It's not worth it.
Something about making a sport out of a city filled with Pokerus-infected Pokemon rubbed Prosper the wrong way. Still, he supposed it was better than some alternative that the government was capable of coming up with. This way, hardly any Pokemon would be terribly harmed in the process, and soon this whole infection mess would be over. Hopefully, that would be soon, and everyone could go back to their regular lives and forget this whole mess had ever happened. Prosper had certainly had enough of the entire ordeal.

Once his information had been squared away and he had received his package of park balls, Prosper moved deeper into the city, walking somewhat cautiously as he did so. Xyla floated along at his side, and together they searched around, taking care not to back themselves into a corner or inadvertently end up in a possibly-dangerous situation. Prosper's experiences with the infected Pokemon had taught him to never underestimate them no matter what the situation.

Already, sounds of battle echoed across the streets. Screeches of pain and cries of fury reached Prosper's ears, raising goosebumps along his skin. It pained him to know that, for the most part, these were innocent Pokemon that had become infected and had suddenly transformed into bloodthirsty creatures that craved the pleasure of fresh blood and sundered flesh. Perhaps this catching contest was the only way to end this madness once and for all.

How do you think this will end up? Xyla questioned, throwing a glance up at the trainer. Prosper shrugged in response. "I don't know. I just hope that, once this is over, Pokerus will never show up around here again."

Despite the ugly reason they were here, the trainer inside Prosper couldn't help but be awed by the possibilities it had presented. Pokemon from all over Northern Opaddeka had flocked into Brightopolis, creating a diverse mixture of types and species that would most likely be never seen again. No doubt, the multitude of other trainers invited to the contest had realized this as well. It was literally the chance of a lifetime, to be able to encounter and catch the widest variety of Pokemon ever seen. Naturally, there were a select few that stuck out in the back of Prosper's mind he would certainly be keeping an eye out for.

The two turned a corner, and a greater expanse of Brightopolis stretched out before them. It was time to find out what this city had to offer them, and hopefully it was enough to land them a place in the winner's circle. If not, well, Prosper hoped to at least walk away with a coveted Pokemon or two. Let's just not repeat the Zangoose thing, Xyla said, chuckling, as they began walking.

Did someone say Zangoose?

None of the aforementioned mongoose pokemon were here, but, as you walked, Xyla would pick up an approaching mind that was decidedly...sinister. There were no shortage of twisted minds here; the survivors of this devastation were usually the ones with a particularly harsh personality to begin with. This one, however, was headed straight for you, and seemed downright sadistic, thirsting for the pain of others.

A Seviper slithered its way down the street, heading right for you and Xyla. The serpent moved with unnatural speed for the species, singlemindedly rocketing toward you with mouth open and fangs gleaming. Its body showed signs of previous wounds, cuts adorning its scales. It had survived more than one fight, it seemed.

The Seviper never got to you. A brown and cream blur leaped from one of alleyways and struck the snake, its head snapping painfully to one side with a crack that probably meant a broken jaw. It hit the ground and slid along the street, then raised its head weakly, for a moment, before fainting.

The attacker pulled back her fist, the stars around it fading, and then looked to you and grinned at the sight of more worthy combat. Once a peaceful inhabitant of the Halcyon Forest, a pokemon filled with joy and love of life, she had tasted power and found it sweet. Even with the trainers everywhere, no one had gotten her; she'd left a trail of broken, devasted opponents behind as she left her home to seek out the crowded cities. All in pursuit of fighting, of the violence that now gave her a thrill like nothing else.

The Seviper had been fleeing in fear, and this was what it hoped to escape. The Buneary cracked her knuckles and grinned madly, daring you to engage her in battle.

Before they knew it, the contest had begun. Prosper noticed the Seviper and took it in as it approached them from farther down the street, but never had he imagined it would be moving so quickly. Before he knew it, the saliva dripping from its gleaming fangs and the hungry look in its wide eyes were more noticeable than he would have liked. A flare of energy erupted about Xyla's frame as she prepared to retaliate, but it turned out that the attack wouldn't be necessary. Hardly another second had passed by before the snake was suddenly assaulted by a speedy, brown blur and fell to the concrete, apparently unconscious. It had happened too quickly for Prosper to see, but Xyla had watched carefully.

