Sure enough, the ground became flat. As Alex trekked onwards, Guru and berry pot in tow, he also noticed that the ground underfoot was becoming steadily softer. Relatively dry grass had given way to moisture-softened fields of dark green. The trainer considered driving this portion of the trip in his jeep, but no. The entire point of the trans-continental voyage was that he walked and took in all the sights and sounds.

Not that there were many, given the low-hanging mist lurking in the middle distance.

Still, Guru was there to keep an eye and a mind out for trouble, and Alex knew from past experience to always remain vigilant when travelling. One never could tell when something wild was going to pop out of the greenery.

Hills gave way to squishy earth - it was somewhat disturbing. As you take steps, bubbles of trapped air gurgle at the edge of your rubber soles. Each air-less vacuum makes a gross sucking nose to keep your feet in its grasp, but release soon after. Each step is harder to take than the last, but the thought of the jeep came to mind.

It was a good thing not to take the jeep either, who knew when the sinklands came up - your jeep could be gone, just like that. The squishy ground and the loud shlops of your feet kept pokemon at bay. Not many liked to get their paws dirty at the sound of a human coming by. Braveness and stupidity were two different things.

Unfortunately, nothing would come to encounter you this time around. Look on the bright side though, it meant that uninterrupted travel would cover more ground in less time - always the thought of a trans-continental trek, right?

"Sense anything around, Guru?"

Nope. Everything's probably hiding from you.

That wasn't particularly bad news, given the terrain. Those military-issue boots were making themselves very useful in the soggy dirt. And hey, Alex's oversized feet were coming in handy too, spreading his bodyweight every so slightly more than a normal person so that he didn't sink as far with each squishy step.

Okay, it probably wouldn't have any real effect, but a guy's gotta introspect about something.

Ah, the advantages of having built in snow...mud...shoes. Whatever works, right?

By the way, there is an Oddish. It's playing in the mud and having a bit of fun throwing crap everywhere. Mud bombs away!

Did we mention you're in the Sinklands? Congratulations, Sinklands. Move along now.

It was at about this time that Alex made his semi-regular check on the berry tree. Just in time, too - the latest crop of Watmels was ripe and ready to be picked. So he did just that, carefully removing the fruits from the plant to stash with the others. It needed some watering, too, so he took care of that.

Oh look, an Oddish. Alex leaned to one side to avoid a stray glob of hurled mud, then dismissed the idea of fighting it. Probably wasn't a good idea in all this mud and reduced visibility and everything. Better to save the battling for an easier, firmer terrain.

So on he went. Guru's latest assignment was to check for hidden sinkholes, and steer Alex away from them. Or failing that, to help lift him out of them should he fall into one. It was a trainer's lot in life to get covered in various kinds of gunk, it seemed.

Three Watmels for you.

And Alex must have this aura of anti - Pokemonness, because...there were no Pokemon trying to jump him. At all. It must be a really crappy day out there in the Sinklands.

It was all very quiet. Maybe a little too quiet. \The most likely explanation was that the wild pokémon out in these parts didn't want to mess with an Alakazam that could implode their brains with little or no warning. Of course, Guru wasn't the type for random acts of violence, not unless Alex gave him an order or he was severely provoked.

With no external distractions, Alex had no reason to stop. The tree was healthy, Guru was fine, and barring the occasional soggy patch underfoot, he was making good time. He checked his map to make sure that he was still heading southwards, and continued on towards the region of denser mist ahead of him.

Sir, methinks you need a kick in the pants. So here, have a kick in the pants. -boots-

Now that Alex's metaphorical rear was stinging, there was progress! Though how much of it could be called progress remains to be seen, as all of his vision and Guru's too was swamped in a haze of dense white mist. Vision suddenly became a wonderful luxury of the past, and the only things clearly visible were maybe those six inches from his face.

Aside from the fact that it was like Alex had suddenly stepped into a mashed potato factory, there was nothing else impeding his progress. Beware, though, as the ground is still rather iffy and there are odd noises sounding here and there in the surroundings.

tl;dr: Mist Valley. Gogogogo.

Note to self: next time I go to Misthenge, go there by sea. I can't see a bloody thing.

The Mst Valley's name was, sadly to say, completely accurate. It was a valley, and the mist was so prevalent that navigation by sight wasn't really an option anymore. That was rather tedious, to say the least.

"Guru, can you see aything?"

I know where you are from your brain patterns, but otherwise, no.

"Hmm... try using Miracle Eye."

Miracle Eye was a move normally used to get a lock on evasive targets. Perhaps the Alakazam could use it as a form of ultravision. Meanwhile, Alex located his night-vision goggles. Experimentally, he put them to his eyes to see if his vision improved any. While it wasn't technically nighttime, the fog was sufficiently dense that an infra-red picture was better than relying on the naked eye. Indeed, Guru showed up as a red blob against the otherwise violet backdrop, and the fog and mud were at slightly different temperatures, so at least he could see where the ground was.

