There was something quite elegant about the way this region dealt with widespread catastrophe. Zombie rage driving all pokémon into the city? No problem, just hold a catching contest! Apparently, this contest was a stop-gap measure until the PokéRUS vaccine was ready for mass distribution. Made sense, in a way. Not that Alex would have complained even if it didn't.

The tall trainer was in Brightopolis for the same reasons that everyone else was. Pokémon that were ordinarily rare and difficult to find were packed into the city, along with every other wild critter within a hundred miles. Combined with the sudden influx of trainers, it meant that Brightopolis was rather more crowded than usual. Again, Alex didn't mind too much, because he could easily see above the crowd line.

Upon registering for the impromptu contest, Alex had received custom contest pokéballs. Just like the Fishing Contest from way back. He'd actually managed to win that one, thanks to a combination of good fortune and a solid choice of companion pokémon. Dynamo was in his party again - the Manectric's paralysing attacks would be very useful when it came to capturing pokémon.

The rest of Alex's team had also been carefully selected from his extensive squad, all for their various capture-aiding techniques. Perched on his shoulder was a young Smeargle, who appeared far too young and underpowered for actual battle. But it was precisely because of the pup's low level that he would be such a force. Thanks to the attacks he had sketched for himself, Smeargle could cripple an opposing pokémon without actually fainting it, making any capture that much more likely.

Next up were Yin and Yang, the two pokémon that had evolved from a Nincada that Alex had trained. The Ninjask, Yin, was a proven battler. The combination of speed, power, and protective moves meant that any battle involving the flying bug was pretty much guaranteed to be short, allowing more time to search for pokémon. The Shedinja, Yang, was entirely different. Its unique ability to shield itself from a multitude of attack types meant that there were some pokémon out in the city that couldn't touch it at all. Battles were much less stressful when you knew that your pokémon couldn't be hurt. Against some pokémon, Yang provided completely risk-free battling. Both bugs were in their respective pokéballs for now, waiting to be called upon.

Fifth was Tox. The Crobat was a master of "soft status" - confusion, poison, flinching. His speed and stealth led to Alex taking the bat to search from the air, out of range of any stray attacks from the streets below. If Tox found any of the pokémon that Alex had briefed him on, the Crobat would alert his trainer to their location. The fact that he was also a capable battler didn't hurt, either.

Finally, hovering along at Alex's right hand side, was Guru. The Alakazam's primary job was as a ground searcher. He would constantly scan for the brain patterns of wild pokémon, pointing out the ones he thought Alex would be interested in battling. The psychic could also teleport Alex out of a tight spot if needed, or even go into battle himself. It wasn't like he was particularly weak in that area.

So what are we looking for in particular? Guru asked.

"The primary target's Scyther." Alex replied. "I've also heard rumours of Snorlax about. They're pretty hard to miss, but it's worth mentioning." From his research into pokémon habitats, there was a chance that Tangela could pop up, too. Tox had been briefed already, so while he searched from above, Alex and Guru made their way through the streets, eyes and mind peeled for anything of interest.

The city seemed quiet to you, and to Tox, as you made your way along, but Guru's mind would be nothing but buzzing with the thoughts of the mad pokemon. Anger, bloodlust, desperation, fear, all mashed together with the garbled thoughts of territory, vengance, and other such things that it took only one of the most powerful psychics to sort out. There was life all around, the city seeming to almost beat like a living heart.

But there was one thing that Guru could not detect, and it was making its way toward you with soft, padding steps, keeping to the shadows. She had been watching, waiting for the right human to stumble into her domain. You were it. Her twisted mind, veiled from Guru's prying mind's eye, saw herself the predator and you the helpless prey, her purple coat splattered with the blood from past victories.

And so she crept, silently, until she was sure you were so deeply in her domain that no one could hear you screaming for mercy. The only warning was a foul stench in the air moments before clouds of toxic, purple clouds rolled in. You were exempt from her attack due to luck, but Guru was not, and the poison from the attack made its home in his bloodstream as the clouds themselves parted and showed their creator.

