It's time to take off the little boy gloves!
This is the EXP system that York (GrandOldDuke) created. Take a look at it and get familiar with it. The requirement for a pokemon to level up is 1.5 points. Look at someone's profile and ask someone if you don't understand.

Simple Experience

1 vs 1

When one Pokemon defeats another Pokemon, the experience gained by the winner is determined by comparing the level of the defeated to the winner.

Example 1. A Lv. 5 Bulbasaur defeats a Lv. 5 Charmander

5 (Level of defeated Pokemon)/5 (Level of victorious Pokemon) = 1.0 exp

Example 2. A Lv. 5 Bulbasaur defeats a Lv. 8 Charmander
8/5 = 1.6 exp

Example 3. A Lv. 5 Bulbasaur defeats a Lv. 3 Charmander
3/5 = 0.6 exp

Complex Experience

X vs 1

When two or more Pokemon collaborate to defeat a single Pokemon (ie they attack in sequence, with the first Pokemon switching out before fainting, or they attack simultaneously), then the experience they each receive is calculated by the level of the slain compared to the average of the levels of the victors, divided evenly amongst the victors. This function can be expressed as this formula:

(DL/((1L+2L+...NL)/N))/N

Where DL is the defeated Pokemon's Level,
1L, 2L, and NL are the respective levels of all the Pokemon that (actively) participated in the defeat
and N is the total number of those Pokemon.

Example 1. A Level 5 Bulbasaur and a Level 4 Squirtle defeat a Level 5 Charmander

(5/((5+4)/2))/2
(5/(9/2))/2
(5/4.5)/2
1.1/2
= 0.55 = 0.6 exp (each)

Example 2. A Level 5 Bulbasaur and a Level 9 Squirtle defeat a Level 5 Charmander

(5/((5+9)/2))/2
(5/(14/2))/2
(5/7)/2
0.7/2
= 0.35 = 0.4 exp (each)

Example 3. A Level 5 Bulbasaur, a Level 4 Squirtle, and a Level 9 Charmander defeat a Level. 20 Caterpie

(20/((5+4+9)/3))/3
(20/(18/3))/3
(20/6)/3
3.3/3
= 1.1 exp each

GenEXP

For every post you make, you will be awarded a small amount of experience. The person who posts after you gets to award you experience. If you're posting after someone and need to award them experience, check this fun guide.

-If the person above you posted a mod on the topic you're posting in:
Award them between 0.1 and 0.5 experience. 0.1 is for a substandard mod... as in you're thinking "Well, not much, at least they modded me I guess..", 0.2 is for a standard mod, and 0.3 is for a particularly exceptional or complicated mod, 0.5 is for really really really really awesomeness.
If the mod knocked out two of your best pokemon but did it in a (really really really really) spectacularly dazzling way that left your jaw hanging open, it's then you can actually give them up to 0.5; if the mod made the Zapdos uncharacteristically stop fighting and randomly choose to join your team (well, you should report that, but for example's sake) that'd be a 0.1.

-If the person above you did not post a moderation of the topic:
This is normally the one that mods look at more since they award genexp to the person they're modding. Use your best judgement on standards and award them either 0.1 or 0.3 exp for every post that they make.

So here's the important difference to note:
>Moderations can receive up to 0.5, but the normal range is up to 0.3; 0.5 is only for exceptional circumstances.
>Normal posts, so called adventure posts, can get up to 0.3.

See, so in this way, mods get "paid" for modding in terms of experience and EVERYONE who posts roleplay gets a little reward.

Genexp is only rewarded for ROLEPLAY topics. A post in a store that says "Buying: 1 Potion 2 Pokeballs 780 zeni" is not roleplaying. But a post in the same store that IS roleplayed will get genexp- so yes you CAN get it just about anywhere.

GenEXP accumulates constantly, but can only actually be applied to Pokemon while visiting a town landmark. There is not limit to how much GenEXP can be spent at any time, excepting only that when Pokemon reach level 60, GenEXP can no longer be applied to them.

------------------------

Partial Experience

No one has ever beat this game.

Yep, that's right. Never. No one's even got more than five badges (not that this matters anymore, you'll see later). That's just the nature of the beast. Training Pokemon, gathering fame... this takes time. A while back, we came up with GenEXP, and now, in our latest attempt to take that sentence up there down, we've added partial EXP.

Every once in awhile, you may pull off a particularly impressive move or strategy. On such occasions, your moderator may award the participating Pokemon anywhere from .1 - .5 EXP, applied immediately. That's right, the move from the anime where Pokemon could involve in the middle of a battle turning the tides is now possible.

You know what's annoying? When you spend a few posts beating down a Pokemon, and capture it, but all that battling does nothing for you Pokemon. That's done with. Anytime an altercation between two Pokemon ends without one being fainted (either through forfeit, capture, truces, or escapes), both Pokemon will receive the EXP they would normally receive from fainting the opponent, but multiplied by (enemies total HP - enemies remaining HP) / enemies total HP.
NOTE: If one Pokemon deals no damage, they, of course, get no EXP.

A Clarification:

There are three types of EXP, which are all pretty much the same, but with subtle differences. Problems have arose, so here it is, definitively.

