OUT OF CHARACTER STUFF: Lancios current Party: Tanooki, the Level 5 Zigzagoon. Permission given to make this freeform 'reaching the region post' by: Steel Cerberus Word Count: 5,020 words. Summary: A young man named Jay encounters an odd stranger while on a plane trip, and unknowingly introduces Lancio my side character s background by asking innocent-seeming questions. Huzzah for bad summaries! Rewards: To be able to have my side character Lancio start off with a Level 5 Zigzagoon in possession. Since this Zigzagoon has been with Lancio since it hatched, I would hope also that I could get some happiness points attributed to it as well however, the downside of this Zigzagoon is that it can never evolve, ever in order to make starting out with it more fair. Also since this counts as a reaching the region post: I should like to get the random amount of money, Poketech and Escape Rope you usually get in all starting posts. As I looked out the airplane window, all I could see was clouds, clouds and more clouds. Boy oh boy: when I decided to take the Delibird Airlines to reach Escennia Town in the Opaddeka Region, I honestly didnt think that the plane trip there would be so agonizingly boring. I shouldve brought some music to listen to on the trip or something after all, the only form of entertainment this cheapo brand airlines had were kiddy coloring in books- which had several pages already scribbled on by other passengers. Talk about lame. Hmmmaybe there was another passenger that I could talk to without annoying them? Looking around, I could see that the majority of other passengers were either reading books they brought along or napping excepting one. Some guy sitting next to me that I hadnt really noticed much before-hed been pretty quiet ever since he walked onto the plane, after all. The guy looked like he was currently going through that awkward teenage stage, to be quite frank: his arms and legs looked way too long for his body, and he had a few brownish freckles on his face as well. Not only that: but his eyes also clearly gave away that he was probably going through that awkward time as well: they were so round and such a light shade of brown that he honestly looked like he could have been in one of those manga comics. Either that, or an anime show. His hair was pretty well covered by a green artists cap, but from what I could see of that, it looked much like the guys arms and legs a bit too big for him at the current time. But then again, I cant complain much about odd hairstyles, seeing as I have one myself and all. He also wore a pair of thick-looking black rimmed glasses: and was it just me, or did this guy have a penchant for green? Underneath a dirt-brown jacket with two large pockets at the bottom he wore a T-shirt: and guess what color it was? Yep, it was green. Lime green, to be exact. He also had a pair of green-shaded jeans on, which were folded up slightly at the bottom. I could see that he was wearing a pair of black socks and black shaded boots because of this. He had a large notebook with a green cover in his hands, and was scribbling a sketch of something: but I couldnt see what it was, exactly. He had a strange furred thing in his lap, too. He looked busy with his drawing, and I hated to just interrupt someone like this: but I was BORED, man! I had to talk to someone, and surely this guy wouldnt mind, right? I nudged him gently with an elbow, hoping to grab his attention. I think I might have done that a bit too hard, because his reaction was to almost drop the notebook that he was holding and whirl his head around in an almost frantic way before spotting that I had been the one whod nudged him, and relaxing visibly a little. He still didnt say anything though, pushing the glasses he wore further up his nose so they didnt fall off his face before fixing me with a bewildered sort of expression, as if asking me without words why Id done that. I felt an embarrassed grin form on my face before I said, I was justkind of bored, and wanted someone to talk to. Sorry if I kind of messed up your drawing or anything like that. The teenage-looking younger guy seemed to be even more surprised at my words, light brown eyes going wide: at which I had to wonder what his deal was. Hadnt this guy heard apologies that often when folks did something bad to him? Of course, Jay didnt know why the green-capped stranger had been so stunned by his words- the reason being that not many people had been nice to this particular stranger when they first met him- at all. He was the quiet sort of person who took a long time to ever really say anything to new folk because he preferred the company of pokemon more than the company of people. Not only because his parents had been breeders in Lavaridge and his father figure had over-embellished how awesome