I trembled in the cold air of the marsh; this place didn't bring good memories. I could almost feel the arms of the Elders poking through the ground, grabbing my feet and pulling me back down to the Family - we had an agreement to let me go free, to experience the world as the present Virgin was still strong. Lucinda though told me the Elders were always quick to change their minds and so I should go far away as soon as possible.

Familiar places brought me comfort and since I had went through so much pain - I guess Hillmoss was where I had to return to. I received a call from Professor Willow anyway, telling me about my father working for her father and that maybe I could be some help. I wished I had something to help me traverse through the fog but I had none. Jingle leapt forwards, his little legs bounding and I kept up, just hoping that his nose again will prove true and bring me out of this mess. The compass that I had conjured up was messed up again due to the demonic nature of the Fog. I had no choice but to trust the brown fluffball.

"Jingle, don't move too fast!"

"Phew, that was quite a stumble."

Jayde was leading me from the skies; it wasn't that hard to see due to the shimmering light that was casted over her body. I had finally dug out the TMs I had been saving and taught her Light Screen and Reflect. Now, she was protected from many attacks - they halved damage which was useful in any case. I recalled my footsteps and finally reached this stop, just outside Misthenge. I looked at my Pokemon's health and they were fine.

So trudging on towards Mayriver. Hopefully things will be great there. I planned to enter in the gym battle; it got me excited. I had three badges; or technically, they belonged to Airlia, and all from another dimension - one called Legacy, I had heard. I wanted to prove myself though; and for that I needed a badge of my own.

Buzzz. Buzzzz.

A sound began to rise in the air. The thick fog blocked any attempt to see around yourself. The sound grew louder, growing closer. It was like one of those horror movies where you can hear the monster breathing but couldn't see where it was coming from.

It was right on top of you now. From the air Jayde was your best hope of locating whatever it was that stalked you. Then again maybe it was just as blind as you were. In fact this new theory was proven quite correct when two glinting forms collided with the air born Togekiss.

"Yan!" Two startled cries rose together as the pair regained their senses. The smaller of the pair began to quickly apologize to Jayde for having flown into her. But her chatter was cut short by the larger and seemingly older male.

"Yanma!" He shrieked in anger. Clearly he felt Jadye was in the wrong here and was demanding her to apologize to them. His daughter rolled her eyes at her arrogant father and buzzed down to your level.

"Ma, yan." She stated shaking her head. Seemed she didn't want any confrontation but her father wasn't about to back down. From the way the female Yanma acted this was a common occurrence in their family.

Somehow, Yanma and I were connected in some inexplicable way - I travelled through here once, and a Yanmega attacked me with such gusto, it actually scared me. Sanctuary had to travel up there to defeat it; thank god it was swift and fast. This Yanma though seemed nice. Through the thick fog I couldn't see much, but Jayde had glided down to find out what was happening and bang! they collided. I winced as Jayde tumbled backwards in the air and the Yanma was knocked. The insect buzzed away while another came and buzzed as well.

"Sorry," I said, making an action to the older Yanma. The littler one though fluttered in front of me, her green eyes rolling about - as if exasperated with the other. I laughed. Hmmm, fate had brought me again to another Yanma; could it be telling me...

"Hey, wild idea. Would you like to join us?" I asked the littler Yanma. She seemed like a sensible one; unlike the bigger one, I laughed to myself, watching him fume at Jayde, who just gave a smile while her eyes begged for help from me. "We're going up to Mayriver. And you look like a pretty bored young Pokemon, looking for adventure." I pulled out a Pokeball.

"Relax, I'm not going to toss this on you, just making an offer. If you don't want to, you can just go fly on your pretty way." I smiled, proffering the ball.

For some inexplicable reason, Pokemon could understand the speech of humans, though of course this phenomenon was not reversed. The unintelligible buzzing of the Yanma made little sense to Layla, but the insects in turn could understand her language. The father listened intently as the trainer began to speak, first apologizing for her Pokemon's supposed wrong and then going on to make her daughter some sort of offer... what!? Who did this female think she was? As if his daughter would be stupid enough to accept!

But of course, it was hard to look into those eyes and refuse her anything. The tiny Yanma hovered close to Layla's face, taking in the offer, realizing its implications, and suddenly buzzing about with joy. She was definitely grown up, and it was past time to leave the comfort of her father's nest and move out into the great big world. Of course, daddy was the only one she had left, and it was for this reason that she had stayed. But, surely... he would understand, wouldn't he?

