Go on Cameron, you got him! Course I do! Now watch as I end this! Within the arena of Little Hillmoss Town two trainers stood locked in battle. On one side, a younger teen stood, around the age of 15, the signs of a beginning trainer on him and his un-evolved starting pokemon, a charmander. Behind him was a young girl, obviously his cheering section, large blue eyes that took in every aspect of the trainer with admiration and possibly hints of more than just that. Across from him stood an older trainer who looked to be around 19 or 20. A contrast to the boy who was still in the middle of his growth, this man looked like a young adult, just entering the threshold of the final stages of growth in to a full grown man. Behind him was a boy younger by two years, around seventeen and though he looked much younger than his companion, he was definitely on the verge of adulthood himself as well. The older of the two trainers looked back, obviously not even trying in this battle, his own pokemon, a Naetoru. Most trainers would be frozen solid at the idea of a fire type versus a grass type but this trainer didnt seem phased at all. In fact, he seemed more phased at his own companion, asking sharply, What, you not gonna cheer for me? Thats not very fair! The other boy looked up over his glasses, his face looking slightly incredulous at the fact that his friend was asking him that question. He rolled his eyes and said, Ill cheer when you need it. This is in the bag, so just stop toying with the kid, okay? I have studying to do. The man just laughed at this and shrugged, saying, Oh fine, whatever, have it your way. Ill finish it up quick so we can head home. Then turning viciously towards the younger trainer, his eyes flashed a kind of thunder and fire mixed that would send any lesser opponent groveling for mercy. The young trainer saw this and in an instant his confidence left him as he saw the sadistic look on his opponents face. With a smile, he closed his eyes and turned, simply saying, Alright Naetoru, Leaf Storm. With a nod, the grass type leapt in to the air, spinning around quickly before sending off a flurry of browning autumn leaves towards the charmander. The small pokemon was sent flying back by the attack, smashing in to the side of the arena, clearly beaten. The younger of the winning team just watched and sighed. But But But nothing. You had no chance. It doesnt take a genius to figure out that you were outmatched from the get go. Especially when he survived that flamethrower. You werent all that bad though. Just dont go around challenging everyone and anyone. Your pokemon only get hurt if you put them in a situation they cant win. And no trainer should ever put themselves above their pokemon, the younger of the older team said as he walked forward to the fainted charmander, applying a few potions to it so to recover its wounds. Youll have to take her to a pokemon center soon, so Id get to it right now. Anyway, feel free to come back around, its not like were banishing you. Just be more careful, alright? he said, his voice showing a tenderness and warmth that it only did when he was tending to pokemon. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ You did it again. Oh really? Didnt notice. And there ya go again. First youre cold as an iceberg and then all warm and sappy and crap. Whats with that? I already told you, I do better around pokemon than humans. You really have to let it go. Id rather not have this conversation. Fine, but still, why dont you become a trainer? I will when it appeals to me. Not until then. Ya, but youre so wrapped up in your mythology stuff that youll never be interested in actually training. You can name the myths and legends of so many legendary pokemon but not even begin to understand how battling pokemon works. I hate making them battle like that and suffer. Its not suffering. They enjoy it just as much as we do. Whatever, it doesnt matter in the end really. I enjoy doing research on legends, thats all. Doesnt mean I actually want to go out and find them. What about No. I said before, I dont want to have this conversation. The rest of the walk back to town was rather silent. The two just walked side by side, the older, looking over at the younger from time to time to check on him, but all he would see was the teen looking down at the ground as they walked. He hated it when he got like this, which was pretty much whenever they mentioned a certain part of his life that he didnt want to relive. Truthfully, the older didnt want to relive it either, even though the events he went through were nothing compared to the ones that his younger friend had gone through. He ended up just sighing, unable to do anything and just walking along side his friend to his house. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Im home, the younger teen said as he entered the small two person house. From within the den a young woman looked out, much too young to be the boys mother. However, the smile on her face and the way she hugged him made it seem almost the opposite. She smiled and embraced the teen, saying, Welcome home kiddo! How did it go? The boy smiled and hugged her back, saying, Jayce won again. It was obvious, though I wish he would stop accepting challenges he knows are going to turn in to slaughters. Jayce, now named, just looked at the kid and shrugged, only saying, Well pardon me for being nice enough to accept peoples challenges! He tone was serious but his face showed otherwise, making it obvious that he was just teasing the younger kid. So Marina, how did work at the lab go? Anything new to report? Jayce asked, looking up at the girl, who was still in the death grip hug of the