I thought this might be helpful to people considering clipping their parrotlet's wings. This diagram also shows the baby clip sometimes used in bigger or heavier birds. Kev, I know you have a similar wing illustration but I think this is a little different. Posted Image and basic instructions.... Posted Image |

Just for anyone that finds one wing easy to clip and the other one very awkward to do, just turn the bird around. If your not sure what i mean, bird held in left hand for right wing Posted Image turn the bird around so the bird is facing towards you and clip the other one. Posted Image |

Thanks, Kev. I remember the first time I clipped Boo or Pesto by myself, for a minute I couldn't figure out how to clip the second wing! Gail, it's easy, like cutting hair!! Too bad I don't live closer, I could help you! :) |

Are you saying that Lovebirds, being from Africa, should only have a baby clip? Lisa |

No I think you will find that relates to the larger African parrots, I'm guessing that a baby clip on a lovebird would make no difference to his flying at all. So IF you feel you need to clip your lovebird clip him as per the diagram. |

Yeah, that thing about the Africans refers especially to Poicephalus which are chunky-bodies but have stubby little wings. You aren't supposed to clip them too hard because they'll lose even the ability to glide and just crash like a rock. We had lovebirds when I was a kid and we had to clip them pretty well to keep them in the room - they can really go when they want to! |

Just to update this thread, when clipping the wings the best idea is just to take a small amount off Each wing to start with and then gradually take more off as you feel the need, the bird MUST always be able to glide to the floor . Never ever only trim one wing this will lead to the bird not having any control and spiralling and then crashing to the floor, this can end in serious injuries to the bird, broken hips, pelvis, knee and leg breaks or even death |

It depends really the last time I clipped Squeak was I think around June time he has just got all his feathers back now so around four months, although it had no effect on Squeak and did not stop him from getting where he wanted. |
