[Journey Plan: Mist Valley -> Mt. Fog -> Soggy Dirt -> Brightopolis]

Philip and his companions walked out of Malral, feeling pretty pleased with themselves. Philip was happy that he now had three pokemon, and his pokemon were just happy to meet each other. He really wanted to get to Brightopolis quickly to just enjoy a few days relaxing at the beaches and resorts there. Who wouldn't want to do that?

While Philip was daydreaming about the beach, Blossom and Buddy played a game of tag, constantly weaving in and out of Philip's feet, which led to a few stumbles followed by some scolding. Then of course, ten seconds later the leg-weaving resumed. Atom on the other hand walked next to Philip, content with just enjoying the scenery.

Philip figured he might as well check out his Poke'tech, and began hitting some buttons in an attempt to learn all its' features. He had never really been good at technological things, so trying to understand the Poke'tech did not go well, eventually ending with Philip putting away the device in disgust.

Ahh...technology...user-unfriendly. Gotta love it.

Not that the scenery was any better. Or, perhaps, the lack thereof. The mist was everywhere, sometimes so thick that it was hard to see a foot in front of your face. Most of the time, at least, it was more like five feet at least...but even so, it was a pain to navigate through.

Maybe the menus of the Poketech were a better bet than this. Was that the same tree you saw five minutes ago? It couldn't be...right? But it did look awful familiar...

A titter from the upper branches indicated that you weren't alone, either. A pudgy little bird sat in the fork of a couple branches, beady black eyes fixed on you as he chortled again. You didn't recall seeing the bird before...but then, why was he laughing at you now?

Just as Philip was about to moan in frustration from seeing the same stupid tree, he noticed a small bird in the stupid tree. Still recovering from a bad mood due to the Poke'tech, and the various scratches he had received earlier in the Forest of Fury, the bird immediately became a stupid bird. And this particular stupid bird was laughing at Philip, with it's stupid beady black eyes while sitting in it's stupid tree. He was pretty annoyed, to say the least, and he had barely started travelling!

"Okay then, smarty, we'll see who's laughing in a minute!" Philip raged. Blossom sort of scooted away from her owner, who was beginning to frighten0 her a little, while Buddy just sort of watched the bird's reaction. Atom just stood there, calm as ever. "Blossom! Magical leaf!" Philip commanded. He might of been taking out a tad of his anger on the Pidgey, but Blossom wasn't going to be the one to tell him, so he obliged, preparing to send out a barrage of leaves at the bird.

The bird chortles merrily at your ire, dropping out of the tree lazily as the chikorita preps and fires the barrage of leaves, lazily avoiding the worst of them and gaining only a few nicks and cuts from them on his way down, still chuckling merrily.

He lit on the ground with a chirp, lightly as one of his own feathers, and fluttered them, then flapped, then sniggered again, continuing to beat them furiously, sending a spray of goodness knows what up with it toward Blossom, the bits of dirt, leaves and other grime spattering the grass pokemon, not causing any damage, but making her eyes water.

And the bird continues to chuckle in amusement. Seems he's easily amused, or a joker or something...yeah. Annoying.

The Pidgey was only getting more and more annoying, which made Philip more and more annoyed. If you thought he was angry before, you haven't seen him like this. Now Philip wanted to horribly crush the Pidgey in this battle. Now it was on Blossom's level, which gave her the advantage. This battle couldn't be won with grass type moves when the opponent is a flying type.

"Use Poisonpowder now, and make sure to spread it widely, so the Pidgey can't fly out of it in time," Philip instructed, glaring at the Pidgey. Blossom nodded, preparing to disperse the poisonous particles into the air. A poisoned Pidgey would be alot easier to beat, simply because the longer the battle went on the more influential the attack would be.

Buddy watched the battle intently; He hadn't exactly known Philip for a long time, so this wasn't the best third-fifth impression, what with Philip being angry/grumpy and all. But that didn't discourage Buddy, so he thought about Philip's strategies in an effort to hopefully be able to easily understand any strategies Philip would use with him. But, a strategy with a Chikorita would be substantially different than if it were with a Poochyena.

The pidgey just kept on beating his wings madly as Blossom exuded a cloud of noxious spores, sending a blast of them right back into the chikorita's face, causing her to gag as well, as the bird sneezed somewhat, taking to the air again, a bit unsteadily.

Well...it's the oddest Mirror Move I've seen...but it worked...unfortunately. And at least he's not laughing any more.

Okay, now even Blossom was starting to get a little PO'ed, which was pretty hard to do. This Pidgey was one annoying little bird. Philip considered the battle for a moment. Philip's best bet was to use the Antidote now, which was exactly what he did. "C'mere Blossom," He called to his pokemon. She sprinted over to her trainer. "Once I'm done with this, go back out there and use a Magical Leaf above the Pidgey, forcing him to the ground. If you hit him too, that wouldn't hurt, and then once he's at ground level go in for a tackle," Philip instructed.

Blossom was limited to only three direct-damage causing moves: Magical Leaf, Razor Leaf, and Tackle. The first two were grass, making them weak against their flying typed opponent. Tackle, however, wasn't, which was exactly why Philip had Blossom use that. The worst case scenario would be Philip being forced to have Buddy help Blossom out. He'd rather not, but he was pretty confident both of them together could easily take care of this Pidgey.

