To Catch A Monster; Tethis' venture into the contest!

While on his journey down to the city of Mayriver, Tethis had heard of this strange virus that was afflicting this land. While he was aware of the power of biological warfare, this virus, this... PokéRUS appeared not to be damaging any known enemy to this land, but rather the wildlife of this so-called Opaddeka Region, as he had heard many of the young children call it. They became angrier, more enraged - there were even rumours of powerful mutations. And now he had been entrusted with the duty of rounding up those infected creatures, at the behest of some... what was he, some kind of local warlord? This whole event made very little sense to Tethis, who would have far preferred to simply exterminate the infected beings and leave it at that. Instead, he would participate as the rest of the humans did.

The things he did for this world. They were numerous and ridiculous in nature.

Once he had reached the city, Tethis had registered for this so-called 'catching contest', willing to see what kinds of things that this city had to offer him. Already he knew there were all kinds fo wild and powerful beasts, and he was careful to avoid them so as to prevent his two allies from getting into a fight. Helios and Melodi would be the key exponents in the upcoming attempts to capture these creatures in the devices the man he had registered his efforts with had given him. That was, perhaps the best thing about this contest - his efforts were being supplied. Like any good government, they were supplying their warriors with the tools they needed to complete their duty.

His goal, originally, had been to travel to the sea to find some sea monsters to add to his crew of warriors. Perhaps he could locate some of those sea monsters now, at the docks that the man had told him about. The problem was, he had no implements that he could use to capture these aquatic creatures that he wished to find. As Tethis made his way down to those docks, his mind raced with ideas that would allow him to get his hands on whatever it was lurking in the depths of this world's seas. there weren't seas where he came from, after all, and while water was not foreign, fishing as a concept was.

When he came across the fishing shop established by the docks, he was puzzled as to what the building's purpose was, and he walked in, a curious look on his face. Fifteen minutes later, he walked out of the building holding a large box of supplies, a large pole with some kind of cord attached, and with his pockets considerably lighter. The worst part was? He had to return them at the end of this contest!

This concept, as the storekeeper had explained to him, was known as fishing, in which one used 'bait' on the end of a 'line' on a 'fishing rod' to catch the creatures that lived underwater. There were also 'lures' that one could use, as well as some other necessary items like 'hooks' and 'sinkers' that were all included in this box that could open up to reveal the tools. War was a messy thing, with weapons and shields and armour, but this was an intricate affair indeed, beyond anything Tethis was used to! By the heavens. He was going to be here for a while. Fortunately, the man in the fishing shop had done everything but put bait on his fishing rod for him.

Taking his seat on the edge of the dock, fishing set next to him, Tethis released both his Pokémon - first, Helios the Beedrill and then Melodi the Shinx. They remained quiet, wondering what the hell this crazy guy was up to this time. He was usually up to something crazy, and yes, he was definitely doing something crazy. Once they saw him cast the end of his line into the water, they knew he was searching for Water-types in... well, it was the normal way to do it, but did he even have any idea how to do it?

"So I put the end in the water and... where are my sea monsters?"

Someone had forgotten to mention that fishing required the virtue of patience to Tethis.

So he sat. And he waited. And as time passed, with nothing coming to tug on the line, he grew increasingly frustrated with the entire concept. He was not used to sitting and waiting for something to come along to fight, more used to the enemy being present on the other side. All the searching he'd had to do for the Nincada in his care, who was currently resting, was crazy enough. This was just plain insane!

It had been fifteen minutes already. Nothing - not even a nibble - had come to grace Tethis' fishing line. And that was difficult enough as it was, for the hyperactive warrior had considerable trouble sitting still in one place for any length of time. This was certainly not his strong point.

Nothing. Not a single monster.

This is a pointless waste of my time! Is there no way of doing this more directly?!

But he waited, because there was no other way that he could see that would bring him what he wanted. Five minutes passed. Then another five, and then yet another ten minutes. And not a single thing was tugging on his line, finger taut across it, waiting and hoping for something to come up and attack the lure that he'd left on the line. He was told that this would work, but that man had lied to him! This was a travesty! An outrage! There was nothing that was coming to him, falling into the trap that he was lying in wait for them! They were supposed to come!

"Curse this to the nine Hells!"

Furious, the heavenly hero threw his fishing line in the water, screaming with suppressed rage as he did so. The rod hit the water with a muted splash, and the assembled humans on the dock would undoubtedly turn and stare at what was undoubtedly a breach in their vaunted fishing etiquette. Helios, feeling... almost sorry for his trainer, buzzed his way over the water to scoop the line out with his massive stinger, hooking the line behind it and dropping it back on the wharf for his angry Trainer to pick up. Silently, Tethis thanked Helios. Venting that little bit of rage was a good thing for him to have gotten out of his system.

