The Blighted Plains stretched on for miles and miles around the town of Y'orek, pollution capitol of the universe and beyond. Effects of such negligence were bound to spread, and soon the Blighted Plains were formed. It lacked plants, drinkable water, or any of your normal assortment of Pokemon. It wasn't exactly a trainer hot spot.

Perfect.

Having a warrant out for your arrest in every town and city in Oppadeka tended to make things difficult for a trainer. He had always wanted to beat a Gym, even just one. That was out. Food and other things would be nearly impossible to get a hold of. He would basically be cut off from human life.

And then, he found this kid.

Company, a friend, a son. Almost.

A plan had formed in his head almost the moment he had stumbled across those kids. He was going to have to go into hiding, that angered cop would probably have made something up, a terrible trumped up charge, anything that would get him arrested on sight by any sort of law enforcement.

Y'orek lacked pretty much all of that. Plus, it was practically owned by Team Rocket. A team that he was a member of. He was almost safe here.

So, he would become friends with this kid. Train him, teach him. Make him almost a part of himself, and then, send him out into the world with his Pokemon, his things.

Almost himself.

They could easily stay in contact; Tim would be safe in the Team Rocket HQ, and phones hadn't been completely wiped out yet. His own PokeTech was most likely being tracked. That had been taken care of; he had dumped the thing in his PC. Tim didn't know much about how it worked, but since it was accessible from anywhere in the world, it probably used some incredibly sophisticated science thingamajig. Either way, it would most likely screw with any signal they were using to track him. If not, it could be disposed of. Anyway, he could keep in touch with this kid, advise him.

He probably didn't have much of an idea of what parent's were supposed to be like anyway, he probably wouldn't argue.

All of this would lead up to his eventual return. He had plenty of time to work out a plan to get his name cleared. And when the time came, he would get his Pokemon back from the kid, get the kid others, and Team Rocket would have gained two very good members.

But, those other kids...

He had left them in Radloff. A necessary sacrifice, it had to be done. They could have come too, but they had chosen to run away. Maybe he would send the kid off to find them eventually. But, Step Three was awaiting.

"So, kid, what's your name?" Tim asked, as they walked out to the plains, Barboach at his side. The fish would be integral to the plan, but he needed to be a little bigger.

The plains were a wonderful place if you wanted to hide from the law. Nobody in their right mind would willingly search here... this place sucked. If a criminal wanted to stay in this place and rot, so be it. It was almost like a prison in itself.

The kid was petrified. he had never ventured too far away from Radloff. Now, he was away from his friends. They would have to obtain a new leader, and thigns of that nature. meanwhile, he had been stripped away from the only life he ever knew.

He wanted to beat the living hell out of you. But, you had pokemon. He did not. he was homeless, but not stupid. he didn't stand a chance, especially on your home turf. He didn't answer outright when you aske dhim for his name. He stayed speechless, showing his disdain for you and your actions that put him in no mans land.

Realizing that he was stuck, and you were his only chance of getting home, he thought best to speak, and get it over with.

'I don't have a name.' The boy mumbled. 'If I did, I don't remember it. The other kids, they called me Doc. I took care of them. they were my family...'

He took a step away from you, not wanting to get too close. Side-stepping, he tripped oevr something in or on the ground. He lay there complaining while the pokemon in question hopped to its feet, and glared blankly at the boy. It took to the skies, and hovered directly in front of the lad, causing the complaining and bitching to cease out of fear.

"No name? Hm, that's a bit of a problem, we'll have to try and think of one." Tim paused. "No, wait. Doc can just be your name, you've been called that for so long. Sounds kinda cool anyway."

There was still something odd about this. The kid seemed incredibly hesitant, Tim felt as though he had to force his name out of him. It was obvious, really. Tim had just snatched the kid up and flown away, forced to leave the others behind. Tim hated it too, and he had only known them for less than a day. This kid, 'Doc', had cared for and supported them for who-knows how long.

"Look, Doc, I know you're upset about leaving the oth-" Tim began, but was cut off when Doc stumbled over a Gligar. Which were poisonous.

"Doc back up!" Shouted Tim. "Those are poisonous! Barboach, use a Water Pulse to knock it to the ground, and then an Earthquake to finish it!"

Barboach hopped forward, ready to attack.

"Doc, grab onto something," Tim instructed as he took hold of the disgusting ground.

The awakening thanks to Doc caused Gligar to flutter about. It was sleeping, now forced to be awake. Gligar took its attention off of the boy, sensing that it was not a threat. Barboach, however, was a fellow pokemon. Pokemon were always threats.

Gligar easily dodged the Water Pulse from your grounded fish. Thanks to its ability to fly, the ground type had a serious edge over most of its type. Naturally your fish failed to use earthquake, knowing that it would be useless. Thus, the plains remained quiet for now.