The two of them watched with a mix of bewilderment and sheer amazement as the Seviper's assailant grinned at her victory and suddenly turned towards them, grinning from floppy ear to ear with a devilish grin that normally didn't belong on a Pokemon of its type. Clearly, since the onslaught of Pokerus, this little Buneary had found its niche and quite clearly taken to its role as an accomplished fighter. To think that a little fur ball of its size had so easily done away with a Seviper meant that there was easily more to it than met the eye.

"D-did... you just see what that thing did?" Prosper stammered out, unable to tear his eyes away from the Buneary. Xyla shrugged her shoulders, feigning disappointment, though it was clear she was impressed. She was definitely raring to take the thing on, though it was pretty obvious she wouldn't be able to do it alone. "Get with Leaf, see what you guys can do," Prosper suggested, snatching the Meganium's Pokeball.

It took Xyla precious few moments to get together a string of attacks and run them by Leaf, but the Buneary was no doubt on the offensive at this point. The Xatu would start things off by firing off a quick Confuse Ray, halting the bunny in her tracks and easily setting the stage for her own strategy. She would then levitate into the air, waiting while Leaf created a focused but powerful Earthquake that would rocket down the middle of the street but also take care not to damage the buildings on either side. Following that, he would rush forth and deliver his stocky frame into a dizzying Body Slam, but only if it looked like the attack would be needed to further weaken the Buneary.

If, at the end of those attacks, the Buneary was still fighting strong, Xyla would blast her with a measured Psychic, attempting to whittle down what health remained while monitoring the bunny and ensuring she wouldn't be knocked out. Either way, following this, Prosper would launch a Park Ball, hopefully ensnaring his first capture of the contest.

Well, this was an interesting encounter to be had. One battle-crazy Buneary who wanted nothing more than to fight through some battles, and a trainer who was going to be scarred for life of Zangooses- WATCH OUT BEHIND YOU IT'S A ZANGOOSE.

Actually, it's just the wind, and then the ground shaking from the stomping Earthquake formed by the Meganium.

Xyla's multi-coloured bolt of energy zapped the poor Buneary right in the face, sending it spinning around in circles as it charged in to try and get its hands on Xyla, ready to take it into close-range combat, where it could pull some fancy moves. However, it wasn't going very far, seeing pretty lights - and then, hey, the ground was shaking! Buildings started to crumble just that little bit, for an attack like Earthquake simply could not be focused.

But the Buneary was now on the ground and struggling to get up. A good opportunity for a Park Ball, which was thrown, and sucked the Buneary up into its shell, turning it into blinding light. It shook once as the Buneary tried to refocus itself, twice as it tried to bang on the container, and then stopped once it realised the effort was futile - and then the ball vanished.

One captured Buneary.

"Sweet," Prosper said simply, watching as the ball suddenly fell still, the glow faded, and it shimmered seemingly out of existence. His first of hopefully many captures of the contest, and it hadn't been very difficult. Still, the Buneary had been extremely fierce, and he would have expected more of a fight out of the little thing. Was it wrong to look a gift horse in the mouth? Probably. Prosper was just so used to being dumped on by the cosmic forces that guided his life, he was expecting a round of trouble from the Buneary.

The thanks, of course, went to his two Pokemon. Xyla walked back with her usual, trademark smug plastered to her face. Leaf merely looked exhilarated, excited to be out and about and battling for the first in a long time. Of course, there would be plenty more opponents, as the city was absolutely crawling with vicious Pokemon out for blood. No doubt, another opportunity was waiting right around the corner.

"Not too bad, was it, guys?" Prosper questioned, giving them a glance before turning and scanning farther into the city. "It's nice to celebrate, but I think we need to keep moving. If we want a chance of placing, we gotta keep going and catch a bunch more. Let's go." With that, the trainer lead the way, as his two Pokemon followed behind.

As he walked, Prosper began thinking about the aspects of the city which would appeal to certain types of Pokemon. Part of Brightopolis did reach close to the ocean, establishing it somewhat as a port city. That, of course, would be the section of the metropolis where the water-types would congregate. The birds of prey would be flying high, calling the skyscrapers home and marking the wind as their territory. But, than again, those were easy. What really puzzled him was where types such as ground would tend to flock. Since he was searching for a Trapinch, it would be something he would have to find out if he hoped to succeed.

