Entering from The Dustlands

Tyke's bark finally drew Jim's attention from his conversation with Gypsy. Looking around, he was genuinely surprised to note that their group had now left the dusty plains of the Dustlands behind them and had entered the Moorfeldt Grasslands. There was less difference than Jim had expected, but it was certainly alot greener than he was used to.

Smiling as he gazed out at the unfamiliar landscape, he spoke to his team.

"Alright guys and gals, this is it. Lets see if we can get ya some battle experience, eh?"

He stepped forward through the grass, taking his time, eyes trained intently on the landscape on the lookout for a suitable battle.

A trainer who didn't keep their Pokemon within their Pokeballs was a rare sight indeed, and very few existed. However, Jim, it seemed, was one of that rare breed of trainer, and while there were plenty of benefits to be gained from letting your Pokemon loose, there were also some problems with it. One problem, was something like this:

A loud cry came from the trainer and his small party's right, and out of a patch of long grass there came a purple streak, charging straight for one particular creature. "Rattata!" it cried with surprising ferocity for something as small as it was, crashing straight into Tyke and sending the two of them rolling a few metres to the left. The little rat snarled as it bit into the Zigzagoon's flesh, trying to cause as much damage as possible. Now, what the hell was going on here? Unbeknownst to Jim and his Pokemon, this Rattata belonged to a small sect of the general Rattata populations in the grasslands, who were at constant war with another similar group of Zigzagoon. No one knew when they began to fight in such a way, but the feud has always existed. No one knows why it started, how it started, or if it will ever end. As such, the normal Zigzagoon and Rattata in this area had long since moved away, since living here was quite dangerous when you weren't directly involved in the feud, but you could get caught in the crossfire. Which was exactly what was happening to poor Tyke now. He obviously had no part of the feud, yet, the Rattata saw a Zigzagoon in its territory, and automatically attacked.

Jim head whirled round as soon as he heard the wild Pokemon's ferocious cry, fists clenched and ready to battle. Though he cursed himself for allowing the Rattata to sneak up on them undetected, a fight like this was exactly what he and his team'd been looking for. It looked like Tyke was first up to show what he was capable of.

"Tyke, Pin Missile, now! Get him to back off of ya" He cried, hoping the flurry of spines (and Tyke's fierceness) would be able to put some distance between the two pokemon.

Even as he called it out he remembered the hand signals Jess had used back in Bloodaisy and wished he had bothered to develop something similar. They certainly were a perfect concept; in battle it would often be hard for pokemon to see lightning quick movements of his hands. But against trainers it might give him a small edge, especially with the first move which could often dictate the flow of the entire battle.

This, though, was something for another time. Right now he was battling a wild Rattata with no trainers in site so he happily called out his instructions to his young Zigzagoon as his two other Pokemon watched their hyperactive companion do battle.

Speed wa,s as you said, quite key in the flow of battle. Unfortunately, Rattata had your coon beat in terms of agility and nimbleness. It lunged at your Zigzagoon with its teeth bared. It missed its attack thanks to tiny pins colling witth its body. Pin Missle did nothing but anger the rat, as it grpwled menacingly.

Using the grass as cover, your coon hid as best as it could. Its bristles blended in nicely with the blades of grass. It wouldn't last forever, though, as Rattata was bound to pick out the patch of brown mixed in with the greenery.

Jim was pleased to see that Tyke had got some distance on his opponent, though the Rattata was proving to be a worthy adversary for little Tyke. He moved remarkably quickly, faster even than Tyke's hyperactivity could manage. Still, the Rattata was out in the open now and Tyke was secreted for a chance to strike back.

"Tyke, Headbutt." Jim said it quite calmly, though he was hoping it would prove suitably effective. The purple rodent looked furious and that anger, coupled with Tyke's concealed postion should give the litle 'goon a good chance of hitting the Rattata hard before it could react.

The little raccon-dog waited for the right moment, before springing out of the grass, with an expression on his face that screamed "SURPRISE!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" which was perhaps, not quite appropriate for this situation. Nevertheless, the attack was still just as effective, and little Tyke Headbutted right into the Rattata's open mouth, so once again, little teeth sank into the Zigzagoon's body, causing poor Tyke much pain. Not as much pain, however, as the Rattata felt as his little body was suddenly slammed against a tree.

