Waking up on the park bench Rupert stretched a little as the sunlight gleamed his hungover face, revealing his toothless mouth as he yawned. It had been a big night for the now homeless-looking hillbilly. He wasn't in fact homeless, though. He owned a little shack on the outskirts of town. It wasn't much but it had a bed and that was all he needed, apparently.

Luck had struck Rupert on this beautiful blue skied morning because when he did in fact stop his stretching, he found that someone had mistaken him for homeless. His eyes shifted wider as he counted his penny's tinkling in the huge jug grasped in his right hand, 3000 in total. "I can buy me another pig fo' this," chuckled Rupert as he lifted his straw hat to scratch his red neck. Out of the had toppled a flyer from the bar, the night before. It was encouraging people to become Pokemon trainers. Now he had never really thought about a career. I mean, his father was married to his father's sister and all they did was argue. Not a very good mentor to look up to especially as Rupert never had a sister of his own. He always figured he'd just live life in the bar and in his shack. It wasn't a very wealthy lifestyle but hey, it was something. "I'ma get me one of them there pokemons," muttered Rupert as a family of three walked past, shaking there heads at the homeless looking redneck.

He lifted himself up off of the bench dizzily and continued to stagger towards the world known pokemon lab. He arrived at the door and proclaimed, "Y'all got a pokemons fo' me?!" Again, people shook there heads at the redneck yelling at the un-open door.

This wasn't the first time the beautiful Professor Willow had to deal with those who looked like homeless people. She could still rather starkly recall the time she had dealt with a homeless man who had selected a Treecko because it vaguely resembled food... or, at least, she could recall his stench. But that was how things went. If she could entrust them with a Pokémon, then she registered them with the Pokémon League. That was her duty.

So when Rupert knocked on the door to the Willow Laboratory, she greeted him herself. This was reasonably normal; only if she was extremely busy in the middle of her research would she have her lab assistants answer the door for her. Wearing her lab coat, and her brown hair done up in a bun, she was still her ever-happy self. And damn did she look good.

"Welcome to the Willow Laboratory! I'm Professor Willow. Please, do come inside. I take it you're here for a Pokémon - most people are. If so, follow me."

There was Rupert's option. If he did decide to follow behind the Professor, he'd see the main entrance hall, which had some potted plants in the corners, some red waiting chairs, a reception desk to the back and on either side of that desk, two corridors leading down further into the lab. The Professor took the one on the right, and then into the first right-hand door, which led to a massive room filled with white shelves almost groaning under the weight of the Pokéballs sitting on them.

And then, in the centre of the room, a large blue-padded and black-meshed playpen, filled with Pokémon of twelve different species. They, despite their type differences, were all playing together, frolicking, having fun. Many of them knew it might be their last day with their friends. The Professor stood at the edge of the playpen, hands grabbing the high railing, smiling at her charges, before she looked back to Rupert.

"So as you can see here, we have many Pokémon for you to choose from. Four Fire-types, four Grass-types and four Water-types. Do you know about the Pokémon here and have one in mind, or would some further explanation help you?"

Rupert, still half drunk, startled a tad as this beautiful woman approached him out of behind the door that moments before copped a mouthful of redneck slang. She encouraged him to move on in to the lab and follow her down a corridor on the right-hand side. He moved forward without hesitation whilst slapping his bare feet on the cold floor. Nearing the door on the right he noticed a play pen, beautifully built, along with a desk and some red waiting chairs. It seemed like a very important place to be in and Rupert almost felt honored to be apart of something so special.

Inside the blue play pen were pokemon, 12 of them to be exact. They all frolicked without much of a fuss. It seemed they were all good friends. It seemed too that the Professor had stopped to enjoy their happiness in the pen, looking back at Rupert to say something once more. Rupert replied with a simple, "Hyuk, they sure do look happy in that there pen," scratching his back side he went on, "I like the look of that lizard thang'. You won't find nuttin' like that on ma' Pa's farm." Rupert wandered over to the red chairs, the stench from his un-brushed toothless mouth catching flight in the cold air con. He sat down, hands in his head. This was a pretty big decision. He'd have this thing for the rest of his life. Or so he hoped.

Looking up he asked the Professor, "What do ya call that there lizard?" Followed by a puzzled expression.

That lizard thang.