pokemon were a little: but also because of the way he had been treated back at school. From day one, there had been trouble for his looks, the fact he had to constantly glasses- and the fact he was basically mute around new folksthe other kids had been merciless bullies to him. Sure, they ACTED sweet and innocent enough when the teachers were looking, but at lunchtimes or when the teachers left the room, they would basically all gang up and pick on the new nerdy guy. It didnt help things that the stranger was too timid back then to even speak up for himself, eithersometimes, he felt like Tanooki was his only friend, to be honest. Who was this Tanooki, you may ask? Well read on, and find out. The green-clad stranger seemed to have gotten over his startled expression now, and seemed to be looking over me with an almost curious expression for some reason. What? Was it my hair? Those dark sunglasses I was wearing? Or maybe he wanted to know who I was? Going on the assumption of the last thought I had, I said, You wanna know my name? Names Jay Im headed to get some experience in one of the teams there. Thats why I got these sunnies. I pointed to the black sunglasses with the yellow tinting on them that I was wearing by way of explanation as to why I was wearing sunglasses in an already dark plane, before asking the stranger, Whats your name? If ya wouldnt mind tellin me, that is. The green-capped one seemed to give a mixed expression to this part sadness: as if he wanted to tell me, but couldnt. It also had a fair bit of shyness about itso maybe this guy was too shy to talk? I ran a hand through my yellow do, saying, Well, if youre a bit shy, thats fine with me. Itd be nice if we could chat to each-other, though. But ah well. If you dont want to talk, you dont want to. It would be nice if we could talk to each-other: the stranger had heard those words before, yes. A long time ago, when he was very young there were two things that had been noticed by his parents. Number one that he seemed to have very bad eyesight. (This was remedied by getting him glasses, but his eyesight was only improved as long as he wore them all the time.) Number two was that compared to other children, he seemed to be a slow developer in actually talking. At all. The stranger seemed to be very attentive of the things that his parents showed him in desperation of trying to get him talk but not a word from him, though he did seem to look very apologetic about the whole thing several times, despite still being very young. Quite a few years passed in a bit of frustration for the parents they tried everything that they could think of, and yet still their son did not speak. The strangers mother, Marissa decided that a loss was a loss- if their son would not talk, that was okay. They would just have to work out other ways to understand him Therefore, she gave the then ten-year old a special gift on his birthday that September: a notebook with a green cover, a grey-lead, and a large eraser. If he couldnt say his words and feelings, maybe he could draw them instead? As I began staring out the window at the clouds again, the stranger caught my attention again: he was waving at me urgently, as if he wanted me to see something. Drawing my eyes back to him, he suddenly flipped to notepad in my direction so that I could see what was on the white paper hed written words on it! Skimming over it, I read, Im sorry I cannot talk to youI find it very hard to talk to new people. But its nice to meet you. My name is Lancio. Lancio, huh? So that was the guys name. And there was the explanation for why he hadnt said anything he was a bit of an introverted person, apparently. But hey, I was just glad my mind was off the boring plane flight! That and meeting new folk is awesome. Holding out a hand, I said, A pleasure to meet ya, Lancey! You dont mind if I call you that, dyou? Thats much easier to say. The younger guy blinked again behind those glasses of his, before shrugging in an non-confrontational way it seemed he didnt mind what he was called, as long as there were no arguments about it. I grinned, saying, Lancey it is! Sodo you not talk because youre quiet and allorcan you not talk at all? Im sorry if that sounds like a rude question Lancey turned the notebook back towards himself, flipping the page hed already written on over and beginning to write yet again with swift, almost elegant waves of his hand that held a grey-lead pencil in its grasp. I watched him this time with interest he seemed like he was pretty awesome at this drawing thing. Though most people like Jay might have made the assumption that Lancio Deniron couldnt talk because he usually wrote or drew down what he wanted to state instead of saying it the reality was that he could talk: it was just thathe was just so quiet around