other boy. Marina, obviously used to this, just smiled coyly and said, Yes. Obviously a game, Jayce started to play along, asking, And can you tell me? No. Why not? And with the final play of the game, Marina ended it by simply stating, Because its secret and the professor doesnt want us revealing things, especially not to 19-year old kids. Or 17-year old ones, in this ones case. She laughed at that and the dour look on Jayces face before patting the younger of the two on the head and saying, Alright go on up and get yourself ready for dinner, its at 5. The younger boy nodded, not looking up from the hug before turning and running upstairs. Marina just watched him go with a smile on her face, but as soon as he was gone from her site she immediately turned on Jayce, her look even scarier than his during the battle. You brought it up again, didnt you? she asked. Her words were slow and deliberate, each like a knife stab through the heart. Jayce just smiled sheepishly and said, W Well, i.. it just came up you see! I Its not His words were cut off by her slamming her arm against the wall next to him, which she currently almost had him pinned to. Listen, we have discussed this. You do NOT bring it up. He can barely let it go with the fact that he refuses to get rid of the stuff in his room, so we dont need to probe at the wound any farther, got me? I wont warn you again! Jayce nodded feverishly, his eyes wide with shock and fear as the woman let her arm up, letting him pass, which he did in a flash, moving to the door. You know, you could be a bit more understanding! You are my sister! Jayce said, looking at her, his tone making it impossible to tell whether he was joking or not. Ya, and you could be a bit more understanding of him, you are his best and ONLY friend if I have to remind you again. And I am his legal guardian until next year, so hes my kid. And even when he is legally independent, I still will be his mother in my mind and in his from what I can tell. And kid beats brother any time in importance and guardian beats brother literally if brother gets in way of kids development, capiche? Jayce just nodded before Marina smiled, her mood switching almost instantly as she said with a happy and girlish tone, Alrighty then! Glad thats settled! Say hi to mom and dad for me, mkay? All Jayce could do was sigh inwardly with relief to see his sister calmed down and nod with a smile. Sure thing! ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Within the confines of his room, the teen threw himself down on to his bed, staring blankly at the multiple pictures that blanketed the roof of the room and the walls, stapled and taped up. Some were blurry photographs, some were scientific printouts, but all of them had something in common. They all portrayed legendary pokemon of all shapes and sizes. And in the bookshelf next to his bed were books upon books of legends, myths and such, all around these same premise. However, one stuck out more than the rest, an old leather-bound volume titled, The Prince of the Sea. More worn than the rest yet kept in better shape, it was obvious to see that this was a book special to the boy. On the desk beside the book was a small laptop, chocked full of data from pokemon. He knew that as soon as he could, he would try and work for professor willow, regardless of what he had to do. He could be with pokemon for as long as he wanted, just alone with them, no humans to have to deal with. And he loved researching pokemon so much, it was his passion, the same passion that drove him to learn so much about those of the legendary sort. And beside that was a picture frame, two people within it, a woman and man who the boy resembled quite a bit. He looked at the picture for a second before turning back on to his side, staring at the wall away from it. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ It was an hour later when the boy finally emerged from his room after a long nap, slowly walking down the stairs towards the kitchen. His hair was disheveled as it always was, the brown strands covering his eyes slightly when he didnt comb it up and over. Marina looked up from the book she was reading to stare at the boy. Unlike him, her hair was vibrant, a vivacious red color almost like fire, and he was shorter than she, only 58 while she stood a good 60. However, she thought he looked nice even though he wasnt the most fit or skinny of kids, the kind of person whose personality would win him over where his looks could not win immediately. Welcome back kiddo. Have a nice nap? she asked, putting down the book, which actually was a bound report of different findings the lab had made recently, but she knew that he knew better than to try and look at it. He didnt really like the books she read anyway, so he wouldnt touch it even if it was a normal book. He smiled at her and nodded wordlessly, something he did from time to time. When he was a kid he would go mute for days on end and then start talking as if he had never done anything. And while his silent periods were less frequent now and shorter in duration, they still happened once in a while when he was feeling emotional. Well, dinners ready. Just let me grab it out of the oven, Marina said, but was quickly sent to the chair when the boy walked right past her and grabbed a pair of oven mitts to remove the food from the oven. Or you can. Either way is fine for me, she said with a chuckle, going back to her report as he started to put out portions on to each plate. He nodded back at her wordlessly, the smile on his face being all he needed to convey his feelings before placing the plates in front of both of them and starting to eat quickly with the happy