The pidgey wheeled and darted above the battlefield, all but turning on a dime midair and folding his wings as you hurried to administer the antidote to your pokemon. the little bird dove neatly, plowing right into Blossom and sending the chikorita sprawling as she tried ot recover from the Antidote's administration in time to react, but couldn't strike nearly as solidly as the bird before he was in the air again, darting nimbly about in the mist.

Now Philip seriously began considering letting Buddy help out Blossom. He knew they worked together well, but Blossom wasn't entirely out of the battle yet. He thought for a moment before revealing his next move to his pokemon. "Okay Blossom, as soon as Pidgey is about to attack you, use Magical Leaf as cover and try to dodge the attack!" He called out. Buddy seemed interested for a moment, looking at Philip, as if he wanted permission to join in.

"Not yet, maybe soon," Philip warmly smiled, gently patting Buddy on the head. He was glad Buddy was eager to fight, but he wanted to give Blossom a chance. He was interested to see how well she'd perform this strategy; she'd have to have pretty swift thinking to perform the attack in time.

The Pidgey, at this point, was slowly starting to show signs of fatigue. The poison was beginning to take hold in its system, seeping its way through and cursing it slowly with injury that it could not shake off alone. This gave the Chikorita an advantage in the battle; no such affliction was bothering it, but it was having an increasingly hard time seeing thanks to the mist and the like. Perhaps fortunate it knew an attack that seldom ever missed, for else it would be at an even more severe disadvantage than the Pidgey.

The strategy was sound, if not a bit difficult to execute; as the Chikorita whirled the leaf on its head to loose its special attack, the leaf slammed into the Pidgey who was also making its attack move at that point. The Pidgey took a hit, but was not fully deterred from its strike; Blossom was however lucky that it was merely a glancing hit instead of a full-bodied tackle that would otherwise have taken it in this mist.

The battle was starting to get to the point where it could be resolved quickly with a very decisive strike - was it possible for Philip to find that hit amidst the smoke and fog and guide his friend to victory, or would the slowly-mounting injuries continue to pile up and cause Blossom to lose this fight? The future, after all, was fluid, and a good strategy with good execution would determine the outcome. Philip needed to be on top form, as did his friend.

This was it. The Pidgey was probably Philip's most difficult foe yet, but he was confient in Blossom. She definetly had the capacity to win this battle, her trainer just needed to think up a good strategy. The Chikorita glanced a quick look at Philip, who was in deep thought. He really needed to hurry up, or Blossom would have to improvise; something she really didn't want to try out. She called to her trainer, before Buddy barked something to his travelling partner.

"Use the leaves that don't miss, in two times the bird will faint!" the black dog barked happily. Blossom nodded, not waiting for Philip's consent. He didn't exactly have a better plan, or even a plan at all. Buddy seemed content with letting Blossom do the work now; his plan was simple yet effective, which was all Blossom needed to finish the battle. Philip smiled to himself. Good, Buddy was learning battle tactics already. He had stalled on purpose; he wanted Blossom to be able to make battle desicions by herself in case Philip couldn't for her.

Buddy had thought of Blossom's strategy for her, but even if his plan didn't work perfectly, at least one of his pokemon was learning good strategy. Plus, they were becoming more friendly, which was a definite bonus.

The plan was sound, at the very least. Repeated usage of a move that was a consistently-striking move meant that using that move more than once would allow guaranteed damage on the foe. Unfortunately, there was also one flaw with using the same move over and over again until one could no longer do so; it wasn't very efficient in terms of loosing multiple hits.

As such, it meant that one hit from Blossom was all it got off before the Pidgey made its own strike - first by kicking up some sand and dirt towards its foe with its talons as a screen to hide behind while it made its own offensive through the sand as the typical Pidgey Sand-Attack, flapping its wings and dashing through at high speeds to strike the Chikorita behind it. Its plan was much more sound; tactics were better when they used the terrain and varying moves to create longer chains of strikes that could devastate a foe. It would be a lesson learned for Buddy and Blossom, especially when one of them was on the receiving end of pain.

The Pidgey collided yet again with the Chikorita, knocking the little Grass-type back from the hit. Soon it would come to pass that one of these two would fall; it would simply be determined by the one who loosed the fastest attack next. Fortunately, that title belonged to Blossom the Chikorita and her resplendent leaf strikes; one more crossed the battlefield at high speed to strike the Pidgey and-- finally-- end the bout. However, this whole debacle left Blossom in a critical state, and she would require immediate attention. Needless to say she wouldn't be fighting much more in this state, and her trainer would have to do something about it immediately if he wished her to fight on.

However, now that was completed, Philip could press on with his journey, or do anything he so wished; the choice was now in his hands. If he wanted to press on into the mist and fog, then so be it; the Murmur Valley would gladly accomodate another trainer on their journey.

"Great Job Blossom!" Philip cheered, rushing over to his pokemon. She was pretty hurt, so Philip quickly pulled out two potions from his bag to use on her. Buddy barked happily as Philip applied the healing items to Blossom. Blossom couldn't be more happy, as she had won probably their closest battle yet. Buddy was also in a good mood; he may not have thought up the perfect strategy but it worked.

"There we go," Philip murmured as he discarded the empty potions. Buddy pranced around him, causing a chuckle from his trainer. Blossom smiled too as she watched Buddy. The black dog soon stopped, having smelled something interesting, and Blossom joined in to inspect the mystery smell. Her nose was nearly as good, but it was good enough to do whatever they were doing.

