Seize every opportunity, because you dont know which one will be your last. Dirk Grayson always seemed to remember that phrase. He wasnt sure where it had come from, though there werent very many possibilities. He never watched television, because he never had one. He certainly wasnt told it by a relative, since as far as he knew, he didnt have any of those either. The phrase must have come from a book, but that was all Dirk could discern from his memory. Dirk had read a fair amount of books. He read them during the day, when the forest was particularly quiet. Sometimes hed read them during the night, when he had a spare candle. However, Dirk did get around to reading quite a few books, probably since he enjoyed them so much. They provided an escape, as well as a good opportunity to think. Dirk never did act on anything he read though, and it always seemed like he never did seize his opportunities. Dirk lived alone. He wasnt really an adult, not yet at least, since he was only sixteen. Despite his age, Dirk probably was more mature than most adults in the world, mostly because he had to be one. His only abode was a small, decrepit hut in the woods, slightly hidden from the view of the huge mansion about a quarter of a mile away. For the most part, Dirk stayed near his small home, though sometimes towards Little Hillmoss Town. Once in town though, there was little for Dirk to do other than scavenge for useful little trinkets strewn through the village. He would walk down the alleyways, eyes peeled, searching for anything useful. Sometimes he would find nothing, sometimes he might find something of value, a few zenni or a bit of food, for instance. When in town, Dirk usually didnt talk much with anyone, with one notable exception. He had one friend, Stanford Stuart. Though both were the same age, Stanford was quite the opposite of Dirk. Dirk was short, stocky, and well-worn from living outdoors while Stanford was thin and pale, with thick glasses. Stanford also lived in the mansion near Dirks hut. That was the main reason Dirk lived there, since Stanford would sneak off to give Dirk food or books from his library. The two had been friends quite a while, beginning when they were both quite young. However, their relationship was secret, since Stanfords parents would have never tolerated Dirk, believing him to be dangerous riff-raff. On this particular occasion, Dirk was alone in Little Hillmoss Town, wandering down the main road for once. It was a hot, dry morning, and dust from the road kept making Dirk squint or cough. As he walked down the street, he kept to the edge, just off the dirt. In the distance, he saw the sign for Professor Willows Pokemon Lab, though it wasnt of much interest. Dirk had some fascination with pokemon, but he had never owned one, nor had he ever really considered being a trainer. After all, he would need money to do that. This time, though, the sign looked a little different. Next to the worn, wooden sign with the name of the lab and an arrow point down a narrow, winding turnoff, there stood a new, metal sign. This sign piqued Dirks interest, for in distinct, bold letters, it said Professor Willow is now providing a free pokemon for all interested trainers. Dirk then remembered, he remembered to seize the opportunity for once. However, he was not going to walk into the lab of a famous professor right away. First, he would head back to his hut, take everything he would need, and then leave off to become a pokemon trainer. So, Dirk Grayson turned back towards his hut. In a rather uneventful journey, Dirk arrived at his little hovel. After briefly assessing his meager belongings, he gathered together everything he would need. He picked out a worn, ripped backpack along with some tattered clothing, and set off once more. This time, he rain into Stanford short after beginning his journey back to the lab. Where are you off to with all that stuff? Stanford asked inquisitively. I figure there isnt much left for me to do here, Dirk shrugged, Maybe I can put together as a pokemon trainer. Sounds like fun. Ill go with you! Stanford said excitedly, Itll be our own adventure. Dirk scowled at his friend. He wasnt looking for an adventure at all. He was looking for success. You stuck up, rich boy! he yelled angrily, Youve never had any sort of adventure. Youd never be able to live on your own. If thats how you want to put it, Stanford retorted, Whos been helping you all these years? Where have you been getting your food? Hasnt there been someone out there risking his parents wrath sneaking of to your little hovel? Get away from me! Dirk yelled. He turned away and started walking off towards the lab. Hearing footsteps behind him, he turned around to see Stanford, intent on follow. I told you to get away! shouted. He lashed out with his right fist, catching Stanford in the left eye, smashing his glasses. Stanford face showed an odd mix of anger, pain, and confusion as Dirk ran off, leaving him far behind. Dirk immediately regretted his actions. Stanford was nave, not ill-intentioned. He only wanted to help Dirk. Besides, Dirk did owe Stanford something, after receiving so much help. Dirk stopped and sat by the side of the road, trying to decide if this whole pokemon thing was worth it in the first place. Just then, he saw Stanford running back towards him, with his own shiny, new backpack. Stanford was quite tired, and he was almost wheezing as he tried to catch his breath. His eye was a sickly purple from where it had been punched earlier. However, Stanford looked determined to go with Dirk this time, and Dirk wasnt about to stop him. If you insist, you can come with me, Dirk sighed, but were leaving now. Thats okay, Stanford answered happily, Im ready to go. I even took some money along with some other useful items on my way. OOC: Stanford and Dirk will be traveling together, sort of as one trainer. I guess I just need a mod to say what was in the bag, and anything else they want to say. |
