Plunk! The final coin fell into the glass jar atop the tiny kitchenette counter. The jar was now completely full of coins and bills. It had taken nearly six years to save up all that coin. Lauren just stood looking down at the jar rereading the label as she had done everyday since starting this jar. Pokemon Journey Fund At long last the jar was now full and she could finally begin her Pokemon journey. Most kids left when they were about ten years of age, the age she had begun saving, the age when everything in her life had changed. A small hand slipped into her own and Lauren turned her soft brown eyes down to the figure beside her. Melissa gazed up at Lauren questioning in her matching brown eyes. Melissa the little sister she'd never expected. Melissa her burden but also her greatest gift. A single tear fell from her cheeks and the older girl knelled down to Melissa's level. "We did it." She whispered grinning happily at the younger girl. Melissa's eyes widened and she let out a small squeal throwing herself into her sister's arms. Lauren hugged her baby sister tightly to her thin body. Life here had been rough since that day, but Lauren had never given up hope that one day she would be able to take her sister from this place. The apartment around them was what one might expect from a roach motel, in fact it was an old roach motel converted to be apartments. There was only two rooms, the main room and the bathroom. The main room was where they shared an old full sized bed, had a small kitchenette area installed with a mini fridge and microwave. The bathroom consisted of a shower and toliet. There was a sink in the main room with everything else. The only other piece of furniture was a small table and two rickety chairs and a small dresser. They had no television or any other sorts of luxury items. The paint had once been white but had now grown a yellow cream color, plus the strip of wallpaper around the top was peeling and needed replacing badly. The room was also devoid of any real color but for a small pink spot on the end of the bed which moved raising a small head with two furry ears to look at the humans who were making much too much noise as usual. "Skitty..." the small feline stretched and approached the two humans rubbing against their legs and looking up at them with wide eyes. The skitty was the only spot of cheer in the dingy apartment. It was a pure stroke of luck that the Melissa had found her rummaging around in the garbage behind the building. Since she hadn't been afraid of humans they assumed she was abandoned. After a year of asking around about skitty hoping to find her trainer they finally gave up the search and added her to their small family. Melissa needed a friend when her sister was out at work. Now the two were nigh inseparable. Lauren laughed as Melissa scooped up skitty and twirled her around the room. "We did it Lady Pink!" Melissa cried happily calling aloud the skitty's nickname. Lady Pink, Lauren had always thought it a bit silly and merely called her Lady but she was her sister's pet after all. Lauren grin and grabbed the younger girl scooping her up in her arms. "Ok now it's time for bed, much too late for little girls and skittys to be up and about. We've got a big day ahead of us." Lauren said gently setting Melissa and Lady on the bed. Melissa frowned stubbornly and shook her head. "I can't sleep! I'm too excited." She said and squirmed out of her sister's arms releasing Lady as she did so. She gave her sister a challenging look then started jumping up and down on the bed. "Whee! We're going on a Pokemon journey!" Lauren let out a heavy sigh and caught the girl as she jumped towards her. Melissa grinned at Lauren and pecked her cheek smriking. "Come on silly girl, you need a bath and to get to bed." Melissa made to protest but yawned instead. Lauren smirked at her knowing the seven year old was more tired than she made out to be. The older girl set her sister down at the bathroom door and waited as she slipped inside to shower and get ready for bed. Lauren walked over to the bed and began to remove her uniform. For the past three years she'd been waitressing down at a nearby diner every night to pay the rent on this place and save for the Pokemon journey. She also had an early morning paper route and a part time job at the local 'Mart. She tossed the black slacks and blue stained shirt off to a corner. For a few minutes she just stared at the pile of clothes, at long last she wouldn't have to wear that uniform again, wouldn't have to get up every morning at five, wouldn't have to listen to customers whining and complaining about whatever meager mistake she must have made. Freedom, that's what this Pokemon journey was to her, pure freedom for the both of them. The shower quieted and Lauren waited by the door her pjs under one arm. Melissa walked out and yawned again. "Don't forget to brush your teeth now." Lauren warned as she slipped in to use the shower herself. Melissa made a face at her sister's back but began to brush her teeth then crawled into bed and was soon instantly asleep. Lauren set her clothes on the toilet and stretched stifling a yawn of her own. She undid the tie that held her long dark blond hair up out of her face. It fell in soft waves to her shoulders. Lauren slipped into the shower and turned up the heat letting it poor over her body. She was thiner than a girl of sixteen and standing at 5'7" should be but she was well toned from working so hard. The hot water spashed over her hair and hit her sore muscles just right. Lauren sighed in content letting her mind wander. It had been so long since she'd felt this kind of happiness. Six years alone had never been the plan but that's what fate had given her. ... Life before hadn't been too much easier. Before there had been her mom and dad. She was their world, their little girl. They had a small house, dad