new folks until he learnt to trust them with good reason, because of the constant teasing he had received at school. The other reason was that hed taken a long time to talk even around his parents, and it had been the actions of another person that had gotten him to speak in the first place Though Marissa and Stanley, Lancios parents - were rather accepting of the matter that Lancio wasnt talking at all, Roberto a teenage lad who often came to visit them was less accepting, muttering things like: If Lancio doesnt learn to talk, hell be picked on something fierce at school! If he was feeling especially nasty, he might say, Even a Whismur makes more noise than your son does, for crying out loud! Stanley would sigh shaking his head at the loud young man, before saying, Well, if you have an idea on how to help Lancio talk, Im sure all of us would like to hear it. Robertos face would turn red, and he would walk off, mumbling something to himself- he was a big talker, but he rarely had ideas to back up this big talking but when he did have ideas that backed up all his boasting, they were big ones. This would be proven one fateful day, a few days before Lancios eleventh birthday. Hed rang Lancios parents to say that hed finally figured out something that if seen, would make ANYONE start talking. Marissa and Stanley rolled their eyes: theyd heard THIS many times before. However, the two were mighty surprised as Roberto pulled a large backpack off his back, out of which he pulled a small brown egg which had a light brown zigzagging line of coloration in the middle: a pokemon egg. The silent boy eyed the egg with a mixture of confusion and bewilderment on his face, as Roberto said, My Linoone laid this egg recently- and I reckon seein something as awe-inspiring as a pokemon hatching should coax someone to talk! Marissa hummed: she and Stanley had never been trainers: but as explorers, they had seen many people passing through the town that had them and their parents were breeders only, they usually gave the eggs away to their customers, so Lancio had never seen an egg close up before and this idea hadnt occurred to them because theyd been so panicky in nature considering trying to think of something that would help Lancio learn how to talksuddenly, their thoughts were interrupted when the egg which had been placed on the kitchen table began to shake violently, cracks begging to etch down the shell, giving it the look that spider webs had suddenly been woven over the top of it. Roberto folded his arms and grinned as Lancio watched the egg with widened eyes the shell now falling off in big chunks: and one could see a small paw poking out of the cracks every now and again. Suddenly, with a loud crack that seemed to reverberate through the fragile brown eggs entire being, the entire top half of the egg broke off, a small baby Zigzagoon tumbling out from the newly-made hole, along with quite a lot of egg yolk, which earned a few quiet grumbles from Marissa: she had just CLEANED that table before Roberto came in but if this helped her son to talk, she wasnt going to complain not now, at least, though she made a mental note to give Roberto a stern talking-to later on. The small pokemon let out a tiny cry, taking shaky first steps and almost falling off the table due to the fact it still had gunk in its eyes and couldnt see. Roberto made a dash for the normal-type: but halted as he saw Lancio had caught the tiny pokemon, stroking the pokemons fur- not seeming to mind the gunk that got on his fingers as he did so. Then, he actually spoke for the first time, saying, Tah-nooki? As he said this, he held the pokemon up slightly. Stanley and Marissa stared, as did Roberto: but the teenage boy was staring because he had no idea what the word Tanooki meant, not because Lancio had spoke and all. As Marissa picked Lancio up in a large hug, literately babbling on and on due to her excitement at hearing Lancio finally say something, Stanley wrenched his attention away from them to explain to Roberto: Marissa tells Lancio many tales of fantasy and such- and one of the stories that Lancio seems to like the most is the legend of the Tanooki- which are apparently raccoons in the olden days which could change themselves into human form and back to animal again at will. Roberto blinked in realization, before grinning: he could understand why the silly boy would think that a Zigzagoon was a Tanooki- they were raccoons, after all. Walking over to the boy and Marissa, he said, Well no need to thank me for my obviously awesome idea! Ill be taking my Linoones Zigzagoon back now. Roberto then turned his gaze to the baby pokemon and stared for a moment the normal-type seemed to be very interested in Lancio, sniffing his hair before beginning to nuzzle his face, the boy laughing the