now everyone's different on the amount of time they can spend with their birds, myself i come home from work and at about 5ish i let the birds out. the budgies come out every night and one pair of parrotlets come out with them. quite often the budgies dont want to come out they just stay in their cage whittering to one another, so i will end up with just one pair of parrotlets out. they will stay out normally for around an hour, hour and a half, and they they come down from the toys and stay on top of the budgies cage, to me this means they want to come in.they do come out at the weekends which can be up to 8 hours. the only thing i would say is not to spend more time in the first few weeks, than you can honestly spend with them for the rest of their lives. they can play quite happily by themselves for hours on end. kev :) |

With working full time and housework and yard work I find it difficult to spend a lot of time with mine. Weekends they are out most of the time. Week days they are out a couple hours each night. |

What Kevin said is really true. When you first get your bird don't give them anymore time than your going to always be able to spend with them. I'm lucky that I'm home all day and my birds are out for most of the day. With summer they go outside in their portable cages for a few hours but even when they come back in they get out of cage time for quite awhile. |

My mum and sister leave the cage door open for their budgie and cockatiel (respectively), even when they are not at home. The budgie plays happily on the floor with his toys and the cockatiel just climbs about outside her cage as her wings are clipped. I just wondred if anyone knew if it is safe to let a lovely parrotlet come and go as he or she pleases? |

Ive never done this before, I think I would be too afraid they may get hold of an electrical wire or into something that could hurt them. |

Yes, I was thinking about that. I'm just concerned that I'm at work weekdays and don't want him or her to feel bored or restricted. |

I wouldn't leave any bird to do as they please all day, you never know what could happen . I have had mine fall down behind the cooker ,the radiators, imagine if one felll down behind the radiator in the morning when you were out and was there all day with the heating on. Its not a sensible thing to do... kev |

No way! Too many things could happen
:o They are naturally curious, energetic and fearless...I don't even want to think about all the stuff they could get into! I don't even let Cricket out if I'm not in the same room with him! |

No as a matter of fact I was just down changing water dishes so I let Amos go in the other room on the floor until I was done. I keep a water jug with aged water in it for the Betta to change his water. When I got done I seen a spot of water on the floor.....................sure enough Amos punctured a hole in it and water was dripping out  |

Thank you all for your replies. I think it's agreed that he or she (if I ever find a breeder in the London area!) will be caged until I'm home in the evenings. :) |

Very wise decision ;) Birds are just too curious to leave unattended for long periods. |