The blood-coated Stunky grinned, bloodshot eyes glinting. Heeeeeeere, trainer.

Suddenly, action. As Alex wheeled around to face their attacker, Guru twitched in place, the poison gas already starting to affect him.

Damned dark types and their shenanigans.

Alex was in total agreement.

"You've got Miracle Eye, you wanna take it?"

Guru readied his spoons.

Little bugger's going down. Don't faint it, right?

"That's right. Let's try and catch it."

The psychic used his inner eye to get a lock on the Stunky's mind, then proceeded to lay waste to it with a Confusion attack. Not quite a full-power Confusion, though. A bit over half power, only enough to cripple it. Alex was ready to lob one of his supplied Park Balls as soon as the attack had landed. By his reckoning, Guru could probably stand one counterattack, but that was a scenario to avoid if at all possible.

The Stunky was very aware of the fact that the psychic was doing something to her, the clouds usually cloaking her mind from others parting, and she didn't like it. The predator was determined to spill blood, and let out a cry before lauching herself at Guru, he claws leaving a cut across the Alakazam's torso.

She had no time to admire her handiwork, however, before Guru invaded her thoughts with an attack that, to him, was very light, requiring effort to dampen. To her, it was torture, her venomous nature leaving her vulnerable and her darkness to longer cloaking her. The Stunky screamed in pain, throwing her head back as her legs gave out from under her.

Then, it was over, and she got to her feet again, baring her teeth and ready to slash him again, this time with her dark power behind it. No more playing with her prey.

She never got the chance, the Park Ball smacking her soundly in her short snout and then consuming her. She thrashed, sending the ball tumbling and bouncing. Her thoughts, now clear as bells to Guru were he listening, consisted of all the horrible ways she planned to torture human and Alakazam alike for this indignity and for the pain they'd caused her, along with a number of particularly foul names for the Alakazam in question.

Finally, however, it stopped, and sounds and thoughts alike grew silent. Perhaps now she would get some help and return to a less vicious state. She'd left her mark, though, and not only with her claws. Guru's stomach would twist and feel like it threatened to empty its contents as the poison worked its way through him, steadily sapping his strength. How irritating.

Once the pokéball's movements had ceased, Guru examined the sizeable wound across his midsection.

Damned dark types.

Alex nodded.

"I agree. Pity we can't do anything about the poison." Something to do with a 'no medicines' clause in the contest rules. Silly clause, but for some reason it was strictly enforced. "You okay with periodic Recovers?"

I should be. As long as I don't go up against something like that again. The Alakazam concentrated for a moment, and the bleeding from his gut stopped, the wound healing up nicely. The queasiness from the poison still remained, but Guru had lived through worse. He could easily ignore the worse side effects until he had to recover again.

Alex registered the Stunky to the contest, and had the ball transported away for storage. One down. From the chaos that surrounded him, he figured it wouldn't be too hard to find something else to battle and catch. Guru was at his side, Smeargle was still on his shoulder, and Tox was still doing that aerial search deal.

The contest was going reasonably well so far. No casualties at this stage was always a good thing.

With the skunk under lock and key, the scene was rather pleasant, considering the circumstances. You know... infected roided pokemon on the loose. One would expect them to be causing quite a commotion.

Just then, that's exactly what you received. A high-pitched shriek came from overhead. You didn't need Tox to know that something was headed your way... and something big. It didn't take long before the gigantic bird was in sight, and you were in his. He shrieked once again, calling two smaller birds out from behind the clouds.

A ginormous Fearow was now flanked on both sides by smaller Spearow. Unfortunately, they'd picked you out of the crowd, and were making their intentions rather clear.

Humans? Them's good eatin'!