Perhaps you should just angle for the part of the city close to the desert, Xyla suggested casually, but in a monotone sort of voice, as if it should have been obvious. Prosper considered it for a moment, than nodded in indifference. It made as much sense as anything he had come up with. That is where the desert Pokemon would have entered the city, based on geography. Perhaps it did make the most sense to give that section a once-over. Deciding on this course of action, Prosper consulted a nearby map of the city and than set off down the nearest street, angling farther into the tangle of buildings as he made his way for the part of town facing Aridair Desert.

And so the group continued on, searching the city, doing the logical thing when looking for a desert-y pokemon, and heading for the area where the desert meets city. Good plan that. However, this involves being able to get there, of course, from where you are now.

The city is just crawling with infested pokemon, trainers and what have you, after all. Still, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot that comes after you, as you head, looking for the elusive ground pokemon. There had to be at least ONE in the city by now, right? Right?

Probably, but as you all continue with the hunting, there is a slowly growing feeling of being watched. It only grows stronger as you continue on, and one can almost hear the theme of Jaws starting up as everyone walks.

There's something out there, out for blood, hating the world, and ready to murder whatever it comes across...and it now seemed to be stalking Prosper. Just when the suspense was getting a bit much...OMGIT'SBACK!

Snarl. A blur of blue and white fur whizzes out of one of the nearby buildings, bouncing to the ground and baring a set of wicked fangs as it growls. "Pachi..."

Prosper suddenly stopped, that nagging feeling suddenly creeping over him, tickling the back of his neck. He took a few glances around, noticed nothing, and stepped forward a bit. Nothing. So why did he have this feeling? A familiar, high-pitched snarl rang out from somewhere in the distance, and suddenly a flood of memories came rushing back. A tiny, blue-and-white squirrel, foaming at the mouth, its eyes bloodshot and wild... no. It couldn't be. There was absolutely no way.

And yet, there it stood. Prosper jumped a good few feet in the air when he saw the thing. It had rushed from a nearby alley, and stood there in all its drunken glory. The Pachirisu. That same one, infested with rabies, that he had run into so long ago in the farmlands. How was this possible?! No way it had ended up in Brightopolis by chance. That thing had been driven here by Arceus himself, sent to torture Prosper into absolutely insanity. There was no other possibility.

"D-Destroy it!" Prosper cried, stepping back and pointing dramatically at the critter. Normally, such a little bugger wouldn't scare him out of his wits, but he had seen what this thing could do. Its former capabilities, coupled with the effects of Pokerus? It was a surprise the thing hadn't torn him in half yet. No doubt, the crazy little creature was dangerous.

Leaf took a few steps up, shooting Prosper a curious glance before sizing up the Pachirisu. It certainly didn't look very impressing; rather twitchy, yes, but still pretty tiny. Xyla floated up behind the Meganium, giving the electric squirrel a furtive glance before turning her attention to her partner.

Don't underestimate it, she warned, rounding her gaze back on the manic Pokemon. The squirrel's mind was hazy and scatter-brained, but somehow, a clear purpose still shone through: it was ready to fight. The smart thing to do would be to finish it off quickly and decisively before it had a chance to retaliate. Floating up into the air, Xyla made sure she was out of the way of Leaf's next move. Prosper, meanwhile, readied a park ball. As much as he loathed to take ownership of the Pachirisu, this was a contest, after all.

Goodness knows what the gods of fate and irony were thinking, at this point, probably laughing over a stiff drink as they toasted the show. But, then again...that squirrel had randomly died at the hands of a mere pidgeybird, hadn't it? How could this be the same one?

Still, it looked no different from the crazed creature you'd met ages ago, even to the fact that it had some rather damaged teeth. Either some random pokegod had plucked it out of time to put here expressly to torment this particular trainer, or perhaps, all things considered, Electric versus Flying usually didn't end well for the flier, and goodness knows what happens offscreen.

Either that, or this was some sort of twisted coincidence. It disappeared in a blur of fur, slamming into Leaf's leg with a fair bit of force, sparking madly, causing the grass pokemon to stagger a bit as the knee buckled. Still, this didn't deter her as she made the ground start to rock and roll, kicking the psychotic little rodent away from her foot as she did so, and sending it tumbling about on the pavement with the equivalent of squirlley curses. Xyla then diddled in the little beast's mind, reading little beyond a diseased bloodlust at the moment.