look on his face. Marina watched him for a few moments before setting in to her own meal as well, not knowing what she was going to do with the kid. She knew that the times when he got like this meant no good, either he was exceedingly excited about something, that something being either new information on a legendary popping up or he was up to something. She just hoped that he had just realized that he was getting a new book today and wasn't planning anything. Because knowing her brother, the one thing he COULD be planning was not something she wanted to consider at this time in her or his life. As soon as dinner was finished, the teen quickly got up, grabbing both plates by himself and starting to wash them without any words being said by either of them. Marina didnt even have to ask him to do it; he just got right on it without even needing to be asked. Now she really knew he was up to something. As soon as he was done, he turned and nearly bolted out the door. But he was slow compared to Marina who had raised him for the last 10 years, and her arm reached his collar the instant he passed by her, she not even having to look up from her book. Alright, what is it that you want? she asked, looking up at him from the side of her eye. He just smiled sheepishly and held up a flyer announcing the release of a new book within the book store on Moltres, the legendary bird of fire. Here, she said with a smile as she reached beside her in to her bag and pulled out a small red book and handed it to the now wide eyed boy. He smiled at her and gave her a huge hug before running back upstairs to his room to read his new piece. Marina just watched him, her face betraying how she was feeling at that point. He always did this whenever something made him feel sad. Hed revert back to a more childish personality and dive in to books to forget about everything else. While others would see it as harmless, it meant something to Marina. And she always hated it when she felt this way. I really wish I could have stopped it all from happening kiddo But the past is the past, I just wish you could learn to let them go, she thought, going back to her book, her mind not focusing at all on the words on the page anymore. |

Hi, my name is Willis. Last name? I'm not sure. No one's ever told me. Kind of funny, don't you think? Anyway, I haven't always been like this, only for as long as I can actually remember. Another confusing statement, right? Well, I had better explain it all from the beginning. The very beginning. You see, when I was a kid, my parents were both great parents. They were also great researchers in the field of legendary pokemon. You could say I got my obsession from them. When I was five, something happened. They went on a trip and never came back. I waited a long time for them to come back. I don't think I've ever stopped waiting to tell you the truth. I was too young to remember my parents' last name and I always forgot what people used to call me. These days it's just Willis, even on official records. So, you can probably see why Im a bit weird. I was raised by Marina, who is fifteen years my senior. She was a great friend of my parents growing up and I think she does this as a favor to their memory. So, Marina is my mom mostly, and I can live with that, or at least I keep telling myself. I cant even remember what my real mom was like except by her picture and her books. Thats probably why I love legendary pokemon so much. Theyre my only link to my parents anymore. The books I read, I dont read them for myself, I read them for them, so that I can tell them if they come back, no scratch that, WHEN they come back. Other than Marina, I never have had many friends except for Jayce. I grew up alone with Marina, she having to go to the lab a lot. Thats why a lot of people think I love pokemon so much more than humans. Cant argue since I dont know myself. I had a sentret growing up. He was really adorable, but he passed away some time ago. Ever since then I have always been awkward around humans. I guess I just dont really get them at times. Why they are so obsessed with using such wonderful creatures for their own needs. It makes me sick to think about it. So, I just dont. I help pokemon out as much as I can. I hope to become someone totally dedicated to helping pokemon when I grow up. I want to be a researcher later on in life. Someone who researches pokemon and helps them get past diseases and such. I also want to do research on the legendary pokemon, just out of interest. Everyone thinks I should go on a pokemon quest and become a trainer to see the world. Well, everyone except Marina. Shes overprotective but I love her for it. And, truthfully, I dont want to become a trainer. Training is dumb. I hate it. The battle pokemon for their own pride. I only watch Jayces battles because I like him. The strategy is nice at points, but other than that, nothing about it appeals to me. Id rather get closer to a pokemon with my emotions. My favorite pokemon is Manaphy, the legendary Prince of the Sea. I want to meet one some day so badly. I dont care about capturing it, just seeing it and meeting it would be wonderful. I think its because my mom used to read me a bedtime story about the sea crown and Manaphy every night that I have become such a fan. People arent even sure if any are left alive. I want to prove them wrong. But I cant. I can only hope that someday someone else will find it and give it a proper home if it needs one or let it roam free if it can. For me, I need to stay here. I need to wait for my parents to come home. I dont want to be away when they return. I want to see them first. I want to tell them all the things I have