Tethis picked up his fishing rod and was preparing to throw it into the water-

"You must have patience, young hero!"

Tethis was startled by the addition of this voice to his surroundings. So startled, in fact, he jumped up - jumped up and off the wharf, landing face-first in the water, rod still in his hand. Gasping for air, Tethis surfaced quickly, to stare up into the eyes of the old man who had first greeted him in Escennia, teaching him the very basics of how to become a trainer of these creatures. Melodi was shaking her head in disapproval. He really was an idiot sometimes.

"Why must I have patience in this... infested city?" Tethis shot back, his anger clearly still his better.

"If you wish to locate the sea monsters, you must have patience. They are elusive beasts."

Tethis sighed. The old man was right. He wanted to add the sea monsters to his warhost, and he could not stop until they were there. Otherwise, he would be a loser, and losing was not an acceptable option in Tethis' world. Slowly, he climbed his way back up one the ballast poles after throwing his fishing rod back up, reaching the top of the dock once more. He sat with his legs over the edge, soaking wet and dripping from his tenure in the water, but... intent. The old man was right. The fire burned in his eyes once more, the fire he had back in Escennia when he first laid eyes on Helios.

The line was re-baited, the lure changed, and once more cast out into the ocean, this time with a purpose. He had to find the sea monsters.

PokeRUS had taken its toll on everything, even the oceans. Fighting, fishing and catching had all but wiped out all the monsters that made their homes in the sea, but the rest were said to now be swarming the docks or, in the case of those with the mobility, crawling onto the land and joining the land-band wilds in the city, though they were always close to the water.

Can it be safe to say that all the pokemon stupid enough to be fooled by a lure were long since gone? Still, sometimes intelligence had no factor in the matter. Pokemon who tempted fate with humans and their hooks did so for many reasons. Sometimes they were so hungry it clouded their common sense, and yet more were cocky, believing themselves capable of escaping the trap or even winning the fight that no doubt awaited them.

If there was one thing that PokeRUS did, it was make pokemon cocky, and, if there was one thing these conditions did, it made them hungry. It was only a matter of time before one came along to the hook. The problem was the waiting. Every once and a while, there would be a sign of a shadow in the depths swimming past, but they never stopped, and vanished just as quickly as they appeared.

Then the much-awaited happened. There was a tug on the line, a shifting in the waters as something found itself ensared on the hook. Then the line when slack again, but that was only a moment before something broke the surface in a great, flying leap. A beautiful blue fish twisted and twirled mid-air, sunlight sparkling of its scales, and the fishing line followed, attached to its mouth.

The fish vanished into the ocean again, water splashing up onto the docks as it reentered, but the fishing line prevented escape. The rod jerked this way and that as the fish thrashed, trying, in vain, to free itself. However, one may notice clouds forming above as the fish fought the line, and someone may also notice a tattered-looking blue fin surfacing, followed by a brown, equally-tattered face. The other aquatic creature quickly dove back down into the depths, an observer for the time being.

Patience was a virtue, and a sea monster had come, though it was out of reach and there were more immediate things to fight. Not to mention that the weather had quickly turned sour, raindrops beginning to fall and they were rapidly turning into a downpour.

The patience paid off. There was something tugging, pulling - he could finally feel something attached to the line that he was so strangely unaccustomed to! This sport of humans was a different thing entirely to what he could do, but by no means was it an idle activity now. There was a result. There was a hope, a flickering light in the darkness that was the power of the sea.

And he, Tethis Skyheart, could grab on to that with both hands and lift it towards the mighty heavens! How did the heavens respond to that call? The answer was simple – by summoning rain. Rain, the bringer of life-giving waters and the rise of the power that flowed through almost all life forms. It was a beautiful thing. Tethis, already wet, was not one to mind being more wet. He understood the significance of the rains and thanked the heavens for the gift it was bestowing on this forsaken, tainted world.

The old man, too, was happy with the things occurring. He could see Tethis. The hero was trying his best to obtain the powerful creatures that he wished to have, and that was a difficult challenge indeed. As the Finneon raised itself from the water, eclipsing the sun and glimmering as the droplets fell from its scales, the old man could not help but stare in wonder at the beauty of the sight.

It was not, however, what either of them were looking for.

”That is a Finneon, young hero. It is potentially worthy, but look in its eyes. It does not have the quality you require, if my eyes do not deceive me.”