Hopefully the cure would fix up everything that was wrong with this beast, really. Even as he righted himself, he was knocked upside the head with the park ball, and sucked inside. Tense moments passed as the ball rattled for a bit, went still. The light didn't come on, however, as it sat there, then rattled again, a bit more violently, and went still again.

Was it caught? Or would it break out and cause more mayhem? The ball set to once more, tumbling down the cracked pavement as it shuddered like the dying throes of some wounded animal, then finally stilled a third time.

And the light clicked on.

The little thing was faster than it let on; Leaf snarled as it suddenly burst forward and grazed his frame with its buzzing electricity, causing him to lose his balance. Retaliating, he went ahead with the Earthquake, hurling the thing away from him and releasing the shock of seismic energy that threw the Pachirisu farther away as the pavement was completely rent through. Xyla, in an effort to cement the damage and ensure the demented creature wouldn't be coming back, tore through its mind and attacked mercilessly with a vicious bout of psychic energy. The assault was tougher than she'd envisioned; an overwhelming amount of bloodlust buzzed incessantly in the Pokemon's thoughts.

The ball was right on target, landing with a smack and sucking the Pachirisu into its interior. A few breathless moments later, and it fell still, the light gradually fading away. Prosper took a few steps forward and jogged the remained of the distance, bending over to inspect the sphere and confirm the Pokemon had actually been caught. This doubt was cleared up when a silver light suddenly claimed the device, glowing momentarily before finally shimmering away as it was transported to storage.

"Well, that was relatively painless," Prosper stated plainly, glancing away from the spot the ball had previously occupied and meeting Xyla's gaze. The psychic cocked her head, assuming a questioning gaze.

You thought otherwise? She asked, trying to sound genuinely curious. Of course, she remembered what had happened before. But it amused her to dredge up the memories.

Prosper frowned, recognizing that tone. Of course, she was messing with him. Waving her off, he turned abruptly and began stalking down the street once more, making a beeline for the city district farther along and closer to the desert. Grinning, Xyla took one last glance at the churned and broken-up concrete that had formerly been a street before walking after Prosper. Rather confused by the exchange that had just occurred, Leaf heaved a sigh and picked his way carefully across the mess he had just created as he tried to keep up with the others. Trying to understand the odd relationship between Prosper and Xyla always led to a major headache.

Goodness knows what will come of things when that critter is freed once more. It has twice now tried to kill Prosper...would it succeed if he ever came across it a third time?

Eh, who cares. It's gone again right now, and people were searching the city for a ant lion thingy that becomes a dragon-fly. Pretty cool critters, that. And eventually, Prosper even spots that which he's hoping for...but its not alone. Two pokemon, both desert dwellers normally, are sitting in a staring contest of sorts, as if debating what to do now. They don't seem hostile to each other...more the opposite, if anything. They hadn't done anything quite yet, one didn't think...but you never knew.

Still, it was a trapinch there.

Thanks for all the mods, by the way. You are officially my hero.

Attempting to understand the mechanics behind the Pachirisu was much too cosmic for Prosper's understanding. It was probably better left unknown how, despite being eaten alive, it somehow managed to end up in the city. No doubt, it would run into Prosper once again another few months down the road, on and on until it eventually lucked out and managed to eat his face clean off. Only then would the torment finally end.

Oh, look. The searching has finally paid off! Prosper stopped short as soon as he noticed the pretty brown and orange color of the Trapinch that gleamed so beautifully in the sunlight. Oddly enough, another Pokemon was also present: a Phanpy. While having no strict interest in the creature, Prosper was nevertheless thankful for its presence. Killing two birds with one stone was always okay in his book.

The two looked rather taken with each other, as they merely sat and traded stares while Prosper watched. It was difficult to glean anything from their facial expressions; they could be about to get it on or be at each other's throats for all it was apparent to the trainer. Either way, Prosper decided that he simply must interrupt. The Trapinch would most certainly have to belong to him, and it wouldn't hurt to catch the little elephant Pokemon just to add to team he had already gathered for the contest.

"Get on it, you two. But try to be somewhat gentle, alright?"