When Tox saw the trio of virus-crazed birds heading towards Alex, he did the wise thing, and got out of harm's way. The trainer had already heard their approach, and was cooking up a quick plan of attack.

Dynamo was released almost immediately. Electric-type, birds... it was pretty easy to see where Alex intended to take this. The Manectric's first task was to do something about the pair of flanking Spearow. A couple of bursts of lightning, one at each little birdie, would probably eliminate the threat posed by them.

As for the Fearow, that was where Smeargle came in. The little painter had a number of moves that would help immensely against a much stronger opponent. First one was Protect - Smeargle would set up a temporary bubble of invulnerability that would give him time to let off his next attack. Said attack involved a jet of soporific spores, aimed straight for the Fearow's face. If all went well, then a sleeping Fearow would me much earier to deal with.

But then, when did things ever go exactly according to plan?

At least Alex understood that things wouldn't go to plan every time. That was a good attitude to have, because things were about to get hilarious.

But... at the same time, there was also another fault with the plan. Yes, the Protect was a good idea. An excellent idea, in fact; otherwise the little Smeargle was going to be in a world of hurt. The Fearow's beak glowed as it charged straight for the little creature, ramming into the blue energy that was protecting it from harm.

That same barrier protected it from the massive electrical discarge that lashed out over the field. The Manectric wasn't coming out of it unscathed, yes; the agile Spearow were striking it with beaks and things in a fast and furious fashion before the energy cascaded over the field, a discharge of electricity that basically shredded everything around.

The Fearow fell, and so did the Spearow. A second shot wasn't needed.

At least they all learned something from that experience.

Guru looked at the smoking, unconscious bodies of the birds, then twitched his moustache.

I think you overcooked it a bit. A pause, then, No pun intended.

Alex nodded thoughtfully.

"Probably. You guys okay?"

Smeargle happily returned to his shoulder perch, looking completely completely unscathed thanks to that Protect. Dynamo was a bit shakier - understandable after taking a bunch of savage pecks. Still, the pooch was healthy enough to give an affirmative bark.

Alex recalled Dynamo, and started looking around for the next fight. Via Guru, he was able to get status reports from Tox on anything that looked interesting or dangerous. The bat was hovering more or less above Alex, within easy reach in case he was called upon to battle.

A loud crash came from your right. Slowly a trash can rolled past you and your Pokemon companions. The question of where it came from was soon answered as a large pink tongue chased after it. It dragged the can back to it's alley, the owner of the tongue never having to reveal himself. Some more crashes resonated about the alley, seemed something big and hungry was back there munching on the trash.

Yet apparently whatever was in those trash cans wasn't nearly enough. So the owner of the pink tongue took his leave of the alley appearing before you in all his rotund pink glory. He took one look at you and your gaggle of Pokemon then shot his tongue toward you attempting to relieve you of your pack.

Alex whipped around in time to see the large tongue snake out in front of his party. He knew enough about pokémon to recognise a tongue that size. They weren't too common around these parts - useful for the purposes of the contest.

"Lickitung. Smeargle, get ready."

The artist pokémon jumped down onto the ground, paintbrush tail swaying from side to side in anticipation.

"Protect yourself, then Spore on my signal."

Smeargle nodded. The Lickitung waddled out from the alley, and apparently took a shine to Alex's backpack. That would not do at all. Good thing that said pack was firmly attached to the traienr's shoulders. As he ducked down, clasping his arms together to prevent any unwarranted removal, he gave the word.

"Now!"

Smeargle had already erected his shiny barrier of None Shall Pass, and right on cue he spat out some sleeping spores towards the opportunistic Lickitung. Get it to take a nap first, then worry about trying to catch the thing.

Alex then checked how many Park Balls he had. Lots. Might as well throw one, then.

There were all kinds of things to be said for a little baby Smeargle trying to take on a big, scary, strong Pokémon. Lots of things indeed. Naturally, a big Lickitung, being fat and weighed down by its ginormous tongue, was going to be easy pickings if something was quick enough. And by the sounds of things, the little Smeargle had that particular danger under control.