pokemons fur tickled him! The teenager groaned, saying, Oooh boythis is awkward. Im guessing, from the way that Zigzagoons smooching up ta Lancio that it thinks the kids his dad. Stanley laughed, saying, Oh well, it doesnt matter. Weve been thinking about a pet in the house- and I and Marissa will take care of the Zigzagoon until Lancio gets old enough to. Itll be a good learning experience for him: since most kids want to be trainers when they grow up an all. Roberto blinked, saying, Ysure? The kid might get a lil attached to it when people go to become new trainers, they usually pick their first starter from the lab! Stanley said, What rule says that your starter cant be a more common pokemon, really? You should be able to take whatever pokemon you like for a starter, in my opinion. Roberto grumbled at this but he knew Stanley was right, and so grudgingly let Lancio keep the baby Zigzagoon, despite wanting to keep it himself because it WAS his Linoones egg and all. Lancio seemed to adore the little pokemon greatly, though he had no idea at this young age that the pokemon thought he was its dad: he took it everywhere he went, even though his mother told him off for letting the pokemon get into the cupboards. Stanley helped the young lad to take care of the pokemon, and took this opportunity to tell him gradually- all that he had learned from his breeder parents about pokemon. Hed even provided the goon with a spare pokeball so that Lancio could technically own it Lancey finished his sketching and showed me the paper yet again this time, it said, I can talkbut I just take a bit of a long time to do soI tend to not open up to others until I get to know them bettersorry. I said, Fair enough-huh? Wait a minute: that furred thing in his lapit didnt just move just then, did it? My eyes were drawn away from Lancey for a moment as the furred thing uncurled and it hit me like a lightning bolt This furred thing was a pokemon. A POKEMON! Wow I thought Id have to reach the Opaddeka Region before I got to see one of these, to be honest. Getting my silver-painted pokedex out of my bag, I pointed it at the pokemon, at which it buzzed before saying, This is a Zigzagoon. It is a Normal-type pokemon usually found commonly in Hoeen. They are very curious pokemon by nature, and when they find an object they have never seen before, they will instinctively go up to it in order to sniff it and try and find out what it is. The pokemon was very small: so I guessed it must have been a level five or something like that. It looked up at me when I went to put my pokedex away, and began sniffing at the machine a little. I laughed, saying, Hey bud thats not edible! You wont like that, trust me. The raccoon stared at me with big eyes, tilting its head to one side as I pulled some beef jerky from my pocket and held it in front of the normal-type: the raccoon sniffed the food before taking some and snapping it up quickly, at which point it began wagging its furred tail and making little purring-like sounds. Cute lil pokemon, it was. I grinned at its happy noises, and ruffled its spiky fur a little, saying to Lancey, This lil guy yours? Hes a regular little charmer, he is. Lancey smiled at seeing the pokemon so happy, before nodding. I guess he didnt need to draw such a short answer to THAT question. He seemed to be drawing something again now, tooas he drew, I said conversationally, So-you must be wanting to become a trainer if you already have a pokemon with ya. What made you want to become a trainer in the first place? Lancey scratched at the back of the green cap he wore, before showing me the notepad again: hed drawn a picture of me patting his pokemon! I grinned, saying, Hey, thats pretty awesome! It looks like it could jump off the page any moment! I then noticed hed written something as well: ActuallyI almost didnt become a trainer, for a while back in my past. I out-right stared at him, asking, Huh? Why is that? He turned to the next page in his notebook, beginning to write a whole load of stuff, trying his best not to upset the raccoon in his lap, who was rolling around in his lap happily, tail still wagging. It didnt take much to make that little pokemon happy, it seemedmaybe because it was still young. It also seemed like the explanation for the next question was going to be long, by the looks of things. Yes, Lancios writings were true for a while, hed almost given up on getting here, though it had been his dream for a while. Said dream had started ever since school times. Snce pokemon werent allowed at school, he often hid himself away in the school library and his curiosity as a child was so great that he couldnt help reading the books there- and this is where his great knowledge probably came from; Because he hated confrontation and would much rather just be left