Haha, right. Leaf nodded his head, somewhat doubtful, while Xyla merely snickered at the suggestion. Despite the improbability of the idea, the two Pokemon crept forward, watching the two desert Pokemon for any sign that they had been seen. So far, so good. Then, all hell broke loose. An array of razor-sharp leaves burst from Leaf's plumage, scissoring through the air along their path of destruction. Xyla's eyes glowed violet as her trademark Psychic flared, washing over the Phanpy's mind and attempting to overpower it. Two more techniques would most likely follow these, but the ground-types were sure to have snapped to attention at that point and would be ready to fight back.

.3 Eh, no problem. I have time to kill sometimes.

The two lovebirds (or whatever), had their union and staring contest and contemplation rather rudely interrupted by a psychic bird and a flower dinosaur, and let known their irritation at such with gnashing of teeth and trumpeting and the like.

The trapinch faded out of sight abruptly, reappearing even as Leaf was launching the homing leaves of death, and...kind of bounced off a bit. The leaves, as we mentioned, are homing leaves of death, and as such, even though they were fired in totally the wrong direction, they do horrible things to this little critter, who is rather glad when the ball sucks her up, so that they don't keep abusing her.

As for the phanpy...well...he trumpets in a sort of fury as his prospective partner is captured, and charges, only to get mentally raped by the bird. However, infuriated as he is, he breaks right back out of the ball that tries to catch him and charges at Leaf, blaming the meganium for the disappearance of the trapinch and plowing into her side as well, flailing about wildly.

Well...that hurt. You can have Xyla kill it with the prepped Ominous Wind, or you can try to catch it again. I'll let you make that call. Cuz she will kill it with the Ominous Wind.

Leaf gasped as the Trapinch suddenly disappeared, avoiding his barrage as it zipped through open air and flew off in the wrong direction. Luckily, even as the little critter reappeared, the razored leaves locked on and began to turn around, slicing through its frame and landing right on target. Grinning, the Meganium cantered forward a bit, watching as the thrown park ball sailed straight into the digger's scarred body, sucking it in and promptly falling to the ground and beginning to shake. Soon enough, it fell still, and disappeared in a wash of silver light. Score!

Unfortunately, it's elephant companion wasn't going to make this nearly as easy. Despite the overwhelming effects of Xyla's technique, it still managed to break free of its Pokeball and seek revenge for both the Trapinch's and its own fate. The little thing was much faster than it appeared, and Leaf barely managed to break into a running trot before he was slammed in the side by the balled-up Pokemon, knocking the wind clear from his lungs. It was clear the little guy was angry.

Despite running on pure adrenaline, it was clear the Phanpy had lost much of its steam, and was most likely going to be very susceptible to capture once its thirst for revenge had been worn down a bit. Prosper fished another park ball from his pack while motioning to Xyla and pointing at the tiny elephant. "Confuse it!" He yelled, informing her of the plan. Confusing the Pokemon's brain functions would likely wear it down enough for the ball's machinery to finally take hold.

Meanwhile, Leaf merely tried to avoid being hit again, as he took in the beating sun's energy and dispersed it to his worn limbs, hoping to gain some steam back.

So Leaf concentrates on absorbing the local sunlight and feeling better, while Xyla strobes the little elephant. The ground type, in return, squeals and charges the maddening lights, right into a wall. He staggers back, momentarily stunned from the impact, and managed half of another angry squeal as he's enveloped in another ball.

One energy conversion later, the green-and-yellow orb clatters to the pavement and rattles, stills, shakes again, and stills a second time...then pings on and vanishes off to wherever they're being sent.

Excellent. Prosper opened his palm, grasping the now-still park ball momentarily in his hand until it too began to shimmer and fade seemingly out of existence. Even if placing in the contest didn't quite pan out as well as Prosper would have liked, his mission and determination in the event had been fulfilled. A great selection of Pokemon had been caught, and from what is sounded like, every participant would be allowed to keep at least one of their captures. That in mind, Prosper knew that he would be happy leaving even without a trophy.

"Feeling better, Leaf?"

Prosper questioned, turning around and throwing a glance at the grass type. Leaf had had his neck turned up toward the sun, enjoying its powerful rays as they beat down on his skin. Opening an eye, Leaf looked back down and returned Prosper's gaze, answering with a nod. Nothing made him feel as great as a few seconds of sunbathing, especially when the sky was so clear and bright.

