Kira wasn't quite sure what it was, but something definately was invading the blissful sleep she was trying so hard to cling to. The more she tried to ignore it, the more annoying the sound seemed to get. Finally a sleepy thought formed in her mind before a frizzy haired head poked out from her blankets. Alarm clock...must die. Reaching out, her hand should have hit the alarm, ending its repettive electronic beeps, but all she hit was the top of the nightstand. Confused she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and realized the sound was coming from the other side of the room, and there was a very faint muffled snickering just above it... which was soon silenced by her pillow smacking her brother in the face and knocking him over. "Gah! Are you trying to kill me?" He feigned sounding wounded that his little sister could be so mean to him. "Sometimes, I wonder if you really can see and you just fake it to get out of mowing the yard." He grinned and killed the alarm, tossing the pillow next to her. "Trust me, I don't need to see you, I can smell you from over here." Kira wrinkled her nose and tried straightening her bed head so it wouldn't be all tangled later. "Ever hear of a shower? There's this wonderful advance in society called hygene you know." She made a cute little bratty sister face at him. Not that he really did smell, it's just how most mornings started out, the banter of friendly fire back and forth that she was really going to miss... Just as soon as she worked up the courage to tell her parents what she had in mind. "Dad said don't worry about coming straight down, it's supposed to be a slow day and we have most of the morning prep done." With that, he closed the door so she could get ready in private and headed downstairs to the small bakery Kira's family ran. After taking her time showering, putting her hair up in a ponytail, and getting dressed (Stuff was arranged in her closet and dresser by color, based on the drawer or section of the closet. She had a general idea of what she was wearing, not that she actually knew what the colors looked like mind you), she pulled out the hiking backpack she had gotten several years back for her birthday. "Well, I guess this is kind of going to be like camping... just not as easy." Sighing quietly, not looking forward to the task of telling her parents she wanted to be a trainer, she put several days worth of clothes and necessities in the various pouches, organizing everything so she could access them without having to empty the whole pack. Making her way to the hallway (she had the inside of the house and shop memorized step for step by now) she walked down the stairs, wondering if this was going to be the last time she would hold the handrail for a long while. The closer she got to the shop part of the first floor of the house, she could smell the fresh doughnuts, pastries, and cinnamon rolls her parents had made for this morning's customers, and could catch hints of the bread baking in the back for later in the day. This only made her more nervous thinking about how after today, she would be waking up to different sounds, different smells, and not in her room. She stopped just inside the door of the kitchen, and nearly ran into her brother who had been coming to check on her. "Hey, about time. Mom wants you to... something wrong?" He glanced at the pack hanging on her shoulders and had a pretty good idea what was going on. "Actually, you should talk to her, I'll go sweep a hall or something. Good luck squirt." Moving aside to let her past, he patted the top of her head, which she hated, almost as much as being called 'squirt'. She was a little sensitive about being a bit short for her age, and it made her feel like a little kid. "Gah, don't call me that you ogre. I'm not short, you people are just way too tall." She smiled at him to let him know that she wasn't mad about it. Having gained a bit of courage from knowing her brother seemed supportive of her decision, she stepped into the kitchen where she could hear her parents talking about what the special of the day was going to be. Clearing her throat, she closed her eyes and blurted out, "Momdadiwanttobeapokémontrainer!" before calming down a little and actually using more than one really long word this time. "Mom, dad...I want to be a pokémon trainer..." |

I know, said Mom. It was with a simple statement like that which she could turn nerves and anxiety into butter. Her voice was soft, motherly, warm like bread, but with a hint of world-weariness that bringing up Kira and her brother had given her. Kiras Dad, his touch firm and his skin rough, took his daughter by the hand. We got you some things, kid. All top of the range. Essential training gear. He didnt sound overly worried about anything, which showed just how nervous about this he really was. Managing to distract himself by showing Kira her new trainer devices, Dad went on without breaking this voice. This one heres a Poketch. Has a Braille touch pad and works on voice commands too. Comes with a Total-Aural mode thats perfect for you. Will tell you everything you need to know about where youre going. He let Kira hold the sleek clam-shell device and watched her for a moment, then feeling those pesky emotions trying to push through his wall of manliness quickly grabbed her other hand and give her the second machine. This is an Escape Rope. Has a trigger here, and comes with three charges. Will get you back to town in a jiffy. Real quick like. Get you straight home. Yeah and then Dad swallowed audibly, having run out of things to say and places to hide. But there was still Mom, and she could at least muffle his sobbing cries if he stayed behind her for the rest of the morning. And weve got some zenni for you too, she said, voice wet. Youll need it if youre to be a trainer. Now Kira was given a small leather pouch, fastened by a button, and inside it was 3800z And then there was just silence for a while. Kira could feel her parents standing there. Waiting. Worried. Proud. She probably heard her Dad struggling to breathe while trying not to burst into tears. And her mother was probably smiling. The smell of bread lingered.

Kira blinked, rather in shock about...normal they seemed to be acting before it set in that they really were going to let her go. Wait a minute...they knew I was... She suddenly remembered her brother's sudden urge to go be somewhere other than the kitchen, and had a pretty good idea who had been behind convincing her parents to be even more prepared for this than Kira was. Her father's emotions were bleeding through louder in his voice than one normally would hear, but Kira knew his voice like the inside of this house, and the struggle she could hear in it almost changed her mind on leaving. She suddenly seemed to feel the tiny weight of the Pokétech in her hands like an anchor, holding her decision to leave against the storm of emotions. Clutching it tightly she slipped the Tech into her pocket, then placed the escape rope and money pouch into one of the smaller pockets on the left (as you're wearing it) side of the backpack. She couldn't even find the words she wanted to say right now, afraid if she did, it might break the fragile check everyone had on their emotions, and that she wouldn't have the courage to go if that happened. She grabbed her family in a deathgrip hug that lasted for several minutes, before forcing herself to let go and smile as confidently as she could at them. As she started to turn to leave, she seemed to finally find the words that seemed the right thing to say. "Don't worry, I may not be able to see where I'm headed, but I think you raised me strong enough to get there." It was exactly those words that they all needed to hear. I'll be just fine, I've gotten this far... let's see how far I can keep going. Her brother, who had been just outside the hallway the entire time, wondered to himself how his sister always seemed to be more like the older sibling than he was. "C'mon squirt, I'll help you get to the lab. But after that, it's your own path. Deal?" "Deal... just remember, call me squirt again I'll tie your feet around your head you big ogre." She giggled as they headed out the door of the bakery, suddenly feeling alot better about everything. "Ogre? Is that anyway to treat the big brother who loves you and has pics of you with possibly the worst case of bed head ever?" "Uwaah?! You do not! I swear if you do..." There was a muffled 'thwack' as the two started passing out of earshot of their parents, followed by the two of them laughing. "You think we made the right decision, to let her go?" He father stood there, his shoulders a bit tense from keeping his composure as he turned his head to his wife, hoping to at least hear say yes, even if it wasn't true. "You know, it was her decision, and we have to trust she'll be fine, cause we raised her to stand on her own feet." And with that, Kira's uncertain destiny begins... |
