Montenegro Starts Out; Let's Try This Again...

"Montenegro? Are you awake?" came the kind voice of Katrina's mother.

Montenegro instantly snapped awake, feeling extremely wired. He slid quietly out of bed in the small room and, in one fluid motion, slipped into his clothes. He ran his hand through his brown hair, making it look just as messy as it always did. A quick glance in the mirror was all he needed to assure himself of his appearence. He picked up his bag and headed for the door, quickly running through his mind to see if he was forgetting anything.

Today was the day of the big journey. Montenegro, his friend Katrina, and 19 other lucky students from Hillmoss High would be partaking in a new educational program: a program that allowed them to travel with their friends and learn in the wilderness, while still allowing for Pokemon training to occur. This opportunity was a great chance for many students to escape the boring life of small town living, and Montenegro was planning to take this and use it to his full advantage.

An absent-minded boy, Montenegro was still very caring and friendly. He never seemed to get angry; nothing ever went so wrong that he would stop smiling. His intelligence and wisdom were great, and lots of people would go to him for advice. However, his common sense was lacking, and simple things were sometimes hard for him to comprehend. He was also very forgetful, constantly not doing homework assignments or forgetting to do things. Though he was reliable most of the time, these random bouts of amnesia plagued him, and if it weren't for the fact that he was carefree to the point of complete indifference, he might have become frustrated.

Montenegro had been found a few years previous, wandering around in the grasslands around the town. The only thing he could clearly remember was his name, and even that didn't seem to fit. After all, he was a short, scrawny white boy with brown hair and green eyes. Why on earth would any parent name a baby of that appearance Montenegro? Black Mountain? The entire town took sympathy on the boy, but it was the Sanders family that took him under their roof where he quickly made friends with Katrina Sanders, who was of the same age.

In school, he quickly proved that he was among the smartest people to ever live inside the town. He may have even been the valedictorian of the class, but his constant forgetting of tests and homework caused his grades to slip into the high ninties. So, instead, the title had gone to Katrina for three years in a row.

He mosied into the kitchen where the entire Sanders family was already enjoying some breakfast. Katrina, her mother and father, and toddler brother, Kirin, briefly looked up in greeting and her mother made a half-hearted attempt at getting him to come eat, but that was futile. For every single day as long as they could remember, Montenegro's ritual involved getting up, going outside, staring at the sunrise, and THEN coming in for some breakfast. Today was no different. When he finally did join them, he ate a modest three pancakes with plenty of syrup and two glasses of milk before he stood up.

"Thank you for all of your hospitality, Mr. and Mrs. Sanders," he said, bowing respectfully so that his glasses almost fell off, "I hope to repay it someday."

"Now, now," said Mrs. Sanders, "You just go and have an adventure with your friends. Ramirez and Teruhiko should be arriving to pick you up soon."

"Yeah, come on," said Katrina, hugging her father and brother one last time, "We've got a long day ahead of us."

"Well, bye then," said Montenegro as he and Katrina headed for the front door.