Just a bit of time left, Xyla chimed in, reminding everyone of the time limit still ticking down to the end of the contest. Prosper quirked an eyebrow, wondering momentarily what she meant, than gave a start upon the realization. All the time they were standing around, wasting the day away, a clock continued to chime, counting the minutes until everything would be finished up. Though it might have been more ideal to extend the contest until the majority of the Pokemon were caught, a limit nevertheless existed.

"We'd better get going, then. Might as well go for the gold." Taking another quick glance around the area, Prosper set off in a random direction that he guessed would lead farther into the city. His purpose in coming to Brightopolis had been fulfilled, so wandering about aimlessly didn't sound too far-fetched at this point. Still, it was always good to at least have a direction to head in, and while he was in the city, he might as well make the most of it. A few more Pokemon still lay unchecked on his list, and it was possible they were roaming around somewhere in the city. One in particular would be likely to dwell in the same district as the Trapinch.

The desert sun. It beat against the side of the city, making it nearly ten degrees worse than the rest of the city. Unlike the swarms of other pokemon who were drawn to Brightopolis like flies on rotting fruit, she remained in the desert, alone. No instinct drove her to seek and follow the mobs, no instinct told her she should be there, but she realized that she felt this air of annoyance around her.

Nagging questions all around her wondered why no other pokemon was around, why they had gone to the city, and why they had left her behind. She was lonely, true, but she was always alone. From the moment she was born, she was destined to be alone, and this time was no different. But this nagging anger. She questioned it and wanted to know its reason for being.

Hormones - a viable explanation, but she had already stabilized in terms of bodily balance. The only other possibility was that she was sick. However, she had no fever, no runny nose, and her coat was smooth as ever. Looking up at the sun, though, it felt as if she was on fire. Looking about, she shook her head, entering into the city where so many other pokemon had gone.

She was not sure why she had come to the city, but she jumped the bandwagon eventually. It seemed deserted like her own home, sans sand. This city, where the shadows fell across the floor because the sun refused to illuminate its darkened crevices, was cold. Missing the desert intensity, realizing her mixed emotions, she threw her head to the side, silently scorning herself.

Footsteps left clear imprints in her thoughts and she looked up. A figure approached from the side and with each echo, she felt her unrestrained anger rising. Raising her arm, a weapon was held with a clear and vicious threat backing it up. As the figure rounded the corner, her arm flung her weapon and it spun with the rapidity that only an expert could produce - but it missed, a crystalline idea that she was indeed ill.

Her attack may have started the figure, now identified as being human, but she was not satisfied with her miss. Catching the bone club with one arm, she thrust it towards the human, pointing at him. Narrowing her eyes behind her skull mask, she decided that if she smashed this person's face in, she might feel better and be alleviated of all these terrible feelings. This sickness.

I really liked that. <3 Thumbs up.

Xyla sensed it before anyone else. She had recognized the signature of a Pokemon in the vicinity, but nothing about it warned her that it would suddenly become hostile. Than, suddenly, the swish of a weapon through the air; the vibrations of its velocity reached her, and she felt the intensity of the fury radiating from its source. She barely managed to think the first syllable of a warning before the club suddenly rocketed by, just inches away from completely taking Prosper out. The trainer froze and leaped back, a late response to the failed attempt.

It was coming back around, but the bone returned harmlessly to its owner's palm. Prosper followed its course and for the first time noticed the Cubone standing in the dimming light of the sun, almost swallowed by the shadows. Its eyes were black and lifeless, but a burning fire raged in the recesses, as if a kindling fury had suddenly flared. Its physical appearance was hollow at best, obviously ravaged by the effects of Pokerus. Until that moment, Prosper had never really thought of the condition as such a sickening disease. It truly took its toll on these poor creatures.

What might have been pity for a declining Pokemon suddenly became an instinct for self-defense. The Cubone had made the first move by attacking, even if it was a faulty attempt. Prosper felt sorry for the thing, but attempting to show compassion meant very little in the face of such a hardened determination. Obviously, a few wires had been crossed somewhere, and this desert-dweller had decided to unleash its problems back on the closest living things: Prosper and his group. What else was there to do but fight back?

"Go ahead and take it, Leaf," Prosper murmured, almost reluctantly, indicating the Cubone, "Understand, though, that it's sick."

