Go for it, run towards it, dive in head first. Live life with no regrets!
Permission: N/A

Word Count: 2,208

Summary: Steely and her group of Pokemon stop for the night beside the river. She and Raikou have a bit of a talk about Steely's motives and what she thinks about where they all are now.

Reward: Happiness

Note: Couple things... first, this freeform is really... rambling. Or at least I think it is. It was written in chunks over a period of a couple months then stitched together recently and finished up. Because of that, it might be a little meandering. Also, Steely is a bit of an oddball rambler, so... yeah, if that's a problem, I do realize it. Can't really help that she's scatterbrained. :x

Also, if you're wondering why Raikou talks... I think all Legendary Pokemon can talk, regardless of what they are. From Articuno to Arceus, I think they're all capable of psychic speech. So... yeah.

...and yeah, the title sucks. Couldn't think of anything.

The land of Opaddeka was quite a bit darker on this particular night then was considered normal... the huge power outage was the culprit of that one. And the culprits of that were sitting on the banks of the river, looking up at the sky. Each and every star was ten times brighter then she was used to, and Steely had never seen the sky dotted with so many bright little lights. She was used to the bright city lights, since she had only really looked up at the stars when she was a child. Weird how things change.

They were stopping here for the night, before heading the rest of the way to Rose Town. The adventure had started out uneventful, up until that Pokemon Hunter had tried to steal Raikou, anyways. Then, well... things had certainly gotten interesting. It was another of those times that Steely wasn't sure if she was dropping acid somehow, or something.

But, here they were. Like Pokemon and their trainers tended to be; with the world stretched out endlessly before them.

So, what now?

The voice was unfamiliar and gave her a little start, surprising her into sitting bolt upright from where she was lounging against the riverbank sand. Zelda and Hurricane both looked surprised, and were looking over at their newest 'friend'. It wasn't even looking at them, red-amber gaze cast up at the heavens.

Steely stared at Raikou, who was adamant on not looking at any of them, lying a bit away from the group as he was. The trainer was unsure what to think, and looked at her Espeon for some assistance. The pink feline was looking at their thunder-throwing friend, as if trying to figure him out.

Go talk to him. We've been so quiet the whole way here, aside from our little side adventure, I bet he could just use someone to talk to, Zelda said privately to Steely, turning her almond shaped eyes in their trainer's direction, Maybe you should tell him your story?

It wasn't a bad idea, at any rate. The whole way so far, Steely had simply let Raikou do whatever he wanted to, allowing him time to adjust to the life of being with a trainer. Any time she needed him, she had asked him as nicely as possible to help, and if he didn't want to, then she didn't force him. She wasn't going to force him into anything if he didn't want to, and she'd let him be as distant as he wanted to be. He seemed to be adjusting well enough, but... he wasn't quite there, yet. Steely figured that the beast had unanswered questions, so... perhaps now was a good time to clear some things up. At the very least, she was going to try.

Steely looked back at the big cat, and once the thought solidified in her mind, she pushed herself painfully up and walked over. The movement caught Raikou's eye, bringing his attention to her as she walked over next to him, close enough to get a clawed paw right through the ribcage if he wanted to.

He didn't make any move to help her as she slowly lowered herself down to sit, wincing when she finally did and it jarred her cracked ribs a little bit. She had to stop hurting herself like this, she thought while she took a painful breath. Raikou didn't move at all, instead just watching the fragile human. Why he didn't just chomp her little neck when she had first let him out was beyond him. There was absolutely no reason for it.

Steely looked over when the cat huffed at seemingly nothing and looked back up at the sky. They were so distant, which was not how trainer and Pokemon were supposed to be. She had to change this, somehow. The best way for two creatures to become closer was to simply spend time with them, so... best get started.

"I guess I'll tell you how come I can do this," she held out a hand, which Raikou looked over at, as it crackled with a faint, bright blue electricity. That was the thing that he was curious about. Humans did not do that. "It also has to do with you," the beast jerked his head up at that, still only slightly more interested. She grinned at him, face lit up by the blue glow, "Thought that'd get you interested,"

Nearby, Zelda's ears flicked up to listen as well, as did Hurricane's. The two had a deep bond with Steely already, yet this was one of her great personal secrets that she very rarely told anyone about. They had the common courtesy to stay out of the deepest, darkest parts of her mind... for the most part anyways. There was quite a difference between prying secrets, and hearing them being told willingly.

"I sort of realize that, everything I've done up till this point has been because of some false idea I'd gotten once, when I wasn't quite right in the head," she started, staring down at the ball of lightning crackling in the palm of her hand, "I don't regret any of it, though, but I'm finally realizing that things aren't as I thought they were," she tilted her head slightly, the same blue color of the electricity being reflected in her eyes, "It all kind of started from some crazy idea to be something that I'm not,"

She started laughing, closing her hand as the electricity dispersed. The cat didn't get it, tilting and turning his head a bit to the side, raising an eyebrow if he had one. When he didn't get clarification right away, the armor plated circle in the middle of his facemask crackled to get her attention. It surprised her enough to make her jerk back, and he growled, nodding.

"Yeah, it is kinda confusing,"

Raikou huffed at her, a breath of hot, stale air. It reminded Steely how they had all been frozen in stone for how long. And it made her cough a little bit. "My point is... heh, I don't even know what my point is,"

Zelda and Hurricane looked at each other, off on the side. Steely was nervous and rambling, and they knew it. Perhaps they could help.

The fighter stood up and padded over, sitting down cross-legged next to them, I think your point is more complicated then you believe it is, he waved a paw, even while Zelda walked over and sat down. Think back. Well back. the Aura-reading fighter said, resting his hand paws on his knees. Zelda was next to him, and daintily wrapped her tail around her paws, ears straight up.