Some birthday treat.

Jim winced as the Rattata's sharp teeth dug into Tyke's body, going through his thick fur and into his flesh. The little Zigzagoon let out a whimper of pain as the rodents teeth sank in but kept going, smashing his head in his adversary's body, driving him hard against a tree with a painful crunch. Rattata gave a mufled squeek as the wind was knocked clean out of it.

From where he was standing, Jim thought the creature looked pretty badly beaten, though Tyke wasn't exactly looking all that chipper himself. Jim could see the blood from the Rattata's bite soaking through his fur, matting it an unpleasant deep brown colour as it mixed with the dust they'd picked up on the plains. Tyke was looking slightly better than his opponent, but not by much. His breathing was still coming fast and he didn't look particularly steady on his small legs. It was time to finish this fight off, before it ended badly.

"Hit him with a tackle Tyke, knock him down for the count. An' watchout for them teeth of his!" Jim commanded. A straight forward tackle seemed a safer bet than diving in head first, even if it was less damaging. The Rattata didn't look like it could take much more of a beating anyhow, and Jim was now concerned with giving Tyke the victory without the little pokemon collapsing first. After his last loss, Tyke needed the confidence from a win badly if he was going to keep his fighting spirit up. Plus, the Rattata still with its back to the tree and Jim was keen to make the most of the obstacle, both to limit his foes movement and as something to once again smack him into.

The Rattata hissed, backing up slowly, brushing his shoulder against the tree's bark. His fur stood on end, his tattered coat rustling gently to the rhythm of his breath. Shifty eyes scanned his Zigzagoon enemy and he found one major reason to let it all go and let loose a risky move.

After all... even if he fainted, with an also-fainted opponent, the Rattata saw no way his pride would wither, because he and the Zigzagoon would be down for the count; sure, it might not be a win, but it is better than a loss to that pokemon.

Clearly through both size and natural birth, the Rattata was much faster on the attack, able to get to the Zigzagoon before the 'goon could come and ram him back into the tree. And bitterly, the Rattata completely threw himself on his opponent, a Double-Edged attack.

Tyke thrashed, trying to rid the rat of his body, who scratched and tore away at fur - clumps dropping to the ground in bloody masses, moved by the small winds that cycled across the Grasslands. Tyke found his last remaining hit-points draining away, a black curtain falling over his eyes, but not before getting one good shove in, throwing the Rattata out as well.

Neither won, neither lost. It was a draw.

"Shit, no!" Jim hadn't expected the cornered Rattata to fight so viciously and now Tyke had gone down, his fur torn and bloody, his eyes closed. Dashing towards his fallen pokemon, Jim scooped the little Zigzagoon up, craddling him in his arms, frantically checking to make sure the little guy was still breathing. It was like Blue Zephyr all over again. Even as he found a pulse at Tykes neck, forcing his fingers through the matted fur, the images of that fateful night where he'd lost his partner came rushing back with painful clarity. The Ratticate's teeth ripping at her neck, the blood spill onto the soil...

His eyes flashed towards the Rattata and there was a terrible fury in them. Laying Tyke down with a care that belied the anger burning in his eyes, Jim stood up and stalked towards Tyke's foe, fist clenched. He snarled in anger at the little rodent and drew back his foot...and then stopped. The little purple rat was out of the count as well, and looked as badly bruised and beaten as Tyke did. Kicking it would serve no purpose, other than to release his rage at something that was as much his fault as any others. With great force of will, he forced himself to calm down and turn away from the Rattata and back to Tyke's prostate form.

Reaching down, he removed the Oran Berry that Tyke had stowed behind his ear. With a sigh, he took a pokeball from his belt and, after staring at it sadly for a few moments, recalled Tyke in a flash of red light. He hated keeping anyone in such containers, but it was the safest place for the unconcious rodent to be right now. It was best he stayed in there til he could be gotten to a pokemon centre to fix him up. How his mind would take this though was another matter. He'd battled twice since he'd decided to follow Jim, the only one that had since he'd joined. And both times he'd suffered crushing defeats. Given his history, Jim couldn't help but wonder how long the little guys spirit would hold out. Jim had badly wanted to give him a victory to boost his confidence and instead had only made things worse.