The Meganium glanced at his trainer, processing the words and detecting the boy's heavy tone. It was obvious that Prosper had hesitated, and Leaf knew why. Still, it was hard for the Pokemon to agree. Things had almost always been black and white for him; this gray area in between was something new. The Cubone had moved first and attacked, so the instinct for retaliation was innate. Still, something about its appearance caused him, for just a fraction of a second, to doubt his actions. Behind the cold fury of the creature was a loneliness, a thirst for answers.

Breaking into a charge, Leaf swished his upper frame, dislodging a plume of glittering leaves that raced ahead of him, searching for a target. At the same time, he once again began to draw in the sun's energy, as dim as it may have been, and distributing it to his sore muscles. As had become something of the norm, Prosper took hold of another empty park ball, ready to let it fly. Something about the situation caused him to doubt its effectiveness, now; it didn't look as if this Cubone would give in so easily.

The brown pokemon growled low, bone tapping on the ground as soon as the giant came after her. Leaves of all the hues in the world, some the ground type had never seen, chased after her. All these rainbows that circled the leaves made the cubone sick with anger, disgust, but most of fear. She had seen few bushes or leaved things in her life, but whenever she had gone close, they had inflicted her with hurt like no other thing in her life.

She couldn't go down like this! The cubone solidified her stance, right foot in the lead, holding her bone before her in an attempt to block. Fleeing was futile and she knew that it would only leave her open for an attack. Lowering her head, she tilted her bone mask forward, eyes locked with the flowing body of leaves. This was it, somehow, deep down, she knew it was her final stand.

Growling, she felt the short fur on her back raise in vicious threat. She grappled forward, bone as her ram, she cut clean through the leaves, but sharpened blades blazed across her shoulders and cut deep gouges in her mask, leaving strikes in her bone club. I can stand this, she thought, each moment leaving gashes in her body, eyes closed. She would withstand.

Once the barrage disappeared, she opened her eyes. She was still standing. She was a God of her kind, she felt, but it was not long lived, not at all. A parkball struck her still in the head, and it rolled some ways. Until... What?

Prosper watched solemnly as the Cubone put up her brave attempt, wielding her club resolutely and facing the attack head-on. It was a brave thing to do, and he commended her for it, no matter the outcome. Some might think it foolish, facing up against a technique that was so obviously designed to play on her weaknesses, but Prosper looked past those aspects and saw the creature for who she was inside; something of a loner, yes, but also a Pokemon who stood for herself and refused to give in to what loomed over her.

Much like Leaf had hesitated, Prosper too struggled against a conscience that argued with his own desire. This Cubone was a free spirit, and she deserved to find her answers and return to what semblance of a life still remained. But if he honestly listened to these moralistic ideas, the entire idea of becoming a trainer would be out of his reach. It was necessary to sometimes make sacrifices in order to move ahead. Of course, Prosper knew he was only making excuses. If he was honestly as idealistic as he truly believed, he would have dropped this contest entirely and walked away empty-handed.

No, he was no such perfect person. Heaving a sigh, losing to his own ambition, Prosper flicked his wrist and released the sphere, watching dimly as it crossed the expanse of air and smashed into the Cubone's hardened skull, sucking her deep inside. One, two, three... the shaking ceased, and it fell still and silent. Like the others, it was claimed by the digital light, fading away into cyberspace as it was transported to the storage unit.

Xyla watched the encounter, then glanced up at Prosper as he stood frozen a second or two. Finally, shaking away the burden, he cracked a smile and began walking. "Let's keep going!" He yelled, the false cheer in his own voice even evident to his own observation. Xyla had no sarcastic comment; she could see easily enough how the battle had affected him. Why this particular exchange was so different from the rest, she had no idea. Perhaps the concept surrounding his chosen destiny had finally dawned on him, leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.

C'mon, Leaf, she murmured in his mind, beginning to walk in the wake of Prosper's trail. The Meganium stood for a moment, watching the trainer move farther ahead. An unspoken bond had developed between the two, and it was clear enough when something troubling was on the boy's mind. This, however, didn't seem like something he would be willing to discuss. Bowing his head, the flowered Pokemon followed after, making a mental note to discover what exactly had been the catalyst in this onslaught of grief.