"Okay, let's keep moving now!" Philip said cheerily. Beating the annoying Pidgey had definitely boosted his mood, and he really couldn't wait for his next encounter with someone or something else. It was one of those few times Philip thought he could conquer the world, and his pokemon sensed that, taking after Philip's good mood. And once again, they walked on in their usual formation: Buddy up ahead, scouting and sniffing whatever he felt like sniffing, and Blossom walking right next to Philip.

The smell that enticed the little puppy was certainly enough to lead him on to find something or another in the distance; it was a somehow familiar smell, but it was also very tempting. Somehow, there was something to be had up ahead and it would not be going unchecked this day! It would be a prize after the battle that had been fought, hard-won.

Of course, up ahead was the prize to be had, somewhere in the wet and mist; it wasn't too far from Buddy, who leapt off to go and find the thing that enticed his nose and bring it back to his trainer. It was after a few moments of scurrying about being led by his nose that the item was located, the Poochyena digging at the ground like most pups were apt to do and kicking up wet mud and silt about the place-- the ground of the Valley, after all, was rather wet-- before coming across the things.

It seemed that these items had been dropped by a trainer and the flowing sands of this place had buried them; without preamble, the pup picked them up and brought them to Philip triumphantly, who now had a Potion and a still-ripe Oran berry at his feet. Well, at least it was something for his troubles against that Pidgey, and now there was something for one of his Pokémon to hold in an emergency if he didn't just simply feed it to one of them. That was his choice, but now he could progress as before.

It was something, right?

"Great job, Buddy!" Philip beamed, greedily picking up the items at his feet. He then vigorously scratched Buddy's ears before regaining his composure. He smiled as he adjusted them in their respective backpack pouches. He deserved something after that Pidgey, right? Blossom seemed to agree, but eager to continue walking. She obviously wasn't content dilly-dallying like the group was; she wanted to get going.

Buddy on the other hand was pretty at ease now, strolling casually with his trainer. It was almost as if Blossom and Buddy had traded jobs: Blossom at the front, Buddy with Philip. Philip couldn't help but smile to himself as an overwhelming sense of pride washed over him.

He gazed contently at both his pokemon, each pretty cool in their own way. Blossom was calm yet strong and Buddy more of a doofus but still with a good heart. All three were in good spirits in spite of the battle thanks to the small stash Buddy had discovered.

It was strange, how things worked. One moment you were looking for things in the sod and the next minute you were trudging along through it without a care in the world. Fun, huh? This place, really, was actually kinda boring. There wasn't much to do out here, much less see; the fog made everything all kinda blurry, and that made the trip a little more challenging.

However, natural landmarks were rather visible when you came across them.

The rising slopes of a mountain could be made out visibly through the view-obscuring colloids, and as one stared through them, it was probably a welcome sight for eyes that had seen nothing but plains for a very, very long time. This place was thankfully on Philip's destination list, at least; the mists definitely rose up the mountain when one looked, and that meant only one thing:

Mount Fog.

Hooray, at last, a break in the monotony of trudging through watery soil and getting your shoes wet. Now for a complete change of pace and a climb up a mountain, where injuries would be even more severe! Excellent! It was definitely the highlight of anyone's day. Hopefully Philip had some climbing gear with him or this was gonna be tricky unless he could find a decent way up the mountain.

Unfortunately, Philip had the second of the two possible outcomes: no climbing gear whatsoever. Great. He took a minute to stand at the base of the giant mountain in front of him to decide how impossibly difficult this climb was going to be. Perhaps this wasn't the quickest way after all. Still, climbing over this mountain would probably be faster than going around.

"Well... Let's go," Philip stated simply.

So, with a great sigh he stepped ahead on what looked like the simplest route up. Mount Fog wasn't the largest mountain in the region, but it definitely wasn't the smallest. Blossom sighed, following along behind her trainer. Grass types like herself weren't known for their climbing abilities. Buddy, however, was a dog, and like many dogs he had pretty decent climbing skills. He was able to climb alongside Philip, though the harder path made it equally as hard for all three.

"At least now there's something to think about: how close we are to the top!" Philip joked, receiving no response from his pokemon. It wasn't a very good joke anyways. Besides, Buddy and Blossom were having a great time anyway chatting about the things pokemon chat about; they didn't need Philip's entertainment.

So... Philip had decided to go the longer and harder way of attempting to scale the mountain instead of attempting to find an easier route. That was fine - in fact, his bravery and willingness to throw himself head first into a challenge was to be commended.

Now, that said, when something comes to interrupt you and you're climbing without climbing gear, then you are obviously going to have some extreme problems in completing the task you are currently undertaking.

At the top of the nearest outcropping was a Bellsprout, standing there and looking down at the climbing trainer and his two Pokémon joining him. It was by no means an easy climb (though it could've been harder, to be entirely fair) and now there was something to stand in their way. However... it was actually just standing there. Not being menacing just yet. However, it was where you had to be to stop the climbing and get to the walking, for upon this outcropping was a pathway along the mountain. However, you had to get past the Bellsprout. It extended vines which hovered around its body, not... doing anything.