Come to think of it, the team as a whole had been doing very poorly. Asides from the initial victory over Tykes tormentors, every pokemon he'd fought or tried to fight had either ignored them or beaten them soundly. Either he was having a really bad streak of luck, or else he really wasn't cut out for this at all.

He turned to Gypsy and gave her a smile, though his heart really wasn't in it. Tyke's beating hurt him, and he once again found himself in need of a drink. Removing his hip flask and taking a swig of the whiskey inside, he shrugged his shoulders and turned away from the bloody grass behind him and towards Moorfeldt city where a pokemon centre awaited.

So, .4

Zigzagoon had lost, sure... but, at least the rat had been taken down with him. It was a slice pf pride, no matter how miniscule it was.

But, traveling on these platforms always led to chances to redeem yourself. Fear not, young lad, for the world of pokemon is all about chances. Hell, here come a few now.

Slithering across a platform were a group of bugs. There were thre ein al, and they seemed to be following the leader, a Weedle. Caterpie and Wurmple were on the move, as the horned bug made its way across the formation. It obviously wans't aware of you or your horse... if it was, I am sure its movement would have been more discreet.

Jim raised his hand to signal a stop as the bugs crawled along one of the hunting platforms. They seemed completely unaware of the troupe, their poisonous leader inching along proudly with its two followers creeping along behind. A small smile flickered at the corner of Jim's mouth for a brief second. Well, alright, so Tyke had failed. It was a sore blow, to him, to his team and especially to the little pokemon himself. But now Jim had a chance to redeem himself as a trainer and to show the rest of his team that they could have victory. Sure, Gypsy had a type advantage but Loam's earth moves would be ineffective against these bug pokemon. They were outnumbered 3 to 2 as well, it wasn't like this would be a walkover. But there had to be some challenge it would mean nothing.

Jim gave Gypsy a nod and without a word she shot off swiftly on a course that would bring her round behind the bugs. He footfalls were light and gentle, but she moved like the wind, her burning mane spreading out behind her. She was a delight to watch and for a second Jim forgot why she was moving at all, quite entranced by her beauty. But then his mind snapped back to the task at hand and he knelt, whispering quietly in Loam's ear.

"Alright love, we're gunna give these guys a fight, yeah? Now, Gypsy knows what to do but I'm gunna need you to help her, 'kay? You're small, so once they notice her I want you ta sneak up behind the big guy and Scratch him for all ya worth, okay? Watch out for Gypsy's ember, cus she'll be goin' for him too. Take out the leader then clean up the rest, ya get me? Anyway, get goin' an' watch yerself out there darlin'."

As the little Diglett set of stealthily, Jim stayed crouched, stroking his chin as he watched the bug brigade moving along. Taking another nip of his whiskey, he wondered if he'd forgotten anything important and if he was sending his pokemon to yet another painful defeat. Still, if he was, there was little he could do about it. He was a trainer these days, and he'd damn well prove it.

The mole was quick to lead off, burrowing underground away from sight of the bugs. This made the task for Gypsy all the more simpler without Diglett in the way. Releasing its Ember, Ponyta made that noise that horses make that I refuse to try to spell out. It watched as Weedle burned alive. A Scratch from Diglett wasn't needed to take down the leading Weedle.

Seeing their leader being burned into a crisp, the two remaining bugs turned to flee. One of them, Caterpie unfortunately, fell into the hole initially dug out by Diglett. Wurmple stopped its crawling and turned back for Caterpie. What a pal!

A brief flicker of a smile passed across Jim's face as the group's leader when straight down for the fight. Even with the type advantage he hadn't expected it to be quite so easy. He felt briefly sorry for the little bug, but at least its defeat had been relatively quick. The other two now... well, they were trying to get the hell away from hsi flaming horse, but he wasn't so inclined to let them. This was going to be his first major victory and unfortunately for the bugs, after Tyke's painful beating he wasn't so inclined to show much mercy.