Steely did as her Pokemon told her, to see if there was anything that would catch her mind's eye. Her mind went all the way back... to what she believed was the beginning. "I became a Pokemon Trainer because I thought I was something special. Because I thought I was destined for something great. That's obviously not true,"

Her pair of bonded Pokemon glanced at each other, but stayed silent. Neither of them believed that for a second, but they certainly weren't about to interrupt. The distant saber-toothed tiger was intently watching her now, wondering where this was going. The girl was obviously nervous and unsure of what to say, but he could see the effort and sincerity.

"Now, I am a trainer for my family. My Pokemon. I could never leave any of them," she looked down at her hands, closing them into fists and watching the electricity form, "I would also do anything for them. Once I figured out I could make tiny sparks, I promised myself that I would always be able to help my Pokemon, and that they would never need to worry, like I never need to worry,"

She stopped suddenly, forgetting what her point had been. Was that all she had to say there? She figured as much. "And by now I've gotten wrapped up in all kinds of things, so I can't quit and fade into the background quietly," she admitted, thinking. The fight with Darkrai had been kind of the beginning of all the seriousness. That was where she had met most of the trainers that she continued coming across... Jolt included. Then things had just happened from there... the Rangers, and now she was in the OME, with the threat of Team Rocket looming. Not to mention all of her human and alien friends she had made, in addition to her Pokemon. Cerby and Alex, both OME comrades, both people that she cared deeply for. She wouldn't let them face Team Rocket alone.

Some part of her wasn't personally worried about Team Rocket... they weren't the only ones with a legendary anymore.

And why was all of this because of me? the feline spoke, giving the trio a start again. Steely went over what she said in her head, and realized that was never explained. "Oh, right," she reached down and started to undo the buckles on her left glove, tugging the leather off, "I was struck by lightning a couple years back. I spent a lot of time in the hospital healing afterward, but I was never quite the same," she paused, thinking she heard some maniacal laughing in the corner of her mind. Must just be imagining things.

"I thought it was destiny sending me a sign. You are the Legend of Thunder... so I thought it was my destiny to capture you," she chuckled, rubbing her thumb over the scarred skin on her forearm, "Something must have worked out right, because here we are," she looked back up at the cat, who was listening with an unreadable expression.

"But like I said before, it was some stupid idea. Thinking I was something that I wasn't. I'm not important. I'm not special. I'm just another trainer," she looked over at Raikou, "It took me a while to realize it, though. I thought I could be something awesome, but I'm really not," she shrugged, flexing her left hand and arm, feeling the stiffness of the scar up her arm, but also feeling the electrical current arc over her skin. It never hurt, unless she built up too much, but it always provided the strangest sensation. Curiously, the lightning cat leaned over to look at her scar, pulling away after a few seconds of staring at it.

A kricketot chirped somewhere in the silence of the night, and Zelda and Hurricane exchanged a look. Neither was quite sure what to say. Raikou saw them looking at each other, and remembered something else he had been pondering.

So how come I do not have a name like the rest of them? he asked, while looking at Zelda and Hurricane. Looking to where he was looking, she thought how best to answer the question. Admittedly, it was something that she didn't really have a good answer for. "Didn't figure you wanted one. You still hate me, remember?" she chuckled at the cat, who only huffed in response. "And I haven't thought of a good one yet. It'll come to me when the time is right,"

Normally, nicknames just came to her right away, but Raikou was different. She thought that it was because of the intense dislike he'd had for her so far... and one big question. What kind of name do you give a Legendary Pokemon? It had to be... good.

They sat in silence for a few minutes while Steely pondered this, among other things. Eventually, she ran out of things to mull over. "So... to answer your question," Steely stood up, grinning from ear to ear now, and flexed her arms triumphantly, crackling with faint electricity, "We press on! To wherever we want to go. We're a team and a family, so we do whatever we want together! Granted, only part of our family is here now, but you'll meet Cerby and the others sometime soon,"

Leaning over, she offered her hand to Raikou, who blinked and jerked his head back at it, then looked up at her, "I'll show you the world and keep you safe from evil bastard trainers, and you get to be free from that prison. We'll run to our heart's content," she grinned, a slight wheeze in her voice from her ribs bothering her again. She had spunk, he had to admit. Didn't count for too much... at least yet. He could see some kind of potential, though. For what, he'd have to wait and see.

He thought, for a moment, that perhaps her reasons for becoming a trainer weren't so farfetched after all.

The Legendary Beast raised his paw, and to Steely's surprise, put it right in her hand, curling his razor sharp claws gently around it. It started as a tense moment, with Zelda and Hurricane ready to beat the big cat down if he tried to hurt her, but they sunk back to where they had been when they saw it was nothing threatening. The trainer was baffled as to where the big cat picked up the gesture, but it told her all she needed to know. They would work things out.

Hmm...

A nice little story. Admittedly, I was expecting a cheap, zero-effort attempt at some happiness, but I was pleasantly surprised.

In my own opinion, I do think it could have been a tad bit longer, possibly delving deeper into Steely's history a bit, but maybe she's not quite ready to disclose that information to Raikou.

A Legendary Pokémon's trust is a fickle mistress...maybe. They are (probably) the most powerful Pokémon out there, and they probably deserve to be a little hot-headed and throw their trust around haphazardly like a hot potato; and there's no reason Steely should try a bold attempt at diving head-first into a relationship building session with a legie, these sort of things surely take time.

I definitely believe Steely still has a good ways to go to earn Raikou's full trust, and that will come with more time spent with the beast, as well as an opening of hearts, and he absolutely needs a bad-ass name. (Like...Thor. No. Um...Sparkplug! xD *shot*)

The EXP goes in my giant pot, and I'll apply the happiness when I get to this point in canon. Should be in the next mod or the one after, but yeah. :D