learned. But most of all, I want them to just be here, safe and sound. But... Should I wait for them any longer? Or... maybe... With the final sounds of the scratching of a pencil on paper finished, the pencil was set down on to the table and the teen staring at it, Willis, simply read over the letter to no-one one last time before taking it in his hands and crumpling it up. The window open, he threw it with all of his might as far as he could, off in to the distance away from the second story window he had, off in to the thick grass that lay behind the house. Staring out the window for a few seconds, he thought over it before closing it one more time. It had become a ritual. Write what he knew every night and then throw it out. He started to figure out more and more as he did, but still go no where. Then, with a sigh, he took the new red book from his desk, sat down on his bed and started to read, surrounded by memories of the parents who were long gone from his own. ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Hey Willis, youre up! You usually dont get up this early when you just got a new book, Marina said as she looked up from her morning coffee. Willis, looking slightly more tired than usually just nodded and said, Ya, forgot to turn off my alarm Better this way I guess, and slumped towards the refrigerator to get something to eat. Marina watched him carefully, noting that he was talking again, which was always a good thing when it came to him. She took another sip as he sat down across from her, pouring himself a bowl of cereal. He was talking, but being oddly silent for some particular reason that she couldnt quite understand. Unless Alright, whats on your mind this time? she asked calmly as she placed the coffee cup back down, And I dont want any excuses like last night. You really werent being like that because of the book, were you? She watched with an amused look as Willis almost chocked on his cereal, having to take a few seconds to actually swallow it. Coughing, he looked up at her with amazed eyes, wondering how she knew that it hadnt really been about the book the night before. Almost like reading his mind, Marina laughed, Well, if you had wanted it that badly you would have gotten it before you came home. You always do. And you know me. Im hypersensitive to breaks in routines. Now spill it. Her chin on her hands, she just stared at him, the kind of stare that had made her brother so fearful of her last night, yet this time it had a much more concerned air to it, though that didnt alleviate just how frightening it was. Umm I was thinking about my parents. It obviously hadnt been the reply that Marina was looking for because it seemed that he had done the same thing to her that she had done to him. Coughing and spluttering, she put down the cup of coffee and quickly ran to the sink, trying to cough out all of the coffee that she had inhaled. He couldnt help but smile and laugh at this as improper as it was, Marina just looking back at him with a haunted stare. Wh.. What did you just say? she asked, spitting out the rest of the coffee and cleaning herself up with a hand towel that was on the oven. Willis looked off to the side and simply repeated, I was thinking about my parents. Damn And here I thought I would never have to have this conversation, Marina thought as she moved to the table and sat down, still fixing Willis with her normal stare. Alright hun, whats the matter? Youve made a conscious effort to never talk about them, so please, if something is the matter, do tell, she said, her normal maternal attitude kicking in to overdrive It made him feel guilty about bringing this all up, but he just didnt want to let it pass by. He had already forgotten the issue so many times that this time, he didnt want to just let it die like that again. It was important to him. At least he thought it was. I They went out on a journey to find legendary pokemon, right? he asked meekly, not exactly feeling comfortable all of the sudden. Marina just nodded and listened as he continued to explain, Well Maybe if I go out on my own journey and follow their footsteps maybe I could find them. Marina just nodded again, obviously not wanting to contribute until he was done. And well, I guess Im kind of tired of just waiting here, thats all. Im a huge burden to you and Jayce and Im really not getting anything done here. I keep saying that when Im old enough Ill work with Professor Willow, but I really dont think Id like that. Ya, I like calculations and stuff, but I dunno. At this point, his voice was quivering, unable to really make his thoughts turn in to words. He didnt know where he was going this, and with Marina looking at him like that without saying anything was just too much. Ya know what? Just forget I said anything, okay? He was about to push his chair back and walk away when Marinas hand grabbed his arm, her eyes boring straight in to him. Sit. Her order was absolute and he was back in the chair in a heartbeat as she stood up and walked over to the sink, obviously thinking very hard on something. Let me ask you something. What is the reason you want to do this? To find your parents? To relieve Jayce and I of you? To run away? To leave this all behind? she asked, her back still facing Willis as she thought carefully, every word picked individually for the best effect. Willis just looked down at the floor for a few minutes, truthfully unable to answer those questions. I dont know. I just want to get away from here At least for a while And that seemed like the best way to do it. Go on a journey Marine sighed and then looked up at the ceiling, her fingernails rapping against the metal of the sink. Listen, dont