Gligar saw the attack as an act of aggression, and went on the offensive itself. It begun with a hovering dance in the air. It looked more powerful after it ceased, as it dove towards your fish, using its wing as a claw, slashing at it.

Doc looked on, not knowing what to do or where to go. Should he run away now that you were preoccupied with this Gligar, and try to find his way home? Or should he stay and watch your fish get destroyed?

The plan had all seemed much better in Tim's head. That scenario didn't involve Barboach totally missing, and the Gligar delivering such a powerful blow. Of course, there was no real way the Gligar had a chance; he had a whole arsenal of Pokemon at his disposal. No, the most worrying was Doc's definite appearence of having second thoughts.

"Looks like we might had bit of trouble Doc!" Tim said, although with a joyous tone and a smile on his face. A few tut-tuts would have been appropriate. "Not to worry, though, I've got five others, all of which will be your's someday."

And with that, he tossed a Pokeball to the ground, bringing out Cynder, his Quilava.

"This is my favorite, and also the strongest. Watch her now...

"'Kay Cynder. Jump up to get a vantage point and try to bring it down with a Flamethrower. Careful now, don't underestimate it. Once we get it down to the ground, we can really go to work. Barboach, use a Future Sight."

"... all of which will be your's someday." You had the kids attention. He stared a hole through you, as if askign himself if he heard you correctly. Your pokemon will soon be his? It made no sense.

Cynder attempted to elevate itself by leaping into the air. Gligar saw this, howeevr, and simply flew higher as it made sure to retain the elevation advantage. It couldn't dodge the stream of fire that barrelled towards it, however, as was soon on the ground. Your fish remained still, using whatever odd powers it had to predict a hit.

Gligar was gorunded, but only momentairly as it took to the skies again, this time targetting Cynder with its attack, but not before heightening its attacking power once again. If it wasn't dealt with soon, things could get rather difficult for your pokecritters.

Aha. The kid was his. He had been a little worried about using his ace in the hole so early, but from the look on this kids face, he wouldn't be going anywhere.

"Yep, that's right..." Tim said, his voice slowly starting to trail off. "They will be your's. But for now, this Gligar seems to be giving us a little bit of trouble. Cynder, same strategy as before. Barboach, once the Gligar is grounded, or not, use a Water Pulse. Both of you start to retreat a little, too! No need to give the thing an easy hit."

He turned back to Doc.

"Sometimes I wonder if these guys could survive without me!" He said, laughing, hoping Doc would join in.

Doc, still being cautious, remained still and quiet, not wantign to draw the Gligars attention to him instead of your pokemon.

Meanwhile, your pokemon were struggling to say the least. Their opponent had the advantage of flight, and could easily dodge your creatures attacks. the only way to win woudl be to double team it... which is what they did.

Cynder fired off its Flamethrower first, grabbing the Gligars attention. The flying scorpion thing was nwo focused on the fire spitting mouse, as it barrleed towards your creature with the intent of doing bodily harm.

On the reverse side of things, Barboach had prepped its Water Pulse, and had fired it in the general direction of the flying opponent. It hit the ground type in the back, direct hit, causing it to flutter in the air before falling to the ground in a heap.

"Aha!" Shouted Tim triumphantly. "See that Doc? These two here are nothing to sneeze at!" He smiled at his Pokemon, and then recalled them.

"Really, you're going to be well-equipped when it comes time for me to pass the baton. There will be limitless opportunities for you. Say you want to challenge a Gym? You can head right on over, and these Pokemon should help you give them a run for their money.

"And the biggest, perhaps. We can find those kids that we had to leave behind. After, we may be able to work against the force, get me back out there. We could even travel together! Two heads are better than one!

"But, before that, we might as well get to know each other better. I think a nice expedition off to the Eastern Island should be fun, how about it?"

Tim took a seat on a purplish, tainted rock, and looked thoughtfully over Doc.

Doc gazed at the outcome of the battle. Your pokemon were triumphant against the flying menace. Barely.

'If your pokemon were all that great, one of them should have been able to handle that thing.' Doc mumbled spitefully. As far as an adventure, he was already on one. he had never been away from radloff for too long. Now, he was miles away. He was uneducated in the forms of pokemon and gym challenges and such things. But... did he really have a choice? You were his only way of survival. He was forced to accept your tutelage.

'What Eastern Island?' Doc questioned. He wasn't familiar with much of anythign beyond Radloff. He didn't know where he was, even thoguh tot the normal traveler, their location would be given away by the horrid surroundings. At any rate, his question was a buying signal, meaning that he was up for whatever you had planned.

