "Wait for the last moment, and then get out of the way, right? Predict it, then avoid it. Think you can pull it off?" The Eevee wagged his tail eagerly, and barked. He was game. He was sure he could manage anything that his trainer thought he could. "But...but..." The blind man continued to ignore the sputtering, standing up and backing up a few paces. "Didja hear earlier, squirt? What we were talking about? Keep it in mind, alright?" Ben raised his hands, carefully, a sphere of bluish energy starting to form in them as he concentrated. "You're going to kill him!" Anubis practically flailed as he watched with a sort of disbelieving horror. The Eevee looked over at him, ears going flat. He didn't want to die... "I believe he can do it. Sometimes a little faith goes far." The leafeon's ears perked a bit at that, as Ben shrugged. "You can do it, squirt. Detect." With that, he cast the sphere, and concentrated, focusing on all the auras in the area. The young pokemon skittered backwards as the sphere homed in, and the lucario made an inarticulate sound of protest. The Eevee's ears flicked rapidly, as he stopped dead, eyes fixed on the orb, little face utterly focused. The lucario started forward, then stopped as a hand closed on his shoulder. "You stupid..." "Watch." The sphere arrowed in on the motionless target, and the Eevee dodged aside at the last moment, and the lucario gaped as the sphere impacted harmlessly against the trunk of the tree he had stopped in front of. "Just a fancy way to say that we're dodging attacks." Ben let go of Anubis' shoulder and went over to scoop the pup up. "I knew you could do it, squirt!" The trainer laughed, kneeling down as Faith yapped and pawed at his pant legs, jealous of the attention, and he let her clamber onto his shoulders. The lucario watched the three of them, awash in conflicting emotions. It was true that Aura Sphere wasn't supposed to be avoidable. Ben was making much of the two young pokemon, as he stood to one side. The young man had been trying to explain it to him for a while now, but... Focusing on the act of dodging to the exclusion of all else had helped suppress the young pokemon's Aura...thinking back, it had been doing so all along. Ben had likely noticed. And everything had an aura that lived...as he'd said. When the Eevee had focused so on the matter, his aura had become less distinct, in a fashion...and dodging at the last moment, around the tree... It was so obvious, in retrospect. It wasn't like Aura Spheres were actually intelligent. They simply homed in on Auras. And even trees had Auras... And all he'd been doing was being obstructive, and argumentative the entire time that Ben had been trying to teach him something. "I..." "Let's practice a bit more, and let you try things out, hey?" Ben spoke almost before Anubis did, and held a hand out, the other arm still cradling the excited young Eevee. The young trainer cocked his head to the side, as he waited. There was a moment of silence, then the lucario grinned. Some things didn't need to be said, nor did people really need, or always want, to hear them. He thought he got it now... "All right then. Let's go!" Edited by DarthEevee, Apr 5 2010, 06:49 AM.

I really love Ben and Anubis. I dunno if I can point this out enough. But it was a nice little freeform. I know 4k words aren't little in the least but... I don't know. It felt short? Either way, I feel like it could have been a little bit longer. It explained everything pretty well, at least as far as Detect is concerned. I like how we have two slightly different ways of portraying Aura, but both of them are correct, at least in my mind. Random: It's not Gexp that you get from freeforms, it's freeform EXP. There is a difference. :P /random I also read the thing twice while I was waffling around, trying to figure out how to grade it, and that wasn't an issue. I could read it twice and not be bored with it or anything. Not sure why, but this is definitely a positive thing. Now... the rewards. Or at least... I'm gonna explain my thoughts about the rewards. Like I said above... it was short. Good enough for Detect... not quite so much for Aura Sphere. Freeforms seem to work best when the focus is on one thing. You went more into Aura Sphere this time, but I felt like this freeform was more about Detect then Aura Sphere, which... you know, it was. Surprise, surprise. So... no Aura Sphere this time. It kinda felt like it was tacked onto the Detect parts of it... not exactly in a bad way, but I don't think it explained everything involved in Aura Sphere quite enough. I'm sure this sounds frustrating, but if you really want to learn it, take a freeform and focus on just Aura Sphere. I know you can do it. So! Keep the 8.5 from the last one. +.6 to it from this one. Ben is now a Move Tutor for Detect. Congrats. |

Giving me a challenge there, are we? Well. I can hardly resist such things...and besides, I want that ability. n.- I'm glad it was an enjoyable read, and I suppose if I'm going to to a whole freeform about Aura Sphereage, there will be more Ben and Anubis stories in the future. *g* And yeah, yeah. I know freeform XP is different. It's just that there is no FEXP sprite or something to use, and it's not exactly just EXP, so I kinda overgeneralize. *raspberries* |