Now, that meant that something had to be done about this Bellsprout, whether it was taking it out in a battle by sending a companion on ahead or just by getting to to move. There were many ways to deal with this thing, all of them correct in their own way; it was now down to Philip's intuition as a trainer to solve the problem before him.

Philip had had enough battles for now, so he elected for peaceful negotiations. He stopped, catching his breath. The Bellsprout didn't seem mean or battle-ready; it was sort of just sitting there staring at nothing. This really puzzled the trainer. He had never seen a wild pokemon behave like this. There was Buddy, who had been overly nice and welcoming, the oddish and two poochyenas, which immediately started a battle. There was also the spearow, which were just creepy stalkers and the pidgey who found Philip hilarious. But none of them just sat there and did nothing. It was almost as if the Bellsprout was asleep. So, Philip decidsed to 'wake' him up.

"Um, hello?" Philip said uncertainly. He really had no idea what to think of this unusual predicament.

"We need to get by, so could you please move? You can go back after we get through.." He trailed off. Buddy and Blossom looked uneasy at this flower pokemon. There was just something weird about the grass pokemon, which Philip didn't hesitate to point out. In fact, he murmured that exact phrase to his pokemon, who seemed to discreetly hide a smile.

'We need to get by, so could you please move? You can go back after we get through...'

"Sprout?"

The head of the random Bellsprout turned a little at the human's words, wondering what was just said. He'd never encountered a human before, and this was a very strange thing to be seeing, not to mention he had Pokémon with him. What could that possibly mean?

It didn't look like a Pokémon. But if it had Pokémon with it... oh no. They were coming to invade its home on the cliff. Oh no. This was very, very bad. No, no, it needed its home! It didn't want to be eaten by the big scary monsters like its parents were! That was also very, very bad!

"Sproooooout!"

And then, without any kind of preamble, the Bellsprout picked up the nearest large rock it could find with its vines and pitched it right at Philip.

What?

Yes. There was now a large rock headed for Philip, who was holding on to the edge by his hands, which... put him in a rather dangerous position. Something was going to have to be done about the rock and the Bellsprout, or so it seemed, because... hurtling rocks at face is a very bad thing to be under. Somehow he was going to have to stop the rock from hitting it, or avoid gravity mocking humanity once again with its indomitable forces. Hoo, boy, now this one's a doozy, ain't it?

Also: Rocks fall. Does anyone die?

"A-... Oh crap," Philip stared in horror as the giant boulder came hurtling towards him. Okay, no need to panic. Scratch that. Deadly rock hurtling at you when you have no way to move in time while hanging on the side of a mountain is something to be panicked about. Crap. Umm. Crap.

"Okay Buddy, go around and try to tackle it's side, and Blossom if you can get around in time tackle it also, just enough to get it's course to shift. I'll try and scoot over the opposite way, but I can't make any promises," Philip said at near lightning speed. He had told Buddy the plan first since Buddy was a much better climber that either of his companions, and it'd be him if anybody who'd be able to move the rock over. Still, it wasn't likely, so Philip had decided to move. Smart, right?

Either way, Philip wasn't exactly happy with the Bellsprout, either because it had just killed/seriously injured Philip, or it had gotten pretty darn close. Both weren't ideal, and now Philip wanted more than anything to get up to the safety of the path.

[No Kecleons will die though because a certain someone is too lazy to re-roleplay it's death, so he's just pretending it disapeared and it never existed xD]

The main problem... was that now there was a rock flying for Philip's head. Perhaps he had forgotten the concept of gravity, or that talking took a long time to accomplish when you wanted to be understood. Yes. That was definitely a problem when there was a rock flying at your head.

Said rock collided with said head mid-sentence.

Now, this would of course mean that Philip first had a bruise or a concussion at the very least. Right then. Next came the whiplash from having his head snapped back, and then came the unconscious state from impact, which led him to release his grip on the rocks he was holding on and fall all the way back to where he'd started. Ouch, yeah, painful stuff. His Pokémon would probably have to clamber down to meet him at the bottom of the mountain.

Fortunately he didn't end up seriously injured, actually. The worst he had was bruises and maybe some minor fractures which were going to make it hard to walk, but that could've just been some soreness from falling off. He was rather lucky - he fell onto a tree growing out and it kinda slowed his fall, even if it did give some cuts on the way down. At least he was going to wake up and be able to climb again. Tomorrow, anyways. Today was just right out. Camping at the base of the mountain seemed logical.

But yeah. No more climbing today. Bellsprout, 1; Philip, 0. Another way was going to be more prudent. And the lesson of the day: Don't talk so much.

Ouch. Philip landed with a thud, laying on the ground for a few moments. What an annoying Bellsprout. Okay, now what? Philip was way to sore to even think about climbing the mountain again, especially now that it was beginning to grow dark outside. The sun was already setting; not nearly enough to time to even go around the mountain. Which meant only one thing: camping out.

Philip was pretty excited about the prospect, as this would be the first time he spend the night in the wilderness. Before, he had arrived at Rose Town just in time to sleep; now he'd be out here with only his pokemon and minimal food. Buddy and Blossom now came down, bounding ahead to ensure that their trainer was alright. They had taken the hard way down: not falling on their face and looking stupid.

"Hey, I'm alright, just a little sore," Philip reassured them, causing the anxious looks on their faces to melt away. He couldn't help but feel safe with his pokemon. Already they were very close to him, and he knew that they could only grow closer. He finally stood up, still shaky from the fall. Okay, not really anything else to do but set up camp.