The Wurmple would prove easy to deal with; Gypsy was already wheeling around and heading straight for it. Jim didn't really need to give her any instructions at all against these type of pokemon, the hours they'd spent talking before they set out meant she knew what to do. Loam, on the other hand, was a relatively inexperienced battler and had just had a small bug fall into her tunnel. He was betting the shy pokemon wasn't likely to be fond of an intruder in her domain.

It was the action in the hole that madde thid particular moderation a bit more full. You see, Caterpie knew something was coming, and prepared to shoot it with string to buy itself some time. Jim let out an extatic cry as the remaining two bug pokemon went down without a hitch. Not only a victory, but a flawless one at that! Gypsy had performed wonderfully, eliminating her two targets without batting an eyelid whilst Loam had performed admirably too, trapping the Caterpie and shredding it to ribbons before it had a chance to react. None of the three pokemon oposing them had had time to react at all.

Loam returned first, her small head reappearing by his side in a fountain of dirt. Jim beamed widely at her and made to give the little pokemon a celbratory hug, though she was still far too nervous to be comfortable with that and he had to make do with a pat on the head and another treat. Gypsy took longer to return to Jim: she seemed to have enjoyed her battle immensly and spent a while running round the grass, tossing up her head and snorting with the excitement of it. When she came back, she gave him Jim a happy neigh and seemed quite happy for Jim to stoke her heat neck for a while whilst he congratulated her on her victory.

It wasn't, he admitted to himself, all that impressive. Alot of people might point out how easily Gypsy vanquished her opponents, or how her type advantage had made the outcome clear from the off. But Jim didn't care. It was a victory nonetheless and a well deserved one. Battling with a type advantage wasn't cheating or taking an easy way out, it was good strategy. It took nothing away from the victory his team had won, right?

If he kept saying it to himself, maybe he'd believe it.

Still, whatever his reservations about the validity of the victory, his team certainly seemed bolstered by it. Even little Loam seemed slightly more confident in herself as they set out again, heading once more towards the pokemon centre in Moorfeldt City.

The commotion caused by that little scuffle with the bug trio had caused the othe rpokemon in the area to steer clear of you and your horse. This wasn't all bad, as you finally reached th eend of the platforms, and stepped foot on land again.

Reached: Trampled Grass 3

The grass here looked like it had been bulldozered, an unusual sight in a field of grass. there were a few pokemon that could do such a thing... Rhyhorn and Tauros to name a few. Good thing neither of them appeared to be around though.

Some pokemon loved this though, especially birds. Because birds like that Taillow over there could easily get to the ground where works and bugs and such were hiding, making eating all that much easier.

The grass around them had been trampled flat, a slightly unnerving sign. Jim could think of plenty of pokemon that would be capable of flattening the grass like this, but all of them were considerably larger and more powerful than the bugs and rodents he'd battled previously. Fortunately, the flat grassland meant he'd probably see such large pokemon before they hit them, thus removing the chance for a repeat of the Rattata incident. The downside was that it meant Ponyta's brightly burning mane was equally visible.

The Taillow flitting across the trampled greenery seemed rather oblivious of the little band at the moment, seemingly intently focussed on hunting its prey. It's small form flittered lightly across the grass, hovering quietly in place for a second before flittering over to check a new spot. It really did seem rather focussed, which gave him the element of surprise if he wanted to battle it. And with Moorfeldt City drawing closer and two fully fit pokemon on his team, he was quite happy to do just that.

Ideally he'd wanted to get Loam so more experience, but sending a ground pokemon against a flying creature wasn't that smart. Whic meant, once again, Gypsy was going to get a chance to shine and Jim certainly had no problems with that.

Neither did she, apparently. After her battle with the bugs she seemed quite eager to be off and Jim couldn't help but suspect that she shared some of his misgivings about the ease of her last battle. Still, here was a perfect chance to prove herself. She set off at a run, going full pelt, her mane flicking out behind her as she ran. Once again employing her favoured strategy, she wheeled around the bird to build up speed before launching a burning ember at its wings.

Gypsy was in her element, and this was where she belonged. Long fields of grass, wide open plains... this was an ideal home for her, and where she naturally battled best. She glided along the ground, her pounding hooves practically taking her soaring into the air. She was a bright orange blur as her Agility kicked in and she pelted straight at the Taillow, preparing her attack.

