Mummy! Look at that boy over there! The excited girl dragged her smiling mother over to the boy she had just mentioned. His clothes were different from most, yet he didnt look as if he was out of place. He looked perfectly at home standing on the streets, throwing a few balls expertly into the air, juggling them with ease. There were four of them in all. Ronan smiled to himself as he saw the girl and her mother approaching. Others were also beginning to take some notice of the juggling boy as he kicked off his act. Juggling was a nice easy way to start the performance, and it usually attracted easy attention, after all, when they saw colourful balls were flying in the air out of the corner of their eye, most people looked up from what they were doing and took a closer peek. And that was exactly what Ronan wanted. The more paying attention when he began his actual act, the better. It was also extra rewarding when large numbers of children gathered, with their parents in tow. After the enthralling performance, the parents would almost undoubtedly be pestered by their children, to donate at least something to the black top hat that stood at his feet, upturned, waiting for money.

Ronan continued, nodding to the young girl, then to the three remaining balls on the ground next to him. Go on, pick them up, and throw them to me slowly, one by one. The young child did as she was told, hands trembling slightly from excitement as she tossed the first ball to him. The aim wasnt perfect, but he caught it without much effort. The next two were slightly better, as the girl seemed to develop the knack for it. Ronan inclined his head to her, thanking her for her expert help, before tossing the seven balls high into the air, sweeping up the hat and letting them all fall in one after the other.

As he bowed, the gentle sounds of applause told him that a fair few people had gathered. Time to begin the magic then, I guess The boy didnt really have any set program, he interspersed the simple tricks with the complex ones, usually improvising the routine as he went. That way, if someone happened to pass by again and again, they wouldnt be bored by the same act. He never performed everything within his vast arsenal of tricks in one showing either, only a handful each time.

He noticed to a young boy in the audience, who had squirmed his way to the fore, handing him a pack of cards, shuffling it before he did so. Here, take any card out from it. As the boys head was bent over the pack of cards, choosing one, Ronan smiled, sweeping his hand over his head, to reveal a small peanut sitting on top of his jet black hair. The audience laughed, the boy, blissfully unaware, held up the card he had chosen for them to see. As Ronan allowed the boy to place the card back in the deck, he chuckled, pointing to the boys hair. You might want to get that off you know. The audience could only burst out laughing again at the look of absolute bewilderment on the young volunteers face as he stared at the peanut that had miraculously appeared on his head. Meanwhile, Ronan handed the deck back to the boy. Okay, my nutty friend, take any card from the deck, and it will be the one you chose just then. The boy gave him a disbelieving look, to which Ronan only gave a mysterious smile. Somewhat hesitantly, the boy picked out a card from the deck, and upon looking at it, gave a squeal of delight. Ronan grabbed it from his hand, and flourished it at the audience, who started clapping, as did the young boy.

The next trick involved ribbons. Lots and lots of them. Metres upon metres worth. Again, the younger portion of the audience squealed and clapped in glee as they saw the magician apparently produce lengths and lengths of colourful ribbon from their parents ears, mouths, clothes, pockets. The show continued, Ronan bringing out the cards again, as well as various other props. Time and time again, the audience were awed by his exceptional sleight of hand skills, his seemingly infallible mind-reading abilities, and his apparently magical powers.

Finally, the performance drew to a close. As he took his last bows, Ronan motioned to the hat on the ground. He didnt bother to say anything further to convince them. Experience had cautioned him against that. Many people out there pretended to be in need, and sure enough, the ones who always buttered it up the most, the ones who came up with the most touching tales, they were the ones who were often deceiving. And so, Ronans policy was that he wouldnt beg people for money after they watched his show. He had the utmost confidence in his skills, and knew that if he didnt beg, what he received would have been for his performance. He smiled warmly at the kids who had been a part of the show as they came up, hands full of money which their parents had bestowed upon them.

Okay, so he wasnt completely shameless. But rather than outright begging, he simply asked for money in a more subtle way. After all, children could be said to have a very big influence on their parents, even more so when they were spoilt. So, his main targets in his performances were the little ones, knowing full well that if they were sent into fits of elation, that their parents were sure to pay up afterwards. As he bowed in gratitude to the last of the benefactors, he scooped up the hat to count the money. Not a bad haul It wasnt the best work he had ever done, but still, it was quite a decent amount for the one performance. He collected his various props and belongings, threw them into the capacious shoulder bag he often carried and headed off. First he visited the grocery store, both to buy some food, and to buy some more peanuts and other such things for his act. He wasnt overly particular over things like this. Anything small, easy to conceal, and was on special, thats what he bought. After all, simple tricks like that didnt require a specific ingredient.

As he left the store, munching on an apple, Ronan headed back to the room he rented, taking his bag off and flopping himself on the bed. Tonight was going to be his last night here. He had decided, after some period of thinking, that it wouldnt do to just wake up everyday and perform on the streets for the rest of his life. He wanted to expand his horizons more, and of course, there was the dream of working with and capturing every Psychic and Ghost Pokemon alive. They were, after all, the ones most closely related to magic, trickery and illusions. Sighing, he turned onto one side, watching the sun set. These past few years, lodging in the upstairs room of an elderly couple, hadnt been an ideal life, but it wasnt something he regretted either. They had been nice company, in their own quiet way, and of course, they had been kind enough to let him stay for a reduced price. Well, they had even offered to keep him for free, but Ronan had refused to rely on charity to survive. And it had worked so far.

He heard the sounds of the front door being opened. His hosts were back. He didn't bother to go downstairs though. They knew he was leaving in the morning. They had been informed. Ronan was no good at saying goodbyes, and he didn't really want to face that challenge. If they were going to come up and talk to him, then fine. He had already intruded on their kindness too much, in his opinion, and he didn't really want to expect any more from them. That haul from today's performance would hopefully be enough.