Back and forth did Tethis fight the Finneon, struggling to control the line as it thrashed to and fro. There was much to be done about it, but the simple solution was easy enough for the powerful young man that knew the arts of war like no other. He could fight this thing to the end, or he could flow with the tides of the battle and have it wear itself out as it tried to fight while he provided minimal resistance. A precept of battle – one should let opponents wear themselves out, and then strike when they were weak.

The old man, in the meantime, noticed something under the water. There was still motion, beyond the battle of the Finneon and the heavenly hero. Something else lurked with the group, trying to observe the goings-on before getting involved. What the old man could see bespoke a Pokémon who had seen much battle and come out of it either on top or just worse for wear. It was still alive, meaning it had done something right… but it was… well.

It was a sea monster. Exactly what Tethis needed.

Tethis watched the Finneon, trying to relax his arms to prevent putting up a mighty struggle. Flow with the situation – be like the water about the rock, not the sword against the steel. It was a necessity. The aquatic creature jumped once more, and Tethis yanked hard on the line, if only to pull the little butterfly-tailed fish mid-air onto the wharf… and remove it from the line, casting it back into the seas.

He didn’t want that. It, as the old man said, did not have the fire in its eyes that Tethis wanted to see. He wanted a real sea monster, not this… abomination of a creature, some vague attempt to be ‘cute’ to attract some idiotic human that was likely too wrapped up in appearances to care about the true strength of warriors. This thing would not serve him.

”You are right. What… what do I need to do?” Tethis asked, knowing that this old man had helped him every step of the way thus far. Surely he would help him just a little more until he could stand on his own two feet in this strange world. Soon, Tethis reckoned. It would need to be soon.

”Cast your line. Have patience. And most of all, have faith, young hero! Your sea monster will come. Sooner than you expect, if you are true to your beliefs.”

Tethis nodded. This was a strange way for someone to live, and he would have no part of it. Perhaps temporarily, if he needed to do something along these lines once more. If he could make things work for him now… if he could reign victorious over this, he could find what he wanted. Patience, however, was not a virtue he was gifted with. If anything, this was a battle to master himself over anything.

The line was re-baited, as the Finneon had eaten it whole. The lure was checked that it was still on snugly, and Tethis cast the line over his shoulder once more, falling into the depths with a solid plunk. And now… he had to wait.

”Good… good. You must be patient. Sea monsters are not easy beasts to catch.”

The old man spoke the truth. He always did. This man had never let Tethis down once so far – he had given him a monster, he had given him items and directions to where he needed to be. There was always this man who would help him light the path to victory. Would it be the same here?

Tethis took his seat on the wharf once more, legs dangling over the edge as he shut his eyes, kept his finger taut on the fishing line to feel for twitching, and exhaled in a long, slow motion. He needed to keep his mind clear and fresh, not focus on the passage of time, and instead think about the sea monster that he would get. What form would it take? Would it be large, powerful, with killer jaws and a mighty roar? Would it be like a sea snake, agile, quick and powerful? Would it simply be a massive fighter that could drown a city in a breath?

There were so many ideas running through Tethis’ head at that point he forgot to think about the fact he would be there. The old man nodded his approval, for the heavenly hero was doing exactly as he was meant to be doing. He was no longer trying to crush everything in his path.

Even if it was only a temporary improvement, it was still an improvement.

Patience. Patience, Tethis Skyheart.

You are the champion of the heavens. Now be the champion of yourself.

Would he find the sea monster? Would waiting, silently, with the help of the old man’s reassurances, prove to be a fruitful activity?

Tethis prayed so. With every fibre of his being. There were no more words he could speak, and with bated breath, he waited. A prayer was given to the heavens, a desperate, silent prayer... he needed this to happen more than anything else.

The Finneon you had caught and subsequently released swam away without fuss. Even in its infected state, it knew better than to pick a fight on land.

Back to fishing, then. For a time, nothing much happened. It was slightly cold, and raining, and generally unpleasant, even ignoring the PokéRUS epidemic. It was fortunate that no pokémon ventured from the city proper, where all the action and carnage was going on. There just wasn't much to prey upon out by the docks.

Just then, the rod twitched. And again. If you reeled in the line a bit, you would see a rather tatty-looking fish caught on the hook. It didn't look particularly threatening, but it was visibly angry. Must have been a combination of the virus and getting its mouth impaled on a fishing hook.

A seasoned fisherman or pokémon expert would know that the pokémon you had just snagged was both exceedingly rare, and ultimately harmless. For now. The old man accompanying you might be able to clue you in.

Aha! There was another creature stuck on the fishing line, and that would instantly mean a second chance at locating a sea monster for his team. That was always a boon. A second chance. What he wouldn’t have given for that second chance to find a powerful sea monster. Tethis knew very well that if he found the right creature… it could be devastating as an addition to his group.