"We'll be sleeping here," Philip commented, indicating a spot under a tree. He wanted some protection, and the tree was better than nothing. He proceeded to roll out his sleeping bag, and get a fire started. It was definitely a good thing that he had decided to pack matches with him, or they'd be sleeping in the cold. Eventually there was nothing left to do, so he proceeded to sit down with his pokemon to eat a well earned meal and get some rest. So eat and rest they did.

And so, one more day passed. Well-nourished and rested, the party was once more able to attempt scaling the gigantic terror that was Mount Fog, this time perhaps more aware of the dangers that lurked within this place. Well. A Bellsprout wasn't really a terror, but since Philip was kinda a new trainer, it could have been. At least he wasn't chasing down an Onix that had kidnapped an Ursaring or letting Arcanines steal his Pokéballs. Anyway!

So after trying to climb the same way that he did before, which was actually a pretty good idea in hindsight, he did so. And... well, there wasn't the Bellsprout this time! So yeah. Now Philip had made it to the place where he was wanting to go yesterday before the plant smashed him in the head with a falling rock.

Right. So. This area that Philip had made it to.

It wasn't too strange - a flat area surrounded by various rocks, the ground covered with dust and dirt and relatively solid for it was a rock base, with the occasional large rock on the ground to sit on or stand on or whatever tickled one's fancy. And there was still no Bellsprout. Yes. That was a very important thing.

Now, this place had two paths leading from it - one was a slight slope that curled around towards the right and could be followed with the eyes easily, while the path to the left was a higher incline that vanished quickly away from sight. Either of those paths seemed like a good option, really, for none of them didn't present any obvious danger-- obvious certainly being the key word in that sentence. There were probably other options if Philip sat there and put his mind to it.

But where the hell was that Bellsprout?

Okay, now Philip was right back where it had all gone wrong. Only this time, there was no angry Bellsprout. Good. The plateau seemed fine enough; two paths, a few rocks and such. There was nothing very interesting about this spot at all, now that Philip thought about it. The only thing he could really do was start walking randomly on one of the paths.

So, he did just that, taking a step towards the left path.

"I'm thinking.. left," Philip stated. It seemed more mysterious and exciting. Plus, he thought the Bellsprout would be there, and he wanted revenge for yesterday. He was still sore all over from the fall. Blossom and Buddy walked next to him obediently, as if they didn't want to leave him in this weakened state.

Philip of course didn't mind this. In fact, he was pleased that all three of them were talking together for once. Normally Buddy was ahead, but not this time. It was as if the black dog sensed his trainer's pain, and Buddy wanted to give moral support to relieve some of that pain.

Left it was!

The path snaked around the mountain very quickly before vanishing out of view, as may have been previously intimated, and probably left a sense of foreboding. To want to go in that direction purely to enact vengeance on the Bellsprout was probably a bad idea, because at this point that thing was long gone and wasn't going to be there.

Whoopsie. Remember, kids, revenge is bad.

By following the path, one would quickly come to a cave. A very dark cave, in fact, for there seemed to be no end in sight and there was no light filtering in from the east, blocked by cave walls. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to have come here after all, but now it was too late, as there was progress into the cave's black depths...

Eventually, there was the sound of... something moving. It didn't seem like much to start with, but there was a definite consistent padding sound across the rocky cave floor getting closer.. and closer. It actually sounded like many things-- like multiple legs-- coming towards Philip. And in this darkness, with no light available... what was it?

Creepy, I know. But that was the price for not going right, and taking the safer way. And, hey, who knew what it could be? Would the reaction be to stay still, wait for it, pre-emptively attack it... so many possibilities.

Oh, great. Now this had all the elements of a horror movie. Creepy setting? Check. Pitch blackness? Check. Stranger in darkness? Check. This was all perfect, all that was needed now was for there to be a murder, which Philip wasn't about to let happen. Plus, the stranger was most likely a pokemon, as a human would have spoken by now, right?

"Hello?" Philip called out, just to make sure. Of course whatever it was probably wouldn't respond, but he figured it couldn't hurt trying. Plus, if anything went wrong Buddy and Blossom would be there to protect him. Maybe it'd be a awesome rare cave pokemon that he could catch! That'd be a pretty cool find.

Buddy and Blossom stood in front of Philip guardedly, their senses all focused on the mystery pokemon. Buddy's nose was working amazingly fast, and he probably knew what pokemon was approaching them. But, he had no way whatsoever to sharing this information with Philip, so he didn't even bother.

Philip stared in awe at the little worm pokemon. That was quite a big letdown. Here had been, dreaming of some awesome person or wild pokemon appearing, and all it was was a simple Wurmple. Great. Philip really wanted to get whatever had to be done with the pokemon over with quickly, so he decided to go with the cheap strategy.

"Blossom, Buddy, follow me," Philip said annoyed, and then simply turned around and walked towards the entrance of the cave. But then again, it could provide some easy experience for his pokemon. I mean, how difficult could beating a Wurmple be? He paused for a moment, looking at his two pokemon.

"Okay, nevermind. How about we make this a quick battle? Both of you versus that little worm over there?" Philip asked his pokemon. Sure, it may not be the most moral thing to do, but oh well. Not everybody is a saint, just some are more saintly than others. And right now, Philip was being one of those others.