-So, this kid is... well, a kid. He looks around 11-13, but he doesn't really know for sure. He is homeless after all.
-He stands around 4'9", but his attitude and bravery make up for his lack of height.
-His hair is light brown, but it looks black right now because it is rather filthy.
-His shoes are falling apart, and he wears a piece of cloth for a shirt. The way it is draped around him, it looks like a poncho or something. His jeans are way too short... they look like floods, coming halfway up to his knees.
-His skin is tanned from being out in the open for so much, but ti is dirty as all hell.
-His build is rather skinny, as he is homelss, and hasn't had much in the form of healthy food.
-He is your NPC. You now control him. Never can you and him have more thna 6 pokemon combined. Meaning, that if he somehow comes across 2 pokemon he wants to catch, you can only have 4 with you. His pokemon goes into your own pokemon to form a collective APL.

The kid had a point there. One should have been enough.

"Just playing it safe Doc, just playing it safe. Now, let's head back to Y'orek, you look need some sort of clothes that will provide a little protection, it's going to be freezing over there. And maybe a shower while we're at it, I'm sure the Rocket HQ has everything we need."

Tim beckoned to the kid, and they began to walk back to Y'orek, Tim explaining about the marshes and jungle and cold along the way.

Today, two travelers set out on a magnificent journey across the world, the universe, and time itself.

Or just the ocean.

Anyway, Tim and Doc, who was now freshly cleaned and laundered, were headed eastward, a certain Phaldan Island in their sights. Tim felt quite excited about the whole thing; there were millions of places to discover, and should he stumble across another safe place in this crazy mixed-up world, it would amount to much more than a hill of beans.

Doc, on the other hand, was quite preoccupied. He was newly clothed, and although he had gotten everything purposely too big, he still felt confined by the whole situation; this "Tim", where they were headed, and even the clothes. He might have to tear them a little to give him more freedom.

This Tim person, he seemed nice enough. He had taken him in, sheltered and clothed him, and even had Pokemon. Pokemon that would be his. Maybe that wasn't so bad.

But this strange island that Tim spoke of. He said it was cold. It never got too cold in Radloff. He wondered how he would deal with it, really, the though of biting wind and snow didn't appeal to him too much.

He'd tough it out.

So, yeah. Two would-be Phaldans, heading eastward, a single fish at their sides.

The two humanoids walked in the poisonous land with little fear. Well... one walked through the poisonous plain with little fear. The other person was scared shitless.

Doc followed closely behind you, unsure of where exactly you were elading him. But, there you were... leading all the same. Thinsg were mighty calm in the area. Not much in the form of action was going down in chinatown. You could see pretty far ahead of you thanks to the lack of landforms, giving you an open eye as to what was coming.

It was then that you spotted it... a rare sight. A balloon floating in the air, drifting along where the wind took it, without a care in the world. How would a balloon have a care? If that balloon was really a pokemon!

"Aha!" Tim shouted. "We're going to need to find some Pokemon, Barboach needs to evolve so we can get over to Phaldan Island."

Tim glanced momentarily from Doc to Barboach. Both seemed a little confused, and then he realized that they must not be noticing that the balloon was actually a Pokemon. He gestured to the Drifloon over head, and both Barboach and Doc had a sudden look of understanding. Human and Pokemon side by side, both with the same look of realization on their face. Kind of funny, actually, and Tim tried to keep from smiling. He was about to order an attack, when he had an idea. It was about time Doc started to get used to battling, especially with these Pokemon, seeing as they would soon be his.

"Doc, why don't you try this one?" Tim asked, stepping backwards and waving his arms forward. Almost immediately, Doc started shaking from nervousness, and Tim almost had to force him forward next to Barboach.

"Come on Doc, we have five other Pokemon, it's okay if you mess up."

"Um, Barboach," Doc said, trying to to stutter. He looked around the battlefield. They had surprise on their side... "Quick, use a Water Pulse!" He shouted. It was the only attack that he knew Barboach could use, having seen it just earlier.

"Good..." Tim muttered, mostly to himself, as Barboach slithered forward, snake-like, to the purplish balloon Pokemon overhead.

Nervously Doc instructed the water pokemon to peform a Water Pulse, the fish look at Tim who nodded. Figuring this child would be ok to take orders from he flopped underneat Drifloon and sent a wave of spiraling water at the ghost.

The water hit Drifloon with an amazing mixture of power and accuracy, the force of the attack sent Drifloon skyward. For a few moments the pokemon hovered high into the air, after some time he slowly fell back to a normal height. Expanding he swallowed a huge supply of air then with releasing the pressure buildup the wind struck Barboach.

"You've got the advantage here Doc," Tim joked. Then a patented rapid-sobering began, and a few seconds later, he added, "But be careful here, just build on that, and the battle will be locked up."

Doc might of nodded, but he was so hunched over, watching the battle intently, that it would have been impossible to tell. This battling thing... He liked it.