in peace and quiet, the library where most of the other kids didnt like going as it was too boring was a perfect retreat for him, and he went there often: thus, he had plenty of time to pore over the details of the books there. The librarian was so nice and helpful, too willing to help Lancio fetch some of the books that were too high to reach and happily explaining details in the books that the young male didnt understand well. Lancio adored reading about new facts and the like- and new places, too. They sounded so wonderful and so full of all sorts of interesting things to sketch. His art teacher said he was a pretty good sketcher for one so young, and going to such places might help also, to curb his shyness and general closed nature around folksone particular place that caught his eye in those books was a place called the Opaddeka Region very far away from where he lived, but full of pokemon not native to his area. Being able to see new kinds of pokemon sounded quite wonderful to him: but he didnt want to leave his mother and father: or Tanooki, for that matter. Though the idea was interesting, and he really would like being a trainer: he pushed these thoughts to the back of his head. Besides: being a trainer meant a lot of fighting in order to train your pokemon, and he hated confrontation in general. However though he kept this idea of his mostly to himself, someone did find out eventuallyand this happened one afternoon when he came home early from school like he always did, to see Tanooki. As the young lad walked home, his Zigzagoon friend was waiting at the front door for him, and ran over to him and was affectionate to his father though Lancio, once hed learned about the pokemon thinking he was his dad, had tried to tell the lil pokemon he was not its dad it still treated him as such: and thus it ran up to him and was generally very affectionate. However, Lancios patting of his pokemon friend was interrupted by a snickering behind him, at which Lancio turned eyes going wide in horror to see that one of those jerks that frequently teased him had followed him home today. The young man said to Lancio, Heh - it figures that a weakling such as yerselfd have a weak pokemon like a ZIGZAGOON. Talk about settin a new low. He smirked then, before saying, But an awesome guy like me has a more POWERFUL pokemon. I think your little furballd be good target practice for one of my newer ones, dont you? The nasty fellow stepped back, before throwing a pokeball onto the ground from his pocket a large, bulky-looking Makuhita appearing from it in the standard flash of light. The bully grinned, saying, Makuhita that fur balls your target practice fer the day. Smack em good. The fighting-type grinned in the same sadistic manner as his master, before lunging at the small normal-type with a closed fist: Lancio jumping in horror but the attack flew right over the raccoons head, seeing as how small Tanooki was and all. The bullys smirk somewhat faded, he saying, Hit that furball! The fighting-type pulled its fist back yet again, before flinging it down towards Tanooki with frightening force- but the Zigzagoon: thinking this whole thing was a fun game, suddenly darted to the side at the last moment, letting out a playful cry as he did so. Lancio blinked- even though Tanooki was still very young and playful it was like battling was second nature to him. As if it was in instinct to dodge the attacks coming his way like thatthe Makuhita growled angrily, before flailing out in a blind fury at the goon with a volley of punches trying to get at least one to hit- but the other pokemons rage was in such a state that it wasnt really paying attention to the younger pokemons movements, and as such, none of them hit. Furious, the bully said, Use Cross Chop and make sure it hits that stupid thing! Lancios surprised expression at seeing Tanooki dodge the attacks so well turned to one of fright Cross Chop was not normally the kind of move that missed. Just then, when it seemed like the lower-leveled Zigzagoon was about to get pulverized, another voice suddenly rang out across the yard, saying, Linoone, use Take Down now! A white ferret-like creature suddenly seemed to dart into the scene from nowhere, and slammed its body heavily against the Makuhita before it could attack Tanooki: and obviously the evolved pokemon was quite powerful, as that one hit was enough to faint the fighting-type in mere seconds, the bully cursing as he recalled it, before running off he wasnt going to stick around whoever owned THAT pokemon. Lancio picked up Tanooki, glad that he was safe but the appearance of the Linoone worried him. Just then, he saw Roberto walk out from behind the Linoone, and relaxed - if Roberto owned this Linoone, he neednt worry. Roberto eyed Tanooki and Lancio, saying to