He reeled it in just a little bit, to see the thing jump out of the water and show itself. This thing was… it looked tattered and broken. What exactly was this strange creature he had never seen before?

”Ah! You have hooked a Feebas, young hero. This is a rare Pokémon that… while it may not be strong now, it becomes a powerful fighter and a monster of the sea. Beautiful yet deadly. I recommend this one.”

The old man, ever-wise and able to help him. A beautiful yet deadly warrior, huh? Melodi huffed from beside Tethis. She was the beautiful one on the team! And this was a male, anyway! What male could be truly beautiful as she could be? No, he had to be lying, stupid old guy. But Tethis was a little more receptive to what he had to say.

”I see. Then… how will I capture it when it is in the sea and I am on land?” he asked quickly, unsure of how this was meant to go. He was smart, when he had to be. But this was an interesting scenario.

”Think, man of the heavens,” the old man began slowly, chuckling as old men do in situations that amused them, ”and use the tools available to you.”

The tools available to me?

The only tools he had were his Pokémon – oh, yes. They would do. They had techniques and tactics that would certainly help Tethis in his quest to obtain this sea monster. He knew that Melodi did well against the Water-type, but he did not want to do well, he simply wanted to injure a little – and thusly Helios was the way to go.

”Very well – I accept your challenge, monster of the sea! Helios, go! Do not knock it unconscious!”

The Beedrill buzzed, raising its poison stingers as Tethis took double-hand control of the line in order to maximise his usefulness to the Beedrill. Pulling on it, he could lift the Feebas onto the wharf where Helios had the best access to it, and they could enact the usual plan for taking on an opponent that they’d developed. It worked for them, they were content, and it would stay that way.

The Beedrill’s buzzing wings allowed it to hover, and the prerogative String Shot fired out from its mouth. This time, however, it wasn’t to tie up the Feebas, though that was certainly a beneficial side effect – it was instead to attach the fish to the fishing line so that it could not flee from the trainer and his beastly counterpart. If it could not escape, Tethis would have a far better chance of capturing this thing.

Now he just had to use his weakest move in order to injure this creature just a little. Yes, it could still be strong, but there was no matter for that. A little barb of poison fired from the Beedrill’s stinger, a poison sting that could infect the Feebas with a poison. That poison would weaken it, and a little jolt of pain would certainly help things along too.

Once all that was done, Tethis threw a Park Ball – it was time to try his hand at capturing one of these things. If the job was all done properly, he would have a new sea monster to call his own. One thing from this strange ‘contest’ they were holding was all he truly needed. The rain poured down around him, but his spirits soared – this was where he belonged, fighting monsters.

Feebas wasn't a pokémon known for its strength or combat abilities. In fact, the only redeeming feature it possessed in its current evolutionary state was an impressive agility in wet weather. Given that it was currently raining, Feebas easily held the speed advantage over Helios, and moved in swiftly to strike with a crushing blow...

Oh wait. It just used Splash. If you ended up catching this fish, you might want to exert some patience when training it.

The Beedrill was undeterred by Feebas' pathetic attempt at attacking, spraying some gunky string at it to keep it held to the fishing line. Following that, a barrage of poison barbs that struck true, but didn't do that much damage. Poison Sting was a fairly weak attack, after all.

Finally, the Park Ball's turn came around. Its Capture attack was accurate, sucking the fish inside. The secondary effect, actually resisting Feebas' efforts to escape, happily kicked in, and three wiggles and a ding later, you had a new pokémon. It went straight to the central registration PC, under your name.

...He had done it. He had caught a sea monster!

Tethis reached victoriously for the ball that contained it, ready to take it home with him, before... it vanished. It was gone in a flash of light, like something had stolen it from him! What was this travesty, this outrage?! Tethis roared, like the mighty lions, anger showing in his voice- calmed only by the old man's reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"You will be able to collect it later, young hero. If you are done here, you can speak to the managers of this contest and inform them that you have finished. They will take the remainder of your Park Balls, but you can wait around for people to finish their attempts, then obtain your Feebas."

Well, that made a little more sense, at least. Tethis nodded, and took the fishing gear up; he'd need to return that to the salesperson in the fishing shop, who merely looked quizically at Tethis. He hadn't expected his loan to be that short, but he'd paid for it and there were no refunds. Then, at least, he had one thing to take home with him, that wasn't some silly human prize.

He had what he wanted.

He could wait just a little while longer to get his hands on it and start teaching it to be a powerful ally of his team. He had plans. Big plans. And they would coalesce soon. Returning those Park Balls was a snap; Tethis was riding on the heavenly high.