worked as did mom to pay the bills but life was happy. They had a pet growlithe and were a typical Opaddeka family. She was eight when they found out that her mother was pregnant. They weren't planning on having another baby but the joy the news brought to them all was very great. Lauren had always wanted a little sibling. They had been told her mother couldn't have anymore children and saw this as a miracle. Yet sometimes fate has other things in store. A few days after her ninth birthday, Melissa was born. But there were complications, she was premature and her birth had caused internal bleeding in their mother. She died just a few hours after giving birth. Melissa had quickly been rushed to intensive care as they didn't know if she would survive, her heart rate was very low and her breathing shallow. It was another miracle that she survived. But they were now a broken family her father had said. He a broken man. For his wife had been everything to him. Oh he loved his girls but each day he grew more and more depressed. He quit his job and began to drink. Then one night he just up and left to go drinking again Lauren had assumed. But he was already heavily intoxicated and he ended up hitting another car. The crash killed him instantly and left the other people badly injured. This had been the night of Lauren's tenth birthday. Her parents had been planning to surprise her with her very own Pokemon journey. All the necessary items had already been gotten and hidden away. That night though her father had left the bag of various Pokemon gear in her room before he left. Some wonder if he hadn't been planning to kill himself that night. When Lauren awoke that morning she found the bag and was thrilled to think she would possibly be allowed to go on a Pokemon journey of her very own. She heard crying coming from Melissa's crib though, they shared the same room as there wasn't currently a second room in the house. She peered over the crib at her little sister who sniffled and looked up at her wide eyed. "Hungry Lissa?" She asked smiling. "It's ok I'll go get daddy." Lauren hurried off to her father's room and found the place empty with the bed unmade. She frowned and checked downstairs, he wasn't there either. She shrugged he must've gone out and went to the fridge to prepare a bottle for her sister. Ever since her mother had died she'd been doing most of the work in taking care of Melissa. Her father didn't have the mind set for it right now she always told herself. He would get better in time. Lauren missed her mother very much of course but she had always been a strong girl bouncing back from most anything. She hurried upstairs to give Melissa her bottle then heard a knock on the door. Frowning she slipped on her robe still being in her pjs and went down to see what it was all about. An imposing officer stood at the door and looked down at her slightly surprised. "Hello sweetie, is your mommy home?" He said in a rather condescending voice and giving her a gently smile. Lauren frowned and looked him over. "No sir, my mommy's dead. I'm the only one home right now." She told him meeting his gaze squarely. "How can I help you?" The officer seemed unsure of what to say in response to that. "Well... may I come in then sweetie? I need to talk to you about your daddy." Lauren stared at him a minute. "I'm not supposed to let strangers into the house when daddy's gone." She told him wondering what on earth her father could've done. "Oh well I... have some very bad news about your daddy and I would really like to sit down and talk to you about it. Want to see my badge? Then you know I'm an officer not a stranger." He took off his badge and extended toward her to read. Lauren looked over the badge not really sure if it was real or not but she finally nodded and let him in. "Have a seat on the couch, would you like a drink sir?" Lauren asked motioning to the living room as she spoke. The officer took a seat and shook his head looking solemn. "I'm sorry sweetie but I think we should talk. Are you sure you're the only one here? No babysitter or anything?" He asked looking around the room as if he didn't believe she was left home all alone. "Yes sir, just me and Melissa my baby sister. Daddy leaves us alone all the time. It's not like I'm a baby or anything." Just then a reddish shape came barreling through the back door barking widly and jumping up at Lauren. "Oh hey Blaze, easy there boy." The growlithe yipped happily and licked her face then turned to sniff the officer. "Don't worry Blaze is very friendly he won't bite." Lauren said taking a seat next to the officer. Blaze let the officer pet him then he raced back to the kitchen for his breakfast. Lauren giggled and turned to the officer curious as to what his business here was. "Ok so what's wrong with daddy, did he get a ticket or put in jail? He's not hurt is he?" Lauren asked tentatively slightly worried what the answer would be. The officer regarded her a moment before lowering his gaze. "Yes your daddy was hurt, very very badly. He crashed into another car last night." He hesitated meeting her eyes which were filling slowly with tears. He hated having to tell her this, he preferred to tell adults this sort of thing but the girl was the only relative they knew of. "Sweetie, your daddy, he died in the crash last night. I'm very sorry..." ... Lauren felt more than just water on her face now, tears were flowing freely with the swirling shower water. They had told her she and her sister were going to have to be put in an orphanage and would be separated as she was so much older than her. The growlithe would be sent to a Pokemon Center to be cared for until they could find a home for him. The officer had called to make all the arrangements. Lauren hadn't known what to do. So she ran away. She took her sister, some of her father's money he had hidden in his room, and her Pokemon