Cage bottom

Hi everyone - found some really useful tips already! :D

One question (at the moment) the bottom of Inca and Cusco's cage has a grill (same as the cage itself) over the main base. Should I leave this in or take it out. They never seem to go down the floor of the cage and we wondered if the grill was putting them off. We'd like to put some fresh fruit in a pot on the bottom but if they aren't going down there's no point.

Also, do they need sandpaper on the base? Gut reaction is no, but it came with the cage so we're using it for now. Thanks!!!! blue2

I leave the grills in the bottom of my cages, I used to take them out but I had a few birds who loved to go down and tear up the news papers so put all of them back in. No do not use sand paper. They have many nice cement type perches to help keep the birds nails from getting too long. I usually have two in every cage right by my feed dishes so I know they have to use them a little bit.

I leave the grates in mine too. They love to shred! And sandpaper I don't recommend either. I found a perch made out of a substance that looks like a clay pot. It does a good job keeping the nails dull...

I always take out the grills, for the same reason Bonnie said she leaves them in! They always liked to rip the paper, and I figured that was pretty cheap & harmless entertainment.
Plus, less food wasted cause they can go down and pick it up when they drop it!
I read somewhere that tiny feet can get hurt between the bars, they were actually talking about rodent cages, but I've taken them out of all the cages for everybody ever since.
I don't use sandpaper though, more expensive than newspaper and nobody has ever spent enough time on the floor where I thought it would do them any good. I do have one of those concrete perches for talon-filing though.

The grate stays in for Zuben. For the same reason Gail said, lol. I wouldn't want Zuben to eat his food that fell right beside or even ON his poop, eeeewww, lol. He wants more food or whatnot he knows to ask for it, (which he does loudly, lol)

I just worry if they go to the bottom where all the poop is at it may not be too healthy for them.

I also leave mine in for the same reasons really they have enough food in their pots there is no need to eat it of the floor. plus if i did take the grates out there would be a large gap for them to escape.
plus with the grate in, if their fruit falls down the chances are that it wont land in the poop

in the cage ive just given you measurements for in your other thread, there is no grate in that one, and they have never shown any interest in going on the bottom of the cage.

Cricket has no interest in the bottom of his cage either. The lowest to the bottom he will go is is seed and water dish..I've never seen him play on the bottom..

Zuben goes to the bottom of his cage a lot. Destructiveness.....well his log toy that I have for him he has already tore ALL of the bark off so we are gonna have to get him something to shred so he can destroy that, LOL

i love for mine to destroy their toys, its great to think something ive made they have liked it so much that its in bits at the bottom of the cage
you quite often used to here the following from older people that kept parrots "i used to buy him toys but all he did was chew them up" so they never gave their poor birds anymore toys.