The blue bird perked up and her ears pricked as the sounds of pounding finally began to reach her. Her first instinct was to take into the air, but here she was enjoying a snack on some bugs and someone was interrupting? How dare they! The bird squawked and her wings kicked in, sending her flying into the air.

Her quick attack kicked in, and she dive bombed from up in the air towards Gypsy. She began to spin around in the air until she looked like a mini-tornado that sliced through the air like a machine. She slammed into Gypsy with a speedy Aerial Ace technique, and Gypsy flinched for several seconds before shaking it off. She opened her mouth and a plume of flames fanned out, engulfing the Taillow and roasting her. Fried bird, anyone?

The taillow hit Gypsy with a powerful blow, but to her credit the horse pokemon took it stoically and carried out her retaliatory fire strike with suitable effectivness. The taillow looked rather painfully chared from Gypsy's embers, its feathers smoking and blackened, though it still looked capable of putting up a fight.

Gypsy wheeled around to keep the bird in her sights, once again heading straight for the bird pokemon. Though she looked ready to hit it with another fire attack, Jim was keen to use this opportunity to broaden her attack style and so instead ordered her to tackle the creature straight on.

"Smash right in ta it gal!"

It was perhaps not the most tactically sound move, but he was after some variety and to try to break her out of her currently rather predicatable attack style. He knew there would be very little chance until she became more powerful, but at least it was a start. He wanted to try to see if he could help her become more adept at intimidation to: Blue Zephyr had one some fights simply because the other pokemon would back down.

Gypsy took to the running, chasing down the Taillow. The thing with Ponyta is that its physical strebgth is more powerful that its special strength. Simply put, that in most cases, a Tackle would be more devastating than an Ember. This was one of those cases, as the horse bull-dozed over the Taillow, ending the spar quite soundly.

Jim smiled and nodded as the bird went down, quite satisfied that he'd been proven right. Gypsy had been showing a strong tendacy towards developing a predictable attack pattern and relying soley on her fiery heritage. This was not to say that she shouldn't utilise fire attacks, nor that she shouldn't be proud of them - her fire had burnt stronger ever since the day of her birth. Nevertheless, they weren't her only option and, as this fight had proven, frequently weren't the best option either. This battle would prove a valuable lesson to Gypsy, and serve as a reminder to himself, that pokemon are never and should never be limited to attacks of their own type.

Gypsy seemed to have gotten the point by the time she trotted back over. She seemed slightly less excitable than she had last time, and had Jim not known better he might have said that she was sulking slightly. Still, he was quick to congratulate her on yet another victory and she didn't seem to fussed about it for very long. He reminded himself that she was still rather young and so might not be ready to take critisism that well, but they both wanted to learn so... Besides, he himself was guilty of not broadening her attack styles and letting her settle too easily into a pattern. They had both learned, hopefully.

Though she was slightly bruised from her battle, Gypsy still seemed quite capable of continuing so it wasn't long before they set off again, man horse and mole, moving ever closer to Moorfeldt city to revive their fallen comrade.

With your pony victorious, it was only a matter of time before the wild critters spread the word of you and your pokemon. The iwl dpokemon steered clear for the time being, letting your march through the trampled grass quite an easy one. Entering from Moorfeldt

Jim was back wandering through the Grasslands once more, though this time his team had yet another member. The Elekid seemed content to follow them along, though Jim suspected this was as much because it didn't know better than because it genuinely wanted to. Tyke seemed to get on well enough with him, but then Tyke seemed to get on well enough with pretty much everything. Gypsy seemed friendly enough, but the Elekid didn't seem to interested in the horse. Rather, it spent alot of its time trying to convince Jim to keep it fed. He really was a pretty greedy pokemon, but Jim supposed if you could just take stuff then why not? He was trying to wean the guy off eating constantly, but he was loathe to lose the creature now it was a part of the team.

They were heading west, towards the river, but at no real pace. Jim still wasn't sure where he was heading other than having a vague notion to reach Hillmoss at some point, so he was idly wandering towards the river to see if there was some way to cross. If there wasn't, he'd have to take a long detour through the farmlands or else head to the north to investigate the ruins there. It was worth checking the river out though, at least initially. 'sides, there might be some interesting water pokemon over there.

