Well cage number nine arrived today 12hrs after I receive an answer to my email sent to Savic (manufacturers) 3 months ago saying the critter cage is not suitable for parrotlets (talk about 'shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted) and sent me bird cage options  if the bird cages available in the UK were 'suitable' to me I'd have one instead of loads standing empty,
Trouble is the design has not moved on from the times people just fed seeds and cleaning was minimal, they don't seem to understand that I need full front opening to get to all the nooks and crannies, Anyway this Savic Royal weighs a ton and will be my heaviest 'white elephant' if I've got it wrong,
On a 'lighter' note  cages ten and eleven are soon to be commissioned, Steve at Rosemead Avairies has said he will build me two aluminum holiday homes for the boys for when we go camping, I gave him the sizes with specification of grid gauge thick enough to keep out foxes and wild dogs (I'm a forest and woodland canvas camper), they have to pack flat to go on a car roof and be built easily when I reach my destination, as a bonus and justification in spending yet more money on the boys, they will come in handy when the boys and I have to house/animal sit for my family for ten days at a time,

How ironic is that, for them to reply just 12 hours before your cage arrived. Gather you had given up expecting a response. Still had they sent it a week ago it may have changed your mind. Just googled the Royal Savic and it looks brilliant, like you say such a bonus to have the fully opening doors. The birds will love being in there with the doors open. Security with freedom :)

Are you intending to keep them in separate cages one on top of t'other? Or set up so they can have one each but share if they fancy? Or as one large cage? I suppose you have all those options. It does look very large!!! I am not a fan of rats (massive understatement) but looked at the customer photos on zooplus. You will have to add one with the Parrotlet boys in residence 😀

Your holiday cages sound good. It is so frustrating when you look for cages. There are hundreds and hundreds of styles but all based around the same idea or huge great things which fit the bill but too big or the spacing between bars is too wide. I use a hamster cage as a holiday cage which is much better than the small bird cages but a little weak in construction- definitely not suitable for wild camping. Will be interested to see photos of those :) Have you got a bird cage mortgage?? Paul thinks I buy too many cages......but so often they look ideal but are rubbish to clean. Mine are back in vision cages now which are great for reducing mess outside the cage and do clean up well but they are a bit of a phaff to give a thorough clean. They seem happy in them but though the door idea is excellent as you can open them inwards to become an inside ledge while doors are open they could do with being larger.

Get your photo head on Berni cos we would like to see photos once the birds have moved in :) :) blue2 nod2

More bird cages!

When is some-one going to design the right
type for a Parrotlet? Mine are back to
vision cages... Sky likes the small one,
while Scooby is in the medium sized one...
I don't think I've ever had the right cage to
suit me and the birds! drats

Yep so far over £2000 spent on cages. Can't moan though as the Holiday home aluminum cages are costing £160 each and the King's cage equivalent is £350 each. I do love Rosemead Avairy's I swear if I wanted an aluminum spaceship they would make it

I intend the Savic Royal to be set up as one cage but will keep all the spare parts to divide into two should they ever want/need that option but with all the extra space I doubt they would need the divider. In America I would have no problem with cages, they have awesome ones out there. Yes a lot of design and business acumen has gone into Vision cages but I am a bird toy fanatic and they aren't big enough for all the lads paraphernalia plus flying room.

The main problem with me is that I personally hate cages unless they are the size of the domes at Eden Project. So I will never be a 100% satisfied. I know the lads are happy and smaller cages can provide a greater feeling of security but I can never get over this feeling that im incarcerating them.

Yes I agree, the one huge disadvantage of having a cage bird is having to cage it! Though I really do think they are more than happy if they have some time out of cage, to enjoy their little homes. If I give mine a quick time out of cage and try to catch them, they do everything to avoid being put back,.......but if they are left out a fair while they usually return to their cages from choice.

Rosemead aviaries ought to come up with a parrotlet cage. I must admit I wouldn't want a huge one but would like the idea of a single or double cage which was suitable.

The vision cages are really excellent at reducing the overspill. I used to get a fair amount of debris below their cages and now with the vision there is really very little unless they are moulting.

Not the prettiest of cages but they do work pretty well. my pairs have the medium ones

That's the only fault with Rosemead cages they are not nice looking but I am willing to put up with that as the function of them in regards to cleaning, safety, space, weight and mobility are fantastic. I'm not worried about the mess around the cage as that is easy to clean. I go potty if soft foods get trapped and I can't get at it without taking everything apart. This never happens when the whole front of the cage opens and aluminum is a dream to clean. 2.gif
