I know youll be puttin that back, chile. The quietly condescending voice seemed to come out of nowhere, causing Lydia to halt her rapid steps and cast her startled blue eyes backward, searching for the source. excuse me? she ventured, probing the darkness with her timid voice and slowly backing toward the nearest exit. A rasping cough, the kind that seems to go on forever and makes you feel like death is forcing its way painfully up your throat, brought her attention to some overlooked corner, twisted and wedged into an alley that shouldnt have had any corners at all. Is somebody there? she inquired in a slightly more forceful (and increasingly alarmed) tone, though she could already make out the dark, hunched shape cowering near a boulder. Thats my purse, and Ill be wantin it back. The hunched figure spoke again, in a voice croakily trying to recover from the brutal coughing attack. Now. Suddenly Lydia was feeling rather ill herself, though for an entirely different reason. She hastily stuffed a conspicuously lumpy purse behind her back, and without bothering to reply to the stranger she turned and ran. Unfortunately for her, a very large boulder that certainly hadnt been there a moment ago got in her way, and she fell rather rudely backward, hitting her head on the pavement and getting something mysterious and sticky tangled in her perfectly straight, long brunette hair. Ughh Lydia sat up a tiny bit, resting on her elbow and feeling about on her skull for what would surely develop into an undignified lump. She sniffed and whimpered a bit, then turned to give the renegade boulder a vicious glare. However, in the tradition of renegade boulders, it was already gone and she could now see clearly to the end of the alley. But she could do nothing more than stammer soundlessly, now thoroughly disoriented and wanting only to be somewhere sensible; someplace where boulders didnt move and hunched figures didnt ambush you. In fact, it might be even better if hunched figures didnt exist at all. She was brought slowly (and rather stupidly) back to reality by the jingling of coins somewhere behind her. Despite all her instincts telling her to run, Lydia craned her neck backward to investigate the sound. Instinct hadnt done her much good yet tonight, anyhow. Surely enough, there stood the hunched figure, digging through what was apparently its purse. Behind the figure (and this was cause for much hysteria in Lydias mind) stood the boulder, which seemed to have grown limbs, a head, and two rather large and impressive jets. Once again, a whimper was all she could manage. Hush, you big baby. If yer old enough to be stealin purses than yer old enough to get caught. The figure stopped to analyze her. You dont much look like a thief, but that gum in yer hairs a good start if yer tryin to become one. Lydia shot her hand back to examine her disheveled hair, grimacing when she found the lump of gum. Then she got indignant. Excuse me, now, whos to say Im not already like a a thief queen, or something for all you know. Your purse was perfectly easy to steal, it was just laying there at the opening of the alley! And I am sixteen years old and very mature for my age! She finished this off with a dignified sniff, rising to her feet and trying to manage all the superiority that a disoriented and embarrassed teenager is capable of. Which, surprisingly or not, happens to be quite a lot. For a moment there was complete silence and stillness in the alley (save for the slight shifting of the boulder, but Lydia pretended not to notice that.) Then, there was a sudden noise like a bone snapping, followed immediately by what sounded like a dozen coconuts rattling around inside a bamboo cage. It took Lydia quite some time to realize she was listening to laughter (she only really figured it out because the hunched figure was clutching its ribs and rolling about on the floor of the alley.) I really dont see whats so funny. She was genuinely offended, biting her tongue to restrain the humiliated tears that were stinging behind her eyes somewhere. I think I should leave. Before she could turn to go, however, the laughter chortled to a stop and the figure shot to its feet with more agility than you would think someone with a hunch would be capable of. Not so fast, chile. I didnt mean to insult you. Here there was a pause and the sound of strangled laughter. Finally, the figure cleared its throat and resumed. Yer not filthy, mangy, or dumb, all of which are fine it struggled to find the correct term, thiefly qualities. Now, fer the sake of fair sport I suppose you could be some sort of a what did you call it? A thief queen. Lydia blushed, dropping her stormy gaze to the ground and scuffing her foot rather childishly. Theres no need to rub it in. I know Im not much of a thief. Whats yer name, and why didja need my money? The figure inquired, no trace of hostility in its tone. It was close enough now for her to discern that the it was actually a him. And a rather old him, at that. Hmmm? Lydia was startled at the question. She had been expecting more chastisement. Oh well, Im Lydia. I sort of ran away. There was a moment of silence, so she hurriedly continued. I know it seems sort of stupid and all, poor little rich girl running away from her silly little life, but Oh, I cant really explain myself properly. Its much too long a story. With no hint of amusement this time, only quiet introspection, the figure nodded. I spose I understand. I was all alone at yer age, myself. So youll be tryin to make it on yer own, I guess. Oh, yes! Lydia nodded enthusiastically. I know itll be tough, I dont expect it to be easy, but Im determined to be independent. Im looking for something, you see, and its my quest to find it. I want to experience the world, I hate being sheltered from everything. She paused to quell the note of anger that had come into her voice. Of course I realize starting off as a clumsy thief might not have been the best decision. She began pulling the lump of gum from her hair, smiling sheepishly. No more thievin for you. And I mean that. Ever thought o somethin respectable like Pokemon Trainin? Its a good way to git yerself started, till you figure out where yer goin. The figure hesitated a moment, then threw the purse at Lydias feet. You may as well have it. I dont need it no more. I hope you find whatever it is yer lookin fer, Lydia. Dumbfounded at the turn of events, she stooped to pick up the purse (which upon closer examination was more of a cross between a briefcase and a backpack.) When she looked up again, the figure was gone, but the boulder was staring at her with big, beady eyes. Blast it said, licking its lips in a way that boulders shouldnt be capable of. Without pausing to think, Lydia turned tail and ran toward the exit. Thankfully this time, nothing decided to block her path. When she was what she judged to be a safe enough distance away (about two miles) from the strange alley and its stranger inhabitants, she stopped to catch her breath and to investigate the contents of the odd purse. |

A quick search of the purse revealed that it contained 4200z, and a nice little PokeTech. |