"So, Blossom start out with a razor leaf and growl, and Buddy you can use a howl, followed by tackle," Philip instructed calmly. He wasn't too worried about this battle being difficult.

Turned out that Wurmple wasn't such a pushover in the dark.

With no light being afforded to the team that Philip had out, it was difficult for them to adapt so quickly; however, the Wurmple was having no such problems in its natural habitat and was undoubtedly going to attack the foes that came for it first. It was quick to race in and deliver a crushing poison-barbed strike towards the Chikorita that dared assail it with leaves - leaves that were, by and large, nothing more than a nuisance for the little worm, for they simply rushed by him and missed in the darkness.

The Poochyena, however, had a little more luck; with its howling well on the way, the mutt rushed in and delivered a full-bodied tackle at the Wurmple, which hurt it reasonably well. However, that did not mean it was not up for a little revenge; huge glops of webbing flayed out towards the Poochyena in an effort to tangle it up and to buy the worm some more precious time to fight back.

However, this was not all; as the toxins were particularly useful on Blossom, they set into its bloodstream and made it sick under its effects, poisoning the Grass-type easily. This was an unfortunate event of battle, where the poor Chikorita was at a disadvantage; despite it being potentially stronger than the Wurmple, it had decisive advantages over its foe that it would not hesitate to make use of. After all, there were two Pokémon in front of it; why not fight like it meant it in order to get these strange beings and this human out of its home? They were the ones intruding on his territory and by Lugia he would not stand for it.

Indeed, it actually seemed that, despite his current injuries, the Wurmple was doing particularly well. How strange was that?

As soon as the first round was over, Philip could already tell this was going to be harder than he thought. His pokemon were getting beaten by a Wurmple. This was definitely not good. The Razor Leaf had missed, a problem that could easily be solved with Magical Leaf, so Philip really didn't worry about coming up with a strategy for Blossom at the moment.

Buddy, on the other hand, required more complex ideas. Something like.. a Crunch would probably work well, since the Wurmple was already moderately injured. Blossom was too of course, but she had Buddy's help, and the help of the Pecha Berry Phillip was now offering her.

While the Chikorita was running towards him, Philip thought it best to get the Poochyena to hold off the Wurmple for a minute or so.

"Okay Buddy, use Crunch!" Philip called out.

"Chi!" Blossom thanked her trainer gratefully.

"Okay, when you get back out there use a Magical Leaf this time, okay?" Philip instructed. Hopefully both attacks would hit, probably beating or nearly beating the Wurmple so they could get out of the cave.

However, it looked like the Wurmple had decided to chase Blossom down, even as she devoured the Pecha Berry. Once more, since it had been so effective last time, the poisonous barbs were readied for the Grass-type to suffer from, and once more a heady assault using those pointy bits were made use of. After all, it worked once, could it work again in an equally decisive strike?

Yes. Yes it could, in fact.

Despite the use of the Pecha Berry, most of the damage had been done by the poison barbs and not the actual poison itself on Blossom's part - another hit from them was actually enough to knock her out, but only just. Really, to have underestimated the little Wurmple after it had worked so hard to defend its territory and to think a quick two-on-one battle was so easy as to be presumptuous about it was an extremely newbie mistake. Philip would definitely be taking a lesson home with this one.

However, the Poochyena had a little more luck. Managing to get at least a little of the string off its body, he crossed the battlefield to the fallen Blossom's side, sprinting the length as best he could before dropping his teeth into the Wurmple, who flinched heavily from the attack and lost its concentration on what it was doing. It, too, was now heavily injured, almost at fainting point but not quite, as the Poochyena continued its assault. It had taken one of its foes; maybe a second could be taken if he made use of the darkness.

Maybe. It was a big risk to be taking.

Aw Crap. Philip returned Blossom to her pokeball, stunned. This was the first time he'd actually had a pokemon faint. Their previous battle with Pidgey had been a close one, but Blossom didn't actually faint in that one. Now, she was completely useless; almost as if she was temporarily dead. Philip was pretty annoyed at this stupid caterpillar that shouldn't even be this hard to beat anyways.

"Okay Buddy, finish it off with crunch and bite!" Philip said angrily. Buddy too was devastated that his battling partner was gone; now who would he get to battle with? Nobody, that's who. Unless of course Philip caught this Wurmple [which was very unlikely] or some other pokemon they encountered.

"Pi!" Buddy growled menacingly. He almost immediately began charging at the Wurmple, preparing to sink his teeth into the pink pokemon's flesh. That Wurmple was going down, and nothing was going to stop Buddy now.

It was, in essence, a foregone conclusion that the Wurmple would be taken out this turn. However, it was a fast little thing for one reason; Poochyena was slower for the sheer fact it was still coated in the sticky, stringy web that the Wurmple had doused it in earlier. As such, the Wurmple was the faster attacker in this case, dashing in once more with prepared poisonous barbs. Those things were certainly seeing a lot of use.

The Wurmple made a full-bodied attack with the barbs, hitting into Buddy-- but, unlike the first hit on Blossom, Buddy did not suffer the effects of the poison's longer-lasting side-- and causing him some pain. However, as teeth bit down into the worm, it coiled up and then sank to the rocky ground in defeat after that battle. Its last thought was simply that he had taken one with him, which was a pleasant thing to be thinking about, generally.