The female Yanma turned, training her bright, shining green orbs on her father. The gruff Pokemon returned the gaze, determined to be unyielding but absolutely melting at the sight of his girl's sincere face. Suddenly, the reality of their situation crashed down on him, and he realized what it was that continually rooted his daughter to his side. Was that really fair? His ego would tell him yes, but that nagging conscious buried deep down in there told him otherwise. She was just trying to make him happy.

Seeing the sensibility of Layla's offer but also struggling to cling to some semblance of his fatherhood, the male Yanma floated closer, turning away from Layla and training a fiery gaze on the Togekiss by her side. With the Pokemon having just crashed into him, he felt rather ridiculous proposing this stipulation, but it was the only condition he would agree to. Holding back a snarl, he addressed Jayde, spelling out his terms. His daughter was honestly shocked at her father's proposal, as it meant he at least was willing to allow her to live her own life.

"Best me in a match... and I will allow my daughter to travel with your trainer. That is the condition."

.4 - nice characterization.

The little Yanma somersaulted through the air, eyes wide with excitement, her semi-transparent veined wings buzzing; she wanted to go, to breathe new air. I could tell that her heart was in it - but her green eyes stared at her father. Of course, he was her anchor to this world, the one that made her stay in this foggy place - I could tell it from her eyes. She was asking permission, it seemed; and the older Yanma fluttered towards Jayde, eyes burning with determination, with passion.

He buzzed.

Jayde nodded; "He challenges us. If we beat him, she can come with us." His daughter's green eyes widened with shock; what, that her father proffered himself up for a beating? I laughed to myself; I was being overconfident. I couldn't fight and that was the truth. I was new to this, avoiding almost every battle so far, only managing to defeat...

Oh. The single Pokemon that I managed to defeat was a Yanmega.

But that was Sanctuary, and he wasn't with me today. And since the older Yanma did look at Jayde intently, I guess it was challenge meant for her. I nodded - "Take flight." Jayde suddenly plunged her wings backwards, propelling her white soft body forwards into the air, blasting white light behind herself as she prepared for a battle with the older Yanma.

And as the battle started, the father's eyes averted, I quietly asked the daughter, "Do you want your father to come along? It could always be a family trip."

The younger female Yanma turned away just a little bit, as if this human was asking her an embarrassing question. "No," it countered, voice soft, "it'd be strange to be there with him." That was the end of that; only one Yanma would come along on this journey.

This battle was a matter of pride, simply. The indignation bristling in the older Yanma was... very much a strange happening, and now it would be brought out onto the field of battle. There was going to be a fight, and that meant but one thing; if the Yanma could hold out for just a little while, then this fight would drag on well enough that there would be a good battle in it. Perhaps he could show his daughter that this world was just not her place...

As the Togekiss began wishing, the Yanma was already moving to attack, using its ancient powers to summon up its strengths of all kinds and strike with the power of the rocky earth. The Togekiss stumbled, and were it not for this strike from the Yanma father, it would have destroyed him and allowed Jayde to continue on. But it had not. Thusly, the Yanma, in an act of self-preservation, created illusory copies of himself.

The Yanma was physically struggling, but he was holding in there. Another good hit and it would be over - but could the Togekiss hit it first?

.3 - Wish?
---

"Stop, Jayde."

Jayde was gearing up already, her body tensed with effort, her eyes glowing with power as she was charging up for an Extremespeed - her attack stat might not be great, but she knew she could charge forwards first if the old Pokemon didn't use his Quick Attack. She also knew that his Quick Attack wasn't likely to take her out, while her Extremespeed probably would. However, upon hearing my words and my hand on her back, I stopped her.

"Isn't this enough, sir? Enough to prove to you we can take care of your daughter?"

I didn't want to hurt the older Pokemon unnecessarily; I didn't know if he took offence to this, but I didn't think an unconscious Pokemon on the ground would be very safe. And judging from the younger female Yanma, I could see in her eyes, that she didn't want him to be too hurt. I had potions to heal his wounds, but prevention was always better than cure. Jayde hovered in the air, ready for any sudden attacks. And from the corner of my eye, I could see her, holding on to a single Yawn. If she got attacked, at least the Wish from the previous round could help.

But for now, I refused to attack.