Of course, if it turned out that the light was amplified too much by the goggles to the point of unnavigability, then Alex wouldn't use them, instead relying on Guru's second sight. One of the plans had to work, right? Either way, he knew that if he kept going, and went directly south, he'd eventually hit Malral. Or a sinkhole. Hopefully he or Guru would see the sinkhole first.

After a bit of clarification that the OME Night Vision goggles have both standard light amplification and infrared option/systems, I go on modding with the hilarity of a moose. ... A moose...? What the hell? I blame too many sodas and lots of ice cream, 'Brawl, and many other things. Good nights are good, but the day and light of the fog proves blinding upon putting on the goggles.

With a momentary flinch, you quickly readjust from the night vision amp. to the delightfully keyed down infrared. The misty blots of the humidity-causing fog form to block some visions of heat, but not a great deal. Visibility is a given, but sinkholes, assuming that they have no temperatures of their own, cannot be seen. Although, that unlucky pokemon or two stuck in the pits of doom could probably be seen using this interesting technology.

Assuming Miracle Eye affects how one can attack a dark type and lowers any evasive boosts, we will assume that the fog is considered a dark type. When combined with psychic apparatus now, a clean path can be seen, but only my the psychic - no linking ability can be made, for some reason or another. Guru, at this point, is completely focused on sorting out his own path, rather than worrying over his trainer, since you seem you have it figured out.

That's good! ... Right...?

"Wait, don't step there!" Guru might have warned (or warned too late) as you take one step forward. Shloop! (Sha-loop!) Down you go. At least one leg, but still a muddy mess from that one leg down, and possibly the majority of your shin. Although, it appears your sloppy endeavor has allowed you to spot a warm/hot thing. In the next (presumable) sinkhole over, there is something struggling, though quietly, to get out of the mud.

Upon closer inspection, one will notice little roots, leaves, and a vascular tissue system - every aspect of a true plant (Unless I am confused, or stupid, because I didn't actually pay attention in Bio). At least you could identify it as a dicot from its vein-y system. "Bell," it said announced disgruntled, waving a small warmish leaf to catch your attention. Apparently, years of living in this swamp may not have improved its navigation of its roots, but allowed it to see through the thick fog.

But hey, your leg is still stuck, would you be willing to help out this little bellsprout before losing it in the fog once more?

Watch out for that...

*Sploot*

...sinkhole.

The sudden disappearance of Alex's leg from his heat vision caused him to lose balance, and he ended up sat at the edge of the sinkhole, with half his left leg submerged in mud. There was no pain, so he hadn't injured himself - always a good outcome. His leg was just wet, and cold. Quite annoying, but Malral was close enough (presumably) that trenchfoot would not be an issue.

"Um, Guru? A little help?"

The psychic had the luxury of superior fog vision, so he had no trouble locating Alex, and helping him extract his leg from the gunk. A bit of telekinetic coaxing of the mud to loosen from around Alex's foot, and some wiggling and positioning from the trainer's part, and eventually he was free. Score one for the trainer and pokémon. And check if the berry tree's okay... yes. Excellent.

As he was getting to his feet again, Alex noticed the Bellsprout-shaped red blob just up ahead. Looked like it was having the same problems with sinkholes that he'd just encountered. It wouldn't take long to sort out, so he decided to help the little plant dislodge itself. Same technique as before, Guru thinning out the surrounding mud while Alex gently tugged on the rooted appendages.

Assumng that this plan worked, and that no-one fell into another stray sinkhole, Alex smiled and nodded at the 'sprout (maybe it could see his face through the fog), and continued on his way with Guru. He would definitely take detours around this valley in future - low visibility was generally a bad thing.

The trick worked and you were freed from the doom that was sinkhole! Bellsprout sure appreciated the help, that's for sure, but instead of running off like every self-respecting pokemon would, she decided to help you through the fog. Letting loose overgrown roots, the bellsprout caught hold of your arm, careful not to squeeze too tightly as she reeled herself in.

Hugging your arm, she slowly climbed her way up your sleeve. Settling to a spot on your shoulder, she nudged your head as you walked, navigating through the mist for you - each time she jostled your head, Guru may notify what you would have stepped on otherwise. A rock or a root, maybe. Tripping isn't fun, really.

Soon the fog seemed to become less dense and a cooler breeze rolled into the area. If you attempt to thank the bellsprout for guiding you, she has already gone. Mysteries of the Murmur Valley are often never answered, but at the very least, they are usually helpful - in the fog, where it is hard to see, pokemon are happy to help travelers, because they are rare sights.