Professor Willow watched with interest as this man decided to examine the creatures available, and by the looks of the person, he didn't know much about what was actually happening. That was fine, she'd be able to explain the whole process for him without any trouble on her part. She did wonder if he was going to treat this thing right, but...

"That lizard is a Treecko. It's a Grass-type. All Pokémon belong to either one or two elemental types, some of which are strong to others while weak to yet other types. Grass-types are strong against Water-types while weak against Fire-types. Water is strong against Fire and weak to Grass, and Fire is strong against Grass and weak to Water. The Grass-type is known for being reasonably easy to raise, but not for its overall brute strength."

If Rupert was still interested in the Treecko, she'd be able to get it for him without any difficulty. Lifting the Treecko out of its playpen, she placed it in front of the man to let the critter get a good look at him, and decide whether the trainer would be good. On top of that, she fetched one of the myriad Pokéballs from the shelves, and a little green velvet pouch from the cabinets in the room.

"Is this the one you were looking for, or would you like to consider some of our other Pokémon, sir?"

Rupert gazed, listening, but not, at the same time. It all sounded like a big bunch of slurr that he sure as hell didn't want to remember. He began to shift his gaze to the belongings of the Lab and the scurry of people wandering around obviously busy with some sort of job. He shifted his focus back on to the beautiful Professor who was standing near the cabinets with a green pouch of some sort and a red and white ball in her hand. He wasn't listening but was sure she'd asked him a question judging by the look on her face. He simply replied with a, "Uhh, sure," not knowing to what he was actually agreeing to.

He noticed that the green lizard thing was out of the playpen and had been placed in front of his very, smelly at the least, feet. It too had the same expression as the Professor and almost looked bored at the sight of Rupert. "Yeah, I, uhh..I like this here lizard. I was just wonderin', bu' say you stomp on one of them house lizards but only get it's tail. If something stomps on my here lizard's tail does it grow back juz' the same? I don't want no thing that doesn't gots a tail if it's suppose ta'. That's kinda ewwy," Chuckled Rupert with an emphasis on the 'eww' part.

He sat, dumb founded by how he could conjure such an intellectual question all on his own, and awaited a response.

...What a weird question.

"Normally, the tail wouldn't fall off in the first place. If it does, things can heal over time, yes. We also have Pokémon Centers dotted around the Opaddeka Region in most cities that can help with that sort of thing. In battle, that sort of thing won't occur, so please treat your Treecko with respect to ensure that kind of thing doesn't happen. After all, Pokémon are our friends."

The conviction in the Professor's voice was enough to make most people agree with her; the little creatures that roamed the region were generally amiable enough to people if the people acted honestly and treated them with respect. Then it became a mutual respect. While this man might have been somewhat uncouth, he too had that chance. Hopefully, the Professor's next action was going to be justified.

"Here you are," she said, pressing the red and white Pokéball into Rupert's hands. Then she handed over that green sack, a small velvet-y pouch that was bulging with items. Whatever was in there was probably expensive overall.

"This is the Pokéball, or storage device, for your Treecko. You can summon or recall it through there. As well, there are another five Pokéballs for you to capture more Pokémon, as well as a Pokédex. The Pokédex is an electronic index of Pokémon that can answer a lot of your questions. Other than that, feel free to ask me anything, but you're ready to head out into the grasslands and start your journey now!"

"Well as long as it grows all the way back," slurred Rupert as he held out his hands to grab the various items off of the professor.

He listened intently with the explanation of all these new things he possessed. The best being the Pokedex in his opinion. It sure would come in handy and Rupert sure would have a bunch of ridiculous questions. It would be like having the Professor in his pocket at all times. She sure was pretty he thought as his thoughts began to move from the topic on hand. He often did that- day dreamed. His attention span seemed to resemble around about the time it takes to make a coffee.

He had many faults, like not being able to eat hard food. His gum's just couldn't munch into things like his old chompers could. He lost 'em riding his old man's bull. It was a ferocious thing and didn't seem to like Rupert as much as he liked it. Despite losing all his teeth to the beast he still considered it a friend. One of which he didn't have many.

Snapping out of his day dream he thanked the Professor hastily, a little embarrassed that he would think of her that way right in front of her. He took of his straw hat and did a little bow as he backed out of the lab, his overall bottoms scuffing along the floor as he did so. He met the door with his back and turned to open it. Letting out a little, "Yee-har!" He did a scip and a hop and off he went, storing all his new things in his giant beer jug, they clattered together as he walked.