So its tongue bounced off the so-called barrier of None Shall Pass, and everything was good after the Smeargle's sketched Spore put the big tongue-wielding object to sleep.

Unfortunately, your Park Ball wasn't exactly effective. It just... bounced off the big sleeping whatsie. While that was good for you it was asleep, not catching it was bad. Now you have to weaken it somehow without waking up.

Have fun!

To recap the situation: Protect, good. Sleep, good. Failed pokéball, bad. Damned Lickitung and their resistance to capture. Making Alex go through his inventory like that.

Luckily, Alex had both the pokémon to load the Lickitung with extra statuses, and the balls to continue pelting it with. At the flick of a wrist, Dynamo made his second appearance of the contest. The pooch's instructions were to smack the pink snoozing thing with some paralysing 'leccy, because, hey, why stop the statuses at sleep?

At Alex's word, Smeargle pitched in with the weakening effort too, with an Endeavor that would take advantage of his shortcomings in the health department. After that, Alex would lob another Park Ball at this tongued critter. His chances would most likely be better this time.

Insanity: Doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result. Thankfully, this wasn't insanity.

Stacked statuses were a good idea, and in the mathematical and super-powered mind of Alex Chadwick, he was thinkging very logically. Almost as if this was a game, and he was thinking in the meta-game. A good idea, right? Yes, because being ahead of the game was good. Good good good.

So being, the Lickitung had a big bolt of lightning slap into it, and the neuron pathways int he Lickitung froze up. And then, to add insult to injury, its health was drained massively by a giant hurty attack - Endeavor. It was a good attack, and damn, that Lickitung was going to be crippled.

When it woke up.

Fortunately, the Park Ball this time worked. Inside it was now held a creature, asleep, unable to use its neuron pathways, but captured. It zapped off just like the rest of them, and hey, Alex had a Lickitung. Awesome stuff.

Hooray for the triwiggleding that signalled a successful capture, and hooray for Smeargle and Dynamo, whose efforts had ensured the smooth acquisition of the Lickitung that was now in the central registration office. Alex congratulated the two battlers, and recalled Dynamo. Smeargle went back to his shoulder perch.

This poison's starting to get annoying.

Guru had remained the quiet observer after that Stunky encounter. The queasiness was starting to return again, so the psychic steadied himself with another Recover. In a contest where items were prohibited, a self-healing move was very handy.

"It shouldn't be too much longer, Guru," Alex replied. "The contest should be over in a couple of hours."

Only a couple more hours of me constantly topping up my energy to stave off this deadly toxin that you can't cure because of some local bureaucracy? Wonderful.

Alex just shrugged sympathetically. Some of Guru's irritation was probably the PokéRUS talking.

It's the poison, not the PokéRUS. Guru insisted, looking almost convincing for a moment before his moustache dropped. Okay, some of it's the PokéRUS.

PokeRus or no, running around poisoned is never fun. Unless you're a poison type that's unaffected. And here just happens to be yet another poisonous fiend. The first sign of your next challenge came in the smell, a smell that was worse than a dead skunk, dirty gym socks and rotten eggs combined. If you weren't turning green from such a scent you've a stronger stomach than I.

Rounding the corner was one of the most avoided Pokemon in Poke history, a Gloom. And this Gloom wasn't none too pleased at all. As soon as she set eyes on you and your companions Gloom began to yammer angrily and the stench in the air grew stronger. The PokeRus seemed to be enhancing the order created by the Gloom. She glared at Guru having not had a decent fight all day, mostly because any Pokemon she'd come into contact with had fled and I don't blame them.

Ah, the smell of victory. All rustic and... wait, that wasn't what victory smelled like. Alex was sure that victory smelled, well, more pleasant. Or at least not as stomach-turning.

