“Oy, ’Nain! Did you nick my phone?” “Edward, how many times do I have to tell you, it’s Egrinain! E-gri-nain! Why is it no-one can say a name longer than two syllables?” “And I’ve told you, it’s Eddie, not Edward! Now where’s my phone?” “How should I know?!” “Alright, SHUT IT you two!” Egrinain’s mother yelled as she stormed into the hallway from the living room. Eddie shifted uncomfortably at the bottom of the stairs. Their mother came to the bottom of the stairwell, hands on her hips and called up to the bedrooms. “You hear me, Egrinain? Next time your brother asks a question, come down the stairs instead of yelling across the house – you know I get a splitting headache whenever you two yell.” “Kay” Egrinain said, in a slightly quieter tone. Her mother softened slightly. “Thank-you” she said, turning to leave. “Same goes for you, Edward” she said to Eddie as she went past. “Mu-um, it’s Eddie!” “Headache!” she replied, waving her hands around her head as she went back into the living room. Eddie scuffed his feet at the carpet and mumbled for a bit. Finally, he climbed the stairs and walked down the hallway to Egrinain’s door. “So, you haven’t seen my phone?” he said, knowing better than to come into her room without permission. “Duh” Egrinain replied, her voice easily piercing through the noise from her dilapidated stereo. “Why are you so snappy today?” Eddie replied. There was a pause; then the music died down, and Egrinain opened the door, poking her head round at her brother. “You know what day it is today, right?” she asked him. “Uhh… Thursday?” “No, it’s Friday. And that means?...” “Uum… hockey practice?” he guessed. Egrinain hung her head and gave a mock groan. “Do the words ‘Pokemon Trainer’ ring a bell?” “Aaah, right, your starting pokemon – wait that’s next Friday, isn’t it?” “No, it’s today” Egrinain replied, leaving the door and heading back into her room. “And I’m getting all my stuff sorted. And I’m changing the password on my computer, so you’ll have to steal someone else’s bandwidth to play Typhlosion Wars III on.” “Aw, come on!” Eddie protested. “No-one else has a spare computer that can run it!” “Well then, tough” Egrinain replied, picking up her backpack and fitting it onto her shoulders. “Stop ringing all your gamer friends for a while, and save up enough Zeni to get your own PC.” “Well, I’m gonna have to stop if I don’t find my phone…” Eddie grumbled. Egrinain came out and shut the door behind her with a click. Looking at Eddie properly, she smirked. “Checked your pockets?” she asked in dry amusement. Eddie’s hands flew to his pockets, and quickly found the prominent rectangular bulge of a cellphone in his trousers. Flushing bright red as Egrinain waltzed past him to the stairs, Eddie mumbled something incoherent and wandered over to his room. ______________ “Don’t I get a goodbye?” Egrinain’s mother asked as Egrinain dashed down the stairs and across the hall. “Whoops, sorry Mum” she said, coming to a stop and walking up to the living room entryway. Her mother tilted her head sideways, giving a kind smile. “Good luck” she said, opening her arms and giving Egrinain a gentle hug. Egrinain returned it, smiling warmly. “Thanks” she said quietly, standing there for a few seconds. “Perrr?” Egrinain looked down at the family pet Tacroy, a well-fed Persian, who was rubbing up against Egrinain’s legs. “Hello, Tacroy” she said, bending down and scratching him behind the ears. Tacroy responded by flopping down, closing his eyes and stretching luxuriantly on the floor. “PUurrrUurrrUurrrsian” he went, playfully batting at Egrinain’s hand with his front paws. Egrinain smiled, carefully extricating her hand, before she turned and walked over to the door. Opening it with a little tinkle of the doorbell, she turned and waved cheerily. “Bye” she called back, and stepped outside ______________ Once Egrinain was out of the gate, she stopped and took a deep breath. Despite the fact that she’d been gearing up for this for several months, she was still nervous about the prospect of going solo. Alright, it wasn’t like she’d never camped out alone before, but still… Egrinain brushed a few stray hairs out of her eyes, unshouldering her backpack and looking inside to check all the important stuff was there. “Don’t seem to be missing anything.” She said to herself. “Well, on to the Lab, I guess…” Egrinain closed up the bag, slipped the straps back over her shoulders, and turned to head down the street in the direction of the Pokemon Lab. |