"Alright Barboach!" Shouted Doc, thinking. He had little to go on here, but he thought that he knew another attack the fish may have. "Use a Future Sight! Then, come back towards me and use a Water Pulse! Watch for anything that thing might try to do!"

He was rather blunt, Tim thought.

Doc was becoming quite accustomed to Barboach and his attacks, with more confidence he declared an attack he had a feeling Barboach would know. The psychic abilities of Barboach were not well known but he was able to envision into the future and from his vision he saw Drfiloon falling to the ground.

The ghost balloon slowly drifted towards Doc and Barboach but his travel was interupted by a high powered spiral stream released from 'Boach's mouth. The swirling nature of the attack confused the hell out of Drifloon and as it went to strike back its gust attack backfired and sent him flying into the ground.

Wow, this kid was something. Tim never would have expected his first outing to go this well. Not only was Drifloon at only have its strength, Barboach had even managed to ground it.

Tim looked Doc over. He knew what the best thing to do here was, but he was a little unsure as to whether Doc did. Really, he hadn't explained about any of Barboach's attacks. Yet, Doc had performed incredibly well. He'd still better suggest an Earthquake.

"Earthquake right here, Doc," Tim advised with a tap on the shoulder. He leaned back and awaited Doc's orders.

---

Hmm. Maybe Tim was right, and there was something about these Pokemon. Barboach had knocked that Drifloon right out of the sky!

Feeling a tap on his shoulder, Doc turned around, neck-length light brown hair flying all around as he hastened to listen. Maybe Tim had spotted something better than an Earthquake, he had been right about this Barboach's hidden strength.

"Earthquake right he Doc," He said.

How annoying. Doc returned to the battle, a vein throbbing in his neck. Didn't this guy believe in him? He'd prove him wrong.

"Earthquake, quick Barboach!" Doc shouted. Barboach waved a tiny fin at the kid.

Man, was everyone this annoying?

The small fish flopped around helplessly on the ground for a few moments, then his movements became more erratic and a weird light enveloped him. Stopping his movements the water pokemon simply lay there motionless, out of nowhere a sudden tremor was sent through the ground. Drifloon could feel the earth move under his body but it was though he was paralysed, unable to move he braced himself for the attack.

The earth bucked under Barboach's control it sent the baloon pokemon high into the air and then for a moment the ghost was suspended in mid air, a flash of light appeared and then Drifloon was knocked out on the ground.

"Yeah!" Shouted Doc triumphantly as the Gligar fell to the ground. It was quite something, really, winning your first Pokemon battle. Tim tried, yet couldn't remember his own.

It was a little troubling, but he shrugged it off.

Doc turned to Tim as he withdrew Barboach. There was something in that kids face that just jumped at Tim. The too-bright smile. The flowing hair. This kid could have been something, had he not lost his parents.

"We'd better stop at Y'orek one more time before we set out, Doc. Don't want this little guy injured when we get the the sea." Tim said. He took Doc by the shoulders and guided him back to town.

=== (Don't feel like making two posts, so after a stop in Y'orek...)

There was something strange about Barboach. Ever since they had stopped in Y'orek, he had been positively... Glowing?

"Doc," Tim said, pointing towards Barboach. "Watch this."

And then, in a spectacular array of dazzling white light and star-effect things, Barboach became a mighty Whiscash, large and blue.

"That's how we'll be getting to Phaldan Island," Tim said, laughing. Doc seemed positively amazed.

"Come on Doc, let's get going."

Fumes and gases were deceptively abound; indeed, they were nearly invisible and had little smell, but once you got a few good whiffs of it, your mind was sent reeling. They were noticeably taking more of an effect on Doc than Tim, for he had never smelled such scents.

"Shake it off their Doc, we'll be through here soon," Tim said, trying to keep his hurried lunch down.

Then, on the horizon, a Tim spotted strange purple-and-black object. At first, he thought the gases were causing him to lose his mind. But, Doc perked up immediately upon spotting it, and pointed to it, saying;

"That's a Gastly, right?"

"Yep Doc," Tim said reassuringly. Doc looked to him, hoping he might be handed a Pokeball. "Sorry Doc, but we need to get moving. But we'll have a lot to battle soon, I promise you."

Doc seemed a little put off by this, but the reassurance of many more Pokemon allowed him to perk up, and they both began to run.

Walking across the landscape, you could detect a slow change in the quality of the air. The choking fumes subsided, replaced by a dry, stale, but clean air. Even the ground underfoot looked healthier, in a way. Still pretty barren, but at least it had turned to a colour that ground should look like.

If you looked up, towards the horizon, you wouldn't see much. Just the same boring, flat expanse of land, just like underfoot. The ocean was across here somewhere; you were bound to hit it if you kept walking in a straight line. Welcome to the most featureless area in all Opaddeka.