The Gloom that made itself known to the party was immediately ranked as a threat. Statuses were bad, and to be avoided if at all possible. Clearly, this was another job for Smeargle - the young painter pokémon definitely had a knack for this sort of thing, thanks to the attacks he knew.

"Go get 'em." Alex said to the scamp on his shoulder, and immediately Smeargle leapt into action. It was the same tactic that he'd employed against the Lickitung - protect against oncoming attacks, then ram some narcolepsy down the Gloom's throat until it took a nap.

That would be followed by a hopeful Park Ball. Alex still had more than enough.

The young smeargle threw his tail into the air, streaking a messily drawn shield into the air. The strange green paint dried quickly into a clear shield, which was soon met by the most caustic of substances. Fortunately, the acid couldn't burn through the shield, however, the smeargle had a good enough idea to send the gloom into a deep sleep. Waving his tail again in the air, slowly, the spore were painted as the ooze splattered the air on the invisible canvas.

Each green dot became yellow and soon, they flowed freely in the are, its scentless, tasteless spores soon engulfed the gloom, silently taking her into a sleep so deep, she plopped over, the drool from her mouth soon covering the ground as if she had up chucked, but luckily, no more scents were added to the acrid odor. Eyes closed, it was hard to tell if the plant was sleeping or faking, but when the telltale bubble-in-the-nose appeared, she was pronounced asleep.

Alex followed up with a pokeball, tossing it with ease, letting it roll off his hand, the parkball engulfed the sleeping gloom, causing the smell to dissipate quickly as the parkball began to rock about in the place where the gloom had been for a moment. The red dot never disappeared and the thrashing became so violent, the gloom, though still sleeping, broke free. Ugh, the smell returned and was it just me or did it get worse?

"I think I got it."

Alex's optimism was slightly mistimed, since the Park Ball split open again, and the ambient smell returned. His nose wrinkled.

"Nope, I was wrong."

At least the plant critter was asleep. That left Smeargle free to launch another attack, then.

"Smeargle, try an Endeavor."

The painter kid nodded, and did some more fancy tail swishing. This time, he mimicked a powerful empathy field, which was intended to completely eliminate the Gloom's health advantage. After that, Alex chucked another Park Ball at the grass-type. Eventually, one of them was bound to work. Law of averages and all that.

.2 (This will be crap, sorry...but trying to get people another mod or two, particularly the ones in the middle of stuff now that I'm back.)

Endeavour. The core mechanic of the FEAR Rattata...a way to totally change the tide of a battle...and really destroy the opponent's hit points.

And so it was, and so the Gloom was brought to the young pokemon's level of health, painfully...yet continued to sleep on.

Despite all of this, the pokeball STILL failed.

Glooms suck, apparently. On top of being horribly smelly.

Sigh. That was not a lucky throw. At least Gloom was still sleeping. Meant that there wasn't any immediate threat.

Smeargle wouldn't be able to weaken it much more, so he was simply told to defend himself. If the Gloom woke up and tried to attack, Smeargle would employ the same Protect/Spore combo as before. Meanwhile, Alex noticed that time was running very short indeed, so he went for one last all-in throw, lobbing as many Park Balls as he could until the Gloom was captured. It didn't matter in the long run - he was going to release it even if he did catch it - but this Gloom might just bump him up a place or two in the contest.

The Gloom was stubborn for a sleeping Pokemon but your persistence paid off in the end. The Park Ball soared once again through the air and sucked the weed inside. A few suspenseful second passed as the ball's white light blinked but soon it stopped and a soft ping declared your capture successful. The ball was then whisked away waiting for your return to the contest headquarters.

(Smeargle should get 5.3 :exp for that, not 1.2 - it's multiplied by the exp that would normally be gained from a victory.)

Also, that's me done for the contest.

Oh wow, sorry about that. Read the partial exp section a dozen times and completely missed the "receive the EXP they would normally receive from fainting the opponent". *sigh*

Edited to fix that