Indeed, the world was large and hardly any trainers in Opaddeka have any real destination in mind. They merely traveled all over the continent, just trying to fulfill their hopes and destinies. But, then again, some just wondered aimlessly... but then again, there's nothing wrong with that. No, sir, nothing at all.

So, anyway... where was I? Oh yeah. Pokemon. Jim and his merry little band of Pokemon tramped across the trampled grass and headed towards the great river. Pokemon roamed around haphazardly, gathering up food, or just trying to avoid the humans that so often ran through these parts. But there was always the one Pokemon who couldn't resist the urge to get a better look. In this case, a Sentret.

The tiny little Pokemon slithered up through the grass on its tummy in a snake-like fashion, its long splayed out behind it with fur sticking out in all different directions. It ducked behind a particularly large grouping of grass and eyeballed Jim and his troupe. It let out a little squeal after noticing that the the yellow one, Elekid, happened to be staring right at him. He'd been spotted.

It took Jim a few moments to notice that the latest addition to their party wasn't with them any more. Turning back he spotted the Elekid (which for the moment he was just refering to as Kid) staring rather intently into a tall cluster of grass. At first Jim assumed that the little guy had spotted some food in there but on closer inspection he noticed a pair of eyes peering back out at the electric pokemon. There was something in there, watching them.

Jim looked at the bushes for a second, wandering whether it was justifiable to attack whatever was lurking in there. But then he remember that the whole purpose of this journey was to train a strong team, and avoiding every fight he could would get him nowhere fast. At the very least it was worth seeing what was in there.

"Burn it out would ya Gyps', lets see it's face."

Gypsy gave a snort in responce, the blasted a mass of crackling embers straight at the tall grass, hoping to drive the creature inside it out to the open. Once it showed itself, then Jim'd see which of his team would get the honour of defeating it.

As far as Elekid knew, the pair of eyes could have been attached to something to eat. You never know... cannibalism is in nowadays.

The scout overheard your orders to the Ponyta, and emerged before the horse had a chance to lit its little ass on fire. It leapt out from the foliage, and took off running. In no way did it want to be used as fodder for you and your merry band of pokemon.

A Sentret... Jim had been hoping for something a lil' harder than that. Still, a battle was a battle as his team needed all the experience they could get at present. He felt slightly bad for the Sentret but if you wanted to be a trainer you had to get used to fightin' other pokemon, right? He'd be no good as a trainer at all if he winced every time his team attacked. He sighed.

"Alright, Tyke, Pin Missile. Stop it runnin' way. Lets get this thing."

It'd be a long time til he started not caring 'bout the welfare of every creature he fought, but if he was going to get revenge for Blue Zephyr he had to learn sooner or later.

The fleeing Sentret didn't look back, even as you barked orders to your pokemon to atatck it. The scout had one thing on his mind, an done thing only, and that was staying conscious long enough to flee the scene.

tyke raised the hair on its back, firing tiny missles at the scout pokemon. Only a couple hit the fleeing creature, but they did their job of slowing him down. The rest of the needles spread out around tehe Sentret, finally causing him to look back. He quickly realized he was trapped.

Seeing no other option but to fight for his life, he lunged at the coon with its claw at the ready, and began swiping at Tyke quite ferociously. This continued until Tyke managed to remove the fluffy-tailed critter from its close proximity.

Jim nodded as two balls of fur collided. He hadn't expected Tyke to be able to hold off the Sentret on his own, though he'd done a good enough job of keeping his attention. Now it was time for one of the others to lend the little Zigzagoon a hand in taking the larger pokemon down and Jim already had a clear enough idea of how he wanted to do it.

"Tyke, headbutt the critter. Loam, if it goes for him again, Sucker Punch the furball."

He'd seen Loam move and for a small critter she could move pretty darn fast. It was a nasty one-two hit he was setting up: either Tyke got to beat on the sentret by himself or Loam got a nice powerful hit in before either of them moved. Again he felt guilty for fighting the creature two on one, but Tyke needed a bit of a booster at the moment to bring him up to the level of some of the rest of the team. The zigazoon needed a victory, even if it was one alongside one of his partners. And it wasn't as if teamwork was a bad skill, right?

