John, I would get the widest cage possible. Matz is right, about 30" wide would be the minimum. Can you get them a big flight cage? Maybe something even wider than 30"?

Neil, a lot of birds in the US (including ours) have their wings trimmed so they don't get flying time, but they do get time out of the cage to climb and play :) I don't think it's necessary for John to re-home his....he just needs a bigger cage :)

Yes I agree with Laura I have my pair in a flight cage but as Laura said I clip my birds wings too. They get out of cage time every day but they stay on the cage I usually put there dinner on top of the cage for them, I can't allow mine to fly either because if they landed on my Amazons cage she would kill them :( or at least bite off a foot,

Neil...what Laura said. A lot of people on this forum have multiple birds and other animals that could pose a threat to such a small bird. I honestly think the rehoming comment was not fair... :(

If the cage is big enough and there's plenty of toys to stimulate them, then I disagree...that don't need "that much" out of cage time. This is the problem with Parrotlets. People tend to let them out way too much and they get into all kinds of trouble and even trouble that causes their death. Sadly it's been documented on this site more than once. :(

This is oh so true because even though Parrotlets are small they are very inquisitive and bold.... they have no idea they only weigh 28 to 34 grams. I have seen Adam come down to the side of his cage to growl at my dog Bobby drats Luckily Bobby is very non aggressive or else Adam would no longer be here. Flying is great for all birds but accidents do happen when they get flying too fast and hit a window.

Matz, what are the dimensions of that cage? I'll be getting a new one for Bonnie & Clyde very soon (thankfully). The one they are in now will do for a pair of smaller birds :)
LOL! You mean there are smaller birds?!! rofl

But seriously, think "finch" when looking for a good Parrotlet cage, they need as much room to flit around as you can find and afford. Though Max is free flight, we almost lost him once due to his nosiness and my daughters big feet. I think if you make one room bird safe for out of cage time and always slowly open the room door-they like to explore floors too, that's great. Even a bathroom (toilet seat down boys :twag: ) is wonderful for taming and training away from the cage. But they do have each other, so bonding may not be important to you?

Yes Finches are smaller  But in all seriousness my pair are bonded and want nothing to do with interacting with me, They have a large cage with lots of toys and are allowed out ....Adam sometimes won't even come out and Eve is content to just sit on top of the cage. Even if they never came out they are quite happy enjoying each others company, fhey are now considered as a breeding pair,

It was probably a bit harsh to suggest rehoming them.
I just can't stand thinking of these guys locked in their cage their entire life. :(

Apologies if I caused offense John. I hope not as I didn't intend to. hide

've had a look on fleabay however, and intend to get a much larger cage in the very near future. Thanks for bumping this thread to the top Kevin, for one thing it's shown me what they should (and will) have, not what they do have...
. We know you will John and yes Gail everyone does things a bit differently my concerns are more that they have a good diet clean fresh water and a clean cage. Oh and lots of love helps too :) :) my pair could care less about me but I love them. I still talk to them every day even if Adam has his beak open daring me to try to touch him rofl rofl rofl

I know you were thinking about the welfare of the birds at heart Neil, as do I, so no apologies needed :) I would like to let them out of the cage to fly around whenever they wanted, but as I've already said, the only room they could safely do that in is the bathroom (yes, the toilet seat will be closed  ).

I've given up on fleabay for buying a cage, they all seem to be shorter in width than the cage they are in now (allbeit taller). Thankfully I've seen a good sized cage in a local petshop that I think will suit them perfectly - it's not a bird cage however, it's listed as a rat cage but it's very spacious and the bars are about 1cm apart. I've still got to look in a couple of other pet shops but I cannot see them having anything better than this one. After they've settled in I might even put the wide-bore plastic tubing back in, rats like to explore so maybe Bonnie and Clyde will like them too.

The cage that B&C are in now will be put to good use when I buy a pair of.... erm.... birds. I don't know exactly what yet but I will find out when I buy them  Cutthroats maybe, or green singers....

I've kept both types before, but forgot just how 'tuneful' the singers can be. To be honest I don't mind the noise they make, but as soon as one starts piping up all the rest of the birds join in - it's like having your very own dawn chorus all damn day

I had a different variety of cutthroat though, mine were an overall green with the red slash....