However, it left Philip with one less team member to navigate this cave with, and that was going to be extremely difficult. Could he survive the rest of the journey using only Buddy in an area that was potentially dangerous? Truly a concern.

However, it seemed that there were no more distractions, so that Philip could move deeper into the cave with his sole remaining team member. Now the trek became more difficult, and if he could not handle its rigors, then turning back, after all of that progress, was perhaps the only option left to him. Would he press on into the deep darkness of the cave before him? Time would tell, perhaps.

"Great work Buddy!" Philip smiled as the Wurmple collapsed. Buddy seemed happy with himself as he should have been, in spite of Blossom's loss. It wasn't that horrible, now that he thought about it. Once they got to a town, they'd be able to revive her and she'd be with them once again.

Anyways, Philip vigorously rubbed Buddy's head before heading into the deeper areas of the cave. Hopefully it'd come out the other side, because Philip really didn't feel like retracing his steps so far back. As they got deeper, it got darker, obviously. He soon found himself tripping and rubbing against walls more often in the darkness, which began to get on his nerves.

"Augh! This is miserable!" Philip complained loudly. It wasn't uncommon for Philip to be grumpy and therefore very easy to irritate. Which this cave did a very good job doing.

Miserable? It... really was, when one thought about it. A lonely existence inside a cave with almost zero light filtering in from the only entrance in sight, all kinds of walls, rocks, stalagmites and stalactites to bump into, and the general disorientation of not knowing where you were or where you'd end up once you were free of this cave-- if you were ever free of it. Philip's sentiments perhaps had some grounding, yes.

However, that was not all to the whole thing. As one walked along, the floor started to get wet.

Wait a second. Wet?

Yes. Wet. Were one to reach down and touch the ground-- which Philip probably wouldn't do, since it wouldn't occur to most people in this darkness-- it was now officially starting to be covered in mud and water, alternating occasionally; the floor was getting rather slippery and ahead there was now a definite sound of slowly-running water. What the heck was going on in this place?

With no way of knowing where the sound was coming from and no way to see, there were two choices; press on through the darkness or give turning around and going back a shot. What was occurring seemed interesting enough, if not a little creepy; without the light to guide him, Philip would likely find himself in a particularly tight spot with this whole ordeal, considering there was the remote possibility of drowning in a large pool of water he wasn't expecting.

Danger lurks at every corner, after all.

Philip was being very persistent in his exploration of the cave. He paused for a moment as the sound of a trickling stream reached his ears. He couldn't tell where it was from, so he continued walking. If he hadn't of heard it until now, it seemed logical that it had to be coming from deeper in the cave. Besides, a stream would probably lead outside or somewhere interesting.

"Well, this is boring," Philip stated simply. Buddy trotted along nonchalantly. There weren't nearly as many interesting smells in a cave compared to a forest. Plus, there were a lot more creepy crawlies and the like here. It just wasn't as friendly, if you could call a place friendly.

Anyway, they continued walking along in quiet, listening only to the faint sound of water and their footsteps echoing in the cave. Not fun at all.

Getting closer, there was evidently a dark shape in the ground, one that was clearly attached to the sound that had been emanating from the cave. What it was turned out to be reasonably simple on the surface; an underground spring that was very likely full of clean water; if it wasn't, chances were it was only slightly muddy but could, with a little effort, still be made safe to drink. It was not still water, meaning that it was very likely safe, in fact.

There was but one thing about the pool. This close, the movement of water could be heard such that it was clear that there was a break in it, like the water was flowing aorund something, but it wasn't supposed to be there; likely something large and sticking out of the water that someone else had dropped trying to navigate this cave.

One ray of hope lay in the distance, however, should one peer down the corridor of stone and rock - there was a very faint source of light, enough to signal that there was natural sunlight streaming in through it. The exit to this horrendous cave was actually close! So close it could be seen to an extent, and that meant freedom from this place.

Once more, a choice lay before Phillip - to examine the unknown depths of the water, that sound alone could never discern the true identity of, or make a break for the exit of the cave that seemed so close to hand. Choices were never a fun thing, and this was evidently going to be no different.

Philip couldn't possibly care less about what was in the water. Probably some trash left behind by a careless explorer, or simply just a rock. His and Buddy's minds were too focused on getting out of this cave to worry about it anyway, because there was light! Sunlight, faintly visible that Philip found himself walking at a quick pace towards.

Buddy, however, was more intent on getting out of this cave. Sure, he had better cave-vision than his owner, but he still hated it here. He sprinted ahead, eager to taste the fresh air and feel the warmth of the sunlight on his fur. He had enough of caves for a long time.

"Hold up!" Philip laughed, now jogging to catch up with his pokemon. Dogs of course could run better, and Philip soon found himself unable to keep up. He was able to keep Buddy in his line of sight, easing his worries a little. The last thing he needed was for his only usable pokemon to get lost.

Philip actually had missed out on something good, but in his earnest he wasn't turning back. Oh well.

The running Poochyena carried Philip a long way. Such a long way, in fact, that coming out of the cave had the best effect possible; to the left of the cave's exit could be seen the city of Brightopolis, and directly ahead the dirtlands that led to the city. It was almost upon them to get to Bright, so close was it - it was now well within reach!