He really was having to justify himself far too much these days...

Diglett took to the ground, making the hole that moles love to make. Somehow, it always knew at the right opportunity to pop up and attack. Diglett was cool like that.

So, the scout lunged forward to swipe at the coon once again, only to gt punched in the face by the head of Loam. The scout stumbled and rolled in the grass, obviously feeling the effects of the Sucker Punch.

Tyke followed suit, using a Headbutt of its own to really drive the point home. The result was a win over the fluffy-tailed pokemon.

Loam was indeed proving to be rather skilled with her good timing. The shy little mole was proving to be a capable combatant, even if she still had time talking to Jim or even to the rest of the team. Tyke had done well too, winning his first battle even if it had been a team effort. He didn't seem to be too fussed about Loam's help. Rather, he was terrifying the poor creature with his excitable yips and jumps, darting all around the little Diglett who was doing her utmost to heer her head away from his antics. It was pretty comical really.

Jim's attention was more focussed on the battered and beaten Sentret though. Try as he might, he couldn't completely resolve his mind with the idea of fighting random wild pokemon without any provocation. Now, if a pokemon attacked them first, that would've been different. But the Sentret had only been curious, it wasn't right to punish it for such inquisitiveness. He knew it was the normal way for pokemon to improve themselves, that it was standard practise for trainers the world over but it still didn't sit right with him. The poor Sentret was out cold but its body was beaten, bruised and filled with nasty pins from Tyke's assault. It would recover, he supposed, eventually... provided a wild pokemon didn't shred it first.

He really couldn't bring himself to leave it like that. Wincing at his own compassion, he scooped the little pokemon up. He couldn't take it anywhere, not really, but at least he could put it somewhere safe til it woke up. He found a nice thick patch of grass and laid the Sentret inside it, moving the foliage to cover the creature from the eyes of any pokemon that might wander by. It wouldn't protect it if something walked right on top of it, but it was the least he could do.

He turned away, trying to avoid the eyes of his team. He didn't expect them to understand. After all, battles between pokemon were the way of the world, he knew that. It just wasn't his way. He didn't want to appear weak to his team, but he supposed they'd have to get used to his way of dealin' with these things. Either that or abandon him. There was always that option as long as he kept the outside their pokeballs, he supposed, though he hoped none of them would.

Anyway, standing around would only draw interest which meant bad things for the Sentret. He started off again in the same direction as before, striding ahead purposefully, trying not to dwell on his inadequicies.

Poor Sentret. poor, poor little insignificant Sentret...

+1 :fp for your compassion and such.

Your walk to the river from the huge patch of grass that was trampled was rather mundane after the incident with Sentret. You towered over the land, making the pokemon native to the grasslands flee before you even saw them. The good thing is that you would soon be ay water.

The water was quite clear... you could see the rocks and things at the bottom. It wasn't very deep, even considering it led into the ocean. You could even spot the pokemon in the water... That included a couple of Magikarp, flopping about with no purpose whatsoever.

As confused as he was still feeling, the Magicarp's antics did help cheer Jim up slightly. They were quite useless pokemon, floppering about in the water quite pitifully. If their evolution wasn't so powerful, such a species never would have survived for very long at all. They're frantic flopping was rather amusing though, as their mouths opened and shut frantically, gills flapping, eyes quite vacant. Fighting there really would be cruel, even by most trainers standard.

The new 'Kid looked like he might be thinking about it though. He was watching the two fish quite intently, his eyes moving from them to Gypsy and back again. It was pretty obvious to Jim what he was thinking, his dreams of a nice bit of cooked fish was almost glowing in his eyes. Jim sighed. Even had he been inclined to kill the fish off for food (much more justifiable in his eyes than beatening them in a fight. Survival was an entirely different matter than just prodding buttock), he doubted Magicarp would taste all that great. If they had, they'd have been hunted out long ago.

With a sigh, he grabbed ahold of the Elekid's shoulder and pulled him back from the water, offering him some of their supplies in an effort to draw him away from the water. He started walking further upstream, looking for a ford or similar point where he could wade across.

