ain't no new thing
Professor Gilbert Abner was perched on a single stringy bough, notepad flipped open and a high-res camera slung around his neck. He placed a palm on the trunk, steadying himself, as he took a seat on his tree-stand.

Chirping happily just a few trees away was a Chatot, weaving in and out of the gargantuan leaves. He raised the camera to his eyes, and focused in. The tiny bird clamped on a sturdy branch, and picked at a small twig. His finger click, the shutters clanged together in quick succession.

His PokeTech vibrated ever-so-quietly. It was enough--the tiny fledgling skittered away across the sky. Cursing under his breath, he dug it out, and flipped it open. He was needed back in the research center. He stood, packed up his tree-stand, and quickly wobbled across a few branches, returning to the wooden platforms suspended half-a-mile over the watery jungle floor.

Several minutes later, he arrived at the front of the research center. Fumbling with his key-card, he opened it, and went inside.

Sitting at the reception was Shirley, as effervescent as ever, and Randy, leaning casually against the desk.

"What's the problem, Randy?" asked Gilbert as he sat down his camera. "I was getting some great shots of a Chatot, with an extended beak. We might have found a species mid-branch, and you scared it off before I could take any notes-"

"This is much more important!" interrupted Randy. "We got a call from the Deepwood Research Center. THE Deepwood Research Center! We've been invited to the annual conference. Well, you've been invited. They loved your paper on the Chatot branch-"

"Which you interrupted!" ejaculated Gilbert.

"Unimportant!" asserted Randy. "What's important is securing the grant! Every year, they award the Research Grant to a small-time center they feel is doing the most important work. We're in the running! If we get this grant, you can sit in your company helicopter and take all the pictures you want.

"So, you're going there. You'll need to be there in a month. Get your work together, we're sending you out. You'll stop by Hillmoss and pick up a Pokemon-"

"Woah woah woah! Pick up a Pokemon? SET OUT? Are you suggesting that I'm walking there?" said Gilbert, dumbfounded.

"They've added a second grant, for Pokemon trainers making discoveries. That's our back-up if your bird stuff isn't good enough. You're going to become a trainer."

Gilbert sighed. Once again, his boss took things too seriously. He was a thirty year-old man, who just wanted to focus on his work. He didn't spend eight years at Escennia to run around the region doing Randy's dirty-work. The urge to fire off a snappy retort and refuse was great, but... this was Deepwood. He'd been compiling this report for years. He had always dreamed of publishing a paper. He couldn't refuse. And Randy knew it.

"Here's a pack. Some zenni, a Poketech, an Escape Rope with three charges. Our Radloff connections have offered to pick you up and take you at least that far."

One of the perks of being a small company. You got to know people, and those people owed you favors.

"Josh. It'll be nice to see him again," said Gilbert, gritting his teeth.

"Better get moving," said Randy. Gilbert forced a smile.

At the edge of town, Gilbert met Josh. Josh was a simple man, son of a farmer and one himself. Gilbert had been doing a behavioral analysis of trained, farmed, and wild Mareep. The paper, unfortunately, had gone unpublished, but he forged a friendship with the unassuming fellow.

"So, yer headed to Hillmoss?" he asked as he opened the door to his truck. No vehicles were allowed in the jungle. Gilbert was proud of helping that bill along.

"Yep. Randy's making me. I don't see any other choice, though. At least I'll get to talk to Professor Willow. I bet SHE has a ride," said Gilbert, crossing his arms.

"Well, it's the least I can do after you got rid of my Mightyena problem."

Gilbert had noticed a pattern in the Mareep's behavior, and when they started disappearing, he discovered the pack terrorizing the farm.

"Oh, it was no problem. All there in the numbers."

They reached the city limits.

"Thank you Josh!"

"Good luck Gilbert!"

And he headed into town.