gear and ran away. She'd gotten this apartment and managed to keep the owner from finding out by agreeing to pay a higher rent than usual. And ever since it had just been her and Melissa. She dropped out of school and out of sight lying about her age and taking any job anyone would give her. It wasn't easy, once or twice she'd nearly been dragged off to the orphanage but she was a clever girl and always managed to slip away. Life got easier as her sister got older and she did. People asked fewer questions, her sister was learning to take care of herself, and the jobs paid more, plus the owner lowered their rent as she was always on time and always paid in full. Lauren blinked her eyes the water had turned cold and she was just leaning against the wall mind wandering. She straightened and turned off the water then got out and began to towel off. Quickly she changed into her pjs and quietly slipped back into the main room. She brushed her own teeth and checked their bags, most their meager belongings all packed up. She picked up the bag holding her old Pokemon gear wondering if it was still usable as she was sure she couldn't afford to buy new ones. Lauren set the bag back down then turned to the kitchenette and dumped the zenny into a money pouch. They would get started early. She'd been planning this day for sometime now. It was a bit unethical to bring one's baby sister along but she couldn't leave her alone and she felt they both needed the journey. It wouldn't be easy she knew, it could even be quite dangerous but this was not life they were living, this was just surviving. She rarely got to see her sister and was always working. No more, it was now time she took her life back for both her and her sister. This journey would be for both of them to bond as sisters and to grow in strength. Lady looked up at her as she finally crawled into bed and cuddled up to her sister. Lady stretched and moved over to curl right above their heads on their pillows. Lauren giggled and stroked the skitty. She would come to, for Melissa's sake. She was after all Melissa's Pokemon and since she didn't have a license to battle as she was only six, the skitty was considered just a companion Pokemon illegal to use in battles. That was fine, Lauren would handle all of that with the new Pokemon she got tomorrow. It took awhile for her to fall asleep, after all it was only a few hours until her dream finally became a reality. --- Morning dawned and Melissa was the first to wake. She let out a happy squeal and bounced on the bed trying to wake her slumbering sister. "Lauren! It's morning! Time to go!" She cried. Lady yowled in protest and jumped from the rocking bed. She leaped gracefully into one of the chairs and watched the girl on the bed for awhile. Humans were such strange things. Lauren groaned and snaked a hand out grabbing her sister's ankle causing her to topple over on top of her. Melissa laughed and struggled free. They had a brief tickle fight before both finally scrambled free of the covers. "Melissa you're gonna get it one of these days you know that?" Lauren said picking her sister up and twirling her. Melissa laughed and hugged her sister. Lauren set her down and grabbed the last of the food they had, a couple of pop tarts and stuck them in the micro letting them heat up a bit. "Well go get dressed!" Lauren said noticing Melissa was just standing there watching her. Melissa grinned and ran over to her bag pulling out a pair of white jeans and a bight pink top with a skitty printed on the front. The micro dinged and Lauren grabbed the poptarts handing one to her sister and begining to munch on the other. She pulled out their last can of Pokemon food for skitty and dumped it onto a paper plate. "Sorry Lady but we're not coming back so got everything put away." Lady wrinkled her nose but went and ate hungrily. Lauren smiled and finished her poptart then got dressed pulling on an old pair of black legging then on top of that a worn pair of jeans with a hole in one knee, a loose green sweater over a sleeveless white turtle neck and a charcoal gray hoddie for a jacket. It was winter after all and was pretty cold out. "Don't forget your jacket Lissa." Lauren told her as Melissa finished her poptart and picked up her bag. She sighed nodding. "Don't worry sis I know." She pulled on a heavy light blue jacket and zipped it up. Lauren handed her a pair of white gloves, hat and scarf. "And hang on to these in case you get cold." Lauren instructed as she put on her own pair of black and gray woolen gloves, scarf and hat. They packed light having only a backpack each and Lauren's Pokemon bag as she called it which would carry all her necessary Pokemon items and her Pokemon of course. They checked the room taking one last look at what had been their home for the last six years. Both girls weren't certain where the future would lead them but if had to be better than this. Yet there was a sense of sadness at leaving the only home they'd known in such a long time. "Come on Lissa, we've got journey to get started." Lauren said looking down at Melissa. Lady was snuggled inside the little girl's coat perfectly content. Lauren chuckled and took her sister's hand as they headed out the lobby and on towards the Pokemon Lab. (( I asked about having her sister and the pokemon tag along as companions in my intro post here in case anyone asks. Hehe sorry about it being so long, hadn't intended on it. )) |

It's not worth it.

Great job! I liked it. (0.3 :gexp) The amount of zenni that Lauren had collected was a nice sum, and would be able to support the two sisters for awhile on their journey. It totaled to 5,000 zenni, and was definitely a count to be proud of. Buried along with the other supplies, Lauren and Melissa would find a Poketech and an Escape Rope, a small device with three charges on it. All this was sure to help them along the way. |