The Magikarp, after flopping around for a bit, got pushed downstream by the current. This left Elekid rather sad, seeing as how it was used to fresh food, not canned shit. But... it took what it could get.

Wandering down the shoreline, an easy way across didn't seem to be presenting itself. But, there was something else to mention here. Pokemon found near rivers and such are usually quite timid and easy-going due to being away from all of th estrife and such that plagues the land.

That being said, up ahead of you was a pair of pokemon, skimming around the surface of the river with glee. The two playful water types showed no signs of letting up, as laughter and such filled the riverside.

Jim smiled at the two Pokemon playing in the river, seemingly without a care in the world. It made a nice change from all the pokemon he'd seen so far: the wild ones either fled at their approach or attacked without much provocation. These two, however, seemed quite happy just playing with each other on the water.

The Kid seemed considerably less interested in these two pokemon than it had been in the Magikarp. After all, how much meat could you get out of a spindly little Bug type? By contrast, however, Tyke seemed immensly interested in the two swimmers. Jim had to hold him tightly in his arms to stop the little zigzagoon throwing himself into the water to join them. Loam and Gypsy, of course, were standing a little way back: though Gypsy at least seemed to enjoy watching the two water pokemon, both were naturally wary of the water.

Tyke seemed to be settling down slightly, when it suddenly all got a bit interesting. The Surskit tried to pull of a particularly elaborate maneuveur and failed rather spectacularly. Its comical attempts to find its balance on the water again cause Jim to roar with laughter, his own mixing with that of the pokemon. Unfortunately he let his grip loosen a bit and Tyke, taking full advantage of this, dived headfirst out of Jim's arms and into the river making straight for the two playful pokemon.

With the two pokemon and their rough-housing, it was only natural that your own creatures would want in on the fun... at least one of them. Unfortunately the one to join was Tyke. After loosening your grip, the playful coon leapt into the water causing quite a commotion.

The two water types scurried from their position in the river to the land on the opposite side. They eyed the coon lik ehe was mentally ill or something.

This was when you noticed something... the river. Tyke had stood up, and was actually out of the water, for the most past. It only came up to its body, leaving its legs and feet submerged. This particular portion wasn't all that deep, it would seem. If I didn't know any better, I would say that its the perfect place to cross.

Tyke looked absolutely destraught that he'd been abandoned and looked liable to break down into tears. The poor thing was whimpering pitifully, compltely failing to realise it had discovered exactly what they'd been looking for. His oppinion of the water Pokemon slightly marred by the fact that they'd upset Tyke, Jim stood up from where he was sitting and strode into the water to where tike was hunched. The portion of the little guy's fur that wasn't sodden had drooped in sadness. Jim stooped down, plucking the little guy out of the stream and held him close. Throwing an evil look at the two Pokemon at the pokemon on the opposite bank, he return to his team to lead them across.

Gypsy, fortunately, was capable of walking through it herself, though she wasn't that happy about it. It was her first real encounter with a body of water larger than a pond and she didn't much like it. Still, with Jim walking by her side she made it across, looking extremely relieved as she stepped onto the land on the other side. Loam needed carrying across, the little mole being far too small and vulnerable to make it by herself. Tyke needed carrying too, still upset that he'd been shunned. The Kid, not wanting to be left out, insisted on Jim carrying him as well. It took four different crossings (Jim needed to keep his hand on Gypsy's neck when she crossed and so need his arms free) and though the river was comparatively shallow, it was still rather wide and the current fast flowing. There were a couple of times when Jim's foot slipped in the pebbles and he almost went in but fortunately he managed to stay upright. Things could get bad pretty fast is he lost one of his team into the water.

Thankfully Jim was able to hod on to them all, lrsving the two water types behind. It didn't take a long walk for th esound sof laughter to reach your ears once again. The Lotad and Surskit had comtinued playing, despite the interruption.

Making your way through the field of grass, it was clear that this place was a lot less exciting that the other fields of grass you had gone through. These grasslands were the breeding ground for weaker pokemon, mainly for the training purposes of greenhorn trainers.

That pidgey over there was no exception. It was pecking at the ground, probably trying to find a worm or six.