think you arent wanted here. I love you very much and Jayce cares for you very much, that will never change. So dont leave just because you think you are a burden. You try and run away and I will catch you, mark my words. And dont go because you think it will make your parents proud. They wanted you to live how you wanted to live. Only go if you really want to. And dont go until you have a real end point in mind, a reason behind it. It doesnt matter if you never achieve it, I just dont want you wandering aimlessly without a purpose. That defeats the point of a journey. So think about it. And when youve decided, tell me, okay? Youre my son for all matters, and that will never change. I dont want you to just leave without telling me. Itd make me feel like an awful parent, ya know? she said, looking back at Willis. And for the first time in his life, he saw her with tears in her eyes. She smiled and said, Ill always be here for you, regardless of your decision, just know that, okay? Youre family. Willis couldnt help but start to tear up himself. Barely able to control himself, he nodded and then got up, walking out the door, Marina watching him with her arms folded across her chest. She didnt know if she had ever been so proud of Willis before. He had made progress on his own. He had decided to stop waiting for his parents to come back, the thing she had been hoping that he did for so long. It didnt matter what he did in life to her, as long as he did it for himself and was able to move forward on his own, the reason why she hated it when Jayce tried to pressure him. Now that he was at that point, it was his turn to decide what happened to him. And she would let him make any decision, even if she really did want him to stay. It was his choice. |

The meadow, a lovely place that Willis always loved. You could just sit down and stare up at the sky and let the clouds go over head. Soon you would loose track of time and the world all around you would seem to stop. The next thing you knew, it would be dinner time and you would have been lying there for hours without even realizing it and not even cared. It was the perfect place to clear ones mind and just think, no matter what the subject. So what do I want to do? Will I do a journey? And if so why? With a sigh he closed his eyes. The low hum of the wind mixed with the shuffling of the grass around him, it was all the perfect relaxant. It was all he needed, and he had all the time in the world to think on it. He thought about all of the things he liked. Legendary pokemon, caring for pokemon, and even the idea of battling in a lessened sense. He liked the idea of going around the world and doing field research everywhere. He liked the idea of seeing the world through the eyes of so many who had gone on such journeys. But it was all too broad. He needed a goal. What was the one thing he wanted more than anything else? ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ Oh, youre back. Made a decision? Yes. And that is? Im going. I am going to find it. Find what? Manaphy. The Prince of the Sea. Thats my journey. I want to find it, and if I do great things along the way or find my parents, it will just be a result of the journey. Are you going to try and talk me out of it? Of course not. Catch. Marina smiled as she tossed him a large backpack, light blue in color and decorated with the same symbols that he had found in his book, the ones said to decorate Manaphy. He looked at it carefully before looking up at her. She just smiled and said, I knew what your choice would be. And I knew youd leave one day. Had that prepared from day one really. The clothes inside might be a bit bigger than you are, but I didnt expect it quite this soon. Regardless, Im proud of you. Willis looked at her as he opened the bag, finding some light blue clothing within, similar to the kind that his mother had used to wear, only more masculine, and asked, Why? Because its only right for you to go. Its in your blood. And Im just glad Glad that you chose it on your own. Now get going. The stuff in that backpack should be all you need to get started. Multiple changes of clothes, some money and enough food to settle even you for a week before you need to restock. Oh, and here. With one final movement, she placed a digital device in his hands. A Poketech? was all he could ask before she laughed and nodded. Im not working today, so just talk to Willow. Now, once you get your starter Pokemon, be sure to stay in town at least for a few days to say goodbye. Too many kids just run off without saying goodbye to anyone but their family. And when you come back, always know you have a home here, okay? And dont forget to call me; I programmed my number in to that, so you have no excuse! And most of all, dont forget to enjoy yourself. The smile on her face was priceless and all Willis could do was smile back at her and then turn around and wave goodbye. Marina waved back as he walked through the door before sitting down at the table, sighing deeply. So, he finally left? The sound caused her to jump as she looked behind her, her younger brother standing against the door frame, his arms crossed, almost like he had always been there. Once she caught her breath she nodded and then sighed, just leaning back on her chair. You knew he would sooner or later. Dont worry, hell do fine, he said casually before smiling at his sister, who looked a lot older than she really was at this point. All she could do was nod and say, I know. I'll just miss him. But it's better this way. No other way to get rid of inner demons than this. Anyway, keep an eye on him for a while, okay?" Jayce just nodded before walking out the door himself. |