Lancio, I understand that ya dont wanna put Tanooki in danger, since hes only a lil pokey and all but why didnt you at least try to give some advice? Lancio said, Yo-you know I dont like fighting, Robertobesides, if Im not going to become a pokemon trainer, I dont technically have the right to go demanding stuff from my friend like that Roberto folded his arms in a thoughtful way, saying, Well, whats stoppin ya becoming a trainer, if thats what ya want? I can tell you wanna become one by the way you said that last sentence just stop bein such a worry-wart and go do your dream! So what if you haveta fight? Im sure Tanooki for one, wouldnt mind protecting you, because hes so close ta yaand besides. You dont haveta be forced inta fights if you dont want emunless the wild pokemon or trainer wont take no for an answer! Lancio blinked at these words but in his heart, he knew that Roberto had a valid point. However how was he to get to this Opaddeka Region? His worry must have shown quite clearly on his face, for Roberto grinned, before saying: Dont worry about it. Im a part time worker with Delibird Airlines if I really suck up to em, I can get you tickets. Lancio blinked, saying, Th-thats kind of yo-youbut am I allowed to take Tanooki there? Roberto nodded, saying, Yeah, usually youre allowed to take one pokemon with you, as long as you already have caught it and all. You shouldnt have much trouble. Just wait a couple a weeks so I can get those tickets, and then you can go! Lancio nodded at hearing this he was very excited. In just a few weeks, hed finally get to go to the new reigon. Hed certainly have to remember to pack drawing supplies to draw all the new things he would see and Tanookis pokeball. But most of allhed have to remember to take courage, for little did he know, this dream of his would test his very nature as a person in the future After what seemed ages, Lancey finished writing and boy oh boy, was the description long! But I basically got the gist of thingsbecause he really didnt like fighting, or forcing others into fights, he had almost thought becoming a trainer was a bad idea. However, someone close to him had persuaded him not to let go of the said dream so easily. I reckoned that was a good thing- if Lancey had just given up on that kind of dream, he wouldnt be here now, and I would have practically died from boredom! Okay, so he didnt talk to you- and he seemed so eager to avoid conflict that he might seem like a suckbut I reckoned he seemed like a pretty decent guy despite said flaws, ta be honest. Suddenly a voice boomed out over the loudspeaker, saying, We are about to land in Escennia Town! Please collect your belongings from the bag racks over head before the plane lands: but do not take off your seatbelts until the plane is completely stationary. Thank you for flying with Delibird Airlines! I grabbed my bag from where Id shoved it underneath the chair in front of me, before saying, Its a shame we didnt get to chat moreyoure a pretty neato guy, Lancey. Hey! I know! Since you probably already have a Poketech on ya: you could register my number! Ill ring you up when I get my first pokemon, and maybe we can meet up and have a friendly match, huh? Lancey smiled again at this- heh, though he didnt like confrontation, he liked the sound of meeting me again and having a friendly chat like now. Thisd be cool. Holding out my tech, I pressed a red button on the side, which then received Lanceys Teach number- and he did the same with mine. Though we might not meet again for a while- seeing as Lancey probably had his own idea of what to do upon getting here: I wanted to keep an eye on Lancey. I bet hell have some big things headed his way, yessir! Thus, as the plane made its landing: I didnt feel like this was goodbyejust the beginning of an awesome friendship. Okee Dokee. I still don't understand all this side charactor stuff and probably never will but here we go. Suggestions...first, I like your writing style but you really need to figure out how to break up those longs blocks of text. Solid 'walls' make it difficult follow and promote 'scanning' - not good. You could have a perfectly awesome story and the person will be overwhelmed by the text and just scan it instead. So fix that in the future and you're good. Your side person can have a level 5 Zigzgoon. You do not the evo restriction. It can evolve when you want it too. You can also have either 3 or 6 to go with it. |

Let's see...though the 3 Exp is tempting, I did want Tanooki to have happiness already on him, so - I take the X 6!Also - since this is a starting post, does Lancio get the money, escape Rope and Pok'etech too, or not? I think I should know that ebfore I rush off to make his profile... ^^; You get .3 for taking the time to read those blocks of text, also. Yay you!
