Kev, a few of my budgie girls have that overgrown cere like Sky. Does it ever fall off? It seems that their nostrils could get covered up?? |

yes its odd isn't it, its small at the moment it does get a lot bigger and curls up, in fact it will be like that again in a couple of weeks. I did think that it might be some sort of growth but it is her cere (I have the bite marks to prove it). No it doesn't come off but does gets bigger or smaller depending, I take it if she's in breeding mood, I also think it may well be related to her not breeding or not wanting too. The only reason I say this is that it never turns that dark rich brown, it goes a darkish grey instead. I have never looked into what the reason could be why the cere is like that, she also has a deformity in her toes, in the two toes that go back the ones on the inside are the smallest on all budgies. On Sky they are tiny little things probably the length of the first joint on a normal budgie, so if you think about it she only has the grip at the back by one toe on each foot, as the little toe is always on top of the perch she is standing on. |

A bit of an update I was a bit surprised when I heard some funny noise coming from their cage over the weekend but Sky and Frank were mating bana Talk about sex in public though budge was on the same perch next to them and babe was on the swing behind them. Anyway they been doing it quite a bit she has also thrown all the toys out of the box and now she is sat in there, So tonight I think I will remove budge and Babe as their is a bit of bickering going on and leave Frank and Sky by themselves to see if anything happens. |

What beautiful babies Sky and Frank will have!! I know what you mean, Kev, about budgies out in public. Sometimes others in the cage will purposely go right next to the mating pair just to watch! :o It's a form of entertainment for them, I think!! |

Well there were two very unhappy budgies last night. I moved Budge and Babe to another cage and they were not happy at all, first thing budge did was to get himself stuck in the feed pot, upside down as well. they also took a long time to settle as everyone wants the same swing, and there were lots of muttering until I went to bed. I do feel quite mean and realised that this is the first time that they have all been separated in their lives, Sky, Babe and Frank were all bought within three weeks of one another, and have lived together ever since. :( They were bought early 2005, and Budge came to me in the middle of 2006. There was mating again this morning, and budgies being budgies it means you can get close to see if they are doing it right and afraid to say they were not. Frank is a large bird compared to the others and if he stands on sky he flattens her so he's stood on one leg trying to get his tail under and around hers. And they are not quite touching at the moment but this is the first real time that there has been any serious mating, so maybe time will tell if they get it correct. I would think that it would be easier for them without another budgie sat next to sky preening her head. |

Are their cages side by side so they can still see each other? |

Yes they can still see one another, i'd hate to think of the noise if they couldn't see one another. Budge will probably settle down the quickest as he now has sole preening rights to Babe :) |
