The sudden involuntary spasm of her arm caused the eyeliner to stab rather painfully into her left eye, and Lana gritted her teeth to stifle a quiet moan. Her eye had closed tightly, and it watered as she reluctantly forced it open to survey the damage. A few spots of dark eyeliner clung to the watery orb.
She kept her eye open to prevent the foreign elements from sliding up behind the eyelid, wetted a piece of soft toilet paper, and brought it up to remove the stains, praying that her arm would remain steady this time.
The paper went down the toilet, and Lana resumed her beautification process, dabbling just a bit of blush on each of her cheeks, before standing back to survey the work. Her eye was still watering, but the eyeliner remained where it should.

The smell of pancakes wafted through the air, and Lana smiled faintly. Torrin had late-night work, and it was hard on him to get up after only a few hours of sleep, but however much time they had spent with each other the day before, he probably weren't going to let her go off without a last goodbye kiss. And the kids ...
A sad, slightly worried frown appeared on her forehead as she washed bits of makeup off her hands. Either they were being quiet on purpose, or they were not in the house; none of them would be sleeping this late unless they were sick. She had expected them to be there to say goodbye. It was going to be hard heading off without a last hug from both of them.

Turning about, she left the toilet and started down the staircase, stopping on the middle of peek into the kitchen where Torrin stood, his hazel-brown hair in it's usual mess, completely absorbed in his cooking. After a few moments, he started whistling a little tune.
Lana stood still and drank in the sight of him. This was the man that she had married, still as sweet and innocent-looking as always.

"How I am going to miss your arms around me at night ..." she said with a smile, mostly to herself. The whistling stopped and Torrin turned his head to flash her a boyish smile.

"Not nearly as much as I will miss your magic touch, wife," he replied warmly, and took the last pancake off the fire. "You've gotten me addicted to oit; it's going to be hard without your massaging." He poured syrup over the mountain of pancakes that stood on the kitchen counter, and started serenading in an exaggerated high tone.

" .. and the sky will never be as blu-uue without yoo-ou ..."

Lana shook her head, smiling at him; oh yes, he was still the same. And he was happy the way he was, with his life. Unlike her. Why can't I be happy with what Providence has granted me? She had been luckier than most, she was sure of that. Married to the most caring man that the sun had ever shone upon, with two lively children that seemed to have inherited the best from them both. Why was she even leaving?

Almost as if on cue, her arm started involuntarily shaking again, and she stared at it wordlessly. It was her answer alright, and it was only the early symptoms of the disease that was eating at her from inside. It had started as just a few jitters, then grown to downright spasming before she had gathered herself together enough to seek help. The doctor had been unable to help her, though; there was nothing that could be done about this problem. No cure or help, medical, surgical or otherwise. It would take time, but eventually that shaking would spread to her legs, her other arm, her spine. It would leave her crippled and resigned to spending the rest of her life in a wheelchair before it was done with her. She had to see more of the world, had to walk beneath the sun while she was still capable of standing on her own legs.

"Lana? Are you alright?"

The worried note in Torrin's voice caused her to look up, and the grief that was painted in his face took her breath away. Not grief for himself, bound to a woman that would someday turn into a cripple and would need his help for everything. She would not have blamed him if he felt that way; she would not have blamed him if it had been reason enough to make him leave her. But Torrin Mecura was not that kind of person, and every ounch of grief and worry he felt was directed at her. She could feel her heart melting into a little pool of love, a warm spot inside her that spread throughout her body. She could almost believe that love strong enough to fight the infection that harrowed her body.

He noticed the change in her face and his own smile returned as he held up the heavy plate that wafted with such heavenly smells. "Pancakes?"

Lana released a small chuckle as she jumped down the last stairs and followed with him to the table, further ruffling up his unruly mane. She took a seat next to him, and stabbed her fork into two pancakes, lifting them to her own plate. "Where are Liah and Sera, Torrin? I had expected them here with you ... "

Her husband immediately became all too interested in his food, showing obviously that he was avoiding meeting her eyes. "Ehh .. I'm not sure, actually. They left early, saying they had something to do."

So they were avoiding her ... or were they? Why was Torrin behaving like he was hiding something? Were they angry at her? She was confused; she had gotten the impression that they approved of her decision; a bit envious that they wouldn't be allowed to go just yet themselves, but approving of it. What had changed?
The pancakes suddenly tasted bland instead of divine, and she ate mechanically while wondering if she should hold off the journey awhile longer. She would have to if they did not show up soon; she could not leave before saying goodbye and clearing everything out with her children.

Finishing the food, she pushed the plate away and straightened up, giving Torrin a fleeting kiss on the cheek. "I'm going to go looking for them. This may have to wait a month or so ... it has to wait. I shouldn't have been thinking about leaving before sending them off on their own journey; it was a rather selfish idea, wasn't it ..."

Torrin stood up as well but he did not say a word; his face was an expressionless mask as he watched Lana leave the kitchen and open the front door .. once he was sure she would not suddenly turn around and see, his face started twitching with hidden laughter.

Lana made it three steps outside before realizing she had walked into an ambush. Two bundles of flailing arms came running from each their side, and hurled themselves at her; Lana just had time to step back and lean herself in against the wall so they wouldn't knock her over, and then both girls were hugging her fiercely and laughingly describing the expression that had been on her face a moment before.

"You were gaping like .. like a Magikarp that had been drawn on land, mom," Liah giggled against her shoulder.

"She was gaping more than that," Sera reasoned jokingly. "Any Magikarp would have unhinged it's jaws gaping like that. Oh mom, we're going to miss you! You better call home often ..."

"You're going to need a pokemon, mom," Liah added with an eager note in her voice. "Which do you think it'll be? I would pick Ponyta myself if I could ... "

"Leave your mother alone, you two lunatics," Torrin said as he stepped outside as well, grinning at her. "Sorry, Lana, but they insisted on laying in wait out here. Said they had something for you."

"Oh yeah, mom, stay here ... don't move." Sera said as she loosened her hold and stepped back, sharing a knowing smile with her sister. Then she darted off behind the house, leaving Liah standing with the air of a prison warden watching that Lana did not follow.

"I have something for you, too," Torrin murmured as he leaned closer; his eyes had a devillish glow in them as he smiled. Lana smiled back and folded her hands behind his head, drawing him closer; their lips met in a passionate, hungry kiss that lasted awhile.
Torrin slipped something heavy into her hands during it.

"Oh, cut it out, you two," Sera said with a mock disgusted tone as she came back, holding a neatly wrapped box in her hands, which she held up for Lana to take. "It's for you, mom ... Liah and I pooled in some of our allowance for it."

Lana smiled lovingly at her daughter as she pocketed the pouch that Torrin had given her; it was ringing of coin. Had he been saving up without her knowledge? However had he managed that? He never had been good at keeping secrets.
She reached out and accepted the box that Sera held out; it was a touching gesture. Both Lana and Liah wanted one each of the new collection of pokemon dolls that had been released, and buying her a gift would have set them back quite a bit on the process of being able to afford it. But a gift was a gift.

She held the box in her left hand and with her right snaked her arm around Sera's back, pushing her in against her chest to hug her back, then drew Liah closer for the same hug afterwards, and smiled up towards Torrin afterwards. He smiled back warmly.

They went back inside together to watch Lana unpack her gifts.
