We had a first this weekend, we got our claws trimmed for the first time! They were starting to become more like talons so I had to get them done for self-preservation. I took Jade the same place I've always gone but I guess there's been some turnover there -- none of the people I knew, and they were all younger than me! And clearly not really bird people. Anyway, she got a nail nipped to bleeding on one toe, they put the powder on it but didn't get it into the wound so it came off as soon as her foot got wet (from putting it in her drinking water). Then she bled all over the place, and it was sore so she was angry all afternoon too. (J says next time we should just do it ourselves, we can do at least as well.) I was pretty irritated at them, I didn't like them hurting my baby  ! She's ok now though and has forgiven me after much neck-rubbing and treat-feeding. nod Also, is it possible for birds to get water on their ears? It must be feeling better, cuz she's stopped, but Sunday (after a shower) she was yawning and wiggling her tongue and rubbing her ears all day -- just like a person does when they have water or something irritating their canals. Anyone else seen something like this? |

i'm not sure about the water thing. My avian vet tends to clip pretty short too, i think simply so i'm not having to bring them in every other month for a reclip like if i do it myself. They do tend to be a bit sore for a few hours but get over it ok. Poor things! |

The groomer who comes to clip my birds wings and do nails seems to clip pretty short too. Amos bled a little from the toe but not for very long. As far as the water in the ear sure it's possible. |

We clip all our guys ourselves. We only clip the very tip of the nail, so we have to do it more often but we never get any blood or anything. We're used to it now but it was scary the first couple of times. We just use a human nail clipper & really take our time. You have to ignore their struggles & yelling, we usually "ice cream cone" them & they settle down after a short time. The main thing is not to rush or panic. We'll try to get some pics to post. You CAN do it as long as you're very careful & as I say, take your time & make sure you only get the very tip before you clip.    |

Birds ears, like ours, can get water in them. Deep diving birds have very thick feather coverings over their ears to protect them from the intense pressure. If a bird gets water in it's ear it will come out eventually but it may take a while. No long term harm should come from this, just a little "deafness" as humans would experience. :D |

My groomer cuts them on the short side too... She also uses an emery board on them and then buffs them to make them nice and smooth... I've never had a problem with them bleeding... |

They really should not bleed when they have their nails clipped, they must be clipping way too short, it will be more difficult to trim when they have dark nails. buy some concrete perches solves the problem. Andys right about the ears, if you are able to give your parrot scritches move some feathers on the side of their head and have a look at the ear they will more then likely yawn if you rub this part of the head. On the lutinos i can actually see a dark shadow behind their feathers which is their ear |

I've only ever seen the conures ears
:) I've never had to clip the p'lets yet (they seem to wear them down naturally) but the conures have dark nails (green cheeks) so they always bleed when the vet does it. |

I don't think it was on purpose, cuz they only went short on one toe. The only reason I didn't do it myself is it takes 2 people, and J isn't as comfortable handling her (Crazy man thinks it's bad when she bites him!). But he says he will hold her for me so we can control it better next time -- we were both amazed at how much blood can come out of such a tiny toenail! We both have plenty of experience, so if he's on board we can definitely do it ourselves. I moved her concrete perch over next to her tent too, so she'll use it every day now. |

If you don't mind clipping them more often, you really only need to take the very tip off. After that they will usually keep themselves trim if you have "sand perches" or some such. & you're right Lness, it IS a 2 man job         |
