((Well...here goes nothing. Kind of a freeform, so to speak. Attempting to explain the reason why Ben would be starting with a Growlithe instead of one ofthe standard starters...))

Crickets chirped softly in the evening air, and a gentle breeze danced through the trees of Little Hillmoss. It was nearly midnight, and most of the town was sleeping by now. A young man stood at his bedroom window, head tilted slightly as though listening. He was tall, around six foot two, with light sandy brown hair cut relatively short. Oddly enough, he was wearing a set of dark sunglasses, even though it was far too dark for them to be necessary. One hand rested on the head of a Growlithe looking out the same window, ears pricked curiously. Her eyes darted about the dark night restlessly, while the young man merely held his listening pose.

So, all clear, you think? I dont hear anyone. He broke the silence after a minute or two of silence, patting the furry head before pulling back in through the window. The Growlithe pulled back with an soft whine, before letting out a soft negatory bark. Good. Im sick of trying to argue with them. The human stepped back into the room, which was much neater than you would expect a teenagers room to be, the hardwood floor spotless. A high school diploma hung on the wall, framed, as well as a number of awards, all awarded to Benjamin Daniel Summers.

He slowly made his way to the closet, hand tracing along the wood to the handle before pulling it open. He knelt in the doorway, placing a hand on the floor and moving it slowly to the right. One, two, three, fourhere we go. Bens hand paused on the fifth board and felt around for a few moments, before finding the catch and pulling the floor up. Reaching into the hole beneath, he pulled out a sturdy pack, already filled with the supplies hed purchased without his parents knowing. Theyd have thrown yet another fit if they knew about them.

Ben sighed. His parentscaring though they were, he was beginning to feel smothered by their over-protectiveness. It wasnt that they didnt mean wellbut he wanted out. And he was tired of trying to argue with them over the fact. Trouble was, they didnt understand him. They were worried about his handicap and didnt want to see him hurt. He shook his head. Hed lived with it all his life, and it wasnt really a handicap, no matter what they thought.

Half the summer hed tried to get them to agree to let him leave home. They kept coming up with excuses, or mom bursting into tears at the thoughthe was tired of trying to deal with it that way. Considering he was eighteen, they couldnt force him to stay, but they certainly could lay in the guilt to try and make him not go. And being as he didnt like upsetting anyone, it had worked every time. So, he was simply going to skip out on permission. There was nothing they could do to force him to return once hed already left

Growl..? The Growlithe padded over and put a paw on his knee. He heard the concern and smiled, patting her in reassurance, still looking vacantly into the closet. However, since he had been doing that the entire time hed been feeling around on the floorboards, it was certainly a bit odd. The canine pokemon sighed and put her head in his lap, eyes rolling up to peer at her owners face, still not looking completely reassured.

Its okay JaxIm all right. He scratched her behind the ears, and she sighed again, eyes closing blissfully. Ben continued to scratch for a minute, just enjoying her company. She was one of the few good things that had come out of his parents protective instincts.

It might have been a lot simpler if hed just been born normal, he mused. But then, he would have missed out on Jax. Nobody really knew why, but Ben had been born without sight. It was frustrating to him to find people pitying him over it. He didnt feel any different, and the whole idea of sight was something hed never fully been able to understand. So he was missing out on colorsotherwise, he didnt see what the big deal was. Even so, he wasnt sure why color mattered either. Hed grown up as normal as could be expected. At least, by his point of view. His parents protectiveness notwithstanding, hed gone to school, and even graduated with honors. He hadnt been valedictorian, true, but sixth wasnt a bad place to be, either.

However, college wasnt an option as far as his parents were concerned. Leaving Little Hillmoss wasnt an option. Hed be picked on, laughed at and would ultimately fail because his parents werent there. At least, thats how they reasoned it. Ben felt differently. Hadnt they let him take Judo for self defense? He was rather good at it, actually, after ten years of training. So the idea of being bullied or picked on was a little silly. His parents hadnt earned his various honors in high school, so where he would fail, he couldnt tell either.

He stood, patting Jax one last time before pulling out a small red and white sphere. The Growlithes ears flattened and she whined, protestingly. Its just for a little while, Jaxyour nails click on the hardwood. Once were out of sight of the house, all right? Jax whined again, but didnt fight the red beam that sucked her into the ball. Ben sighed and shouldered the pack, closing the closet door before making his way quietly to the door leading to the rest of the house. Opening it carefully, he listened for anything out of the ordinary.

His fathers snores were reassuring, and he slipped out into the hall stealthily, closing the door behind him with only the faintest of clicks. He slipped through the house, so familiar with the layout he no longer even needed to count his steps or feel along the wall to find the doorways. He sidetracked long enough to leave a note on the kitchen table stating that hed left before slipping out the back door. Once outside, he pulled the cane out of his back and set off. A block down the road, Ben released Jax once more and patted her reassuringly. See?

He sighed one last time and set off for the road out of town. His parents probably hadnt anticipated him considering this route, and with Jax, he wouldnt have to stop at the lab to get a pokemon even, which should confuse matters further. Nevermind that the Growlithe was merely supposed to be a guide canineBen had been working with her occasionally in preparation for hitting the road in this fashion. His parents certainly couldnt have anticipated this, or they never would have gotten her for his sixteenth birthday.

He smiled as Jax paced beside him. It may not be the path hed planned for himself either, but it could certainly prove interesting, and the less predictable, the better. The harder he was to track, the less likely it was that his family would be able to guilt him into returning yet again.

Awesome. Awesome awesome. Glad you're here. Can I suggest that it's better to avoid the wall-of-text phenomenon, and double-spacing your paragraphs if you're writing a lot would be helpful to the mods.

I approve your starting with the growlithe whole-heartedly. She'll be level 5, of course, and start with, say... 5 happiness.

Your hoarded supplies comprise 5000z, a poketch, and an escape rope unit with 3 charges. Good to have you, hope you stick around.

*double spaces* Yeah, you can suggest that. I usually fix that after writing things up in word...donno why I forgot this time. Guess I was in a little too much of a hurry when I posted it. *chuckles* Thank you.

Edit: Also, should I assume I don't start with the pokedex por pokeballs you get at the lab, and/or should I make a post there as well anyhow?

Your choice, but doesn't it contradict what you just wrote to go to the lab to collect those things? You can have them if you want them, but you will have to post there to get them.

It does, I just wanted to be sure whether or not I'd have the items if I didn't stop. Since I'm not planning on contrtadicting the above (unless I'd had to), I will deal with starting without such. *chuckles* May have to find a way to get a pokedex at a later date, or something, though. :)