EXP: The broad term for all experience types, but most specifically the EXP earned in battle. When you defeat a Pokemon or get partial EXP, this is it.

GENEXP: Genexp is rewarded for making posts, and can only be distributed in towns. It cannot be used on Pokemon over Lv. 60.

FREEFORM EXP: Covered more in-depth in the other thread. Freeform EXP is rewarded for Freeforms, and can be distributed to anything anywhere.

EVs!
(Effort Values)

First off, let me say that these are completely optional to use. If you would rather keep going how you are now, without having to keep track of an extra few stat points and also not getting the advantages they bring you, that's fine. You can not read this post.

However, if you do, then let me first explain EVs. They ARE in the pokemon games; they're hidden stats that are coded into it but never shown. An EV will help a pokemon get stronger in a certain area of its stats: Speed, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, or HP.

A Luvdisc has a very high base Speed stat. The base stat it has for Speed is, in fact, higher than any of its other base stats. However, a Shuckle has very little Speed; it's highest base stat is Defense.

Let's say a Level 11 Shuckle goes up against a Level 11 Luvdisc, and wins. Shuckle gains one experience point, yes; but he also gains one EV. Your pokemon gains an EV after it causes any pokemon to faint. But the type of EV depends on the highest base stat of the victim.

In this case, Shuckle would gain one Speed EV along with his experience, because Luvdisc is a speedy little devil. If Luvdisc had beaten Shuckle, on the other hand, Luvdisc would've gotten one experience point and one Defense EV, because Shuckle's pretty thick.

Now, by itself, that one EV doesn't do anything. But let's say that Mr. Awesome-Shuckle goes on and beats up three more Luvdisc (who happen to be at lower levels). That means he has 4, count 'em, 4 Speed EVs now, and he's still at Level 11.

So let's say he faints something else. It doesn't matter what; he gets another EV of some type which doesn't matter for this example. He has FOUR EVs of the same stat type, speed, and he's leveling up.

Now that he's level twelve, you can get rid of the four Speed EVs and add one point to Shuckle's speed stat! If Shuckle would've had, say, seven Speed EVs, you would still only remove four to get one more point to the Speed Stat; Shuckle would then have three Speed EVs left over, because 7-4=3. Get it? Good.

Now let's say Shuckle goes on and beats a Mewtwo.

...what?

Anyway, he beats the Mewtwo and gets an experience point. But then the EVs come into play. And Mewtwo doesn't give one EV... it gives THREE! Shuckle suddenly has three Special Attack EVs. That's awesome! He only needs one more to get four!

But how do you know what kind of EVs, and how many, a pokemon gives out after they've been defeated? For instance, Charmeleon gives out two EVs; one Special Attack and one Speed. Well, it's at Serebii. Or Psypoke, whichever you use. Serebii especially has EV lists for every stat, and both dexes have the EVs a pokemon gives out in it's profile. You can check yourself. They've always been there. Really.

I believe that does it for assigning EVs to pokemon. Now, because this is optional, mods will NOT be required to give these to players. If a player wants to earn EVs from a battle, he or she will have to go to a pokedex and find them out for theirselves. *gets passed a twenty dollar bill by mods* Oh, thank you.

Remember, EVs ONLY take effect when you level up. Just because your precious little Totodile has eight Attack EVs DOESN'T mean it gets two more attack points. It has to level up before they mean a thing. You should keep track of EVs in your profile by each pokemon; We hope to eventually get emoticons that say "SpAtk EV", "Def EV", etc. but until then you can make a little table like this next to each pokemon:

Shuckle
HP ***
SpAtk *
SpDef
Atk *****
Def **

That way you'll know that it has three HP EVs, one SpAtk Ev, no SpDef Evs... etc.

Yes, HP EVs. Curious as to how they work? Well, if that level twelve Shuckle has four of them when he levels up...

Instead of being "Shuckle Lvl 13 26/26" he would be "Shuckle Lvl 13 27/27". The Max HP a pokemon has goes up one point per four HP EVs they have when they level up. Great for tanks, no?

Now, onto how this shows up in your posts.

If this random Shuckle was yours, and you posted its stats in battle, it would look something like this:
Shuckle lvl 13 27/27
(+1 Def EV, +2 Spd EV)

It would be just like it used a move that increased those stats that amount... except it doesn't take any amount of turns, and it's a permanent effect that cannot be removed. (Granted, if someone Leers that Shuckle, the -1 Defense that would come from that would cancel the EV out. But after that battle, the Leer effect wears off, while the EV does not.)
EDIT: Okay so if you know anything about how stat boosts and EVs work in the games you may be aware that they are completely different and don't work like how the above crossed out paragraph says it does. We know this, and have also reconsidered our position on how it should work here on Legacy. They're... uhm... not quite as helpful as a regular stat boost unless you have a lot... yeah.

I think that covers it; but remember it's OPTIONAL. If you don't want to take the trouble, you don't have to. Or if you only care about raising your pokemon's Defense stat and not the others, you can choose to only keep track of the Def EVs. Or you can choose to only keep track of EVs on some pokemon. It's your gain if you do, and your loss if you don't, but it is more work.

And yes, you can count up the EVs you would've gotten from past battles and tally them up; and then you can add the stat points on the next time you level up. If you kept track of EVs before your posts were deleted, that works too.