Old age was wearing on the insect's ability to endure, although the mismatch of skill was just as much a factor, where even a younger, more robust version of himself would have fallen just as easily to the same tactics. The end before it began, with his blood rushing, feeling the invigorating heat spread to furthermore intensify the deadly precision and swiftness of his skills, yet cut down so swiftly and thoroughly by a single attack, wounding his confidence as much as his body. Old age did add many things to behavior: pride, desperation, the need to protect, to persevere; even with the phenomenal disadvantage in which he faced he knew he could not win, yet struggled on to try. The code of the ones raised in the wild, where there were no compromises, no truces- only a victor and the defeated. He knew he could act faster than this trainer fluff, land a strike fueled by his pride and desperation, the need to protect his daughter, to persevere-

The blur of orange stopped him. The smaller female planted herself in his line of attack, dissuading further attempts with a shake of her head and eyes pleading. The price of freedom wasn't worth this, the sacrifice of his health to prove this trainer's worth. She couldn't understand the demands that only battle could provide, why he would push himself this way instead of simply saying no in his customary authoritative tone, but meeting the older one's eyes spoke of the tangle of emotions that ran its course through his head as clearly as if he'd spoken them allowed. He forced himself down and hung his head, admitting defeat.

Whatever jubilation the daughter had initially felt was gone, replaced only with the growing concern of her father's well-being. Family was family despite its misgivings, and even the opportunity to live could never override that basic responsibility. But it wasn't as one-sided as it seemed to the outsider, where one displayed her thoughts openly, and one deemed it wiser to keep them hidden. She'd proffered a berry to him, a Sitrus she'd previously found on their adventures before meeting the straying trainer, and he accepted it without comment. A deep silence between the pair, communication without words nor gestures, almost telepathic, seeing the train of thought through one another's eyes, though never really understanding. Slowly, he turned his gaze from his brood to the trainer, contemplating and accepting, and flew off. He could no longer influence his daughters course. It was time to live and let go.

And the daughter was left only with this vague feeling of abandon, watching her fathers form disappear into the swirling miasma, left with the decision to follow or stay. In the end, shed simply turned to the girl, expectant and wandering on what grand plans she had in mind for her.

The wild Yanma struggled, his eyes fierce with determination. It wasn't a close call; I wasn't being cocky here, but he had no chance to win and I really didn't want to bring him down - even if I was going to heal him again with a Revive. Hurting an old Pokemon, one ages older, didn't go well with Jayde's ethics as well - that was when her Yawn came in handy. It'd bring him to a calm sleep, where she would stop battling. I never liked battling - was never my thing. That was why I was surprised, despite all logic, despite all the arrows pointing to his defeat, the Yanma dashed forwards, his wings buzzing proudly, almost triumphant even, that I had made such a choice.

Pleading eyes - the little girl shot right in front of the older male. There was a connection right there; I blushed, turning away. This wasn't for me to interfere with - it was even probably my fault for bringing it up. Why did I even say what I said? As I closed my eyes, berating myself, I remembered the face of the little Yanma, her eyes apologising for her father. She kept him going and without her, he probably couldn't survive. What in the world did I get her into?

And then I remembered her other face: the one when I made my offer. It was clear that despite taking such good care of her father, she had dreams, dreams that were yet to be fulfilled, dreams that promised her more than what she already had. Her father was keeping her here in this stuffy foggy place - and she wanted to be free of him, no matter how awful that sounded. Her father fought well to keep her with him; but he never needed to do that. She'd listen to him; she'd go with him and not me.

He wanted to let her go. It was time for her to experience the world and he knew that.

I opened my eyes, realizing that fact. He had wanted her to go; he understood his place in her world. Turning around to face the little female Yanma, I realized her father was gone; whatever they had to discuss was over. She stared at me; was it my fault I got her into this? I held out a Luxury Ball: "Here, this is for you." Jayde grinned as she perched on a nearby cliffhead. Her gentle voice: "I'm sure you'd be happy here with us. Don't worry about anything; Layla's great. Tell us what you wish to do here; and maybe your name, if you've one."

I grinned, hand stretched out with a ball. There was still time for her to make a decision; what would she choose?

Yanma stared through the mist in the direction her father had vanished. The human still waited, watching her. She realized she was still giving her the choice to go after her father. Yet deep down she knew that wasn't what she truly wanted, and it wasn't what her father would want her to do.

Yanma turned back to face Layla. Her large eyes shimmered, tears of sorrow mingled with joy. At long last she was free to live life as she chose. She would miss her father but Yanma knew her destiny lay far beyond this foggy marshland. Sensing this human had a kind soul, she didn't doubt that one day she'd see her father again.

"Ma yan." She bowed her head to Layla as she buzzed closer and encased herself within the luxurious orb. The ball shook halfheartedly in the woman's hand but soon the familiar ping rang through the valley. Yanma was Layla's.