Buddy was safe, at least, and he'd also done something else good in his ambling and want to be away from that place; he'd run across a dirt pathway down the mountain that was reasonably easy to traverse, with only a few loose rocks here and there which allowed the trainer to get down to the bottom of Mount Fog with ease. He'd finally done it. He'd gotten through that horrid mountain with only a few minor mishaps.

Now, however, there was just one thing between Philip and Brightopolis - the obscenely wet dirt that made up the area that all travellers had to get through to reach the gigantic city and in addition, the Upper Shelf. It did mean that it wouldn't be too long until Philip reached his destination, however; a lot of focus and swift movement would be the key to all of this, and that meant possibly ignoring everything on his path.

Just how determined was Philip to reach Brightopolis soonest?

Being able to see your goal in front of you provides a huge increase in motivation; especially when that goal is a warm meal, comfy bed, and a nice rest. Philip couldn't help but hide his joy as he began running ahead to g- what the heck is this? The entire field was like... mud. Duh, why do you think they named it Soggy Dirt?

"Ugh. This is gonna be a pain to cross," Philip complained, his happiness quickly fading away into dismal boredom. Now, he walked slowly, planning each step carefully to avoid a face plant in the disgusting ground. With each step he took he sunk into this muck. It was going to be a long trek to Brightopolis.

Buddy didn't seem to have nearly as much trouble as his trainer due to his much lighter weight, and that weight was being distributed among four points instead of two. In fact, Philip could barely tell whether Buddy was even having trouble crossing this stuff. Lucky him.

"Maybe there's some sort of walkway.." Philip trailed off, now turning around in hopes of finding some easier way to get to the city up ahead. He really didn't want to deal with this.

Oh, how difficult it was to walk across sodden dirt! Unfortunately for the trainer and his pooch-like companion, there were no walkways to be had, no respite from the unending mud (insofar as an area bordered by mountains and eventually grasslands and the sea could be considered unending) and all the joys of getting mud and dirt and water in one's shoes.

Oh yes. That was the challenge here: to deal with how infinitely uncomfortable it was going to be to walk in this place. Pray that it never had to happen again.

However long the walking had to be in order to reach the bustling metropolis that was so very much a worthy goal to be aiming for, it was going to be over soon. That was evidently a driving thought for this kind of process, lest one lose their minds to the madness that would undoubtedly take hold here. Walking through this crap was very likely unbearable... and gumboots were probably in order next time one had to cross this place.

Sure enough, after a long enough walk through the mud, the city of Brightopolis could be seen in the extreme distance; it was getting far closer, and wouldn't be long now until the journey was over. There was but one thing in the way of that, though. Overhead, there was one floating Taillow, looking down at the trainer, wondering whether it was friend, foe or food. It didn't seem to want to attack, but was it worth being distracted by the bird, or trekking on to Brightopolis, even if it was so close one was guaranteed to reach it?

Ugh. There was no way Philip could ever be forced into walking through this place again without a decent pair of boots, especially with the added knowledge that there in face were no decent paths and/or trails to use when crossing this area. Philip wondered how anybody could get through here; but then again, he was getting through here so it couldn't be too hard.

Just then, he spotted the curious looking Taillow floating above him and Buddy. Actually, it was Buddy who spotted the bird first, and he barked to the bird happily, as if inviting her to play. He was a very friendly Poochyena compared to most of the species, after all.

"Hey! Wanna play a game?" The black dog asked the Taillow. He was getting pretty bored, as Philip wasn't in the mood to play games. Besides, the bird didn't seem mean since it didn't immediately attack, but it wasn't being the friendliest thing either. Still, what reason did it have for not wanting to play?

The bird did, in fact, want to play a game! It chirruped happily at Buddy's suggestion, floating itself downwards towards the Poochyena as it began to fly circles around it in a long series of arcs, then began to fly off towards Brightopolis at high speed. Evidently it wanted to play tag with Buddy.

Of course, the Taillow was also leading them to the big city, which was rather nice of it.

The path that it followed was even more muddy than before; possibly because so many feet had trodden it and squelched the mud more. That was unfortunate, but unavoidable; people did need to get to the metropolis at some point. Philip would likely not enjoy the prospect of following the two Pokémon through the mud, even if they simply didn't care about the way they were going, only that they were having fun.

However, the deeper the mud, the closer it was to Brightopolis... before the mud began to peter off. There were even trees growing around here at this point, ones that Pokémon could make nests in. And after a gruelling game of tag, in which the Taillow won (barely, and got tagged twice), it returned to its nest in one of the trees along the way.

The bird did not come without a gift for being so kind to it, however; it plucked off a berry from the top of the tree and dropped it down towards the grasses below, nice and easy for Philip to pick up, even if it had just a little bit of mud on it. Oh well - there was something for him, and the mud could be wiped off. At least Buddy'd had some fun along the way. Not to mention he'd survived the entire trip and done some amazing things on his own - wow, he was one happy pooch from that ordeal.

However, at the bottom of the mud-plains, just down yonder, was Brightopolis - finally, the goal was reached. Philip, despite being covered in mud, falling down a mountain, having one of his Pokémon knocked out and eventually walking through mud that in some places got knee-deep, had reached the biggest town in Opaddeka.

Whew. Food and a shower definitely seemed good.

Philip put the berry in his bag and was happy. Then he walked into town. Yay.
